The only reason I mentioned the OS and browser is that it does not happen to me at all when using Firefox in Ubuntu. Yet it happens about every 5 minutes in Safari in OS X. But who knows, I didn't really think it was an OS/Browser issue, but the fact that it differs so much for me between the two OS's I use is quite odd.

This topic is for Hax, please don't hijack the thread with your own welcome posts. We would love to hear more from you in your own dedicated introduction topic! It's just rather difficult for other members to welcome you if you post all of your introductions in one thread.

Just an interesting point here, whenever I am on Xisto using safari on OS X the same thing happens to me. I get logged out after about 1-2 mins. This isn't a huge concern to me because I am usually booted into linux, but I find it interesting that another member is experiencing the same issue. I wonder if it is the browser or the OS that is causing the problem...

You need to be a bit more specific about what you want. Are you planning on storing the articles on your local server in a database somewhere, or are you loading it from an external site. If you want to load from a database on your server it should be fairly easy to make two pages, one with a list of small segments from each article in the database, and one that shows the full article. If you were a bit more specific on how you wanted it to work I could help you out a bit more.

Have you checked if software update is one of your login items? If it's not take a look at your preferences for how often you want it to check for new updates. It may be set to check daily, however it should be checking for new software in the background and shouldn't be prompting you unless it finds updates.

You can use your mycents that you get at Xisto to the same domain/hosting you had on Xisto! When you receive mycents it all goes into your xisto billing account no matter which website you received them from. So you can continue posting on both if you wish and the revenue you generate will go toward any plans you decide to purchase.

Welcome Alex To The Moderator's Team
galexcd replied to OpaQue's topic in Alerts, News & Announcements
I am very unhappy. I feel deeply offended that you members think I am evil. I am not sure if I can ever recover from this horrible agony you have bestowed on me. -
I haven't used the file manager in CPanel in a long time, but I found it immediately. I just clicked on "File Manager" in the CPanel and it was a checkbox: Perhaps your version of CPanel is different and you don't have this option, because it seems to be in a rather obvious location, and I'm surprised you weren't able to find it.

As the newest mod on the team, I think I am more like a member than any of the others. Therefore I think I should be one of the first to post and relive some of the tension that has been building up here. Anwiii, You have been a part of our community for quite a long time. In fact, you joined around the same time I decided to start posting on Xisto again. (I took a rather long leave when I first started). I remember reading your rants on various things, and being thoroughly entertained. I consider you to be a friend and I am hurt that you have such negative feelings toward the team I am newly part of. You do make many good points. For one thing, the variety of punishments members can receive for breaking the rules. I think that is mostly my fault, and for that, I apologize. There are guidelines for us with suggested outcomes for different violations of the board rules, and I have been rather timid when disciplining members. I have been sending members PM's when the guidelines tell me to issue a warning, I have been issuing warnings when, according to the guidelines, I should be issuing a suspension. However, I can assure you that I am not "playing favorites". As you say, there are many different reasons that someone is breaking the rules. One member may be intentionally breaking the rules to get an unfair advantage, while others might just not be familiar with the rules. Because of this, it is not really possible to have a standard set of guidelines for specific rules. But rules are rules, and when you join Xisto, you are expected to have read them and follow them. Warnings are just that, they are a chance for a member to realize their fault and change their ways. Warnings are not a ban. Although they may sometimes come with a short posting suspension, you are still welcome to our community. I appreciate your courage to come out and express your opinions against the moderating team. There may be others who feel the same way and are remaining quiet. Expressing your opinions openly is the best way to get things to change. I'm not saying anything will change, this is OpaQue's boards after all, and he has supreme jurisdiction over them, but nothing will happen unless you come out and say it. It also hurts me that both of you have such strong feelings against TrueFusion. I consider him as a good friend as well (it might just be the secret penguin connection we have, but I like the guy). Now I'm going to go off-topic for a second, but I used to work in a place with a lot of gossip. All of my co-workers were gossiping about how my other co-workers did this or that, and how they are bad at this or that. And to be honest, I felt uncomfortable. I always was wondering what they were saying behind my back. When a new manager got there, she put a stop to all of that and started a new policy: If you have a problem with someone, tell it to their face. I feel this is a great policy to take with me and I would highly recommend it on these forums. If you don't like something that a moderator did on these forums let that moderator know. I highly doubt TrueFusion would get angry at you for expressing your opinions if you do it reasonably and politely. And hopefully we can get TrueFusion to post here and agree with that. Now, as for the thread that you are talking about, I am assuming you are talking about this one? Now I really don't want to start that debate up again. It's been closed because it turned into an all-out brawl between members and moderators, and if we're not careful and civilized, the same thing may happen here. You may ask why such a harsh punishment is given out for forgetting to quote something? It is because OpaQue is giving out money to members for posting because these forums pay for it. When you post original content on Xisto, it increases the amount of people visiting, which increases the amount of ad revenue for Xisto. When you post content that you have copied from somewhere else, that doesn't much help the forum pay for itself. Most people using a search engine would find the original website, not Xisto because it would most likely have more links pointing to it since it's been around longer. That is why we need to take plagiarism so seriously. For this forum to continue supplying members with free hosting it needs to be generating a revenue for Xisto. When you quote something, you don't get any myCent's for it, and Xisto doesn't get any revenue from it. It all seems rather fair to me. I have been thinking how exactly I can wrap this post up. I'm not trying to take any sides, mainly because I don't really have just one single opinion on the matter. I agree that things could go a little smother here, but we do need rules, and we need to make sure members follow those rules or this forum will end. I hope both members and moderators read my post and take what I have said into consideration. Things aren't running perfectly around here, but with the amount of members we have I'm surprised this place isn't utter chaos. The moderators are doing an amazing job at keeping this forum going.

When the myCENT system came to be, there were many topics like this one; asking what is to become of the hosted group. OpaQue said he has no intentions of keeping the group, and he might replace it. Unfortunately OpaQue is quite busy trying to fix any remaining problems with Xisto, and I'm sure that removing the Hosted group and replacing it with other more interesting groups is pretty low on his priorities. But you can ask him what his plans are and when he thinks he can get to them.

I think what everyone has been trying to say is, yes it is possible to do such a thing, however it is not recommended. The $_GET variable isn't some godlike variable with magical properties, it's an ordinary array, just like if you were to define a new array called $EXAMPLE[] with strings for indices. However, doing something like this for authentication purposes is just sloppy. It is not good code etiquette. Sloppy code is more difficult to read and can cause confusion if another programmer takes over the project. It is better to do something like dolrich06 suggested in his first post. But if you are not willing to change the code you have currently, go ahead and set the get variable to whatever you want to. It will not cause any problems to the page.

I have been using Google Voice for quite a while now, and I don't know how I got by before without it. I have no cell reception at my house, and I do not have a land line, so I was primarily using text chat and email to keep in touch with people when I was at home. Once I got Google voice, however, I signed up for Skype in ($60/yr) so I can get incoming and make outgoing phone calls via google voice. Viola, when someone rings my google voice number, it rings my cell when I am away and my skype when I am home. Perfect.

It looks like it's refreshing the whole page because you've got the image within an anchor tag. If you just include the refresh image with the onclick attribute it should work fine. And if you wanted to you could use css to turn the cursor into a hand when hovering over the image to make it look a bit more like a link.

If I Disable My Hosting Account, Will Google Apps Go Too?
galexcd replied to The Simpleton's topic in Web Hosting Support
I was going to leave this question to someone who might be a little more knowledgeable on how exactly google apps is set up when ordering through Xisto, but since nobody has replied, I'll leave what I know to be true. I believe google apps does not require an active hosting account to function, and deleting your account through Xisto shouldn't touch your google account. In fact, if I'm not much mistaken, once you've set up your google apps account it never goes away. However, you will need to keep your domain name or you will not be able to receive any new email to your google apps account. But again, I could be wrong. This question might be best for Xisto - Support, or possibly even google itself. -
I just wanted to make a quick point: Take a look at Asta Host. They got a theme redesign about the same time Xisto did. At first look their theme might look really pretty, and you might want something like that for this forum. But if you spend some time there reading the topics and posting, the theme begins to look too busy; it's a breath of fresh air to come back to Xisto and view its nice clean look. Flashy themes may first make you think "oooh pretty", but when it comes down to it, functionality and readability are the most important parts of a theme. Also, if you think this theme is boring, take a look at what Xisto used to look like using the wayback machine.

Your best bet would be to use AJAX. Basically it is a way that javascript can send and receive information from a web-server without having to reload the page. It will let the image and information change without any visual indication to your users that the page is loading any data. What I would recommend is make a new file on your server, (PHP, ASP, or whatever server-side programing language you prefer). And have this file print out the information that you want ajax to check. For example, include the URL to the image, and whatever other data you might want to update, like a name. If it's more than just a URL to an image we will need javascript to parse the information from the file, so I would recommend using some symbol that will not be part of the name, url, or any of the other data being sent. Usually when I do something like this, I like to use a semi-colin. Once you've got that page up and running it should output something like this: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Smith;John Smith is a good dj Note how I have separated the image url, name, and description with semi-colins. Now we'll want to create some tags around the data that we want to change so javascript can modify it easily. I personally love using div layers to do this, but any tag that can handle the id attribute should be fine. We also want to add a name attribute to the image tag so we can change it on the fly as well. For Example: <img name="djimg" src="<? echo $dj_img; ?>"> ... <div id="djname"><? echo $dj_name; ?></div> ... <div id="djdesc"><? echo $dj_desc; ?></div> Now let's write some javascript. For now, I'm just going to make an empty function called getData. This is where the ajax will go. You want to have javascript run this function periodically (say about once or twice a minute), and replace the image, name, and description. I'm going to add a timeout so it calls itself every 500 milliseconds. I'm also going to make a new function called update that replaces the data in the div layer we created earlier. We will have the getData function call this one when there is new information. function getData(){ /* ajax will go here */ return 0;settimeout("getData()",500);}function update(value){var data=value.split(";");if(document.images) document["djimg"].src=data[0];document.getElementById("djname").innerHTML=data[1];document.getElementById("djdesc").innerHTML=data[2];}window.onload = getData; Now let's write the ajax: var page="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (window.XMLHttpRequest) { getv= new XMLHttpRequest(); if (getv.overrideMimeType){ getv.overrideMimeType("text/xml"); }}else if (window.ActiveXObject) { try { getv = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.xmlHttp"); getv.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); }catch (e) { try { getv= new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.xmlHttp"); }catch (e) {} }}ret=-1;getv.onreadystatechange = function(){ if (getv.readyState == 4) { ret=getv.responseText; update(ret); getv=-1; } }; getv.open("POST", page); try{ getv.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); } catch(e){} getv.send(""); return ret; And now to put it all together: <img name="djimg" src="<? echo $dj_img; ?>"> ... <div id="djname"><? echo $dj_name; ?></div> ... <div id="djdesc"><? echo $dj_desc; ?></div> ... <script type="text/javascript"> var getv=-1; var page="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;; function getData(){ while(getv!=-1){} if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { getv= new XMLHttpRequest(); if (getv.overrideMimeType){ getv.overrideMimeType("text/xml"); } }else if (window.ActiveXObject) { try { getv = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.xmlHttp"); getv.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); }catch (e) { try { getv= new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.xmlHttp"); }catch (e) {} } } ret=-1; getv.onreadystatechange = function(){ if (getv.readyState == 4) { ret=getv.responseText; update(ret); getv=-1; } }; getv.open("POST", page); try{ getv.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); } catch(e){} getv.send(""); return ret; return 0; settimeout("getData()",500); } function update(value){ var data=value.split(";"); if(document.images) document["djimg"].src=data[0]; document.getElementById("djname").innerHTML=data[1]; document.getElementById("djdesc").innerHTML=data[2]; } window.onload = getData; </script> Let me know if it doesn't work or if you have any questions.

Ahhh, the joys of reformatting a drive and re-integrating all the data. It's one of my favorite pastimes. It's loads of fun until you realize you forgot to back up an important file after you just finished formatting...

My first semester of college was like this. I knew nobody that went there, and I was completely stressed out by the sudden change in pace. However, that quickly subsided. Now I love it. After you get your GE's out of the way and you start taking classes relevant to what you want to do with your life, it is fascinating. I've found that I don't need to take notes anymore in these classes. When you're learning something you are actually interested in you'd be surprised how well you can remember everything. I too hated waking up early so after my first semester, I started taking late classes starting around 11 or noon. I do, however, feel your pain about the heat. Here in Los Angeles it's not 116?, but it's pretty close, and when I've got a bag with my laptop and books in it, it can be exhausting walking around campus. I try to spend as much time inside as possibly can.Don't give up! It's a big change in your life but I guarantee that once you get into it, you'll like it.

Saintmichael Needs To Shave His Beard Off!
galexcd replied to gisellebebegirl's topic in General Discussion
How can you be so heartless as to tell someone with PFS (Puppet face syndrome), like SM, to shave his beard off. People with PFS are very sensitive about that kind of stuff. I for one thinks SM looks beautiful just the way he is: -
That is true, to a point. However, like Linux, OS X is based on unix which is heavily permissions based. If a program doesn't have a root password it cannot write to certain places on the hard drive that are owned by root. Now of course if a user is dumb enough to give a suspicious program their administrator or root password, they deserve whatever is coming to them.

Html Page Aggregator How to bring multiple pages into one page
galexcd replied to Tramposch's topic in Programming
If it is a server running a unix based OS you could use a cron job that calls a command like: cat * > index.html That way you don't have to deal with php or js, or really anything. It will just automatically generate an index.html page at whatever interval you specify, that contains the content of all the files in the current working directory.
