  1. Well firstly I'd say try all the ones mentioned here, why not? But the main points would be security (meaning not internet explorer...), features (like if firefox's extensions appeal to you for all their added ability) or apparently speed (Opera?). Just try these ones and others out, compare them, and you'll probably have one that just feels better for you
  2. People who get caught commiting 'crimes' (well... something wrong at least haha) are just not putting enough effort into it Doing it at a school, especially where most are security camm'ed up the wahzoo now, is just plain dumb. Sure you'll get to witness the aftermath of your prankish behaviour, but I mean itrs not hard to catch someone doing something in a school. Now a place where the cameras are irrelevant since they still wont be able to hunt you down using your face, thats prime hunting territory...But yea, I dont see many coke machine since my campus is all pepsi (bleck) but I shall find a good target soon...soooooooooooooooon
  3. People always say ____ browser is faster, but I've never really noticed much of a speed difference. Must just be me...OH I did notice a dif back on my 26.6k connection when using opera, it was maybe 10% faster then the others... but nowadays with broadband I cant notice any difference.
  4. I only have the two drives in my main system, but we're in the process of building a storgae server type abomination that will likely have about 4-5 drives once we find ways to attach them all.... currently theres two in there but its a normal old school case so if we add more we'll need to get out the ol originality
  5. If you pay attention to some things, avant isn't a browser so much as an interface for IE... they use all the same histories and stuff... unless they've changed in the last year or so. It's got some snazz to it but I'll stick with my firefox, anything siilar to ie makes me always concious that I'm using it, waiting for a crash
  6. Yea it's a slight glimmer of hope It'd be good to see more standards, while most of us youth find technology to be second nature, it's already hard enough for older people to get accustomed to new tech without certain companies making pointless variations on things (such as icons) just to be independant and use proprietary everything. Good move M$
  7. Yea for a second I thought he meant "MS OUtlook RULES~!!!!!' like...this was a thread talking about how awesome it was....it made me cry inside... but luckily it's just someone who hasn't learned better yet.
  8. I thought it was pretty simple regardless :|...
  9. Hey hey and welcome to the forums.About adding more non-tech stuff, I think people have suggested it before and they want to keep asta pretty much tech oriented... not sure on that but for some reason I remember that. There are a few sections for other stuff but most of us are pretty tech obsessed so it'll likely remain this way for some time to come
  10. While I agree that there are alot of things missing from modern games compared to old school stuff, it is to be expected really. I mean think about it, gaming has hit the main stream, so they are going to make games that attract the most people, for the least amount of initial investment, that will bring in the most profit. The no brainer cookie cutter games that many are currently still make loads of cash for developers, and it IS a business. Sure alot of people who remember the old days where games were made for gamers who like to spend the majority of their time gaming can probably pick out elements lacking from the current generations of games, but the fact is that the game dev's are making games for everyone with money, not for the hardcore old school gamers.Personally? I wish all games would put as much effort into character design, storyline, voice acting (where apllicable), music, etc as they did the graphics... but its just not gonna be happening anytime soon excluding the odd game or two. It is, indeed, all about the benjamins
  11. Yea I've also been expecting this for awhile, it only makes sense really. They are assumedly topping out their mail order capabilities for the gamer and high performance markets since they are pretty well known by everyone online, so now if they start popping open some retail outlets it'll get the word out to the people who actually don't know about them, and show them how pimped their systems are if you want to be surgically removed from your wallet...
  12. Yea I would prefer to just use shift delete as 9 times outta 10 I prefer to shift delete, but once in awhile I like to delete something and just have it sit and wait in the recycle bin for a bit until I'm sure, so it's easier having both options readily available with just a keystroke difference.
  13. Well no, but for small scale projects its great, and once you start needing to optimize to specific machines you can start moving onto other languages as by then I would assume you understand programming.
  14. Hahaha the only thing I'd be interested in using it for would be the changing message thing, that'd be hilarious I think it'd be fun to just mess around with, so I'll try it, but if I can change the messages, oh boy, havoc shall occur *devlish grin*
  15. I dont know a huge amount about this topic, but I'll give my opinion anyways I'd say the 2.2 with 1GHZ fsb would probably have a bit of a performance boost above the other chip. a 200mhz increase in clock speed for the 2.4ghz processor isn't very much of an increase especially at those speeds, howevere an 800m->1g boost for the fsb is a 20% increase. While you obviously wont see a 20% boost in performance, I would assume that would allow the processor to work more efficiently with the power it has, rather then the 2.4ghz processor having a bit more power but not getting to take advantage of it as much.So in closing, my opinion is that the 2.2ghz 1ghz fsb proc would be slightly superior... but I'm sure some hadrware buffs will show up soon to agree or disagree with this sentiment.
  16. I agree with the notion of java first. Its alot easier to get a huge amount of the concept down without much effort, and this allows you to spend your time learning things like common algorithms and data structures and whatnot. With C some of the things actually would take a fair bit of effort to learn on TOP of the other things, so I say for a beginnier programmer java first is the way to go. Always good to be spoon fed for the first little while, no?
  17. Addictive games of my past:Total AnnihilationDiabloMechwarrior 2 / 4Deus ExCounter-Strike (orig and source)Final Fantasy/Chrono series'Probably a handful of other ones, but those are the ones that stand out in my mind as having stolen way more time from me then they should have been able to. Multiple replays and scouring them for little hidden gems just to drain every ounce of enjoyment possible from the titles. Ah yes, good times have been had.
  18. Logan, if you want to run everything at max everything just get dual pci-e 7800gt's Might cost a few bucks, but it'll kick any game out there's *bottom* right now haha
  19. Yea the 6000 was actually the Dell I was planning to get if I get a Dell. My only worry about it is it seems kinda heavy/bulky size compared to the others I've been looking at. My main reason for getting a laptop is to be mobile with it... I know I can't get an ultra thin and light one since I'm working on a budget but I might go with a slimmer and lighter model if I get the chance. But don't worry youre opinions are noted and Dell is a strong contender in my mind
  20. I'm running a 9800 pro 128mb and can run every game I've tried acceptably. Sure I cant max out Doom 3 or F.E.A.R. but I can get the settings to a pretty respectable medium-high usually and everything looks and runs great. Since there isn't much upgrade room without going PCI-E I''ll probably try to wait a year or more and then just upgrade the majority of my rig once it starts chugging trying to run the new games at their lowest settings heh.If you're interested, other system specs are:2.8ghz P4 w/HT1.5gb ram6.1 onboard sound (assu mobo)120gb hd
  21. My roomates 360 was been working fine *knocks on wood* maybe we just pwn too much for it to glitch out :|Yea...if I tell myself that enough it'll be true...yeeeaaa....oh well, I didn't spend my money on it
  22. Awesome. Thanks for the input. I've really been watching the presario's, they're looking like a strong contender. I really dont need alot of power in the notebook, ram and hard drive size are some of the big factors. As long as the lappy is snappy responsive for normal tasks that would likely be enough for me, especially once I get linux on it.Anyone else have opinions?
  23. Alright, so I've finally come to the conclusion that I want to spend some cash on a notebook computer. It is not going to be a desktop replacement by any means, I just want something portable to take to class, do some coding on, surf the web, the basics. It'll be nice not being tied to my desk when I feel like doing some coding or whatnot... the living room shall become my homework haven... Anyways I have been looking around for one to buy and comming up a bit short. Lots of choices and I don't know for sure what would be the best choice. The only real guidelines I have is that it should be around $1000 Canadian, have one of the better processor types (no celeron for moi), at least 512mb ram, and at least a 60gb hd. Screen size isn't important really and the lighter/smaller the better. What I need from you guys is any of the following:Suggestions for laptops that hit these criteria or betterOpinions on the budget Compaq notebooksOpinions on the Dell Inspiron 6000 line of notebooksOpinions on the Toshiba Satellite line of notebooks (the $1000 range ones obviously)Opinions on Acer notebooksI've found lots of compaq and acer ones that 'look' like they'd be great, but I've heard bad things about them in the past so am unsure about their recent hardware. The Dell Inspiron 6000 looks to also be a great deal but other dell's I've used or seen seem bulky and put off alot of heat. Then the toshiba ones look amazing and I've onyl heard good things but they're hard to find in my price range without taking a heavy hardware hit.So basically any and all comments will be greatly appreciated. Comments on which mobile processor to go for, models of laptops you've used or own that fit my criteria, any general suggestions or comments, anything to help me make up my mind. Too many possibilities are ruining my ability to make a quick choice haha. So yes, thanks in advance to anyone who gives me some info to work with
  24. Hm, dont have time to read all the responses or make a full post right now. But I did a huge research paper last year for a uni course and its an amazing field of research. I voted 'for' since I would feel bad if I ever voted against it, since stem cell research has the best hope of curing alzheimers (which my grand mother has) and if anything could cure her and help countless others, its fine in my book, even if you need to play in some grey areas of ethics on the way...
  25. Hearing someone saying that the nintendo rev will be greater then either the xbox 360 or PS3 makes my mind bleed.... but I digressWe got a 360 for our apartment and I'll admit its awesome but its nothing revolutionary. I think they'll be lucky to have their games to PS3 levels by the time the PS3 is released. My prediction is still that the PS3 is going to rape the 360 in regards of power and abilities but we'll have to wait and see. Game wise its preferance obviously. Now this isn't to say I dislike the 360 lol, it seems like its got tonnes of potential and I'm addicted to the games we hav for it now. I just expected a little more and cant wait for the next gen of games for it to see if they start tapping its power more.
