  1. I'm laughing at myself trying to read your joke. At least I knew they're boy and girl and the rest will be up to my imagination.I guess they were in disagreement about something and that thing must be funny.can you provide some translation so that I check my guessing?
  2. I like those jokes. The nice thing about them is that you try to predict the end as you read but it ends in a way you didn't anticipate.
  3. My problem with horror movies is that once the movie ends I never remember what the story was. It's something like a nightmare.I like thriller movies after a difficult work day. It’s my first choice.
  4. Oh, I came to this topic thinking that I will learn something about it. I have no clue.Maybe I come back when somebody posted any information. Meanwhile I might google that topic and see the outcome
  5. I would say that your English is intermediate which could easily develop to advanced. The fact that you can talk about a variety of topics with aq language that people understand qualifies you to that level I mentioned. We all as non-native speakers of English need to acquire the skill of self-correction. That helps a lot in developing accuracy.Using the language a lot in a free way to expree yourself would help your fluency.
  6. I think that the definition of criticism will depend on our definition of literature. Amongst many definitions I would see literature as a reflection and interpretation of human life. A piece of literature wouldn't be of much value unles it's opens a wide space for contemplation and interpretation for the reader. Different readers can see different things in the same text. Even the reader can revisit the same text and see more new things every time.Having said that I tend to see criticism as a kind of reading that reveals most of the hiddent elements in a text. Like you said it's not a process of evaluation just to judge a certain work to be good or bad.
  7. Hi rpgsearcherz, Looking forward to it.I'd love to have an idea about it. Would you consider posting about the development of that project here so that we can learn from the work of the people involved in the project? It looks like you have professional designer around in this forum.
  8. I have developed an online test with a very complex layout and I have big issues with IE.I'm using jQuery selector to hide and show certain classes. What I learnt is that IE can't deal with multiple class selector, it selects the first and ignores the rest.
  9. Well, in that sense I think my capitalization is a mix.But what do you thin of starting that kind of tutorials here?
  10. I don't know how the students in special class deal with the situation of being isolated in their own class.Wouldn't it be more appropriate to have them in a school for special education rather than a class amongst other students?I have friends who grew up in such schools and they were doing fine.
  11. I had a very nice experience teaching in Brunei for a short time.I liked the country a lot although it's a small country.I saw all types of fruits and vegetables that I've never sen before and tried new food. The people there are very friendly and welcome the strangers.I'm looking forward to go there again.
  12. It's a good thing as long as you stick to the right group. But again you can never tell when a group will turn into a burden. That depends a lot on your relationship with its members and if you all have many things in common. Some groups continue even up to the university.
  13. Have you tried to contact other senior students in your school.Sometimes people exchange used books. You might post am add where other students or parents see it. That might work.
  14. I really miss those good old days.I enjoyed the play time, the competitions, making new friends and the challenge of learning new things. In my time life was simple. I played more than I did homework, not because I was lazy, but that was simply the system.I learnt a lot from discussions with my teachers and reading in the school library.
  15. Ok, we still understand the words even if they're misspelled. But is it a good thing to encourage?Language became a system for communication by obeying certain rules. The written language wouldn’t have been there without sticking to some rules. It’s true that those rules have certain degree of flexibility which allows languages to develop and evolve. From time to time an irregularity becomes a rule, that’s fine as long as the majority of language users agree.English in my opinion is a special case as it doesn’t belong to the English native speakers alone. Many other cultures share the natives that language and do whatever suits them with it. But does that mean it’s a good practice to have multiple versions of written English? And how many dialects of the written language can English cope with? For me, spelling counts even if I made spelling mistakes myself. I still try to correct them.
  16. This is a brilliant idea. I’ve just raised that issue today specially for English before I come across this topicI think I’ll give the French a try.Any one for Arabic?
  17. In countries where education is corrupted it doesn’t make difference whether you put children in public or private schools.I have seen ignorant teachers, the outcome of a bad education system, giving kids bad example and teaching them wrong concepts. In the third world unless you can afford the elite schools it doesn’t really make a diference.Parents also have their share. They don’t spend enough time with their kids to teach them something valuable, that’s the main problem.
  18. Old societies had great respect for teachers and never treated them as other paid jobs. Look at most Asian cultures and see how much they respect teachers. That made some ask the question, is teaching really a job? Meaning it’s defined within the range of what you do and what you’re paid for? I don’t think so. Compared to say a contractor, the job is simply defined as: you build me that thing with those specifications and I pay you that amount of money. Teaching is not like that. Teaching is more like: you bear up with me, help me learn that and deal with my personal learning problems and my frustrations and give me genuine support, and I can only contribute to your income with that amount of money. The relationship here is more humanistic than a business type of relation.
  19. In my teaching I try to simulate some common models of real life reading.Real life: You read because you want to or need to --> Teacher: Creates interestYou make use of your background knowledge to understand a text ---> Teacher: Establish necessary background knowledgeReal life: You read for a reason --> Teacher: set a task before readingReal life: You do something with what you read --> Teacher: Get students to reflect on what they read or do some related activity
  20. That's a situation that I woudn't like to be in, specially with kids but I could imagine what might happen.I might have started with teaching them how to say simple things like "Hello, my name is ...., what's your name.Learning from your experience I wouldn't show that I don't understand what they say, I would simply ban the use of native language in class and insist on getting responces in English.I might take a lot of time demonstrating, modeling and drilling and using all the pair group work tricks to get them say what I taught.I would survive for one hour doing that but 2 hours is a killer.
  21. respect, honesty, responsibility, cooperation, hard work, and compassion.I really love that. That would:achieve peace in the worldmake life of individuals a real heaveneliminate povertyeliminate crimeBut that raises a question, how would educators achieve that in societies that lak to most of these values if we consider learning by example?Just a thought.
  22. Looking back at how much I learnt while being online I can say it's half what I learnt all my life.I can't really draw a list of things that I learnt online for some reasons. First it's along list and second I don't want to misunderstood specially with my avatar that looks like Mr. know-it-all :)But my problem with most of what I learnt is that it's kind of incomplete and never matches a level near to a pro. There're lots of gaps in what I learnt.
  23. Hi,Sure we have many members who come from India and who can offer beginners tutorials in Hindi. We can teach each othe our native languages and I think this is the right place to post that. Don't you agree?I don't know what other native languages we have around in this forum. It would be nice to survey that if that doesn't break any privacy rules.
  24. This is an invitation for all non-native speakers of English in this forum to post their questions about English language. People with good English, that doesn't include me:), can reply with answeres, corrections or suggestions. Short tutorials would be a good idea. Some ideas for tutorials: common expressions and phrases that are useful for writing in our forum common errors in using prepositions explaining some useful idioms Actually I can post the first question here which really irritates me: What's the rule for capitalizing headlines? I'm not even sure that I got the capitalization for the title of this topic right. I'm looking forwared to your contributions here.
