  1. Nice! This is one script I'll have to save and play with! B)I use a similar system except the site is controlled through a MySQL database to save file space. Very nice! [N]F
  2. I knew the day would come! I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!Now Mac users can't brag about how viruses can't affect them! I'll have to update my English teacher about this as he is a Mac fanatic... total of 7 Macs in the classroom, 3 PCs.. of course, District Technology doesn't like Macs so they're kind of unsupported.. but every computer HAS to have antivirus and spyware scanners unless it is locked down with Deep Freeze since a reboot will clear a virus.Hahaha!! I'm going to let my teacher know Tuesday when I'm back in school.[N]F
  3. I don't have any tattoos and I don't plan on getting any either! I just don't want something like that on me. I'm actually not crazy about them either. Now I don't mind those rub on tattoos, but I'm still not a big fan of those either.[N]F
  4. Yes. Dreamweaver is a professional WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web page editor. You design your site then you upload the HTML (or PHP or whatnot) up to the server live on the Internet. [N]F sorry if it isn't clear.. I've had a rough day and I'm not in the best mood right now but I'm trying to relax a bit.
  5. This is pretty much the same thing with the whole AMD/Intel thing... Intel was paying computer companies big bucks to use its processors (aka, unfair competition) which resulted in a law suit. This is why I despise Intel a lot. It is unfair business.. and hurts the economy.Anyway, Intel knows AMD processors preform better and are better so they want to hurt AMD as much as possible... how? BIG PAYOFFS! If you were a company (software or computer) and Intel offered you, oh $70 Million or more a year if you support them and if you even support AMD, you'd lose the contract and the cash? I sure would support Intel! That's how it works (of course, there could be billions involved, but same idea)[N]F
  6. NewEgg is very good. Shipping is excellent but their shipping prices are a little steep for some items. I like the wide selection of products offered. They are also great for network cable too! Dirt cheap prices! [N]F
  7. That is really odd to tell you the truth. I have 4 computers (2 laptops and 2 desktops) and each can be on at the same time. One desktop also has two active ethernet. Download rates all stay the same. I've never seen it where one computer hoggs all the bandwidth. One good place to start is by checking your settings. [N]F
  8. You can't... chmoding is a Linux/Unix thing because Linux/Unix work all around file permissions. Windows dosen't use file permissions like in Unix so you don't need to do anything. When the script executes, if it opens and writes to a file, it'll do that without anything in Windows, but will require CHMOD of 777 on Unix. I've run plenty of scripts that require to be chmoded on UNIX to 777 and I haven't touched any file settings in Windows. Where did you read that you had to set the file to readable? [N]F
  9. Just to add on to what m^e said, you don't think that Yahoo is buying shared server space do you? Nope, they knock the server offline in no time! For disk space, you just add 100+ mail servers (as needed though) and you cluser them together. Now, in addition to the mail servers, you need a few clusters of web servers for the sites. I was reading about this over the summer, but if Google and Yahoo had only one main web server, the site would be too slow (even if you had a 320K download rate) and the server would always be under too much stress to operate. So, you add on a few extra servers. Now, you need to set those servers to mirror each other because no one wants to FTP a change to 100 servers. Next, there is a load balancing "switch" (to say) and what it does, is when a request comes in for https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl, it checks each server for the number of connections and works something like this: You request https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl -> load balancing switch checks servers: SERVER 1: FULL SERVER 2: FULL SERVER 3: LOW SERVER 4: LOW SERVER 5: MED. SERVER 6: DOWN etc.. etc.. In the above senario with only 6 server, first two are a bit crowded so your connection is placed on either server 3, 4, or 5. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that even if you switch a page on a site, it goes through the same process. (m^e, you wanted to know about bandwidth...) Now for bandwidth, Yahoo's data center is like none other except that it probably has the Yahoo logo on the building, but each data center works the same. To get online, they purchase dedicated fiber optic lines from several providers such as Savvis, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, etc. and route them into their super fast network. Some lines may be put on stand by so if lets say the AT&T line goes down, the backup line, such as Savvis, can be activated and so you wouldn't even guess that one of their lines were down. Also, don't think they have a million DSL lines. NO WAY. Most usually have a few OC-93 fiber lines coming into the facility. Just to give you an idea, OC-93 lines are as fast as I think 23 T-1 lines bundled together and have a rate of 9 or 10 gigabits a second! (If they didn't cost like $23,000 a month, I'd get one of these for my network!) This is how they can keep everything fast and accessible! And they probably can burn through several hundred gigabytes A DAY! Cheers! [N]F
  10. Xisto* and I think this topic should be in programming, but I'll leave that up to a mod. Anywho, HTML is the base language (if you can call it that) that forms a website. EVERYTHING on the web uses HTML and is (usually) enhanced with some sort of server side scripting (PHP, Perl, etc). Hmm.. reminds me that I should finish up my site which is about this sort of thing. Just remember, when it comes to your first site, you've got several best friends: Notepad, Google, and Xisto forums. When you're starting out, I DON'T suggest using any sort of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor such as FrontPage or DreamWeaver which is not aimed at starters anyway. I started off in Notepad and learned HTML until I felt comfortable. Though I still kind of new to web design, I've made several templates that I have been told look very professional. It will take a while, just work hard at it! No cheating either with those free WYSIWYG editors! Later on down the road, you'll thank me! I didn't spend as much time in Notepad as I should so my tables always seem to come out "strange", but that's my fault. Take your time with it and don't worry about your design at first. My first "real" site was an ugly blue background non-standard fonts and looked terrible. You get the hang of it and then it comes natrual and soon, you'll know "right" from "wrong" and you'll get HTML down. Then you can move on to things such as my favorite language: PHP! But that is another topic at a later time. Good luck with your learning! [N]F
  11. hehe... go m^e that I did. Anywho, the nice thing is, even when the IP changes on the router, it (the router) automatically updates the DNS service for me. I think it updates every 30 seconds or less or something, but I don't have to do anything! So far, you can open command prompt and type "ipconfig" and now instead of seeing "domain.invalid" which was driving me crazy, it now shows my network domain! I have a question though. Just to make sure you understand my ISP, Alltel, only provides 1 IP and that goes to the router. Say I wanted to launch 2 web servers on two different domains. How could I acheve this? Since I also have to allow inbound port 80, I specify port 80 and the internal IP on the router. Thanks!! [N]F
  12. Thanks, m^e! Yep, CJB.net is pretty much like a .com, except free and blocked by N2H2 (web filter) as "Web Page Hosting" but I can even set it up for DynamicDNS and even an IP if so wanted. I checked out my site, everything seems to be working properly. Best of all, I got it off of that terrible host that lied "no ads" soon became "10 pixel banner" to "small ads" (their 10pix banner + google ads) I can finally rest in satisfaction! [N]F
  13. Yeppers! I recently got a new connection when I got a new router since my old wireless network bridge (netgear) wasn't compatable with the Linksys router so I had a 50 footer running from the router to my room into a hub, into a 3 foot cable to my old netgear with a switch in it (I got lucky!) and then a cable from that to my computer. That's how I got online for a while. Since I couldn't have all the cable running through the house, my dad bought 100 feet cable, crimpers and RJ-45(?) connectors I think all for under $100! Now there is a cable that runs under the floor to my room! It's great! Just buy bulk and you can save! Plus, bulk has advantages too... say a cable suddenly goes bad. You can instantly repair the problem quickly! [N]F
  14. For my member's profiles, I currently have it where it yanks the requested user's email in plain text out of the database and displays it in pure text on the page... Not good if a spam bot comes around! I have a book on PHP graphics, but I can't figure it out so maybe someone here can help me. To get the right email for the right user, it should use what the main profile uses to get the info, the username. I should be able to call up the script like this: (THIS IS ALL WRAPPED IN PHP CODING SO THE "\" IS NEEDED)<img src=\"emailgfx.php?user=$user\">This should be expandable based on length of email address too. The example in the book isn't and requires a set size. Also, the font nees to be Verdana, 10 Pts. Thanks for any help!! [N]F
  15. I have two Gmail accounts (one is for school website stuff since I am a student webmaster and the other is my personal account) but somehow my second account which is far newer got the web based chat and I'm still waiting for my personal account to get it! :)From a test today after school with a friend, we tested it out but I found a weird bug too... sometimes when you pop-out and pop back in, the pop-in never appears and there is a blinking cursor right in the middle of the page... lo and behold, I could type though not see anything except the cursor move. I forget if it was in IE or Firefox because the lab I was in has IE right on the desktop, and Firefox in Start > Browsers > Firefox and that is usually too much clicking for me... plus the computers have Deep Freeze on them so the install of Firefox is 1.0.8, not very good!Back on subject, I found it to be quite useful, but I'm a little worried about what the service provider will do since content filtering is enabled by N2H2... it blocks AIM, MSN and Yahoo requests, but I HOPE that Gmail doesn't get blocked because of this. A year ago, Gmail login box was blocked (yes, it was... but the rest of the Gmail site wasn't... just the login) so it was impossible to access mail but then the folks at Secure Computing (makers of Bess/N2H2) updated it to allow it... hopefully they don't block it!Well, I better be off to bed as it is 10:30 PM here and I've got more school tomorrow and I have to deal with a whole lot of stuff! I'll post more later![N]F
  16. lol, m^e, would that also mean those underground hackers that hide from Microsoft developing viruses as a way to get Microsoft to fix security? It seems to be the only thing that works... the "bad" hackers find and exploit security holes verses a letter to them stating what they have found (of course, knowing MS, they'd send the cops out after them because they cracked open the shell of information) Anyway, if it wasn't for "hackers", things would be pretty dull too... Such as Window Blinds and Firefox just to name some examples... [N]F
  17. OMG... the first things that you posted (package details and price) just shot up a RED FLAG! This sounds like one of those "too good to be true" offers...Next, it it sounds A LOT like AOL... *rolls eyes*. Are you sure there wasn't an AOL logo anywhere on the site? j/k but it sounds TOO MUCH like an AOL thing to be honest! Now, to get back on topic, I am quite shocked that a web host would do this since customer service is is like 90% of the business![N]F
  18. I want to move my one site off of this free host server because of forced ads and would like to share my Xisto account for hosting the other site. Except for some reason, it keeps showing my old host's DNS IP addresses. Note that the domain I'm using is a free CJB.NET domain (it's all I can afford, lol).Should I request that my account be deleted on my old host or do I need to wait out 24-48 hours for the DNS to re-propagate?Thanks for any help! I've never done this before and I MUST move my site to get rid of the ads off of it. Thanks again![N]F
  19. Checking out some Yahoo! News, Yahoo!, Inc. and (gulp) America Online have come up with a way to get email directly into your inbox, bypassing spam filters. The cost for this "e-postage" will range in 1/4th of a cent to 1 cent for 1 "e-stamp" (1 stamp per message). Source: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/- Related Links: http://www.goodmailsystems.com/ My views: Bill Gates first came up with the idea for this 1 cent thing (just another money maker for him) but personally, I think it is stupid. The whole reason for email, is that it is FREE and instant delivery. I don't have to waste 39 (?) cents per message and have it arrive two days later. That is the whole reason for email. "Yeah, so, it is only one cent!" YES, BUT, no one wants to pay for email. I most certianly do not. I don't mind cleaning out my spam box everyday, but still, my spam box catches 4 of 5 spam messages per day. I'm good. Anyways, the last time I checked, the Internet was free. (Except for bandwidth) [N]F
  20. I don't have a mysterious blank... However, I think what abhiram suggested *MIGHT* work. I think this is how I would set it up on my template page: <?phpif(isset($announcement))echo "<p class=\"announcement\">$announcement</p>";?>Does that look correct? [N]F
  21. Yeah, exactly. Actually, PEN and PAPER PERIOD will be made illegal and everything must be provided in electronic form and everyone will have to have all hard drive contents synced with a public FTP server. [N]F
  22. haha! I'm happy with my gmail email account. Mail servers are too much of a hassle. If I do anything, it will be under Windows. I love Linux to death, but I'm not exactly skilled in it. Either FTP won't let me in or Apache is flipping out... guess what courses I'm going to take in college! :)omg... what am I thinking? lol, this is just a home network! I'm not running a data center (although I would!)Mainly, I've been using my domain to connect to my router at school and check things. I've also created an Intranet site on an old computer that I'm using as a server. The only problem that I have found is that my ISP, Alltel, gives the router an external IP and so all computers on my network share that IP. I need to figure a way to launch multiple servers, each with their own domain or use the network domain...[N]F
  23. I have been working on a new template and I would like it so that if in the global configuration file, I have a variable for a global site announcement that would go on every page. The line in the global configuration file is this: $announcement = "ANNOUNCEMENT";In my template file, I could easily add <?php echo $announcement; ?>but that would leave a blank space and with the announcement style (similar to the Invision Power Board error box). Is there some sort of script that could be put in the template page so I could have the global config file look something like this: //Turn on announcement; 1 means on, 0 means off $announcementOn = 1//Announcement Text:$announcement = "Blah" Basically, if there is a "1" on $announcementOn, it enables code that echos the stylesheet class and displays the announcement in $announcement so when any page is displayed on the site, the announcement is shown. Thanks for any help! [N]F
  24. LEGALLY you'd have to have multiple licenses (1 per computer/cpu however MS does it) and the way you're talking (server/client) you'd want an application server. An application server is a server that applications are installed on (duh!) and are "virtually" installed on client machines. However, you'd need to have the correct number of licenses from MS.But take hatim's advice and go with openoffice. I use it side by side with my office xp (I prefer office xp over 2003) and I got my friend to even use OpenOffice because he didn't want to pay for a stupid MS office license.btw, I'm on the marketing project of OpenOffice so I'd better tell you to use OpenOffice! [N]F
  25. Hey,I was looking through the config pages of my Linksys WRT54G router and found a Dynamic DNS page and decided, what the heck might as well try it. Since I'm restricted to two services (DynDNS.org and TZO.com) I tried out DynDNS.org and got a domain for my network.I also enabled remote management so I can be at school or on the road and can check the status of my network or remotely do something to the router without having to get the IP since Alltel DSL is dynamic which is a real pain but since I can go days, I usually have the same IP for awhile unless the network decides to go wild.I was just wondering if I can do more with this domain other than remote router management? I don't know much about domains being used on a network and would like to see what I can do with it!Thanks![N]F
