  1. Do you have any proofs for that because the proof to counter that is that the X server (which is the graphics system on UNIX machine) has a fast frame buffer and renderer than Windows. Plus Windows will slow down when many services are running because Windows NT based editions such as Windows XP uses a microkernel that sends queries to the master kernel process to process the data, which will slow down the system when there is alot. In contrast, Linux uses a monolithic kernel which the whole kernel operates without child kernel processes asking it questions whenever it needs something, this boosts up speed. Have you run a game on Linux before? It doesn't slow down the system as much as Windows does. Windows will start dropping in speed dramatically when a high resource process than in Linux. (sorry if I'm repeating). If you use the right journaling filesystem, Linux doesn't even need you to defragment it. I use ReiserFS (although I could've used JFS) and it is alot faster than NTFS. ReiserFS also auto compresses your files when storing it to disc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, although UNIX was originally designed for serving, Linux was not. Linux was designed to be easy to some extent, it is a fun operating system to use. It was started as a hobby by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Linux is so powerful that it can act as a server, router, desktop, camera, cellphone, laptop system, army grade systems and etc. Linux is created so it goes anywhere. That's the beauty of it. Linux is as easy to learn as Windows. I learn Linux and its core components in 2 weeks. Windows it took me a month because there are less things to discover on that operating system and it is not fun to go around system files and tinker with the antivirus. Linux can be as multimedia or gamer friendly as Macintosh or Windows. Take SuSE Linux to account. It is designed for end-users. I use it because I find it easier than Windows to install and to configure. It is also less bloated. I have all the applications I want installed and the rest are on my 5 CD which I can install later if I want to. This is IMO and the sources for these information comes from: Linux for Dummies - 5th Edition Forums across the net Just For Fun: An Accidental Revolution (my favourite biography) and my personal experiences on the computer since 8. xboxrulz
  2. This question is easy: get a Mac, it is more user-friendly, less clogged, more stable and less evil operating system and machine than Windows which is not as user-friendly, clogged w/ spyware and bloatware (WinXP is spyware) and all that crap.xboxrulz
  3. Please note that Fedora wasn't fully tested, their kernels have experimental codes that other Linux distributors and the Fedora developers haven't 100%ly tested them. The X server was affected because of an experimental faulty, it caused it to slow down.Anyways, back to the topic, you should look around, I suggest you get Linux for Dummies. It teaches you to operate Linux as a novice in 2 weeks.xboxrulz
  4. su and sudo are almost the same command. sudo is temporary for 1 command. su is a temporary session. I recommend SuSE Linux 9.3 for starters but Kubuntu or Ubuntu is a great alternative.xboxrulz
  5. my opinion? Right here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ xboxrulz
  6. I have one that I maintain, but I only publish stuff if there is any viable stuff from the web. The URL: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ xboxrulz
  7. for other Linux app, just compile it normally. Just run ./configure on your sourcecode and it should compile as long as you have gcc.Mac OS X is UNIX practically, therefore Linux apps should work.xboxrulz
  8. I recommend SuSE because it's the easiest to use. Easy like Windows. Fedora is an experimental distribution and should not be used for daily uses. Mandriva one of the worst since it's bugged up.xboxrulz
  9. I started off w/ Linspire but it sucked after I tried Mandriva and SuSE.I stuck to SuSE ever since.xboxrulz
  10. Use SuSE, it's easy to install and use! I recommend it highly. It's better than Mandriva and Fedora Core. Also, it's definately better than Linspire or Xandros.xboxrulz
  11. SuSE Linux 9.3 is very very easy, I LOVE it. It is SO easy to use!Knoppix can be installed, but I hate it when it comes to installing it and install software w/ it unless I use APT-GET.xboxrulz
  12. I have a laptop running SUSE Linux, and it's great! Also about the power management, if it doesn't work properly, it might be because of 2 things, either your computer doesn't support ACPI or in KDE it is told to update every __ seconds. Reset it to 1 sec.For sound, please tell us the sound card or just update the sound system ALSA to 1.0.8.xboxrulz
  13. For normal software support just install normal WINE then install WineTools. For games, you DO need Cedega.xboxrulz
  14. Microsoft was founded in 1975 and Windows was first created in 1981 (according to Microsoft Windows 98 and Wikipedia) One stop click: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft and if you're an Open Source or Linux guy like me, look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux xboxrulz
  15. Sorry, qwijibow, but Apple is working like a charm, they're not falling apart. As for software patent, screw that, I'm against the EU with software patent as well. Back then, people relied on each other to solve complicated task because the information is free. (free as in freedom and not free beer.) Nowadays, these companies hogs them like if its their intellectual property and starts patent it. Most of Microsoft Windows' technology and abilities were stolen off others and even people at my school says that Bill Gates was the genius behind making the desktop, which in fact was XEROX and Apple who were the people behind it. Longhorn will copy the Linux multi-desktop system. Plus, Bill Gates even run Linux on his servers over their Windows Server System for Hotmail and for HALO2's development (thank you for confessing Bungie). Windows is also based on UNIX and it's been the most twisted and worst UNIX flavour I've ever seen. Also, how the hell can you patent parts of a programming language? "oooh, I'm Bill Gates and I'm gonna patent AND, IF, ISNOT, I'll patent everything"That is plain stupidity.xboxrulz
  16. For BITTORRENT, I use Azureus too and for P2P I use LimeWire. Plus, you should use LimeWire if you already use the GNUTELLA network which Shareaza primarily uses.xboxrulz
  17. apt-get is a really good program. I have it installed on my SUSE Linux desktop and my Fedora Core laptop.xboxrulz
  18. The best way to share files is to make a "bridge" drive. I mean that make a partition that is FAT32, which Linux can read and write perfectly. Mount that as /mnt/windata and your Windows /mnt/winsys. Then, your Linux and Windows can read the files that you want. I prefer to use that drive as my Documents area.xboxrulz
  19. Best to get packages for Mandrake is here: http://rpm.pbone.net/ It is much better than rpmfind and it practically has everything. xboxrulz
  20. Since there is no such thing is the best distro, therefore, I'll just suggest. The current ones are test done by me and here's my rating for being good at looking good, operating well, newcomer friendly and doesn't fall apart like Windows.**Note, the following is if you installed it, not running ON CD**KNOPPIX 7.0/10 (it's using DEB, which not every package is packaged in, but there APT-GET though...)SUSE 9.0/10 (lacks in laptop support, sometimes the battery monitor never works)Yoper 8/10 (lacks in auto detection, graphical installation, and support)Fedora 8.5/10 (only from FC3 Samba is easy to configure. Else, in order to use KDE as default you must edit its /etc/sysconfig/desktop file manually)Mandrake 4.0/10 (full of bugs and never able to upgrade any base software until its next release)Gentoo 5.0/10 (hard to compile, not newcomer friendly, but very rewarding and u can learn alot. Plus, it's very customizable)VidaLinux 6.0/10 (based on Gentoo, its easy to install but takes forever. Takes more than 1 hour for the installer to compile up to kernel, I never got passed it because it took too long.)Ark Linux 5.0/10 (Poorly reconfigured, cannot set to other init stages when boot, frustrating)Linspire 6.5/10 (Although its pretty good in performance and user friendly, most free software that you can just download has to be paid by joining their C-N-R program which means spending more than you need to)Slackware 7.0/10 (Although never thoroughly but installation is just like FreeBSD, finding and installing software is hard.)FreeBSD N/A (It never got a rating because it's not Linux, therefore, I'll skip)NetBSD N/A (It never got a rating because it's not Linux, therefore, I'll skip)College Linux 7.0/10 (it's exactly like Slackware)That's all folks, those are my ratings for the Linux distros.cya around.xboxrulz
  21. ooooh, ahhh, I'm definately looking forward to this if it's implemented for KDE too. Now, I don't need Mac OS X for its looks and Windows Longhorn for its looks too. All I need now is Linux.lolxboxrulz
  22. I find running Linux on Windows is meaningless, your system will still crash all the time even if you have Linux running virtually.Best to over-write your Windows if you want to discover the great world of Linux.xboxrulz
  23. Well, playing games in Linux is not a new thing but newer and better games are popping out for Linux indeed. I support gaming on Linux and the development of Linux. I'm a very big supporter if you go to Xisto and search for my Linux posts.xboxrulz
