  1. I didn't see Windows 8 in the Windows versions offered when creating a virtual machine in Vmware workstation 8.Which one did you choose ? Windows 2008?
  2. The aim of this topic is precisely to show how to use Dynamic IP address with static names, like no-ip does.A small service runs on your PC, which communicates with the the server, and when people want to reach your fixed DNS name they reach your PC. When your IP changes, no problem, the client program tells the server that the address changed, and everything works fine again.
  3. Thanks for the info, Velma.Hope that this will not last too long, I've been trapped too.
  4. You can use gparted, it works fine. First use it in order to shrink the windows7 partition, then create the linux partitions or let the linux installer create the linux partions on the empty part of the disk.gparted boots off a CD, or it has it's own script for creation a bootable USB flashdrive.
  5. Did you have a look at this http://www.tech-faq.com/reset-bios-password.html or this http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
  6. Right click on "my computer", this open a window, choose system protect, this opens another window, tab system protect, you see system restore. This is fully approximative, because I don't have an English windows version, and I disabled the system restore feature as asked by my antivirus system.
  7. nope! No need to close apps!Windows warns you when you have to close your apps, else yo can continue what you are doing.for instance surfing the web or watching a movie only changes temporary file things, it changes nothing in the registry or in system files.Simply avoid doing heavy installs (like .net things or new java versions or something similar), create the restore point just before that in order to be able to go back.By the way, do you have a full backup of your PC, a Norton Ghost or a CloneZilla bootable backup?
  8. ouch! But this is frankly stupid! What will happen when the battery will die, after ten years usage?
  9. If you have another laptop, you could try it.However, if you do this, you could experience bluescreen at boot on your own laptop.Easily repairable when booting from the Windows CD, whicn unfortunately is precisely what you cannot currently do.

    Hello Aloha

    Hi, Phyncarrory, welcome aboard.
  11. +1 for Google agenda. It sends mail to people collaborating with you, and even allows sharing other google's people calendar.
  12. Their site was up and allowed me to download the iso file. Have a look if you don't have firewall or proxy blocking problems.
  13. really impressive, you are right. My next step : how to dynamically change the default keyboard (German keyboard is weird)
  14. However, please remember that these are 30-day trial versions!
  15. Of course, if you already have a Windows install, most of Linux distro installers ask you if you want a standard install (erase everything) or a smart installation. During the smart installation, you are asked where you want to install Linux, and you can install it on your D disk. By the way, your disk needs to have free space enough (enough unpartitionned space). C: and D: are "Windows" names, you have to look how many physical disks you have, and check that you have some unpartitionned space. For instance if your physical disk is full (partitions everywhere) you should shrink your "D:" partition in order to leave free space available for the Linux installation.
  16. letwist.net seems currently down. I will have a look at archetwist.
  17. Thanks, starscream, I will have a look at sandglaz
  18. A web-based application could be interesting if several persons had to collaborate. For instance : the "dog-sitting" task, today John proceeds, on Wednesday it's Mike turn. If Mike cannot, he goes on the web app and modifies the task.
  19. Hi, Kitexcuct, welcome aboard.I home that you will enjoy our forum.
  20. Just had the "F" key stuck on my laptop. This is weird. Had I a desktop computer, I could simply go ta a store and buy a new keyboard or pick one from my old PC. On the other one, the Ethernet adapter does not work any more. Repairing laptops is close to impossibile, whereas repairing desktop computers is so simple!

    Process Tamer

Last time I had a look at it, it was included in Microsoft Services for Unix. This thing installs nfs for windows, which is very useful if you want to create files on the Unix system, do Excel things from your PC and have the result in the same Unix filesystem. And, as far as I remember, "ps" is also there, as well as "tar", "cpio" or "kill". A very useful thing for people collaborating "the unix way". But nfs vs samba is another debate, maybe we should open another thread for it. Nevertheless, "ps" should be found there and is very useful for some geeks.

    Process Tamer

I love this name, "process tamer"!I'm so familiar, as a Unix user, to "kill -9" each process I don't understand how useful it is, that I'm happy seing such a tool for Windows!
  23. Thanks, now I understand.I am currently feeling myself invincible, but I know that several things have not to be done because I'm not invisible! People feeling invisible have another problem, we have to watch out because they first feel invisible and then they start being depressive, which can feed an endless loop which ends by a total crash. That's why I reacted, because each guy has to immediately react if a friend or a co-worker starts feeling himself invisible.
