  1. Thanks, m^e! So when do you get trusted with the root password to the servers? lol! Go m^e!
  2. I personally only use Verdana because it is widely used and I love how it looks on LCD monitors. I'll sometimes use Tahoma but there isn't a Tahoma on Linux so I leave that for my Windows laptop. But, if all else fails, there's Times (New Roman) as it is supported by every OS in the world.I must agree with organicbmx... Comic Sans should burn... Arial I used to like, but I don't have a taste for it anymore and I wish Google would change to Verdana or at least Tahoma!![N]F
  3. Hello, I need a script to run but I can't get it because the server doesn't have the PHP Iconv module installed. Could this module be installed for me? I'm located on Gamma. The quicker this can be done, the better, though there isn't much of a rush. I'd just appreciate it if and when it got done! No rush though. Thanks![N]F
  4. If you are getting an access denied message, try the following:Use your SSH client and attempt to login using your account on the server. If that doesn't work, it is quite possible that SSH may have been accidently revolked. But I'm not an administrator so I can't tell you.[N]F
  5. Hosting a site at home has its ups and downs. Ups: -You're the only one on the server and so you can use as much disk space as you want -You have full control over the server and can install exactly what you need (if you know what you need that is ) Downs: -DSL lines have great download speeds but upload is terrible. My download speed is roughly 2 Mbps but uploads just hit 34Kbps which means if you have a 10 MB file for download on your home-hosted site, it can only upload to clients at a rate of 34Kbps, regardless of their download speed. For me, I normally download at 320Kbps. My download rate would take over your connection if you had files for download. -Cable lines flux in speed too much. If your greedy file sharing neighbor is pirating Windows Vista, Windows XP and downloading other huge files, there goes your bandwidth... -You must be tech savvy! You have to know how to operate the server (or use Windows XP and IIS... anyone with 1/2 a brain cell can run IIS, but it opens more security holes) and keep it safe. You also have to keep it fully functioning 24/7/365 to the best of your ability. Assuming you don't have an instant automatic stand-by generator, what will you do when the power goes out? -You have to take technical control of the machine and OS... you need to keep it patched, upgrade hardware, etc. -You have to keep your network secure and operational. As you can see, there are more drawbacks than positives so you might as well pay or let Xisto host your site for free. Unless you are willing to learn, that is. [N]F
  6. I read something about this on Digg a while ago. It seems quite interesting. The first thing that popped into my head was: "OMG! YES! I can FINALLY get lazy and not have to type anymore!"It seems pretty interesting, not that I would use it much, but hey, it is new technology in the search world![N]F
  7. I'm making a script that emails data and in the message box, I need all <enter> to be converted to \n so when it is mailed, it will format properly into:Thisis atestWhen submitted, it would be turned into:This \n is \n a \n testSo that it can easily be mailed. Or does PHP do this automatically? Thanks![N]F
  8. This is YET another great reason to run Linux. All Microsuck sees out of EVERYTHING is $$$$... darn it, isn't William rich ENOUGH?? Well, personally, MS should have coded the previous versions correctly instead of releasing Windows with 200,000,000,000,000 security holes and another 200,000,000,000,000,000 bugs.Of course, I can't exactly complain because I could never code an operating system. That's why there's alternatives such as Linux! As far as I'm concered, you can still be running Red Hat 2 and Red Hat is still going to support you. I like laughing at MS because of the rate they "discontinue support" for their customers.. It's amazing how many complaints there are about Windows yet NO ONE does ANYTHING about it except continue to support MS...[N]F
  9. I'm going to post some more of my comments later as I've got to go... read the full article here: http://www.informationweek.com/archives.asp?newsandcommentary=yes= [N]F
  10. lol, I suppose that works too. Thanks! Also, would you know if the current version of WINE is Dreamweaver friendly? I know some of the older versions were. [N]F
  11. It "spits out" absolutely nothing under my general user account.. the hourglass will appear and wait about 20 seconds and then it's gone... Wine nowhere in sight. However, if I login as root, it runs the application in no time. The hour glass appears for like 1 second and then *poof!* it's gone and the program is running smoothly.[N]FEdit: Also, the only difference between my account and root is that I use KDE and root uses GNOME. I'm not sure if this would make a difference.Edit2: I just created another account... Wine works perfectly on it too. I guess I'm going to back-up and then move to a new system account... good thing I didn't spend too much time "moving in", lol
  12. Umm, I'm confused. You seem to be doing a lot of double talk here... (see below for my comments) C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll -> uncompile that sucker and there you go... the crappy Windows Kernel. If you want to know, from what I've read and all, the Windows kernel fails in performance. I have seen countless number of reports that compair Windows to Linux. As I use Windows and Linux side-by-side (at least until my WINE problem is solved), I notice a performance factor too. Firefox is known for its little "memory leak" thing. On my Windows box, I can easly get my page file OVER 1 GIGABYTE just by running (and ONLY running) Firefox, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Photoshop. Here's something strange too... when I kill Photoshop and Dreamweaver, I *might* be able to get the page file down to exactly 1 gig or 1.02 gigs. As soon as I kill Firefox, it drops to 300 MB. Even under stress, my Linux box will reboot faster than my Windows box.. it also boots up faster too. XP takes 14 bars, and 3 minutes to load my desktop after login. On Linux, after all the services start up, loging in to KDE is instant. Even on a new Windows machine, it still takes a while. I don't have the time to write a report on the subject, but search it and you'll find it. Also, the whole "system reboot" thing makes no sense... Novell did a study actually, compairing SuSE Enterprise Server (10 I think) to Windows Server 2003. Network admins had a huge complaint of excessive & unplanned network downtime when installing patches. I did my own "case study" at school... of course, I pulled numbers from the air and what MS had on their website. In my "report", I stated that with NEW servers (not junky $500 ones either), this alone would cost $300,000 ($15000 per server... these are EXCELLENT servers). Now throw on Windows... $335,780. Linux pulled off with: $302,400. My Windows friend thinks my article is complete BS, though he's NEVER used Linux. You can find Novell's report here: https://www.suse.com/ How is MS not bad? All they do is treat their customers like cattle... They look at the customers and all they see is $$$ and not people. This is WHY I switched to Linux. I like having control of MY system... here's what I told my friends: "I'm sick of it... the viruses, the malware, that stupid ugly multi-colored windoze logo... everything. I want flexibility, not hassles. I want FREEDOM, NOT RESTRICTIONS." I'm only talking from experience. I've had to re-install Windows, 2 times in less than a year on my Windows box... first time, Windows just "quit" and a BSOD poped up and I had to format and re-install. The second time was due to an anti-virus error. Now, I've had more Windows machines, all of them I've had to re-install Windows on at LEAST 2 times. I don't want to do that. Another reason I'm migrating over to Linux is MS and their BS about everything... "you must validate Windows to get updates"... I wouldn't be surprised if MS wrote half the viruses themselves!!! They obviously hate pirates AND *nix users too. (Somewhere on here is a post about MS detecting the use of WINE on a user's system... if WINE present, then no updates for you. I can't like a company if all they see their customers as is $$$ (hence why I also hate AOL, not just for being AOL...) [N]F
  13. I'm having some problems with WINE.WINE won't work under my regular user account but it works fine under root. Is there an "easy way" to get it working again under my account or will I have to back-up the files I have in my home folder and delete then re-create my account?I don't mind doing this as I only have like 3 files total. Thanks![N]F
  14. SELinux is disabled I know what kind of problems it can cause!Ok, after following some instructions in httpd.conf, ~userid should have permissions of 711 and ~userid/public_html should have permissions of 755.I got it to display web documents now, which is good. Directory listing still shows "403 Forbidden" which has its advantages and disadvantages.I've looked through httpd.conf but I don't see anything about directory listings..[N]F
  15. I'm having some file permission problems. Whenever I try to access my home directory via the Internet I get a 403 Forbidden message. Except something on this message has caught my eye: I'm not sure what that means other than there's a file permission problem SOMEWHERE.. Just incase this helps, here's what it is set: The /home/blah/public_html folder owner is blah and group blah. I've even changed it over to apache for both. I've even got the folder CHMODed to 777, still "Forbidden". What am I doing wrong here? I encountered this last summer but I forget what kind of "tinkering" was done to get it working correctly.. Thanks! [N]F
  16. Xisto has Fantastico installed with Viper. You could apply for hosting and then install it via CPanel. [N]F
  17. I hate to admit it, but upon close review, I screwed up the IP address! That's why it wasn't working...My old network used the scheme of 192.168.0.XXX and my new network uses the scheme 192.168.1.XXX. This isn't the first time. I've been known to put in my school's IP scheme at home too (10.35.XXX.XXX). It's amazing how one digit can change so much! lol.My next task is getting user directorys to NOT cause a 403: Forbidden message.Don't worry, m^e. I'll try to help you out with your FTP problem too. [N]F
  18. On a spare hard drive, I installed CentOS 4.3 Final and I've got some sucess! It actually logged me into my home directory! More shocking, I've gotten farther than what I got when I used the "server" option during install... check out this FTP Session: I was (shockingly) able to write to the disk! I'm going to unplug the current drive and switch it over to the one running Fedora... I think I'm making some progress! [N]F
  19. haha... I've got BOTH my parents on Firefox! Even though that ugly blue "E" is so tempting to click on, they hit the Fox instead! I've got them well trained! lol But this goes to show you... Firefox is a better browser! [N]F
  20. Windows is already incomplete. That's why I'm sticking to Windows XP and Linux. I don't want 72 million versions of one OS. I want ONE! I also don't want to pay $200 for basically "buggy" software. Again, another reason why I'm migrating over to Linux as much as possible. Another thing about Vista that is a load of garbage is the security. It wants PERMISSION to DELETE a file!!! I don't know why Microsoft just doesn't "copy" the Linux structure and split it up like this: Administrator -> FULL computer usage; can do anything Regular User -> Can't access all the important stuff; can't modify system files Boom, there ya go. Windows = Virus free or less. Also, Vista is demanding. You need like a $3,000 comp just to run EVERYTHING correctly. I don't know about you guys, but I DON'T want to buy a new computer just so I can run another piece of software. It makes no sense to me. [N]F
  21. Yeah, that's why their service is going down the drain. Give them a year and most members will be gone for sure. I've got an active website on there I need to move off soon. They are just a bunch of liars... I think ANYONE could run a free web hosting service better then they can![N]F
  22. I've checked it over and over... However, I made a discovery. I have my server hooked up on a domain, so when I visited xerge.dynamic10.com, I was prompted for a login. So I entered my local system details and it let me in!! I'm going to test something out with SuSE Enterprise Server 9. It's a good thing I've got spare hard disks!! [N]F
  23. Hey, m^e! I found this guide on https://www.howtoforge.com/ called the "Perfect Setup - Fedora Core 5 (64 bit)" but it can work with the 32 bit also. Following the guide, they suggest turning SELinux off because it causes more problems than good so I have it disabled. Tonight, I was out at a book store, I found a Fedora Core 4 book and it had a whole chapter on FTP. The book was $50 (probably because it came with a "special" FC4 edition). I only currently have $15 so I couldn't buy it. You sorta got it easier, m^e. At least you can get in.. I can't. I would like to try a different FTP server, but I'm not sure if there are any good ones that can be installed by running a "yum" command. I'm going to take a shower and then I think I'll search Amazon and find a used book cheap. I don't get why all the Fedora/Red Hat books have to be so... BIG and expensive. Every Fedora/Red Hat book the store had was like 1000 pages and $50-$60. Someone needs to make a book about how to setup a web server. I'm almost ready to contact The Planet or RackSpace and see if they'd be willing to share how to do it. If I find anything, I'll let you know, m^e. [N]F
  24. I'm not sure what is going on! I've got the firewall disabled and I can't even get connected! Here's what goes on: I even uninstalled VSFTPD and re-installed it with no luck. I've even tried switching vsftpd.conf files and still nothing! Thanks for any assistance. I've never had this sort of problem with VSFTPD before. [N]F
  25. That's another possiblity, except I also have SuSE Enterprise Server 9 RC5 that I borrowed & copied from a tech at school. It does the EXACT same thing except the first initial login causes problems. This is strange because I've installed that version on a Pentium II about 500-600 MHz 512 MB RAM and it worked fine.Do you know of any software that will run in Windows to check the checksums?[N]F
