  1. Just the other day, my friend must have found this because he also sent me some test emails like that. But the surprising thing was, he tried it again a few minutes later and it didn't work! Shows you how fast Google is at fixing things! [N]F
  2. I'm up for a lerning experience, but currently just getting NVIDIA drivers installed on my linux box alone is enough of a challenge. I might do just that. After all, that's pretty much what it is... except instead of books, it's software CDs. [N]F
  3. ok, well, in a Debian mailing list, I was given instructions to get the kernel source... the way I did it, the NVIDIA installer still didn't see the source but I found another way.I'm now stuck at the Debian XServer configuration screen "Please enter the video card's bus identifier." ??? um... I have absolutely no idea what the heck that is! What will happen if I leave it blank?[N]F
  4. but aren't the viruses on Linux systems open source? lol. And, would the viruses have to be downloaded on ROOT account? Plus, they would have to be easy to remove unlike Windows viruses which attack vital system files & the registry. [N]F
  5. Even most paid hosts don't allow these unless you purchase a dedicated server due to the amount of load they put on the CPU. It is very rare that a host will allow these. I hope m^e helps you out. He's very generous! [N]F
  6. *cough*payoff*cough* lol I've YET to see a Dell PC come off the assembly line with an AMD CPU installed in it, same with an HP, Gateway, and NEC back in the day. If Intel was to pay you to support them over the competition, heck I'd take the offer! So why can't other companies other than OEMs get benefits of Intel payoffs? I DON'T support this kind of business since it is VERY wrong, but if a few million bucks is sitting on the table, I'd take it just like anyone else. [N]F
  7. lol, geeze, thanks I'm going to need it! I'll do some asking and searching around on debian.org.... they SHOULD know where the kernel sources are. If anyone else knows, please feel free to share! 800x600 is really bugging me and I can't take it anymore! [N]F Edit: Ok, I can't find anything on debian.org. However, through a bunch of clicking, I was directed to the site "https://www.kernel.org/; which is the kernel archives. Would searching for the proper version of the kernel here work? Edit2: btw, I forgot something. My release, 3.1, was released on December 20, 2005. Since then, I've noticed several new kernels. I'm really confused if I should use a newer kernel or get one from around Dec. 20? Edit3: (I promise to stop editing! ) I found this: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and was wondering if this is the correct way. If so, could someone translate that to English for a person new to Linux? Thanks!
  8. OK, let me try to sum this up:I need help with a MySQL database that stores the following information: Software Title, # of copies of Title, and people to whom the software title is lended to.Now, the admin backend doesn't need to be password protected as the entire system is going to be installed on a Novell NetWare server so permissions will be set. The backend needs to be able to add a title and number available (I know how to do this) and to "sign out" software out (I don't know how to do this)Example: I load the "software library" page which displays all the software in the database. Then in the admin backend, I want to lend out 2/5 copies of Windows XP so I add two names of people who signed out the disks. The "software library" page then needs to change the qty. for Windows XP from 5 to 3. Then when I get the disks back, I delete the people who signed out copies and then the qty. changes back to 5. I also need to be able to add and remove software titles from the admin backend.I don't know if this helps, but I think I can figure it all out. What I really need help with is DELETING a row from a database table.OK, I just got a new idea while typing this. Each software title will get a "profile" page in the admin backend. Now I would like to have a button that will DELETE the entry from the database. How would I do this? Thanks![N]F
  9. Ok, this is my new post since change of topic! :oOk, I found out how to kill X server and that is good! Now, I need to figure out how to get the kernel source (?) to compile my NVIDIA drivers so I can start using linux out of 800x600 resoultion which is really bothering! If I could have some assistance please for getting the sources? My Debian version is the latest, 3.1. Thanks!![N]F
  10. umm.... huh? When I logged in via terminal (I skipped the graphics) and I login as root and run the command (sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run), I get the following error message: ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the chapter "Intalling the NVIDIA Driver" in the README available on the Linux driver download page at http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html. Well, I checked out some docs provided by NVIDIA and Debian. Supposdly, I can change the runtime with "init #" but no matter what, it appears X is running on each runtime level! How do I stop it? 800x600 is really starting to get to me Thanks! [N]F EDIT: nvr mind... see my new post about the kernel
  11. Ok, I decided to go with Debian because I've always wanted to try it. I'm using the latest version and I just need to get the drivers installed. I've searched and searched, but I can't figure out how to login as root and execute commands in the terminal as root. I USED to know, like a really long time ago, but I can no longer find my old documents that I had printed out with the command.Perhaps one of our kind Linux users would like to assist a noob to Linux? I'm glad to be in the whole Linux world now. Time to finally start migrating away from Windows, spyware and viruses! But first, I need the drivers installed! Thanks!![N]F
  12. I've been lucky to be the one to build my school's Intranet and want to make it as dynamic as possible, but not too dynamic as the server needs to also process a million other tasks as well (it is being hosted on my school's Novell NetWare server to easily control access). The technology department usually loans out school copies of software directly out of the software library. The problem is, no one knows EXACTLY how many copies of Windows XP, Photoshop, Office, etc. there are and the list of staff who signed out copies is currently taped to the wall and is a mess.I could easily figure out a way to store ONE entry, but because there are multiple copies, that won't work. There needs to be an admin backend to not only add and edit, but to remove as well. I've done adding rows and editing, but I've never done removing entries. Thanks for any help! [N]F
  13. THANKS!! This really helps! I should have guessed "SPARC" Thanks again!! [N]F
  14. I like to switch over to Gentoo linux, but I downloaded Gentoo 2006.0 Universal install CD PPC 32 bit. I burned the CD and it didn't work! What the heck is all of this "alpha" "amd64" "hppa" etc?? What version would work on a Pentium 3? I've already wasted a CD-R on PPC 32 bit to find out it doesn't boot.Which version do I want? Thanks for any help! Linux sure is very confusing when it comes to downloading the proper version![N]F
  15. That's what I use. It is great because I keep a copy at school on my network account so I can get into my Gmail Drive. I can upload anything and download it at home and viseversa. It works really great! [N]F
  16. That's due to some antitrust actions in EUROPE ONLY. Else, I think WMP is going to be included in the other versions. If only Microsoft would quit trying to take over the planet, things like this wouldn't have to happen. Vista requires too many system resources so just to run it, you need to have like a 3 GHz CPU, 1 gig RAM and like the best graphics card available. lol, ok, maybe that's a little too high, but todays hardware WILL struggle with it. I'm quite happy on my Windows XP Tablet, Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Home, and Windows XP Media Center PCs! They won't be getting Vista because they won't have enough resourses to do so. [N]F
  17. How can I have my Linksys open more than one port 80? I have one Apache server running on a computer with two NIC cards. I also have a ColdFusion development server running on port 8500 and uses a different internal IP. Whenever I try to open port 80 for another IP, I get a "Port overlap" message. Is there a way to wildcard requests for all IPs?Thanks![N]F
  18. Yeah, it is just like Linux. Linux distros can be quite huge. DVD versions can be maybe 2 gigs or 6 CDs of 500 MB or larger per CD. If you have a slower connection, you'd really want to buy it versus waiting forever for it to download. Mostly, paying is only for CD buring, labour and shipping costs. Not the actual software unless you can get CDs for free and label them for free. [N]F
  19. I agree! And to to make things worse, they "call home" and don't report the facts!! Just a few weeks ago, in my school district's middle school, a bomb threat was made. Following procedure, the building was evacuated into the high school. Some smart jack--- kid gets the bright idea to call mom that the middle school is going to blow up and I guess some other kids did the same... when news leaked to us high schoolers, we heard two things: 1) Some loony kid brought a gun to school, 2) There was a bomb. So some smart high schoolers also decide to call home... the offices were swammped with phone calls! When I go to bed at night, the off button gets pressed and it gets plugged into my charger. Then the next day when I wake up, I take it out (LEAVING IT OFF) and slip it into my pocket for another good day at school. Then at 2:20 PM, as school is over, I turn it on. If you want to call me duing school hours fine. You'll just get directed to voicemail which I'll check. I only have a cell phone for two reasons: 1) It's for business. Clients can easily reach me with no problem. 2) I'm starting to drive. So if I get in an accident, I can easily call for help. But why does a 5th grader need one? I highly doubt a 5th grader drives, which rules out that excuse, and I highly doubt a 5th grader has important business and clients to tend to. It's simple: parents are spoiling their kids. When I'm older and have kids, they're going to be brought up just as how I was. Since I run a technology business, they might get a computer to learn on but they're not getting a cell phone until they're getting their temps or have a job that requires one. Working at McDonald's DOESN'T require a cell phone. Computer repair and servicing DOES. I think I've ranted enough... Don't even get me started on iPods.... [N]F
  20. I found this while checking out Business 2.0's 101 dumb moments in business list and decided I should post here and share! It appears Microsoft is a bad secret keeper. No really! Today, they seemed to have prematurely posted lots of good information about the operating system. Apparently Microsoft is making six primary editions and two special ones for Europe without Windows Media Player to comply with some antitrust settlements. Hahaha!! Go Microsoft. I have my own small technology business that I run and sure, I want to give my clients the best support possible but I don't post information like that! At least, not online! (Source: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) [N]F
  21. Most free hosts (excluding Xisto) care only about making lots of $$$ off of their customers. But even then, my first major website was hosted with Yahoo! GeoCities. I was paying $8.95 a month and I didn't get PHP or MySQL, CGI, Perl or any "good stuff". I'm on another paying host which I only pay $8.85 a month and I get more disk space, bandwidth, and all the goodies Yahoo didn't offer me, for less! This is why it is very important to shop around first. [N]F
  22. I agree. MS can obviously leave security holes THEN patch it?? Why didn't you patch the hole then if you knew about it?? Firefox is already the most popular browser and I don't see any security holes in it... hmm... Linux, one of the most widely used SERVER operating systems... I don't see servers dropping! Apache... most widely used server. Yet there are not as nearly as many security holes in Apache as IIS (even people who have been Microsoft programmers say IIS is worthless junk). PHPNuke CMS software & phpBB... both I don't use and both filled with security holes. It is like every few weeks or so phpBB releases a new version to "fix" the previous... remember the phpBB 2.10 worm? Yeah. Not because phpBB is popular, but because someone found a way to take advantage of a security hole! It is simply which has more security holes. [N]F
  23. At school, in English class, we've been using Macs... I hate it. Those stupid minis are horrible!!!We've been recording stuff on "GarageBand" and Windows or even Linux is way better... how our teacher can stand those bloody blue macs of death, I don't know. I hate them... oh, why do you have to EJECT the CD from the keyboard??? Lucky us PC users... we can swap our keyboards all we want.Macs suck.[N]F
  24. Thanks m^e! I'm not sure where it may be coming from. I think of all the computers are currently off except for mine (both).Just to be cirtian, I'll check. Also, it has been holding strong. It's been on for about 30 minutes now without that message. Does the worm also disable Administrator account access? I've got a Sophos Anti-Virus on loan from my school but I have to get in Administrator but Windows wouldn't let me in. A message box popped up saying some internal error occured. Thanks![N]F
  25. On my other computer, I've been having some strange problem recently. After X minutes or so, lsass.exe gets terminated on its own and the computer reboots. I've formatted the drive and have re-installed Windows XP... 3 times now and the same thing keeps happening BUT I think it might be the NVIDIA graphics driver since I don't have the problem until I install the driver, which I highly doubt is doing this.I've run spyware scans and virus scans... nothing. My Windows XP disk is perfectly fine. I've used it on previous installs without problems. I'm almost tempted to install Windows 98 on it since it never crashed. Thanks for any ideas![N]F
