I'm sorry if anyone mis-understood me. I did not mean to make my post seem thrashing, I just tend to go on long tangents. You are all right when you say that as long as people understand, then it is fine. I am just trying to point out that good (not 100%) grammar and spelling helps a lot when communicating. And I didn't mean it for people to learn English in order to make themselves understood. All I ask, is that you take your time and be appreciative of others reading your post. Some members seem to not take the time and due care to make sure they make sense.

I don't know why, but whenever I have tried ../ it has never worked, especially when calling images from CSS.Thanks about the / = root. It is more than likely that, and you have probably saved me a whole deal of trouble.

So with what you are saying without grammar or punctuation this sentence makes sense although I have directed it in a questionable way as without the punctuation in place you end up getting a headache and reduces your chances of understanding what I am putting. A good site to see English at its worst is teenspot.com forum boards. Although the main site is respectable the forums have little to say about themselves because people are getting lazy no other explanation but lazy and why is this because time is restricted and the examiners in England are allowing American spellings and grammatical sentencing for GCSE work. The teachers complain but nothing is done about it. As you can see, the above paragraph is harder to make sense of and gave me a headache, just by deprecating my punctuation. English is like an art. English is a written method of communication and allows us to put across what we mean, through the use of syntax. Language is something that allows us to communicate to each other, to express our thoughts and emotions. When it comes to written communication, we express our inflections and pauses with punctuation. Without punctuation, the words would be there, but on the other end you would think it was coming from a monosyllabic person, the sentences would have no emotion in them. If you struggle to grasp the importance of spelling and grammar, then turn your attention to this example. Say, for example, you are making a very important website in XHTML. Now, think of XHTML as a representitive of English. By nature, XHTML demands 99% accuracy, organisation and attention to detail. This is the same with English. If you don't make your coding syntactically correct, the browser engine will display your file with flaws, due to the lack of attention you put into making it, and a validator will tell you where you went wrong. Our brains tell us where we go wrong with English and because we read in almost the same way, if it is wrong to us, then 90% of the time, it will be wrong to others. I fully understand that there aren't native or fluent English speakers here, but you can do your best. Just remember, this is a professional forum, not a chat room.

Please do not take this topic as offensive, rather a pointer in the direction that will help you, the members of this forum and guests. Introduction: Xisto, as you may well know, is based on a more professional and formal tone than sister site Xisto. This professionalism should be shown through in-depth information, developed with highly accurate grammar and spelling. However, through looking at recent topics and posts from new contributors and existing ones, it would appear that this professionalism is being delimited, in ways that is having negative effects on the site as a whole. Grammar, the Founding Stone of Good Communication. In order to make sense of a language, you need rules. For programmers, and those with good general knowledge, these rules are known as syntax. If you put your words in the wrong order, or don’t apply the right connectives, then the whole meaning of your sentence can change unexpectedly, or ultimately mean nothing. In the likelihood it results in meaning nothing, your topic/post will be deleted, as something that means nothing is also known as useless, and therefore results in spam. Additionally to your words having to gell together to make an understandable sentence, you also need to use COMMAS. I have seen many members in many forums, not using commas. They don’t mean, take a breath, but their nature of splitting sentences into usable segments is what gives the ‘breath-take’ effect. If you are unsure on how to use commas, then use Google to find articles. There should be hundreds, especially on Exam Revision sites. The above is an example of someone that doesn’t use commas, or when they do, it is sparingly. Using commas helps people to understand better the context behind the words. Even if a sentence doesn’t make any sense really, the use of commas in the right places helps to get a slightly better hand on of what the author is conveying. So please, when making a topic/post. Firstly check if you have it capitalised and also you have used the appropriate punctuation where it is needed. Spelling Matters. Without good spelling practice, it eventually affects other aspects of your life. Especially if you are in Education, as it eventually spills onto your work. I for one noticed this problem, as I often write words like ‘they’ without the ‘y’ on the end. This, I believe is because of the use of deprecating my words when chatting to others, and not being bothered about it, as they ‘can figure it out’. Unfortunately, this liberty should not be extended to other areas online, like main documents within sites and also in discussion boards. It is appalling to see members typing in short-hand. Whilst it may be faster and more natural to write that way, one man’s l33t is another man’s mess. For me, to see things like “Hw r u?” anywhere near a discussion board is demeaning to the owners and the respectable members. You should take your time when making a new topic/post to make sure that your spelling is accurate, or else you will find that many members start getting annoyed. I understand that no-one is perfect, and obviously you can’t check your accuracy all of the time. But, if you take just a few seconds to proof-read your topic/post before sending it, then you will reduce confusion and annoyance.

Steps you should take when something like this happens: Make sure you have the appropriate number of credits to maintain your site activity Ensure that other people's sites are not suspended. You can do this simply by looking through the approved web hosting accounts, and using the urls given. In some cases however, it may prove that the owner has changed the domain name, like I have. Contact a moderator, like me, via PM, as we might have a solution, know the problem or are currently talking to the admin. I always reply to PM's so don't worry. Contact support[at]xisto[dot]com and you should be contact by m^e, OpaQue or Moonwitch within two working days. If it goes on longer, then make a topic, as other may be having the same problem. The above steps should apply to most or all account problems, like suspensions.

It gives you instant spyware and malware as well.My favourites are:ShareazaAresBoth are free of crap and have a lot of files, especially Shareaza, as it connects to E-mule and E-donkey 2000 servers as well. The download times on Shareaza are erratic, and you need to sometimes restore the xml file with the server information in order for it to connect.Ares, is slightly smaller, but still has a good user pool. The download times are great. It comes in two flavours: Lite and Normal. They recommend Lite for slower machines, or for those that don't want the built in media players and chat systems. I always use the normal version though.

The posts in this place are a little messy. As long as you direct the browser to look for the favicon, it can be anywhere. Personally, I put it in the images folder with the rest. <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/ico" href="/images/favicon.ico" /> The above is valid XHTML (hence the />) and also provides a fixed address for the icon, but still leaves it relative (/images/favicon.ico). The use of / means root. So, this means you don't need to put http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ just to get it to work. Notice from twitch: Thanks to Quatrux for info

Well, you can use the cursors defined in the browser, and if you have some desktop theme, then they will suit.I personally use the cursor: pointer; on a:hover, and cursro: help; on a:hover over abbreviations and long-winded words, so that people know.

You need to cheat the system, by using textarea. You can use the textare just like the form input, but it allows you more control. And by simply using CSS to change the heigh, width and font styles of your textarea, you can do anything with it. Just remember to include overflow: hidden; so that none of the scrollbars show and you should be fine. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN""http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Document</title><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"><style type="text/css">textarea { height: 18px; line-height: 18px; overflow: hidden; width: 400px;}</style></head><body><form name="form1" method="post" action=""> <textarea name="textarea" cols="1" rows="1"></textarea></form></body></html> Hope that helps

Quicksilver Forums Best forum software I have ever used
twitch replied to xboxrulz1405241485's topic in General Discussion
Lmao. Omg. That's a good one: It's not even a noticable time difference - 298 milliseconds. Quicksilver looks like a slightly stripped-down version of PHPBB. They make it sound as though PHPBB is rocket science. I am a dunce at PHP, I understand it, just can't do a great deal with it, yet I know how to modify it fairly well. 15% faster sounds a heck of a lot more than 298 milliseconds. Notice how he didn't include the features in his topic? Why is that? To compare Quicksilver with top-heavy boards like IPB/vB would be useless, as by their nature, they are richly packed with features. To compare that with a 'skinny' board, would be stupid, as their will be a noticable time difference. As you've probably guessed, I prefer PHPBB to SMF/Quicksilver and the rest, as it is the most supported, and easiest to understand board. The features it has can be upgraded quickly and with little effort (depending on what you are doing). Also, the layout of the CP mimics vB, which is helpful, as the controls are well structured. If however, I were to move to another board, from phpBB it would probably be to Quicksilver or MyBB. As both are like phpBB in the design. -
Welcome to the site peter.Your username is a little contravercial, but never mind, shouldn't cause any problems...Hope you enjoy it here, and I look forward to your future posts.

My Webdesign Using Photoshop Cs2 in CS2
twitch replied to ikenalleenik's topic in General Discussion
It's a start, and you will get better with practice. I think your best bets are to head over the http://ww.csszengarden.com/ and take a look at their resources. A site which is currently helping me out a lot in box model designs is http://www.thenoodleincident.com/ which show you the different model designs you can make rather simply. If you're wanting the simple look (KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid) then I suggest you head down a CSS design route. It helps significantly and has a growing audience. On the whole, you need to improve your use of images and when you use them. At the moment, it is useless the way you have them. And the red on black will only work if you use advanced effects, which lead away from simplicity. -
Habbo hotel is one of, if not the best, marketing scheme aimed at teenagers. It takes chat a step further, by making it a real-like environment in which they can interect with each other. The use of furni and such is to get the teens to pay (more often with text messages) for the company. There must be thousands, if not millions, of USD ($) going into habbo every week. And by expanding their online business beyond the confinements of one language, they are seizing the true potential of online business.

Firstly, the image can be used for anything, if applied properly.I personally hate splash pages, as they are useless and provide no really substantial purpose. And if you can do it better than, please make a tutorial about it. I like this sort of thing, and always wondered how it can be made with Photoshop and the likes, without the use of 3D software.

I'm just getting pissed off with the differences in display methods between FF and IE. I'm not even going to attempt at looking at my design though other browsers like Opera.IE will always be a distant shadow of Firefox, as MS continuously tries to out-do itself and it's enemies. They will fall I tell thee.

Well, I believe that your credits would freeze, whilst you have the adcodes on.IF they do not, then I suppose you would have to contact m^e or OpaQue.Please remember that the adcodes are only a TEMPORARY measure, and if it extends to more than temporary, you may find your account being deleted and/or shifted to Xisto.net (forced ads).

Project Antilost: Started Again
twitch replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Alerts, News & Announcements
We may yet be opening a links submission forum (until the main site is ready) which will allow you to submit (duh) useful links. -
I have unaproved this topic (if that is ok) from the Tutorials request section as it isn't a tutorial as such, and provides only limited information on the subject at hand. I've quickly researched this subject however, and appears to be quite an impressive system. PDF: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
