New Logo I Did For Astahost
Ahsaniqbalkmc replied to TheUnreal's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
The logo is good but it is a bit too simple for a grown-up website like Xisto. The logo has a cartoony look and it will suit better to stuff like entertainment websites or children stuff. The idea of making "no ads" red was quite good from commercial point of view. Such things should pop-up really so that the eye first falls on them. So nice job! -
Any Service That Is Opposite Of A Dictionary
Ahsaniqbalkmc replied to Ahsaniqbalkmc's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I tried the first one and I liked it. The funny thing is that the words which I thought would be wrong and for which I laughed at myself, were actually appearing on the top of the list when I performed the search on onelook. So, a man who asks a question is asker, as well as questioner. These are correct words and I should be proud for thinking about those. -
Recently, my attention is focused on an important issue. On all pages of my website, I have three ad units. They look a little ugly but I am happy to stick with them. They dont cause much problem when the actual content of the page is long enough. In such pages, the size of the content is enough to prevent visitors make a negative impression about the website. However, when the content of the page is small, say about 200 words or less, then the real problem starts. The website looks spammy and anyone who is not a big fan, will quickly leave. I would here like to say that I cannot make every page greater than 400 words. The theme and the subject of the website has been developed in such a way that some pages will remain short. So all I can do is find some way to reduce the number of ad units on pages with little text. I am using wordpress and the website is http://www.mananatomy.com/. Any help is appreciated.

I am finding it quite hard to manage. I think I would stick to inbox2. Its quite awesome. At least for me.

Today, when I was writing an article, I suddenly stuck. I wanted a word that can describe "a man who asks a question". At that time my mind had stopped working and I thought of words like "asker" or "questioner". Pretty funny!. But that is how it is. More often than not, it happens to me and I forget specific words. I don't know about others but it is quite common to me.So after I thought these funny words, I thought why not try to find something on the internet that can help me with this. An indirect way would be to write the definition of the word, in this case "a man who asks question" and search for it in the google. Somewhere in the results, there must be a page of a dictionary website containing this line. But believe me this approach is as hard as hell. Sometimes you would have to go till the 5th or 6th page of the search results to get what you are looking for. That is why I have started the hunt for a service that is opposite of a dictionary service. That is instead of defining a word, it should provide a word for specific definition. In my case, it should provide what we call a person who asks a question or who has asked the question.Does anyone know about such a service? Or any other way of getting specific words for such definitions.

Before the redesign, when someone clicked on "Open Discussion & Free Web Hosting" link and reached the index of the forum, on the top was a section containing the latest activity. It showed the topics which were active and newly created topics. It showed the latest posts added to topics. That section was very useful for me and I hope it was useful for lot of other users as well. Unfortunately, I am unable to find that section now and I have problems now to find active topics and newly added stuff so that I can contribute to them. As a result I have to randomly go into various sections and irrespective of the activity of the topic, I will add stuff to it (if I like the topic). What this means is that often I end up adding questions to topics which are not active and as a result my questions won't get answered. Or I would answer questions, the answers of which don't interest the topic starters anymore. So please tell me where can I find that laterst activity section. And if that section has completely been removed, I would suggest Xisto to please add it to the index page again. With the new design, it would really increase the productivity of lots of members.

As all of you were talking about thunderbird, I thought to give it a try. I downloaded the setup and installed it without any issue. First impression was great. My primary email was set flawlessly and there wasn't any trouble. But where is the option to add other email accounts. I can't find it. Can thunderbird manage multiple email accounts. If yes, then please tell me how to do this. And if no, then this great looking software is of no use for me.

I don't understand the technical part of all this. You may laugh, but believe me I don't understand what you meant by "most computers have several text terminals and one graphic terminal". Can you please elaborate on this a little. I mean I have used linux only one (for about half an hour) and the terminal there was a thing like dos or command prompt. As far as the operating system go, I am on windows 7 so can you talk about how to make this possible on windows 7 OS. You said that if I want to share a single cpu with several persons, I must have a graphic terminal. What does this mean? Does windows 7 have a graphic terminal? In this case, I am not concerned about power. If the system is able to just do browsing and run word, it is more than sufficient. I think if a triple core CPU (from AMD) is distributed, it should be more than sufficient to do that kind of basic stuff. I was assuming that distributing the CPU power in that way to two persons would be just analogous to running multiple applications. For example as I mentioned in my first post, if one person uses firefox and other uses internet explore, I assume that it won't take any more CPU power than running the two applications together on a single screen. Please correct me if I am wrong and elaborate on this. You said that one solution is to use a windows server and several graphic terminals. Is this possible on windows 7 or I will need to shift to something like windows server 2003 etc. Also please explain what is crosoft remote desktop and crosoft terminal server. And what are the minimum requirements for tools like these to be employed? I know I have asked you lots of questions but I desperately need this thing to work. The actual problem is that my brother's CPU is dead and he cannot buy another one right now. So if I can make this system work, it will be a great surprise for him.

New Layout And Look Of The Forum
Ahsaniqbalkmc replied to manuleka's topic in Websites and Web Designing
When I say the new layout of the forum for the first time, I said: Oh no!, what has Opaque done. There were many reasons for that. The bookmark I had on firefox, for Xisto was actually to my member page. This bookmark didn't work any more. I couldn't find the login button easily. The navigations were not working as they should for example when I clicked on "Open Discussion & Free Web Hosting), I was carried to http://forums.xisto.com/, instead of the home page of forum. In short stuff didn't go well in the first few days. But now when most errors seem to have been fixed and the navigation is corrected, I have started to feel the fun of new look. It is fresher and better looking than the old one. The inerface seems to be a bit faster and most of all, finding content seems to be easier now. So in spite of the early glitches, I think I like the new look and feel of the website. -
So I have, for the first time, seen how dual monitors work. Currently, I am using extended display because I need two or three separate things visible to me at a time. The system works perfect for me and it will increase my efficiency. But a kind of question comes into my mind. Is it possible that we make dual monitors work like two entirely different computers. Let me elaborate on this. Suppose there are two friends in a room and only one CPU. But there are two monitors, two keyboards and two mouses (or mice!) available. Can we make some sort of arrangement for them so that each of them can use the processing power of the same CPU to do their own work separate from one another. I spent some time thinking about the problem but unfortunately, I don't have enough technical skills to get the job done. So I am posting my observations and theories and proposals and etc etc here so that technical people may contribute to it and help me make this possible. I hope there is already some solution available, in shape of a software pack. But if there is any, I don't know about it and somebody had to tell me. When we connect both the monitors to the computer. What options do we have? According to my knowledge, we have the following options Duplicate view Primary only Secondary only Extended View When we go to the extended view, there appears some hope that yes, the system can be developed. When look into the details, the following problems need to be solved. Keyboards and Mice to work separately from one another: Normally, when you connect two or more keyborads to a single computer, hitting capslock on any of them will lightup the capslock light on all the keyboards. This means that the keyboards behave as one single. But in this problem, we need to make the keyboards work separately. The only solution (or idea of solution) that I can think of is making usb settings in such a way that specific USB hubs work with specific applications. I don't know whether it is possible or whether there are other better ways of doing this but this definitely can create a way of solving the problem. For example, suppose we set USB1 to work with firefox and USB2 to work with internet explorer. So that peripherals attached to USB1 will not work with IE and peripherals attached to USB2 will not work with firefox. In this way the first person can attach his keyboard to USB1 and stick to firefox for his browsing needs while the second person will attach his keyboard to USB2 and stick to IE for browsing. In this way they can do their stuff separately from one another without interfering. Marking screen boundaries: It is another major problem which needs to be solved. In normal extended display, the mouse can easily go from one screen to other, and this is necessary for working with extended displays. But in our case, we need to separate the displays in such a way that interference does not occur and cursor on a screen remains on that screen. I cannot think of any solution to this problem, so folks, its time to test your creativity. Because I haven't been able to use such a system, so for now, I can't think of any other issue. Anyone is welcome to contribute to this topic in a constructive way. Thanks!

I think you should have included Xisto in the poll. I am a great fan of this free web host. The servers might not be the fastest but their support is the best. And that is why I like them so much. Recently I had an issue with the Mycents system. I think most of Xisto members had that. I opened a support ticket at xistsupport and wrote them about the issue. Initially the reply was a little late but as always, they did reply to the question in a constructive manner. The actual problem was that renewal of my account was near and I had no mycents. And because the system was not working as well, there was no way I could accumulate mycents. So I was worried that my websites can be taken down for not paying for their service. I wrote to them and guess what they did. They said that because the script is not working now, we will add some credit (enough to cover my fees) to my account and when the script is up, they will deduce it. Thats it. Problem solved. That is what you expect from a good service. So I am definitely voting for Xisto.

I have a number of email accounts with different hosts. Most of the time, it gets very difficult to manage all these accounts and as a result, some of them get neglected. To solve this issue, I decided to go for an email client that can handle multiple accounts for me simultaneously and that can make some sound when a new email arrives (basic stuff I guess).I have heard lot about outlook but I wanted something lighter and simpler. So I went for windows live mail. The program looked good in the beginning. It had good features and setting up accounts was simple too. I was quite happy with it but after using it for a few days, I began to note some flaws. Some of them were really annoying. For example, in the "unread emails" the messages from some of my email accounts appeared twice. While the same message when seen under the specific email, appeared only once. This was quite annoying. Another thing was that the software didn't download messages. It did download the titles and subject but I had to wait for a few seconds before I could see the entire message after clicking on the message. This was also quite annoying for me. Third thing which I didn't like was it showed lot of errors. And the errors would interrupt anything I was doing at that time.As a result, I have now decided to look for some other program. I have installed inbox2. The interface is quite nice and the setting up accounts is very simple too. In fact it is much simpler than than what windows live mail had to offer. The other problem, that is downloading entire message also seems to be solved in this application. The start is very good but I will be able to tell more about this program only after I use it for a few days. Hope it provides what I need from it.

Like it or not, you have to deal with google. Yes, you can't say that GOOGLE IS INTERNET but for a webmaster, life is very hard without the good grace of google.Everyone has reservations about the privacy issues and other SERP issues at google but you can't stop doing business with them, unless you are someone like Mark Zuckerberg. On most occasions, there is more talk than action. Everyone knows that buying and selling links occur often. In fact it occurs in the open. Programs like TEXTLINKADS are doing pretty well making good money. And google can't say that they are unaware of buysellads.com. So you are right that it depends on their mood. When they feel like punishing someone, they do it and make many justifications for it. But still, most webmasters, who depend solely on traffic from google, have to stay safe. They won't like to get involved in something which potentially can cause them loose their traffic from google. They won't care about few extra bucks they can make from selling text links if these extra bucks threat their relation with google. I am not protecting google here. In fact I am raising a point which is against google. Because of their policy, many webmasters cannot do what is perfectly legal for most. So yes google creates problems but it also blesses you with traffic. I said earlier, most webmasters including me will try to stay away from stuff that can frown Big G. But this doesn't mean that we would stop looking for new ways of monetization. But again, we have to stay safe because we largely depend on Google. It seems logical but I have an argument here. You said that you would rather add adjungle ads on your subdomain sites. My point is that for any type of advertisement to work well, the content of the website should be good. If this is true then the next question is that how many good sites (whether TLDs or subdomains) I can develop in a given period of time. Plus if I have put a good amount of effort in something, why wouldn't I go for the best possible way of monetization? But if you are talking about creating lots of automatic submission (wp-robot powered), subdomain blogs and putting adjungle adverts on it, then probably someone would listen to you. Sometimes you seem so good at taunting google. The police thing is good. It fits brilliantly on what google is doing today. Plus, I think you stated the number of updates a bit modestly. I have heard on numerous places that there are about 400 updates a year. So we get more than one update every day. Some of the updates get publicly visible such as the Panda but others are so secret that we don't even know about it. So no one can say for sure, what Big G is doing. I think I should go and check linkworth. May be I can find a new way of monetization.

To be honest, until a few days ago, I was unaware of the existence of Google's affiliate program. I have a healthy information about other affiliate programs out there like Commission junction, click bank, amazon affiliates, but I never heard of Google Affiliate Program.Affiliate marketing is one area I never got. I have tried different programs but none works for me. I have a healthy website to place my affiliate products on, but there is something I don't do right. Maybe the traffic I get is not enough to make me a successful affiliate. But that's another story. For the time, I just need reviews on google affiliate network. So has anyone tried this network before? When I signed-up for the program, it looked a bit restricted. In first place, you have to get your website approved by Google. Then aferwards, you have to get approved by every program you apply to join. The process can take weeks or even more. Moreover there is not enough information about how much you would get when you make a successful sale. Probably I can't get to the information, but in either case it is not a good thing. The information should be available easily to every one. Thus I can say that my first impression of the Google affiliate program was not very good. I was not impressed. I was expecting something of the level of google adsense. However, there is a possibility that I was unable to extract enough information. I have registered my website (which has been approved) but I haven't started displaying their products on my website yet. I am waiting and trying to do some in depth research about the program first. If I cannot make good money with it, I am not going to waste my time on it at all. I would rather go for another program. Can anyone guide me or tell me more about google affiliate program? Any help is appreciated.

These days I am looking to sell some adspace to get more out of my website. The website traffic is not that high to attract websites on individual basis so I always keep my eyes open for posts like this one.I checked out the adjungle website. Unfortunately, the first impression I got was not very good. The website design was not very attractive. It looked rather unprofessional. Then I tried to see some reviews of the program before starting business with them. I searched on google for their reviews and find a lot of places where the program was reviewed. Again, Unfortunately, the reviews were not very good. Everywhere people have written that it is better to do business with other high-end advertisers than small ones like adjungle. I couldn't find any good reviews about them.Still I went through the registration process. I have registered myself but I haven't added the code to my website yet. I want to spend some more time on doing some research about the program. The best way to know more about the program is obviously to ask from you, who has recommended this program. Have you tried this program? How did it work out for you? Most importantly, who do you recommend this program if it sort of violates the google TOS. I don't know whether it actually violates the terms or not; because I was unable to pull enough information on that. But after reading your post, I can get a guess about it being a gray stuff. So can you please provide some more information on this.

I won't recommend firefox's default download manager to anyone. Especially if you download stuff often than not.The biggest issue with this manager is that there is no resume capability (at least for most of the links). I remember firefox's download manager being able to resume my download only once (out of hundreds of files which broke (over different periods of time) because of power failures). So if you expect power failures or if you are on a slow connection and expect the download to complete in many hours, don't use it. Its just a waste of time. If your computer is switched off, and you reopen the dwonload manager, you will see that it shows a broken message to you. When you try to resume it, it will start the download from scratch. So always use another download manager with a good resume capability with firefox.

I have been using Internet Download Manager (IDM) and Download Accelerator Plus (DAP).The good thing about IDM is that it allows you to download anything (except torrent). By anything I mean that even beginners can use it to download youtube videos and files and stuff like that. It displays a button on the top or bottom of every downloadable stuff, so you have to just click that button. In addition i found it super stable. The resume capability is awesome. I rely on this feature alot because here in Pakistan there are lots of power failures and load shedding. I also noted that it's download speed is faster than other download managers on the same connection. Plus its integration with different browsers is great. The interface might not be the best in the business but it is good. One additional feature I like about the IDM is the site grabber. It allows you to download the full website so that you can take it offline and do with it whatever you want to do. This is really a useful feature for me because I enjoy stuff like that.Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) is another great download manager. Though I have only used the free version, which has the annoying advertisement on it, but except that it was good. It wasn't as good as the IDM in terms of speed, stability and resume capability, but it was okay. One thing I found very troublesome with DAP was downloading youtube videos. You have to manually add the url of the video to download it. If there is any simpler way, I don't know about it. So overall, DAP is a good manager but it has some issues. On the other hand I prefer IDM on it big time.I have heard a lot of people talking about the Flash get. I remember one blog mentioning that it is the fastest download manager (which I think is a lie) but because I haven't tested it, I can't say anything for sure. My PC is kind of too slow and won't allow me to install too much software, but when I get this problem solved (maybe by getting a new PC) I will definitely try this one.

Thanks for the complements, but I have a question for you. Is it good fro my website? What was your first guess about the authority of the content on my website? Did the website and the content on it look professional to you? The targets of my website are students. Though I don't only target students of medicine, and other people related to medical field, the level of detail I provide automatically makes such people the primary targets. In a broader sense, I want to target all students who study anatomy in schools at every level. But as the growth of the website proceeds forward, I think I am going more towards targeting qualified medical people, and minor students will find the information highly complex and irrelevant. Currently, it is very difficult for me to address this issue because I hardly extract time out of my timetable to add new content to the website, which is the prime need of the website. I have plans to take steps so that the pages of my website also target minor students who don't require vast details, but currently, it is a secondary issue for me. I know I might be losing great number of traffic because there are more minor students studying anatomy as a minor subject than proper medical students, but it is not possible for me to currently address this issue. I have to add more content to the website to make it a complete description of anatomy. Once I achieve this goal, I would definitely address the issue of expanding the circle of my audiences. Well, I don't add content regularly. Some days I would go on adding up to 10 pages, while on others I won't add a single page. Sometimes week pass before I add a single word to the website. So if your description and explanation is correct, google has classified my website correctly. If google has ranked my website as an informative website which doesn't change too much (which it eventually will become irrespective of my liking), is it good for my website. I think it is, because eventually, my website will become reach a state where I would not add any further content to it, so to keep my expectations in control, I think it is good for me. But I would here ask that why would google drop the pagerank of informative websites which do not change frequently. Google should give more weightage to informative website, not drop their pagerank. That is something I need your comments on. Well all content on my website is original, which I have created by myself. So it is very unlikely that google sees my website as a content farm or one which contains duplicate content. I know that duplicate content isn't going to take me anywhere. I can't succeed by doing illegal stuff and telling lie because the world is not full of fools. People easily detect copied content and once they find you are of no value, they won't return to the website again. I use wordpress and the Google XML sitemaps plugin on it. According to my knowledge, the plugin automatically updates the sitemap.xml once I create new content, and this is one of the main reasons why almost every newly created page of my website is in google's index the day after it is published. Well, I don't get spikes at all. I get a regular number of visitors and the pattern remains the same for every day of the week. I don't get unusual traffic increase or even decrease. So I would definitely ask you is it good to have spikes. If yes, then why? I try to check on the rankings of different pages of my website. I mostly do manual checking on google for the search terms. I do know the fact that google nowadays may display different results to every single user but still one can speculate generally about the rankings. To be honest, I am very happy about the performance of my website in terms of SERPs. A good number of pages of my website rank on the first page of google's results for respective search terms, some of which are worth reasonable traffic. For instance, the primary keyword for my website is "Human Anatomy", and my website ranks between 3-8 for this term. It is a high traffic keyword and I receive a reasonable number of visitors through it. For many other terms the website ranks on the first page of google results, which shows that the website has a good reputation in eyes of big G. However, I would like to state here that the performance is not by far as good in other search engines. I try to rank good on bing and yahoo but I don't know what to do different to get higher rankings on these search engines. More than 80% of my search traffic comes from google alone, which clearly shows that I am not doing well on other search engines. I should get about 20% of my traffic from bing (according to the search market shares both search engines have) but I don't know why my website don't rank well on bing, and what I should do different than SEO FOR GOOGLE to get my website ranked better.

Graphic Designing: Where To Start?
Ahsaniqbalkmc replied to Ahsaniqbalkmc's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
So, I need to hire an artist! It sounds like a good solution, but I don't have the resources to hire someone. I have to do every bit of work myself, at least for the time being. It might be a good solution for me in the future, when I generate enough revenues with my website from which I can give salary to people. But currently, this is not an option. I have to do the work for myself. Maybe I can gain knowledge about how to become a better artist. In my opinion, everyone is an artist (as everyone can do creative stuff) but it's just the matter of some people being better than others. So I think I should sharpen the my skills to fulfill my needs. Although, I am not bad at drawing pictures, but this is only true when drawing on paper with a pencil. I am quite good at drying anatomy diagrams, but again, only on paper with a pencil. On a computer, it is completely a different story. I find it very hard to draw on computer with my mouse. I know that after learning about the tools to draw on a computer screen, and how to optimally use them, I can definitely improve my drawing skills on a computer screen. I may also need to improve my basic drawing skills, but I can know it only after I become capable of using a graphic software optimally. If I could create diagrams on computer comparable to those I create on a paper with a pencil, I would be more than happy about it. One additional option with me is that I create diagrams on paper and then scan them so that a digital image of them is available to be put on my website. But according to my experience, the scans don't look very professional (at least the scans of the scanner I own) and they won't give a great impression to my visitors. If I could create the same drawing on adobe photoshop or GIMP or some other software, it would look much nicer and much professional. But for this to happen, I need to learn how to optimally use the software, which unfortunately I don't. If someone, who creates graphics regularly can give me some tips, I would get something to start on. For now, I even don't know which software to go for, and which one would be better for saving me time. Consequently, I can't start doing anything, until I get confident about the software I choose to invest my time in. So any help is appreciable. -
So here I am trying to learn to create visually appealing graphics, but I don't know where to start. I have tried to find the best graphic designing software suited to me. Almost every one, related to the concept, takes two names: GIMP and Photoshop. I have quite a bit experience with photoshop. I have been using it for editing some images, mainly cropping and other very basic stuff, however, I don't know the real power of it. On the other hand I have never used GIMP.The problem with me is that I need to create visually appealing graphics for my Human Anatomy website. Because the graphics will be about anatomy of human body, they can't be cartoony and should be very realistic. They should feel like they are explaining the structure of a human body and not a cartoon. I have never created such quality graphics so I have no experience how this stuff is done. I have been creating some logos, backgrounds and other basic stuff, but never high quality graphics, so here I am to ask you people where to start.I am willing to buy any software, and any book for this purpose. What I want to achieve is real quick creation. I don't want to waste days on one single graphic. One hour per image would be fine, but I don't know what to do to achieve this level of expertise. I know it is perfectly possible because I don't have to waste my time on thinking and creating new stuff. I have all sorts of refrences and guides and images available to me from which I can quickly gather the details and convert them to graphics. Thus the time wasted in thinking about creativity and all that would be saved. All the time would be put in the actual creation of the graphic, and I think one hour should be sufficient for it.So where should I start?

Yesterday, when I checked my email, I found a newsletter sent to me by webpronews. I like their news letters, because they are very informative and I read almost all of them. This time the news letter was about a new algorithm update from google, which according to webpronews, might be a good news for webmasters affected by panda. The newsletter itself was not of much interest for me, because my website is not among those who were affected by the notorious panda update from google. In fact, I neither saw a rise nor a decline in the traffic I receive from google, so the topic itself was of little interest for me. However, when I read the news letter, I was really impressed by the way the webpronews put the information together. I liked the story they referred to in the newsletter so I thought I would share it with you people here. The story was about the Daniweb forum. Reportedly, daniweb.com was among the top 100 websites which were classified as collateral damage in Google's war against content farms. Lot of websites have written about them that they didn't deserve to be affected by the panda update. Few months ago, I watched an interview of "Dani", the creator of the website. In that interview, she clearly said that all of their content is 100% original and no one by no means can classify them as content farm. She stated that after the panda update, the website is facing a 50% drop in the search traffic from the US. She said that although she is absolutely clear about her site being falsely affected by the update, she would still try to make some changes to make big G happy, so that it start loving her website again. After the recent update, which google's officials classify as a minor update (one of the 500 minor post panda updates scheduled for this year), the daniweb.com has not only restored to the pre panda traffic stats for US but has also exceeded the mark for some other countries. According to daniweb.com, they haven't made any significant changes lately, which could potentially cause such a drastic improvement. And as the improvement is visible directly after the mentioned post panda algo update, most likely this update is behind it. So finally, daniweb's voice has been heard and they are reinstated to their original position. In contrast to daniweb.com, other websites which were also classified as a collateral damage by many, may not be as lucky. There is a great chance that many of them wouldn't have seen such recovery in terms of their search traffic, but at least the silver lining in the dark cloud has become visible. This update clearly shows that Google has realized that panda was not as sophisticated as such a major update should be and that they need to make some changes to make user experience better. I personally think that google is giving too much attention to its competition with facebook lately and may have made some wrong moves in the process. Their supreme authority is search (not social media) and they should be more concerned about user experience on their search engine (not social media). Yes, moving to the social side is a good move but not quickly after making such major updates to their search.Although google repeatedly says that according to their data, search relevancy has increased by some percentage points (I don't remember the exact value) but many users (including myself) have issues with the search. Sometimes (around once for every 10 different searches), I get more non relevant results than relevant ones. In addition, recently I repeatedly see "Shopping Results" for my queries, which I don't like at all. I don't know about others, but I don't like such stuff. Google should recognize the difference between queries meant for search and those meant for shopping. They are mixing their results too much.
