  1. I find KDE to be faster, cleaner and better designed than GNOME.xboxrulz
  2. Haven't been at Xisto for a while but I have been busy with my rig and here's my latest specs: Name: BLUTYPHOON Processor: AMD Phenom II 810 @ 3 GHz Motherboard: ASUS M3A RAM: 4 x 2 GB G.Skill HK Series DDR2-800 Graphics: XFX Radeon HD 4850 Sound: Auzentech X-Raider 7.1 More of my specs and for latest specs here: https://kwokinator.com/computer-specs/ Here's my CPU-Z screenshot: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=995108 Cheers, xboxrulz
  3. Dude, I'm sure you can find something like the XServe to be something that a lot of users will access to and grab resources off of. I know there are credit card companies that uses MacOS X XServes to handle credit card transactions. xboxrulz
  4. lol, i know, but in English, at least in Canada, it's proper to say happy holidays. However, in Quebec and other French speaking communities, it's Merry Christmas is the proper term. xboxrulz
  5. I don't remember Solaris coming with aptitude. Last check, it uses it's own package manager. Only Nexenta uses APT-GET.xboxrulz
  6. Skype and iTunes works perfectly here. I've been running 64-bit OS ever since I built this new rig back in 2008. I don't play Guitar Hero at all and def. never even touched the PC version so I don't know if it's just lacking drivers. This, you need to talk to Aspyr about 64-bit support as they were the ones who ported the game. xboxrulz
  7. There are indeed improvements to Windows 7. However, if you're on Windows Vista, there's not much important improvements that is worth the $100+ upgrade from Vista. If you're on Windows XP, you have to get off XP and go Vista/7. I've had almost no problems with Vista ever since SP1 even if there were problems they're just minor user solvable issues. xboxrulz
  8. I just got a license for Windows Server 2008 R2, it's not bad, but not much of an improvement over Windows Server 2008 (you can replace Server 2008 R2 with Windows 7 and Server 2008 with Vista as the server versions aren't much different than their consumer counterpart when you don't count the server features). More on my impressions here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ xboxrulz
  9. I prefer Xine but MPlayer is just as good. If you don't want to care about codecs and etc., just use VLC. xboxrulz
  10. Ya, I'm running the RTM version of Windows Server 2008 R2 since 2 days ago. I did my full impression/review of it at my website here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The RTM version is basically small tweaks and critical bug fixes of the RC version. RC version is 90+% of what RTM is. xboxrulz
  11. Most of those laptops in the 300 - 500 pounds is usually poorly constructed compared to laptops in the 1000 pound range regardless if it's Mac or PCs. I have a Mac laptop and it is built sturdier than my friend's PC laptop, my laptop requires a lot less repairs than the PC counterpart. However, PC laptops that are in the same price range for my Mac is about the same in sturdiness so, it's all about you get what you paid for. Also, I'm no artsy guy, I'm a computer science student and I would rather have a Mac for a laptop than a PC laptop. For desktops, I have a PC at home. xboxrulz
  12. AMD didn't do that which I was surprised they didn't. I'm pretty sure AMD's doing this a marketing ploy since some enthusiasts would actually buy extra processors just to see if they can unlock them. We are already barely keeping up with Moore's Law right now, so I doubt we can get 1000 THz w/ 1024 cores. It's gonna be a tough squeeze as there may not be enough physical space to squeeze so many cores. I bet in the future we will have to invent a better point-to-point connection and have regular consumer running 2 physical CPUs just to keep up the performance demands. That and require programmers to be much more efficient than they are now. xboxrulz
  13. that comes with restrictions like you must have ACC on your motherboard (any southbridges like SB710 and 750) and unlocking isn't guaranteed. If you do get to unlock, they may or may not be stable. deltatux
  14. yes, the Phenom II 810 is a quadcore. The full name for this processor is the Phenom II X4 810. However, most people don't bother to write that as the model number already signifies that it's a quad core. Phenom II 500 --> quad core with two cores disabled w/ full 6 MB L3 Cache Phenom II 700 --> quad core with one core disabled w/ 6 MB L3 Cache Phenom II 800 --> quad core with no cores disabled w/ 4 MB L3 Cache (2 MB of its 6 MB L3 Cache disabled) Phenom II 900 --> quad core with no cores disabled w/ 6 MB L3 Cache There's no Phenom II 600 as of yet. deltatux
  15. Try uninstalling gstreamer and then reinstall it.Else, I use VLC or Xine to play videos. I don't really use gstreamer. I use Amarok to play my audio files.deltatux
  16. 17. whatever works on Vista will work on Windows 7. Don't treat Windows 7 is like a godsend as it's just a tweaked up version of Windows Vista. Actually with Windows Vista SP2, it's about just as fast as Windows 7 RC. So, don't believe what Microsoft is promoting as a saviour to Vista. xboxrulz
  18. how's it cheaper? Even I own a Mac and don't find them cheap at all. xboxrulz
  19. agreed. I too use Filezilla. It's probably the best FTP client you can find for any platform be it Windows, Mac or Linux. xboxrulz
  20. Personally using Google Chrome over Safari. I love the WebKit engine ... fast, stable, open source. Gotta have to hand it to KDE for starting the KHTML engine which Apple forked to make the WebKit.xboxrulz
  21. It's either Google changed something or the guy who approved me is sleeping on the switch, but my site is hosted at Asta AND it's a personal site lol.I was left no choice but to put ads, poor college student needs money to pay for domain and other costs...xboxrulz
  22. You should start a new thread and post your daughter's old PC. I'm using Windows 7 RC for my media centre and it's working flawlessly. xboxrulz
  23. You can manually download the Guide in the Settings section under Tasks. Under TV, press Get Latest Guide Listings. If that doesn't do it, reset up your guide, the system will overwrite the old guide data.xboxrulz
  24. Sounds like the system is dying but damn are those computers ancient artifacts. You really need a new system. Get something along the lines of this: AMD Athlon II 250 ($87): http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ASUS M3A76-CM ($64.99): http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ G.SKILL 2 X 2 GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18 ($46.99): http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Samsung 500GB 7200RPM HDD ($59.99): http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ HEC 6K28BBX585 Black 0.8mm SECC Steel MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case 585W Power Supply ($54.99): http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ HP Black 22X DVD+R 12X DVD-RAM SATA 22X Multiformal DVD Writer ($24.99) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Total: $338.95 (tax and shipping extra) Much better than keeping that dinosaur. xboxrulz
