I have a news feed I'd like to display on a PHP page. I know PHP-Nuke has built in RSS feeds that you can display a feed with, but does anyone know how to take a RSS feed and display it using PHP?Thanks![N]F

What Is Dns And How Does Dns Work?
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Computer Networks
Ah, I am starting to get it! So like I have hosting here (with a cjb.net domain because I don't have enough money for a TLD ) and I have the DNS set to ns2.astahost.com. I am a little confused by what spacewaste said. If what spacewaste said was true, wouldn't there be THOUSANDS of Xisto.com name servers? And also, if you do a whois lookup on Xisto.com, it's name servers are also pointed to ns1.astahost.com and ns2.astahost.com. If you have to wait about 24 hours for the DNS to update for a domain, how could Xisto.com ever get updated??? All I can say is that I get everything else on web hosting. It is just the name server part that gets me lost! -
Here is one thing that has confused me since I got my own domain. What is DNS and how does it work? I know that DNS takes text (mydomain.com) and sets it up with an IP address. Well, one account that I pay for is on a shared server. When I bought my hosting, I was given two Name Server URLs, NS5.Myhost.com and NS6.Myhost.com. All I had to do was log into GoDaddy and put those name server listings into my domain settings and wait 24-48 hours (cjb.net takes about 15-30 minutes). Here's what confuses me. On the server, my account is home/myaccount/public_html/ how exactly does my domain know to point to that path and not someone elses??? While I was waiting for my domain to update, I was given a temporary address of http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Then when my domain worked, all the files were still there, just accessable from my domain! Shared hosting is the biggest thing that confuses me. Like Xisto is shared hosting (right?). We're all squeesed together on a server and a community (so to speak). So how does Apache know that the website I have hosted here is in home/myaccount/public_html/? I have installed Apache on my Windows machine, and all I know is that I can set the server root to be in C:\WWW if I wanted it to. So how does Apache know that there are lots of directories to look in? Man! The webhosting business is complicated stuff! [N]F

At the hotels I've stayed at, turn on your wireless and you're on. No WEP Key or the such. I like the hotels that provide you an ethernet cable to connect as that is more secure. Just keep you're firewall on and prey!!!! But just look for hotels that have ethernet ports and privide you a cable (or you have to sign one out) Don't log into any websites that aren't secure when you're going to trasfer personal data like credit card numbers and such. But then again, the hotel owns the network and are providing you the service for free. Don't do anything stupid on their network and you'll be good. After all, like hazeshow said, nothing is stopping the employees from checking your activites. It's like at school or work. Hoteles normally shouldn't do this unless you're doing something illegal or something along that path. Don't do anything dumb on their network and the staff won't be after you. So, don't transmit any personal data, try to use ethernet cable, and don't leave your laptop in plain sight ready for the taking! Have a great trip! [N]F

Hmm... I can't really help you there. My school uses Novell Netware and students can't change their own passwords either. Except I was able to access mine by going to the network drive K:\ and some folder with a program from Novell. On some of the computers that aren't locked down fully (this is a high school, btw) you can map network drives that you shouldn't have access to and you can disconnect network drives. But because most of the newer computers are protected with Deep Freeze, a simple re-boot keeps them set the same.So what you are saying is that there is no full time Network Administrator? See, at my school, here is how network accounts are set up:K:\|Users|-Staff | Staff accounts - full access to network drives and features|-GRADUATION YEAR|--Student accounts - limited permissions (network drives)But some accounts that are just guest accounts are placed in the staff folder with limited default permissions. If you could find out who the main Network Administrator is (or if there's not one person, maybe the "head" of Network Administrations) you can point me to them and you can forward some information. I am not sure if what I said answered anything, but maybe it helped a little.I'm 15 and already a home network admin and I work on my school's network too so I'd be more than happy to help! [N]F

It's coming up on 2 years since I learned HTML (and now I am already working on advanced languages like PHP! lol)I was asked to work on this Geocities hosted web page and I was new to the whole web page thing. I opened up the index.html page in the Geocities editor and saw it was HTML, I quickly ran and grabbed my HTML book (still have it somewhere) and started seeing what each tag was.I then started my own site in Tripod (designed it in MS Word and coded it through Tripod). Bravenet.com was my favorite site when I first began! So many cool tools to add.Well, I am still learning new tricks in HTML that I never knew. My mom was taking this one Information Technology course at the college she works for and bought this better HTML book. It has so many cool functions in it that I wish I could have learned two years ago.Gotta love when you begin coding. Best moment in your life to finally see your webpage live.[N]F

lol Two words... WEP Key! You want to know how I went about seeing how secure my wireless is? I took my laptop and went outside. Just kept walking until my laptop had no signal. Then I went back into range and walked in another direction and another. I found every point where the network is blacked out. I figured that my neighbors live far enough away that securing it was really pointless. But just incase (because I have important data) WEP key is enabled, although I wish my router had better encryption! Anyway, soon I will be expanding my network to possibly one server and as soon as I can get out to CompUSA or someother store, I'll get my printer on it (currently requests have to come through my laptop ) [N]F

OMG... MS is really trying to get back in the game!IE7 was supposed to come out with Microsoft Longhorn, but Longhorn is taking to long already (I smell another Windows ME) and they want to get it out ASAP (Just like WINME, look how popular THAT was). So Microsoft decided to make it available for Windows XP SP2 users. No Windows XP? No SP2? No IE7.It is a very dumb concept, but soon people will learn to stop paying Gates for junk and move to something real like Linux.Firefox will ALWAYS be more secure and better than IE. TONS of people use Firefox but there's no malware for it... could that also be if everyone moves to Linux? What's the fun in writing a virus for Linux? The entire OS is already opensource so there's no point. And would they be dumb and make the virus open source too? lolOk, back on topic. IE7 should be out sometime around August-October-ish. Maybe sooner. But I don't expect anyone to actually use it. Firefox will always be on top![N]F

Wow... where was this back when I used PHP-Nuke a long time ago? lolThis would have been sweet! I wish I still used nuke. Does it work with IPB 1.3? I think if I look far in my backups, I'll find IPB 1.3 back when it was still free.[N]F

Here is an interesting question: What's on your LAN? Mine has: 3 Laptops 1 Tower (currently awaiting new hardware so it really isn't on the LAN) 1 Printer 1 External USB Hard disk 1 Windows 95 computer acting as a storage server Yes, that last item really does say Windows 95, lol. I get old computers from my school (well I have to bid on them) really cheap and I have nothing to do with them so why not use them as a network storage server! I have 5 more in my basement waiting to get configured for my network. So let's hear what you have on your LAN....

I put all my trust into Google's Gmail. Their ad technology is the same that they use on websites in the Google Adsense program. It simply looks for keywords (such as "music") and displays ads for those keywords, just like it does with the websites.Google says no one will read your email and I trust them. I have talked to people who work at Google and they hire really nice employees. Nothing is wrong with Gmail.I put my full trust into Google because why would they be reading OUR emails? They know that emails are private and will keep them that way. The thing you just have to be worried about is reading email at work or in a public place. Some places install software that sends screen shots over the network to the admin's computer (my school does this). That's what you need to be worried about... not some ad server.I'll continue to use Gmail no matter what. Just because Google is more advanced then Yahoo! or Hotmail, I know they would NOT invade a person's privacy without permission or unless the FBI contacts them about an account. THEN they'll open your account to the FBI....[N]F

Online Dating Sites Do you use them?
nightfox1405241487 replied to rhodesian.dragon's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I don't and will NEVER use an online dating service and can't understand why anyone would. First off, you have NO CLUE who could be at the other end... some 60+ woman pretending to be a hot 21 year old?Anyway, I would never use one of these services because there is no proof who that person says they are. How hard is it to find pictures of people on Google? Not very. No matter how many pictures they post, I do not know if that's them or not.Such as I could Google up some pictures of a hot 21 year old and pretend that I am a 21 year old female. Of course I'd NEVER do anything gross like that, but there are some people who do.So if you're going to use an online dating service, use severe caution and don't give out too much personal information![N]F -
Anyone here ever use Xandros? I will be switching to it once I get my new PC hardware after my motherboard died officially, lol.I have picked Xandros as my Linux choice because it has some Windows support built into it. I read about Xandros in a magazine and it said that Xandros was great for those who want to use Linux without leaving some Windows features behind. My friend downloaded some version of it installed it and gave me a copy of it to use. He says that it feels like Windows, but it has some Linux feel too. As you can tell, my friend and I have been experamenting with Linux on and off. I have played around with a SuSE Linux distro I got at a Novell/IBM session and didn't like it because, well, 1) Linux seems to be a new world, 2) .EXE files don't run in Linux unless you have something like Wine installed, 3) it was just to tricky! But as far as I can tell, I know I'll like Xandros because even my friend likes it and I have seen screen shots of Xandros as well and it does seem to be a cross of Linux and Windows.<--- Everything on this side of the task bar looks like Windows---> Everything on this side of the task bar looks like LinuxAlso, the desktop looks like Windows too, but instead of My Computer, there's My Linux. And (I should remember this from my Linux session last summer) is the home directory like My Documents in Windows? And if you or you know someone who uses Xandros can give me some advice on it, that would be great![N]F

I don't know if this is the exact proper place, but I'll just put it here because it deals with the web! I know this may sound stupid, but how does a DNS server work? Like big huge companies like Microsoft I know has to use one to spread the website out over different servers. Like if you type in https://www.microsoft.com/de-de, your request goes through a DNS server and it directs you to the proper server, right? But now lets say I send an email to Bill. That email has to go through the DNS server to get to the mail server. I just don't get how this is done. I have done a google search for "DNS Server" and find some server packages and read the information on the site to try and understand the server. If I wanted to launch a mail server, FTP server, and web server, I could do it, but they'd be all on the same machine which can put a ton of stress on the machine. So exactly how does the DNS server know what to do? Such as the page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us could be on a different server than the one that hosts https://www.microsoft.com/de-de. How does the DNS server know which web server to point to? Thanks if you can help me understand this! [N]F

Longhorn Price Microsofts outragous idea
nightfox1405241487 replied to IcedMetal's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yet another thing wrong with Microsoft.... Gates cares about NOTHING except money and will do anything to make more of it. If Microsoft does do this to Office and Windows Longhorn, I'll downgrade my self to WIN2K and Office 2000/2003 or just switch to Linux. This is just stupid... if they do that, I am sure EVERYONE will just keep their current Windows OS or will current Windows versions also be affected allong with Office? So if I am understanding this correctly, you will have to purchase a user license for $200 AND PAY A YEARLY FEE? And also, do we know how much this fee will be? If it is $20 or more, I'll just walk away from Windows. I seriously will. I'll purchase a Linux laptop and a Linux PC and I'll be set with Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice.org. I hope Microsoft realizes that this will be a big mistake and push people away from their software, even though it is already disliked and people continue to use it. And if we're going to have to PAY to use it, it better be as stable as Linux! I just have to post this quote from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us . [N]F -
After finally getting out of the red zone, I go to access my site and this is what I see: I even tried a subdomain I set up, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and I get the same thing! Anyone else having the same problem or know why? Thanks [N]F

Stubborn Laptop Cant see computers on network
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Computer Networks
Ummm.... did you read my post above yours? For some reason, the wireless is all screwed up and not finding my network correctly but when I plug in the ethernet cat 5 cable, it works!Any reason why?[N]F -
Actually, I have an advanced-alpha build and I had it on an old computer. Pentium 3 @ 700 MHz and I think 125 MB of RAM. It worked fine... until I used a bug fix to create a new folder... once I fixed that bug, Longhorn crashed on me. I CANNOT WAIT for it to be releaced! I have to agree with you. It is beautiful by its advanced graphics! I put a screenshot of "My Computer" and the start menu in a Word document right before it crashed... that's all I have left! *sniffs* [N]F

Don't know if this has been posted yet (quickly scanned through the posts) but I heard that the Internet 2 is going to have a MAJOR upgrade with IP addresses. I read in a magazine that we are currently running out of IP's on this Internet. With the Internet 2, however, there would be enough addresses so that if you got a new one for every second and you were connected your whole life, you still wouldn't run out.I think that is a scary thought.... it might be why AOL re-uses IPs or gives you and a few million users the same IP address.Oh well... just correct me if I'm wrong on this.[N]F

Stubborn Laptop Cant see computers on network
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Computer Networks
Ok... I just messed around with the laptop and I think the wireless settings aren't reconizing my network. All I did was take a LAN cable and plug it into my router (my router supports up to 4 non-wireless devices) and then it saw the network. I was then able to map Z: and now it works. Also, anyone know how I can change wireless settings for this one laptop? I can't have LAN cables running all over! lolThanks![N]F -
That's what it was! I was wondering why .com extension wasn't working! lol! It ended in .co.uk! [N]F

I feel your pain! I personally don't know the full reason behind the "Thumbs.db" file. When mass uploading my website, sometimes a thumbs file sneaks in (I select everything in my FTP client and then deselect the thumbs.db) and then I have to delete it. I think you can turn this off by going to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Do not cache thumbnails. Let me know if that works. If not, under that same tab, select "Show hidden files and folders" and just delete the Thumbs.db file. Could someone check to see if this works? Thanks! [N]F
