  1. You should always try different media when getting an error message. Memorex isn't supposed to do well with Apple computers, according to their tech people.I was told that one should never clean the optical drive, but there are many products available to clean the laser area of the cd or dvd drive. Does anyone know about them?Hope you were able to get this fixed. Let us know.
  2. I'm wondering if something might have happened to that electrical socket. It's happened to me before, something going on in the lines somewhere and blowing the outlet.Did you try moving the computer to another location and trying that? Please tell me you had a surge protector on your computer. Many times, even a cheap surge protector, has saved a good gaming computer.I feel for you.Let us know what happened.
  3. Is there a remote possibility that the electrical socket isn't working properly? It can happen. Try plugging the battery and laptop into another socket that you know is working. Plug a lamp in it and make sure first. Guess you don't have a friend with a laptop with a working ac adapter that you could borrow to see if that is the problem? Maintaining and Troubleshooting your Laptop Battery has some good tips. Lithium Based Battery information I hope you are able to resolve this issue with a minumum of frustration and money.
  4. I have DSL from ISPWest. The DSL is rated for 256k download and 256k upload. But I usualy only get about 100k. But at least it's better than dial up!
  5. A few years ago people were saying the same thing when Microsoft bought Hotmail. They were worried about information being passes along.Gmail is google. Google has bots. I have a Googlebot that has been scanning my forum for the past week. It is part of the online life.If you read the fine print at Gmail or any place where you receive/send emails, there are rules. Rules are meant to protect the company providing the service. Look at your internet service provider's terms of service. Nothing is absolutely private.Cell phone companies save text messages for quite a few years and keep them in storage in case someone wants them. Sure, let me know what I was supposed to bring home from the store June 23, 2001.Gmail is good and I don't have to pay for it. It is no more "evil" than anything else on the web.Only someone with something to hide would worry. In this electronic age, there is a lot of information out there floating about, easily grabbed. Why worry?Just enjoy the features that Gmail offers and be glad it has an overly generous storage.
  6. Never saw that site before, but your topic should be changed a bit.Why would a pc user want to have their desktop resemble a Mac?I think maybe this topic should be moved to another area? This really isn't for the Mac OS, the site is actually for Window users who want to look like they have a Mac desktop.Strange, but interesting.
  7. Sometimes doing a quick search can bring answers. Updated yesterday so maybe this is your Nero to download. This guy had problems too and there are a few suggestions here.
  8. Google Search brings up a bunch of sites with download and reviews of programs. Why not check out a few of them and see what you can find that works best for you? CD RIpper Software Review Daily MP3 These two sites look like they have a lot of programs, so I'm sure you'll find something. Have you ever tried using iTunes? Download and information here
  9. I've always used Apple and it works great for me. We're a large family of Mac users. I agree that many of the games and other software programs that a windows user can get first makes many people choose windows. Many people can't afford Macs since they are a bit more. When you buy Mac, you're buying the complete package. Apple is the computer AND the operating system. When you buy a Gateway, you have a Gateway computer, with a Microsoft operating system. When you buy a Dell, you have a Dell computer, with a Microsoft operating system. When you buy a .....well, you get the picture. Anyway, to address the HEATING issue in a POWERBOOK, avoid the "Flurry" screensaver. It is known to cause the cpu to heat up. A friend of mine uses iBreeze under her iBook to keep it cooler. It has two small fans which run off the usb. It keeps things cooler even in the summer heat. Have you tried checking the temperature of the Powerbook using some of the nice programs out there? Temperature Monitor Thermograph Macs rule!
  10. PhotoShop Elements has some of Photoshop without the expense. It does a lot for the money. Another fun program to try might be Gimp which is free and fun to use. You didn't say if money was a consideration. I know that I like my free programs and always pay for shareware programs I find. Hope you find something you like to use.

  12. My friend is on the road this holiday weekend and just sent me this site. When they checked into the room (a Super8 this time) she was given this site to get information on the connection and the security it afforded. Pretty cool. She says being able to read the hotel's internet information gives a feeling of more security. Now if she just didn't have to worry about the ibook being taken when she was out for a meal...
  13. I did a quick search and there are a lot of topics online about errors while using a Memorex brand cd media. Have you tried another brand to see if the problem is the Memorex brand? It is always best to try several brands since some burners seem to favor one brand over another. What program are you using to burn?
  14. It's always good to know what is inside your hard drive and get rid of unwanted files, especially if you want to keep your system trim. Take a look at DeLocalizer which removes unwanted language files from the computer. The default is set to keep English files. Depending on the number of programs, this can clean out a gig of unwanted files. If you have one, backing up your mac to an external hard drive so that you can wipe your mac's hard drive is one way to get out the junk that accumulates. It does seem extreme, but many mac users have told me that they do this once a year just to keep their mac in top operating form. It does take time and patience. If you have the original cds for your mac, then maybe you should dump programs you aren't using. Do you use Quicken? Using that free AOL and Earthlink internet stuff that routinely is slapped on new computers? Do you use the browsers that are on there? Chilyo is right. Looking at what is inside those folders, you get an idea of what you are using and what you can remove without causing problems. I use MacJanitor myself. The mac is set to automatically at 3 am and unless it is on, certain routine cron routines can't be run. MacJanitor does it for me at the click of a mouse. What kind of mac do you have? I have an iBook.
  15. Make sure to pack your bag with all the necessary items. My friend said one thing she felt good about remembering was her surge protector. Not all hotels have nice looking outlets if you want to plug in your laptop. She took advantage of the hotel's safe a few times as well. A few places she stayed did have a safe inside the hotel room, which she used. Read the small print, the hotel doesn't replace anything lost while you are there.Hotel staff often leaves the room door open (YOUR room!) while they are down the hall taking a break, sipping on coffee or talking to a friend. Anyone can walk into your room and waltz out with your valuables, including that laptop.
  16. Those icons or avatars take a program that does animation. Depending on your level of graphic knowledge, there are a lot of programs out there to use. If you like the work on that site you shared, why not ask that person how they do their icons? Most forums allow 96 x 96 on average. You try doing a search? Just doing a quick search and I found these tutorials: Making animated avatars with Paint Shop which has the url for a free demo of the program shown. Tutorial on AIM animated icons GConvert has a nice looking tutorial. I'm going to look at it myself. A whole list of tutorials This is summer and time to learn a new computer skill.
  17. A friend of mine was on vacation and stayed in hotels where they offered a variety of wireless and wired free internet. She took her Apple iBook, kept it password protected and didn't leave it on the wireless network unless she was actually using it. She didn't notice any security issues, but she did encounter some problems with getting online.Depending on the hotel chain and the location of the property, getting online could be challenging or easy. Make sure you take along your own ethernet connection, which she neglected to do. The hotels often supply them, but want a $20 deposit to use one.As for security, I'd make sure any personal information would be removed from the computer and that everything is password protected. If you check email, do so from web based email and not from your own hard drive. Lots of information can be in an email or even a forgotten document on your hard drive.Have a great vacation.
  18. You might want to try a few DSL speed sites to see if you're actually connecting at the speeds you're paying for. See if the DSL company you're using has a speed test on their website. If not, here are a few sites to check out. DSL Reports CNET Bandwidth Meter Speed Test Bandwidth Place If you find you're not connecting at the speed you're paying for, then call your DSL people and try to figure it out. Meanwhile, upgrading the graphics card wouldn't hurt.
  19. I just replied to your internet post.Having time on your hands is good. You'll have time to get your computer fixed up and you can earn your hosting credits.Sharing your wisdom is part of what Xisto is all about. Share away.Welcome to the best hosting spot I've ever had the pleasure to find.
  20. Sounds like it is time to do some basic maintenance on your computer.Try a defrag.Clean out some of your old bookmarks, too.Check for any spyware and adware that may have attached to your computer.Check out a faster/better internet company. You didn't mention what operating system you have, but maybe you should read the owner's manual.AND don't forget to scan and remove any viruses or trojans that have gotten on your cpu.Smile, it could be worse. At least you were able to post here.Since you don't like coming to Xisto for hosting, there are plenty of other places to go. They aren't as good or reliable, but they will give you cause to grumble!Fix your computer and internet connection, then see if you don't have a different attitude, dude.
  21. MacWorld has good news, reviews and forums. I know the guy Jim Dalrymple who does a lot of the news. I'm a member of his personal forum where he does a lot of tweaking for fun. I have more sites, but that will do for now.
  22. NetZero may seem a good price, but if you have problems, they charge $1.95 a minute for live support. From their website: "How does NetZero HiSpeed 3G work? Before the text and graphics that make up Web pages get sent to you over your phone line, NetZero HiSpeed 3G compresses them using a proprietary technology. Less data is sent so the download of pages and your surfing experience are that much faster! In addition, NetZero HiSpeed 3G stores elements of the Web sites you visit frequently so you do not have to re-download them every time you visit these sites." I've heard people talk about this and it doesn't always seem to work for everyone. I'm wondering if the difference might be someone with a faster cpu, too.
  23. Read the FAQs In an emergency, you can purchase hosting credits. The best way is to keep your hosting alive is to post. Depending on when you leave for vacation, you can do it. Just a few posts each day will get you where you need to be to keep the account active. If you have internet access while on vacation, you can easily hop on and do some posting. Most hotels have a business center where they allow people to use the internet, so maybe you'll be able to do that. Good luck.
  24. If money is a consideration, like your mom expecting you to pay for it, go for the USB external burner. With more and more drives and burners being firewire based, as it is much faster, the USB ones are coming down in price.I suggest you check a few of the sites online to see how much prices are going and what brand names are out there.Depending on where you live, you can find a bargin.I'd go with the best dvd-cd burner that you can afford.Happy hunting!
  25. You need to consider your money, too. Do you have satellite for tv or just for internet? Broadband Guide is a good place to look to understand the differences and get an idea of what to ask for when calling the different companies to compare. TechSoup had a good article on the pros and cons of the different internet connections available. I'd call up each company, after looking at their website claims. Often, the real person to talk with is someone in the tech support area. They can tell you the most common problems that people call in. I have DSL myself and not satellite. I've heard satellite depends on where the dish is set and often snow or leaves get in there and cause problems.
