Just one solution: OpenOffice (like everyone else has said...)It's EXACTLY like MS Office, just minus all the bogus licensing, GUI features, and buggyness (if that is a word). However, my mom got me MS Office 2003 for only $15 because the college she used to work for had this contract with Microsoft and the software was really cheap... so that's the only reason why I use it, else I'd use OpenOffice.[N]F

They upgraded, but they just didn't go into WHM (the admin end of CPanel) and convert everyone's account to the new themes. I'm on a host with the new themes and everything and it's freaking sweet!!! I love the little "percentage" bars that will visually show you how much of your quotas you've used. [N]F

A Man's Home Is His Castle

Some of those are pretty awesome... I really want a tree house like some of those.... maybe just a "vacation" home or something like that... but they look pretty awesome![N]F -
Yeah, this seems to be a way to get pirates to come and use the site and to "steal" the market away from rapidshare.[N]F

Hmm.... you can definately trust a provider if they FORCE you to register JUST to browse their forums! Seems like a shady business move to me. No web host with forums I know of ever completely made them hidden away where you had to register to even browse!! The catch is overselling. The wonderful idea of lets put as many accounts with all these really big quotas onto one server as we possibly can before it starts to slow down and lets hope that everyone doesn't use all their quota! Even if you live in the middle of no where, I'd still have some good security... just in case anyone decides to go war driving, it gives them quite a challenge and will probably leave you alone. [N]F

(A little off topic) It's still in the Networking section. The other topic is moved. (On Topic) Javascript just allows you to do cool things with a User's browser like menus, making things move, etc. To see what I mean, just visit http://www.javascriptkit.com/ or http://www.dynamicdrive.com/. But you need a "core" for the JavaScript to reside on. That would be where you need to learn HTML. HTML is really easy and you can probably pick it up within a week. [N]F

How To Obtain A Routable Ip Address?
nightfox1405241487 replied to sunny152's topic in Computer Networks
You can't just give yourself a routable IP from a global IP space. If you could, there would be mass confusion between devices because you could easily "make up" an IP and end up causing a conflict. So that's why private networks are private and separate from public.[N]F -
Verizon Fios-have It?
nightfox1405241487 replied to TheOneAndOnly1405241546's topic in Computer Networks
I'm in a Windstream area and I wish this was available... download rates of over 100MBps... *drool* Anyways, Windstream has yet to release the 6 MBps DSL in my area, so I doubt they'll ever come out with Fiber access anytime soon. Well worth it if you host servers and like having a fast line![N]F -
How To Bypass Websense? other than using proxy...
nightfox1405241487 replied to Waleed Dar's topic in Computer Networks
To set this up visually:INTERNET - Your School's Filter - Your School's Network - YouThere's no actual way "around" the filter. You just have to tunnel through it. Again, like wutske said, you'd probably be breaking the rules. At my school if you get caught, the proxy gets blocked and you can do some serious time. Kids get after school and saturday detentions just for having games on the network server.[N]F -
Removing Information From Google Search Engine
nightfox1405241487 replied to Hillary1405241547's topic in Search Engines
Yeah, just also note you won't get any search engine traffic if you block bots from accessing your entire site. You won't get any traffic easily, you couldn't intergrate your own site search unless your site is database powered, and you'd have to advertise like mad if you wanted visitors. I don't like being googled as much as the next guy, but you have to deal with it. [N]F -
Novell Client For Windows 2000/xp
nightfox1405241487 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Software
Yes, I would like it! It's a pain not being able to connect to my server... the XP/2003 client installs fine, no errors, but when you initially try to select your tree, it takes forever and shows you an empty box. The "Workstation Only" login works, but other than that I can't get the XP/2003 client to even touch my Novell NetWare server. The file is under 20 MB right? Like 19.6? You can upload it to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and put it in the "Public File Dump" folder. Thanks! [N]F -
No, there is no harm in leaving your router on. And if you leave any computers on, the computers will actually "talk" to each other too during the night. B)Other than using up like a total of maybe 5watts every 5 hours (which is pretty energy efficient I must say), there is no harm done to anything by leaving it on. My router is a full fledged Linux box which runs on an old PC and that stays on 24/7/365. That uses more power than a Linksys or D-Link home router. My cousins also like to turn things off as well. But a router uses just a little more power than if you shut off your computer and turn off the monitor (trust me, that little orange LED on the monitor will NOT syrocket your next electric bill at all!!) just because it has to move data. I'd suggest leaving it on because it's one less thing you have to turn on if you're one of those people who insist on turning OFF EVERYTHING (printer, computer, monitor, modem, router). The only power suckers are printers BUT when they're printing and the actual computer system. Other than that, everything else barly uses any power.[N]F

Hi,Novell took down their downloads of the Novell Client for Windows 2000/XP and if you have ever read any of Novell's documentation, you would normally expect it to work on 2000 and XP ONLY. Well, since this client has been discontinued (evil Novell!!!), I had no choice but to install the XP/2003 client on my Win2k machine. Despite all odds, it actually worked!!! Edit: Except for the actual "logging in" part... anyone know where to find the Novell Client for 2000/XP since Novell discontinued it? Internet searches have showed NOTHING!!I guess any NT client will work on any NT OS except Vista... which Microsoft destroyed the "normal" login process removing pre-login authentication.[N]F

Vista Rocks
nightfox1405241487 replied to blackandwhiteentertainment's topic in Websites and Web Designing
It's a waste of money for the casual home user who does nothing but email, surf the web, download pictures, and other small things to get a high-end computer... they might as well just use Windows 98!! Vista has 10 gigs of embedded graphics and tons of visual stuff... you know why most of the useful stuff was cut out of Vista? So it could have the LOOKS. No functionality, not user friendly, complicated the lives of computer techs and the people who cause ID10T errors by a ton. I predicted another Windows ME 6 MONTHS before the release of Vista. If Vista is such a success, why is it that Dell got complaints and gave the option of XP or Vista on some computers? When XP came out, people complained about the activation feature, but no computer company started putting Windows 2000 back on. Vista is still in it's early stages. I wouldn't trust it. I'd wait until SP1 before I make it a full time OS for me. There are still unknown security holes in it. Even though it might claim to be the most secure (notice a pattern how each preceding Windows version has claimed it's the most secure and stable yet?), I'm sure it'll be just like Windows XP before SP1... swiss cheese. Also, Vista has so many problems that no one should have to deal with. I had it, and had incompatibility issues with 90% of my software, some drivers, and the resource hogging was rediculous! I mean, my laptop with 512 MB of RAM couldn't play DVDs using Windows Media Player because all the RAM was being used by the OS for what? The stupid GUI. [N]F -

May I suggest the book, PHP Cookbook? It's an O'Reilly book and I like it a lot. It's the best PHP book I've bought so far and you really can't go wrong with it! [N]F -
New Computer? Need opinions
nightfox1405241487 replied to xboxrulz1405241485's topic in Hardware Workshop
Remember that Vista eats up 57% of 1 GB RAM with nothing running! Be sure to calculate that in your plans since you are a Vista user. [N]F -
I actually use both... however, I prefer the clean and less "bulky" look of IE7 as Firefox has retained the classic Windows application look. IE7 also loads quicker on my other laptop as it is part of Windows. However, nothing beats Firefox's recovery. It's horrible when Windows crashes, Firefox crashes, or the power goes out and you were looking at some good sites and not being able to quickly open them back up or having to search your history for the exact page you were on. I really LOVE that feature!! The nice thing too, is that Firefox has amazing plugins while IE doesn't.[N]F

Vista Rocks
nightfox1405241487 replied to blackandwhiteentertainment's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yeah, I'm actually thinking about putting Server 2003 on my laptop... I did it before but I removed it and went back to XP a long time ago. It is a very secure OS. But 2000 is good in simple terms... And yeah, I agree... Linux or Mac anyday! [N]F -
Also, as I don't think this was pointed out in this topic, in the United States, it is illegal to "hack" a secured wireless network. Let me repeat that: In the United States, it is ILLEGAL to "hack" a secured wireless network. If you're caught and get sued, you deserve it. Also, no, there is no way to connect to a secure network without the network key. If there was, then it wouldn't be secure. That "password" is really an encryption key. When you tell your computer the encryption key, it can then decode the wireless packets. [N]F

Well, my professional opinion (I am studying this sort of career field) is that it is possible for an attacker to crack WEP and launch a packet sniffer on your network. WPA is more secure only as hard as you make the WPA key. If you make your key "network" or "timmy" or something easy like that, you might as well just use WEP. It's almost like making your bank PIN 1234... or your birthdate. If you do that, you're asking to have money stolen. A SECURE WPA key is something like "MyN371s5ecur3" => My Net Is Secure. See how easy it is?!? [N]F
