  1. Are the beeps comming when you are in windows proper, or just when it won't even boot? Since, as I mentioned, beeps on failed boot attempts are special warning beeps. But yea if all these things are going wrong at once it's probably a motherboard issue or a power supply issue (if your power supply is dieing and not enough power is getting into the comp, everything would act unpredictably)Good luck
  2. Got any links or images? Sounds like a cool concept but I'm wondering how they did it exactly. I've seen those usb braille boards that write out in braille what is on the screen, but this sounds more input then output.
  3. Things to take note of:Are there any beeps when it won't boot? Beeps are warning messages from the motherboard, which you could check with the manual to figure out the problem possiblyIs any power getting to the motherboard when it wont boot? If there are any lights on the backs lit up, you know its an issue with the computer itself... I've had problems with faulty powerbars before that made it look like the computer was messed but really the powerbar was just dieing. If you have any old computers, you could try swapping compatible parts out to see if it will boot with the dif hardware. Then you could figure out if a single component is fried.Open the case and make sure everything is connected firmly. If a power cable is loose inside it could cause boot problems. Those are general tipcs for what could be causing it to not boot... but really since there were problems beforehand I'd almost say something on your motherboard was dieing... since the internal clock was getting screwed up before the booting problems even occurred. I'd say wait it out, reboot as rarely as possible and wait to see if anyone else knows the issue. OTherwise, off to the tech shop you go heh
  4. My guess is they'll just make the space you have now useable as a drive, seems like it'd be the simplest at least to start with.I know it'll be nice. I used those other frontends for awhile but having various limitations was annoying (no file above 10megs for some, glitchy for others) it just wasn't worth it. If they make a solid GDrive I'll probably make use of it.By use, however, I'll useit for not so important things heh. With all the controversy over privacy with gmail... I can't see me storing much sensitive data on it. I mean I don't -need- to use it for anything anyways (I have ftps... thumb drives...) but it would ne convenient for random files that are inconsequential. But yea, I think I'm in the 'lacking trust' camp right now. Not so much because I mistrust google, but because I know how certain governments can often get what they want :oGotta say though, I love that people found out about this first because google posted webpages or info that they didn't mean to... you'd think by now they would have a good handle on this intarwebses thing
  5. But only use one of them... because you wouldn't want people running around with too much stuff in their sigs... *cough*
  6. ...Are you implying that because firefox is said to be good they should just never update it? Well... that makes sense But yes obviously this update won't mean anything to people who don't use firefox much, except that once the final rev is released it might draw a handful more people away from the painful IE...
  7. I was actually just looking into AO... they have that free user account for the base AO game until January 2007 thing going on... might just have to download that tonight and try it out W00 for free haha
  8. Do you know if your FF crashing is some issue that alot of people have or just you? I've only had FF crash once or twice...ever. If it is a common prob I'm sure they'd be working on it, crash bugs make people stop using software quite regularly :|
  9. I want to say I played it... but the screens on their site don't look familiar.. maybe I played an old build on an older engine or something. Assuming I'm thinking of the right game, I really enjoyed it...for a short time. It was a good experience but it didn't hold me tooo long. Was an enjoyable enough time though for a freebie so kudos for that. Maybe I'll have to try it again to check if it is indeed what I am thinking of
  10. I never really knew their were even extensions giving undo close tab, but now that I think about it I want that feature bad haha :|As far as the spell-as-you-type, not sure how much it would affect me but meh, why not throw it in there (persoanlly the filesize of the proggy is irrelevant to me ). I'm glad a major release is on the horizon... no real reason I just like new toys to tinker around with heh.
  11. Hatim - My concern wasn't actually having to download the flash animations, it's that if people all start using flash even more, there will be even more sites with horrid looking annoying flash crap... flash is one of the best things to have happened to the net.. and one of the worst So much flash trash out there with all the badly animated overloaded put you in a seizure type sites :|But yea throw up a link to the news article if you have one, I have a few curiosities based on what your original comments stated...
  12. Yea, if you used any paricular methods or tutorials to guide your way, you should post them. While the overall final images aren't really my style a few of the effects could be useful to know how to do
  13. That's cool then. Like I said usually people who say these boosters have an awesome speed increase... it means pages load in a minute rather then 2 haha. But yea if it actually boosts speeds noticeably on a high speed connection I'll have to check it out
  14. Haha I never even thought to see if mplayer had a windows version :| I've used it in various linux distro's since I started linuxing but never thought to try it out for windows. I guess I *dont* need to look for a new media player, just move my current between platforms heh
  15. Personally I kind of like it now that I read your explanation... seems like a cool idea. Starting off with a really plain basic banner and fleshing it out as the RPG grows. On it's own it's kinda lacking but if you plan to have it grow, that's cool.My only gripe about it would be the bottom of the tree... something about it I can't put my finger on bugs me a bit. I don't think I like it expanding out and then the blue circle, almost would prefer having it just disappear off the side... but that's just me
  16. hmm, I think I have vlc player too. Use it for files that I get in some format or another that the other progs can't handle... not that I get retail movies in such odd formats...but...my uh..."friends"...encode...uh..."home movies"... in that weird format... yupp..But yea it's a solid player but I've noticed some weird results with it. Nothing directly affecting the movie watching experience, but just sort of oddities in the program. The time codes being wrong is the one I noticed the most, where an hour and a half or longer movie read as being like 30 some minutes... doesn't really affect anything but annoying.I never really put much thought into my media player choice... I'll have to look into this when I'm home :|
  17. Obviously your whole system isn't 4 years old...as your vid card is quite new. I know he doesn't NEED anything more to run whats out their now. I'm saying if he's actually going to drop that kind of cash on a system, why not future proof it. Yours is still running after 4 years, but required upgrades to run BF2 fine no doubt. His system should last a pretty long time without upgrades running everything fine I just don't see why if you're dropping over 2 grand for a system, you wouldn't put an extra 50 or so into another gig of ram. Seems like a small price to finish off making the system excel in every area, instead of exceling in most but being averaged by the ram.Obviously this is just my opinion, but my system had 512 megs of ram in it until recently and it was hurting in alot of games. I added a gig, and voila games are running smoothly that only require 512... shocking. F.E.A.R., BF2, HL2, Doom3, all hardware inetnsive games and they showed a huge improvement with more ram. If games already crave a gig or more to run well, how long until games crave more then that to run at their best? If you are buying an alienware system, you should want your games running at their best for a long time.Regardless, he'll have a good system, he'll just need to start adding stuff sooner.
  18. jake, what kind of net connection do you have? Usually those types of things impact 56k's much more then high speeds...I used to use bugmenot all the time, forgot about it recently since I installed firefox on a clean system. I'll have to grab it again and try out those new ones. I used to be big into extensions but I don't use as many now, still have quite a number. Usually I like to keep a weather tracker extension for forcasts, a css viewer, some enhanced page source viewing extensions, and some menu modifiers. Porbably a couple others but nothing amazing really. They sort of rotate too as I get bored of some and pick up new ones haha. Thats the great thing about the extensions too, you can use them as long as you want them then just disable them if you want them gone,
  19. Is the player actually better?... never really paid attention to it. I always just grabbed it for the included codecs and the odd movie that is glitchy on other players. Anyone else notice it being noticeably better then mp?
  20. Oh joy, more websites will start being more polluted with awful flash animations... cant wait :oHeh, on a serious note it's always great to see a tech advance, but I assume it'll be a fair while before it hits this side of the pond (especially here in Canada). Until then the majority of webpages won't customize to those user's since Brits make up only a small portion of web users, and of those only a certain portion will even have this megauberpwnt-internet
  21. I dunno about the classics, but yea I would love a NFS game with a bit more muscle in it. Most wanted had a wider range of cars then usual but its still mostly tuners and high performance modern cars. I want some old school chargers or something (not the new ones) and other gas guzzling behemoth's to race against the ricers heh
  22. I was basing my comments on all games, not just one that runs well even though the rec's say a gig Oblivion is comming out this year and REQUIRES a gig, reccomends more. The next gen of games will all start requiring a gig within the year I'd bet. No way a gig will last you 3 years.
  23. The reason I said more ram is because 1 gig is enough... for games this year, by next year some'll be up above that I bet. Obviously you're DUAL video card setup isn't REQUIRED for games right now haha, but you have it. I assumed you wanted a system that won't need upgrades in a year or so.
  24. ...I have a feeling there are no legal ways to do this excluding things like mentioned where you get a free short term trial...and if you are asking for illegal ways you'll be warned then banned :oIf you want to play an MMORPG without the monthly fee, try guild wars
  25. Haha, well officially my interest in Gentoo was sparked by my older brother back in the day... but its the thought that counts lol.
