  1. A lot of problems in the US is lack of funds for the typical school's computer lab. Often the place is run by volunteers or interns who need the credit for their courses.A friend of mine was telling me about her sister-in-law who went back to college at age 55 and was kicked out of a basic computer class. Since the woman didn't know what a double-click was and a few other basics, the instructor asked her to please leave.A year later, without having had any computer classes, this same woman was offered a job as an intern in the school's computer lab. Her job? Helping others to learn how to use the computer and other available resources!Did I mention that this woman never did figure out how to use her college's web based email?Incredible! On a happy note, this woman did turn down the job. If more school systems and colleges figured out how important the computer lab and techs are, they would put more money into them.
  2. You have your monitor on a surge protector?Someone told me once when a monitor starts acting wonky, that it might be the electrical outlet that it is plugged into. Have you tried putting the monitor on another outlet?I sure hope your monitor isn't dying. No one needs the expense of a new monitor.
  3. iPod Shuffle is really a sweet little device. A whistle? Funny, but I can see how it might look like a whistle. It is as small as a pack of gum. As for being able to organize the playlist, this is from the website: "DJ Your Day If you favour cycling to a hip-hop soundtrack and snowboarding to a little electronica, Autofill iPod shuffle from a specific iTunes Playlist and roll. Or just drag and drop individual songs from iTunes onto iPod shuffle. With Play in Order mode, you manage the music. If things take a turn for the predictable, never fear. Turn iPod shuffle over, flip the slider to Shuffle and mix on the go."
  4. Depending on which firewire cable you get and where you get it, prices will vary. Places like New Egg buy in huge quantities, so they can offer a lower price. When you have time to shop around, or live in an area where you have choices for your purchases, you can find better deals. If you live in an area that has few places from which to buy such things, you're stuck. Pay the price or don't get the item. A friend of mine in a rural area called Circuit City about prices on an external firewire hard drive. The website listed them, but the local store didn't carry them, preferring to sell the older usb external units. This shows that some people are stuck! From a purely retail point of view, there appears to be more profit in cables. Don't most people go for brand names, so they are willing to pay more? If you're on vacation and need a cable or you have to have one for a special project tonight, you'll pay the going rate for anything. Even if it does cost more than it should, we tend to just buy what we need and keep on going. $3 is a great deal, but doesn't look like the prices are that low now. I see they have a generic cable for $7 now. Anyway, it's good to try to save money, but sometimes, it just doesn't happen.
  5. I just looked up "taste labels" and "smart labels" and found nothing on it with Google. I even did a few other search words and nothing popped up.Is there another name for this new labeling system? I haven't seen it yet my way.
  6. Depends on what type of operating system you're running and what you do on the internet. There are free places online and often your internet provider offers free antivirus and spyware programs as part of your monthly fee. Many people are using AVG which is free and easy to use. Might not be a bad idea to get your free copy of Adaware which removes those annoying ads that get attached to your hard drive. There are a lot of programs out there, I hope you find one you like and use it. Of course, NO program is good unless you use it!
  7. Always helps to have a few links handy to remember the basics. The best site I know is HTML Goodies. It goes beyond the basics. Another site is The HTML Pitstop A very colorful site and one that might seem childish is Lissa Explains It All but it does have a lot of help in it. Learning is fun. Although I've read recently that HTML is going by the side as XML is going to be the new standard. Always something new!
  8. You made me curious with your post, so I did some searching for meanings of those features you listed. Crutchfield has a good basic definition of terms. Non-Techy definitions here. and this one has a bit more on the definitions. Lots to learn about HDTV. Hope this helps.
  9. My widget needs some work. When I get a chance I'll fix it up. I'm not using Tiger yet so it's hard to work on it right now.
  10. X11 site, just click Here is the link. You can download right from that page. The link is on the right.
  11. Ubuntu LiveCD is a way to try Linux on your mac without installing it. It runs off the cd. Check it out, right now, they are offering free cds and they pay for the shipping! If you're in a hurry, just download it. There are many places to find alternative operating systems for your mac. It's summertime. Enjoy and learn!
  12. I went through a few of the free places, but because of spamming problems, they all seemed to go to paid only accounts. Once I found Xisto, I was able to keep my own forum up and running with less hassle.Sometimes you just have to look around and ask questions.Yes, Asta IS this good.Posting isn't that hard. You can learn things from others, share your own thoughts and help others with problems. What could be better?
  13. re: $20 for 28.8 connectionLooks like many older people (my parent's age or older....sorry Mom!) tend to get an internet provider and stick with it, no matter what!A friend of mine told me about a 67 year old woman who keeps going back to AOL for dial up at the high price of $24 per month. The woman has many choices of a more reasonable dial up isp, but she is used to AOL. Change is hard for many older computer users, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't try.I know a woman in the boonies of Virginia who has one choice, dial up. She says she lives in an area where everything is long distance and DSL is only a treat she gets on vacation when the hotel has wireless. She currently pays $9.95 for her close to 43.3 dial up and is content. She did miss wireless once she got home from vacation.I've heard rates in other countries can be higher than the US, but from the posts here, it looks like some of their rates beat the ones I've heard about locally. If you have cable or satellite tv, then the price of tacking on a faster internet connection is less. If watching tv isn't something you're interested in, then spend the dollars on the net!
  14. Klear Screen is the way to go. Read their site. Some of the products that we might use for cleaning the bathroom mirror, can harm the delicate screens of the newer LCD monitors. FAQ tells why you should never use glass cleaner on the monitor. I like the new microfiber cloths for cleaning. They do a good job without streaking and don't leave behind any lint.
  15. 2T LaCie Drive Imagine having 2 terabytes! Of course, the price is more than I can pay out of petty cash!
  16. Steve's Digicam Reviews and Digital Camera Reviews are two great places to find detailed information on any camera. GO there and read up on some of the cameras available. It might help to do your homework before buying. I know a lady who has a Canon camera and raves about it. In fact, she can talk about the virtues of Canon until you just have to smile, nod and RUN! Hope these sites help.
  17. There are a lot of places that say you will be paid for this or that service online, but there will always be someone who thinks they can get rich and joins in.Frankly, my time is worth more than $1 an hour. This is the internet's equivalent to "stuff envelopes at home and earn $150 a day" that you see in the magazines. There is no free lunch. There is no easy way to make money, unless you put in the time, effort and don't mind getting your hands dirty.
  18. Hotmail and Yahoo are two email places that are free and started with ads as well. People used to call them evil, too. Just because GMail is offereing more space than anyone else means it has figured out a way to do it and make money. Remember, they first started off with their beta mail which was by invitation only, thus it was limited. Technology has given us more stuff for free. You won't find me complaining!
  19. I know people who have PNY, Sony and Sandisk. Some people stick with brand names, others buy whatever is on sale.Check out those sales online on Sunday morning. Staples has their latest sales flyer online each Friday. You can find the best prices in your town by surfing the net.Don't forget that all those rebate offers help save money towards the next toy!
  20. Promoting any site takes thought and time. One way is to make each email you send have your site as part of the signature. Same for any forum you visit, have your site url as part of the signature.Enlist family and friends to help spread the news of your site.Don't forget those free business card places (you might have to pay for nominal shipping) and hand out a few cards.Have each of your friends with a web site to link you on there. It will generate additional traffic.
  21. Apple Computer makes lighter portables. Why not go to a big store like Frye's Electronics that has the different computers and just lift a few up to see the weight?Don't forget, it isn't just the laptop, it is the bag you put it in and the accessories you carry about in that bag.
  22. Rubbing alcohol on a qtip works for the surface dirt on the keys.If you have dust around the keys and you don't happen to have a can of dangerous compressed air, try a toothpick. You can get a lot of crud out with one of those pointy sticks. Warning: a sharp toothpick can put your eye out!Shaking the keyboard yields all sorts of crumbs, hair, nail clippings and other treasures.Still, we need to keep our keyboards ready to input. My "E" key looks warn. Wonder if I use that key more than the others?
  23. Every Mac has a list of all the old and new macs. It also gives you the street value of it, so you'd know if the price is right. If you don't know what the mac came with, this gives the specs for everything. In case you aren't sure which mac you are dealing with, they have pictures which can help in the identification process. Another place that is a good source of macs is Apple History Sort of fun seening how the older macs looked, compared to the sleek ones out there now!
  24. Anyone use the hot corners to activate a screensaver? It helps when you have someone walk in the room and you don't want to share the masterpiece graphic you're creating or to let them see your emails.I know there are people who insist that a dvd player left on with the dvd still in it can burn an image on the tv screen. Not sure about that, but there are those who say it is true. That is why the internet is great. You can search things and find out what is true and what is an urban legend.
  25. What is your typical connection with dial-up?Are you satisfied with the speed of downloads and pages loading up?Then think of getting less than half that speed when you share with one other computer on that same connection.Sorry for all those who do not have DSL, but it is just plain truth. Sharing something slower, is just more frustration for all involved. Is there a reason you don't have DSL? I'm fortunate to have it myself.
