  1. Hey,Does anyone know of any "free" network design software? Anything that can aid in mapping out a network (if you work on an enterprise or really large network) like the technical diagrams to map out routers, switches, hubs?Anything would be great![N]F
  2. Hey guys! I'm finally moving away from my old 512 MB secondhand MP3 player and would like to know what you guys suggest.Although I don't like Apple, I'm tempted to jump on the iPod bandwagon with either a Nano or Video. NOT the shuffle... I can see myself "shuffling" around trying to find it (yes, that is supposed to be a pun) ... So if you have an iPod video or nano, please tell me what you think!!Thanks![N]F
  3. Contact them. That's the best advice I can give you. Calm down! Your problem is this: https://...... you're trying to use a secure connection which there is none available. Just change the script over to http://....... and you'll be fine. See, here's the link without the https://.... : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It works perfectly! Don't think that you're alone. I get frustrated all the time and it ends up being a stupid mistake. I ALWAYS forget a semi-colon or a squiggly bracket SOMEWHERE in a PHP script and then I get all frustrated. Let me know if you need anything else! [N]F
  4. You're using PHP's mail() function so you don't need a user/pass because it is being sent via PHP's mail() function, NOT directly using a SMTP server. I copied your script to my Xisto account and it worked perfectly fine. The script works. Be sure that the email isn't getting marked as spam or something at the email "prosurf AT sapo DOT pt". That's where the fault is, not your script. [N]F
  5. the user/pass is your Cpanel user/passif you're using a subdomain, the mail server should be mail.astahost.com. If you're using your own domain, it would be mail.YOURDOMAIN.EXT[N]F
  6. I use CoreFTP. Core is free and very professional... I mean, even the latest edition of WS_FTP Pro has an annoying bug in it but Core is stable! It's very nice.I suggest you check it out! (BTW, it's for Windows, I don't think there is a Linux one. I do most of my web development on my Windows machine)
  7. What is this script called? On Xisto, you should have access to the PHP Mail() function along with SMTP. Authentication (I forget which protocol it's needed for) would be your hosting account username and password. [N]F
  8. Hello,I found out that Canon has no drivers for my printer, NOR do they plan to develop any!!! Since they obviously have something against Linux users, is there any sort of way to find a driver? Or am I stuck using this printer ONLY on my Windows laptop?I HATE companies like these... If I was a developer, I'd develop my own freaking driver!!! I'll give searching the web a try.... just want to see what you think.Update: did a search... absolutely no luck... forum post to forum post, all say the same thing...[N]F
  9. I think it was originally developed by AT&T (yes the phone company) and then at some point I think was sold to Novell and then Novell sold it to SCO. And to this day, I don't think that UNIX is free but you can purchase the source code as well. [N]F
  10. If you could please re-word your text in easy-to-understand-English I or someone else, might be able to easily help you! Thanks! [N]F
  11. 1) Parents & ANY kind of technology DO NOT MIX. Trust me. 2) Explain to them that you can do EXACTLY what you do on Windows... it's just a different interface. The only problem I have is connecting to a printer attached to a Windows computer. I'm sure I could get a "real" network printer working using CUPS. 3) Avoid the greedy monopolists!! Free & open source is BETTER than locked and VERY insecure source. But yeah, dual boot Ubuntu & Windows. Your parents can use that worthless thing and you can enjoy a REAL operating system! [N]F
  12. This is kind of "old-news" but I've found the next Firefox, codename Bon Echo. This new version has some cool new features such as inline spell check so you can easily spell check posts here or anywhere (it even works in Google's Gmail!) It's very cool... I just don't like the name. My web design teacher was making fun of it calling it "bone cho"... Even the Alpha 2 of Firefox 3.0 is better: Deer Park. To get the Bon Echo release (WARNING: DEVELOPERS AND TESTERS ONLY!!!! It's ALPHA stage so it is unstable and Mozilla has it posted that you're warned!) check out this page: http://www-archive.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/releases/2.0a2.html [N]F
  13. I've always have run a tight ship so I very rarely get a virus, but I've got a client who has somehow managed to get some sort of mailer Trojan horse on their computer HOWEVER, Norton Antivirus has the virus isolated and ready for removal. From the instruction sheet (I'm assuming they got it from Symantec), they updated Norton and did a full system scan. The virus shouldn't do anything since Norton has it quaritined, correct? Now, it may have injected values into the Registry (which is why they want me to do it as they don't know what the registry is, let alone know how to access it and delete values from it). I don't think this will be a problem since I can read the Symantec technical data sheets so the registry is not a problem.Working on Linux a lot makes me glad I don't have to deal with viruses... man, Windows sucks...[N]F
  14. Hmm... they seem to have the domain now pointing to this one: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Doesn't seem to have the virus anymore... [N]F
  15. I hate to bring back an old thread but, I got my copies today and I'm loving it!Note: I also found out that Ubuntu doesn't like HP media center PCs X Server refused to start and I had a broken shell. I ran the Live CD on another (older, MUCH older) computer and works like a charm!I'm ordering more for when I get my computer building service going, I'm going to offer Ubuntu as an OS option next to Windows... or thow in a copy of it [N]F
  16. I'm not a huge VoIP fan. I love my DSL line for doing what it's ment to: DATA. It runs through the same cables as phone so it really doesn't matter. Since a phone line is like a double decker bridge, DSL travels the high-bandwidth upper deck and low bandwidth voice calls use the lower deck (I think, they might be reversed). Dial-up and VoIP users just use one deck... you pay for both decks, might as well use them! [N]F
  17. Ok, from what I'm seeing, here are the plans:100 MB Disk space, 3 gigs bandwidth150 MB Disk space, 2 gigs bandwidth50 MB Disk space, 4 GIGS????What the heck?! The bandwidth doesn't line up!! The only *reasonable* package that might be good for BASIC hosting is the 100 MB disk space one... Why the heck would you want 50 MEGS of disk space for 4 GIGS bandwidth???? you couldn't possibly fit that many bandwidth sucking files on that kind of web space... even if your site DID become popular (but with that hosting company, kind of doubt it). They need to recalculate their plans for sure. Nothing equals... That's like Xisto giving 1 gig of disk space and 50 MB of bandwidth or 1 gig disk space and 50 gigs of bandwidth (wasted resources *cough*)[N]F
  18. lol, I thought it would download fast. Anyway, I hated seeing that page. It was stopping me from getting my email at school and I was ticked off when they installed the new filter! Also, FTP works blazing fast like it should because I just use the internal IP to connect. Otherwise, it's going to be just like trying to download. Ok, here's the hosts file: 192.168.1.101 is my Windows laptop, 192.168.1.100 is my server (Xerge) Here's hosts.allow file: I'm assuming that is how you wildcard in these files? I'd like to have it wildcarded so that way I can get on another computer and *poof!* have it appear same speed. Thanks, m^e! [N]F
  19. I'm up for this idea! Personally, I'd hate to be charged 29 cents (or whatever Cingular charges for txt) just to make an emergency call. I can't txt a fast rate so I'd rather speak to someone. An emergency button would be nice! I mean, they could put GPS software on the mobiles and when an incoming call comes in, it relays your current location and then the police come. [N]F
  20. Ok, m^e... it didn't appear to work... except, I'm on a Fedora Core 5 server now. Here's something funny: FTP is blazing fast but HTTP downloads are still VERY sluggish... I modified the files to reflect what you had (changed of course to match my network) and restarted eth0. Sluggish. I'm curious here...hmmm... m^e (or anyone else if you want to), could you check if the following page downloads fast or sluggish? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ You should see a Bess (Smartfilter Bess Edition) blockpage blocking the address "gmail.google.com". For a while, my school was blocking Gmail so I saved the page to show the technology department and to have some fun! Anyway, whenever I visit it, it feels like I have dial-up again because it downloads so freaking slow! If you want, m^e, I'll post my hosts file and hosts.allow file for you to take a look at and modify. For reference, my network's internal IPs are 192.161.1.100 through 199. The fedora server is 192.168.1.100 and my Windows machine is 192.168.1.101. The server's IP is static, mine isn't because I normally keep my computer always running so when the IP expires after 24 hours, it gets renewed again. Thanks for the help!! [N]F
  21. Nah... it does this just so it can add MORE security holes to the EXISTING thousands of them and it wants to make sure that you have widely open holes for hackers to get into... duh! lol. What I find REALLY annoying is if you have any wireless network adapter installed, if you don't have it turned on or are in an area that has NO wireless network, it pops a stupid ballon up that says there's no connection and no wireless networks were found. But since my laptop has a little switch to turn WLAN on or off, I keep it off since I just use a Ethernet connection. Everytime I boot Windows, it tells me that there are no networks available... it's REALLY annoying.. I'm just glad I switched over to Linux... I tried to get my laptop on Linux, but for some reason, it doesn't like Linux at all... NO distro installs... bunch of kernel panics and aborts... oh well, that's what my desktop system is for! [N]F
  22. lol, thanks m^e! It also appears to work on any distro that I launch on my network. Like I had a 333 MHz PII Red Hat 9 machine and it loaded fast when I accessed it via 192.168.1.107 but when I accessed it via my network domain, it's like the request was being sent all around the globe asking every server if they had that file... it was slow like 28K slow... probably less! I'm going to print out a copy of your fix to try it. My server is currently down for some hardware swapping and a fresh Red Hat 9 install. Then I'll give it a test! Anyway, my network is like a slightly smaller version of a enterprise network. It really is. My router has one computer attached, and one cable that runs through my house to my room and from there into my old network hub which I got from my school for free. From there a wireless access point and usually 3-2 PCs will be connected and two connect via the router's access point and/or the other access point (the other one is mainly so I can get a better connection outside need be). But I'm going to go ahead and print out your fix and try it. Thanks, m^e!! To answer your question, giantsfanster, as far as I know any Cat5/5e cable will take PoE. My school just put in a new IP phone system from Cisco and some of the new switches put power through the existing Ethernet wiering to power some of the phones. Of course, not all of the IP phone switches were PoE but it does eliminate power jacks. You also have to be careful with it too. If you use too short of a cable, you could fry the electronics/ethernet card or whatever it is that is using PoE. I found a link for a PoE Injector/Power Supply. They have some technical data that you may be interested in. Here's the link: http://www.l-com.com/content/hyperlinkbrand.html. [N]F
  23. Ah, well, never really use dual Ethernet anyways. When Windows was on this machine, I just used one for web server requests and another for FTP. Until I switched this machine over to Linux. I just never pulled the other card out. All my other distros (except SuSE) were fine with the dual card setup except Red Hat. I was just wondering if there was some sort of compatability issue or something. Thanks![N]F
  24. Hello,A while ago before I installed Fedora Core 5, I tried installing Red Hat Linux 9 on the following system:-Intel Pentium III 900 MHz CPU-512 RAM-Dual Ethernet (10/100)However, during installation, the Ethernet cards were never found so I couldn't get online. Now, I'm installing Red Hat 9 on this (much) older computer, Pentium II and I don't remember the CPU speed, 128 RAM (I think) and this time during install, Red Hat found the Ethernet. This system has an 3Com card that was taken out of my other system.I was just wondering if Red Hat had any issues with dual Ethernet from different providers. I forget what card is in this machine.[N]F
