Well, Lancer, your latter point sounds more like Apple than Microsoft. At least Microsoft will announce they found a bug and is working on a solution. Apple won't even tell you until they fix it so you'll be running your operating system without actually knowing if there's a bug in the system.As for this DBus 1.2.6 fiasco, hopefully, they'll just repackage it with the correct configuration file. It's just a configuration oopsie and from a developer's perspective, it shouldn't be all too hard. What appalls me is the lack of testing before they discovered this little mistake especially since this is not a software bug but an actual human error. Well, the concept of UAC is just to elevate the user to have "administrator" rights to perform things that only administrators could do. Unfortunately for Windows users, unlike UNIX, Windows doesn't really have a real set boundary between "user" folders. Regular users can still write to anywhere on the disc as long as it's not the Program Files or WINDOWS folder. In UNIX, only the root can write to any folder except /home (or $HOME, depending on UNIX setup). Obviously, if the admin allows users to write to certain folders outside of their home directory, that is fine. The idea of UAC is basically like sudo, kdesu or gnomesu, where it allows temporary access to administrator tasks that allows the users to do anything they can as long as the sudo, kdesu or gnomesu is activated for that session. Pre-Windows Vista era, in order to install programs or do any administrative tasks, you had to run yourself as an administrator. This poses a large security risk since the average user doesn't want to be bothered by constantly reminding themselves to right-click and then select "Run As". Heck, most users don't even know that exists, so they just automatically make themselves administrator. This allows malware to easy infiltrate the computer. In order to lower the chances, all accounts are defaulted to become a regular user (like in UNIX) and require all administrator to press Continue to confirm all administrative tasks. Yes, it can get annoying since Microsoft loves to treat you as if you're actually dumb. That's why many users got fed up with UAC. This is supposed to be fixed for the next version of Windows, Windows 7. Windows 7 is suppose to allow you to control how many notifications you will receive (even the dumbest option to allow you to turn it off). I run my Windows Server 2008 installation as a regular user and I don't mind typing the administrator password to install or to perform administrative tasks because I'm so used to that with UNIX. It's a great practice, it just amazes me how long it took Microsoft finally woke up to this minor solution to the bigger problem. UAC saves computers, more Windows XP-users should realize that. At first I criticized it before I started realizing that it's just a more annoying version to what MacOS X, KDE and GNOME had for their respective systems. Also, as usual, Microsoft slanted that UAC vs. sudo comparison. Unlike their comparison, sudo usually REQUIRE users to type in their password and to answer their 100 users question, the easiest way is to assign those 100 users into a group and assign them to be able to access sudo and require the root password in order to commit root access. Here's a sample of my sudoers file on my home server: As you can see, instead of assigning people one by one, I can assign the whole pwrusers group, and must require them to enter their passwords to confirm their actions. I can't really say competition for software and operating systems. They basically own a monopoly with Windows and their Office software, so Microsoft is the anti-thesis to competition. Also, user-friendly-ness is relative. vi in Linux although looks and works archaic, it is quite simple after you learn and get the hang of it. A lot of things in Linux is easier than it is on Windows. Plus, Macs are more "user-friendly" in your sense than Windows will ever be.I think user-friendly-ness has now become ... how much less effort it takes a user to learn the software.xboxrulz

Do you mean that a 64-bit guest operating system access more than 3GB of RAM? Yes it can given that your host machine has at least 1GB more memory than what you specified. Your graphics card will NOT affect the address space on a 64-bit address space because the address space is too big for us to worry about right now. Maybe in the future, but not right now. If you're talking about an integrated graphics processor, then just dock 210MB of memory off your host operating system. Since the guest operating system is virtualized (it's not emulated since there's nothing to emulate), it will NOT care about your physical computer's graphics chip, it'll care about how much video memory you assign it through the virtualization manager. Also, in a virtualized environment, the guest operating system doesn't even know about your actual graphics chip. If I have VMWare, my guest operating system will think that I have a VMWare graphics chip, not my ATi/NVIDIA chip. This is because graphics chips are NOT virtualized at all. Only the CPU is, everything else is done by indirectly passing instructions from input devices. xboxrulz

In order to run 64-bit operating system, you MUST run it on a 64-bit machine. That means both the hardware and the host operating system MUST be in 64-bit mode. That means if your operating system is for example Windows XP Professional, you CANNOT RUN 64-bit operating systems in a virtual machine even if your processor is 64-bit capable because you're running the processor in legacy mode (16/32 bit). If you are running your virtual machine on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, then you CAN run a 64-bit operating system in a virtual machine. A 64-bit host operating system can run 32-bit guest operating system fine and without any penalties. So I'm not too sure what's your question... As for wanting to run 64-bit operating system, do you have the need for one? If you have large applications and have 4 or more GB of RAM to be used, then you should jump onto the 64-bit bandwagon, else, little performance will be seen. I run my system in full 64-bit environment because I have games that have 64-bit binary (esp. Crysis, it runs a lot better in 64-bit than 32-bit). Also, I want my programs to have a larger address space without being limited by my video card. xboxrulz

As long as you have drivers from your graphic card manufacturer, direct rendering on OpenGL has NOT been removed. I run Google Earth in OpenGL all the time and run some demos on Java that relies on OpenGL to render 3D graphics. xboxrulz

I completely forgot about that one ... it is very important to make sure that thermal grease was applied properly. Then again, if you didn't, you're running a HIGH risk of burning your CPU. However, try Darasen's approach too. xboxrulz

You need to install the ATI fglrx (Catalyst Drivers) for Linux on ATi's website.You also need an upgrade, your system looks like it needs an upgrade, especially in the graphics side. If you're planning to do some gaming (which this was posted in the gaming section before I moved it), you NEED at LEAST an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (or an overclocked 4200+ which I have, my 4200+ runs at 2.78 GHz =D) or better and an ATi Radeon HD 3650 or better.It can be the case that your parts are a mix of both old and new that may trigger problems with the system. Make sure that you're not running too many operating systems on your system, it may lead to the system choking for more disc space.Also, make sure that you're using ONE power supply at a time. Your system might be choking on the 350W, try to only use your 550W.xboxrulz

Actually, Windows XP brought much more than just cosmetic changes. It ushered in many security features not found in Windows 2000 like "Run As Administrator". Also, I think they introduced the Windows Compatibility Mode in Windows XP which wasn't available in Windows 2000, last check.I don't see any reason to run Windows 2000 unless you don't plan to use any new software that is only available in Windows XP (or works with it). A lot of games won't even run Windows 2000 like Battlefield 2142 so I was basically pushed to go Windows XP. Now I'm on Windows Server 2008 so I'm a little bit ahead of the game lol.
