  1. I guess I misunderstood your previous post....... my bad!By the way one thing I want to add here is that all of the effects of emotions on different parts of body are mediated by the brain in such a way that the result is more likely to be beneficial than harmful. For instance, when you see something fearful, the brain activates the sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system. As a result, the body is prepared for the "Fight or Flight" response. The changes in the body because of this sympathetic stimulation include increase of blood pressure (to provide extra nutrients to various organs of body), increase in diameter of trachea and bronchi (so that increased amount of air/oxygen can go into the lungs and thence to the blood), relaxation of pupils (to enhance vision), vasodilation of arteries supplying the skeletal muscles (so that your muscles can work harder) etc etc.But the similar changes can be harmful in certain conditions for instance the same sympathetic stimulation as discussed above can be fatal for heart patients or patients with atherosclerosis.
  2. First of all, you need to decide how much you want to learn. Let me elaborate this. As a personal or small business website developer, you would need to develop the whole website by yourself and for this purpose you won't be able to become an expert in all of the different languages required to create and maintain a website. So what you would do is learn the basics of all the different languages to the extent that you can make and maintain a basic website with reasonable functionality. On the other hand, if you "are"/"want to be" a member of professional web development team and your area of expertise is javascript, then you probably need to get into very details of the language. This would require a different approach than learning only the basics. So you need to decide first.Once you have decided, you can google for various books and tutorial as they are very easy to find and follow. And the one golden rule of learning all computer languages is "Practice, Practice and Practice". Believe me, there is no alternative to this.
  3. @ritu, I just gave a superficial look to the article you linked to ( I couldn't give it much time::: sorry for that).. But based on my studies as a medical student, I can tell you one simple thing. All emotions, no matter what kind, are related directly to your brain. The effects of emotions on other sytems/organs of body are secondary effects produced because of activation/inhibition of some parts of brain and release/cessation to release of certain hormones (which is also controlled by brain). So the end result is that all effects produced by emotional stimulation are because of your brain. For example, the increase in heart beat at times of stress isn't because stress directly causes the heart to beat faster. It is because the stress causes the brain to enhance the activity of sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system and one of the many effects of this increased activity is tachcardia (faster heart beat).I hope you got my point.
  4. Well, I think I might also like to stick to my keyboard and mouse for a couple of years to come. Unless, there is some great technological breakout resulting in invention of some product which can increase my efficiency of work. One of the reasons I want to stick to my keyboard is that I just recently got myself used to it. An year back, I couldn't even type at 15 wpm. But now I am typing at about 60 wpm. And for those who can't type at such speeds, believe me its so much fun. What's more important is that it enhances your efficieny, productivity and creativity to a huge extent because you are not afraid of erasing and writing again and again. And you would also love the sound of keys getting hammered at a blazing speed. Its just so much fun.
  5. I opened a ticket about 5 days ago requesting to increase the memory allocated to php, as I was seeing an error generated due to low memory. Normally, you would get a reply on the second or third day of opening a ticket but this time its strange. I haven't got any reply yet. What's even more strange is that I am not even seeing the ticket in the support section of my Xisto - Support account. I have received the email 5 days ago saying that they have received my ticket and they would answer it soon. But other than that there is not footprint of that support ticket. The day before yesterday, I opened another ticket asking them why they haven't answered my support ticket (providing the ticket id of my first support ticket) but guess what.... they haven't answered this one as well.I am having serious trouble with my website because of this memory issue and I want it to be resolved because I can't work with it. So @yordan, please do something about it.
  6. I have had my website hosted with Xisto for over two years now. The plan is a shared hosting plan, which I have no complaints about. But recently I ran into a problem that made my wonder the structure of shared hosting and allaction of resources to various hosted websites. The exact problem is that I am getting this strange error in the admin section of my wordrpress based website when I try to view all the pages I have created. Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4096 bytes) in /home/mananato/public_html/wp-includes/cache.php on line 505 I did some research about the issue and about the possible solutions for it. What I came to know is that I am getting this error because the memory allocated to my website is not enough any more and I need to increase it to a reasonable value. And to solve this error, I need to increase the memory allocated to php that my website uses. This thing has made me think about a lot of questions like: How is memory allocated to different services in a shared hosting scenario? Does a shared hosting scenario have a single or multiple installs of required tools like php, mysql? Whether the installation of tools is single or multiple, how are the resources of the server distributed? What are the effects of increasing the resources to a service on other services hosted on the same shared server? And many more....... So I decided to open a topic about it and place it in the "Internet and Websites" category so that it becomes a general issue that is not related to my website or Xisto. Any productive addition to the topic is appreciated.

    Libreoffice

The biggest reason I don't like portable apps (or stand alone apps for that matter) on my PC is the inability to open files directly. I mean to say that without the proper thing installed on my computer, I wont be able to open file.docx by double clicking on it. I will have to open the standalone software first and the open the file from there which is kind of a pain for me. There are many other reasons as well but this is the major one.

This might be a little off-topic, but as the discussion is going towards portable apps, I thought, I would contribute. My opinion of portable apps is that they should be used only as portable. I mean they are good for people who move around to different computers. They become independant of what is available on the system and what is not. And I guess this is the actual reason why portable apps are developed. In contrast, on my personal computer where I spend about 10 hours daily, it is better to have installed the full thing. The reason is that I don't like my USB Flash plugged in all the time and not available for moving data. And, there is less trouble with files and crashes etc when you have the full thing installed on your system.
  9. I have been trying to move to Ubuntu from microsoft windows 7 but there are a few glitches that are restricting me to do so. One of the most important one is power consumption. As I have mentioned in another thread, I have experienced that ubuntu lasts for about half the time windows 7 lasts and this is a huge issue for me as I face lots of power failures. With ubuntu 11.10, I have used laptop-mode-tools with some success but I haven't been able to make them work with ubuntu 12.04.So anyone knows about some power saver tools or configurations that would make my ubunutu last longer on battery power.?
  10. I installed ubuntu 12.04 as soon as I got informed that there is a new version of ubuntu LTS available. The main purpose of this installation was to play with ubuntu and get myself familiar with the linux ecosystem. So I was making a lot of experiments and editing a lot of files. But fortunately for me, I almost always knew what I was doing. On my windows machine, I have connectify that makes my laptop act as a virtual router so that I can connect my mobile phone through the wifi and use the internet connection of the DSL cable to my laptop. I wanted to create a similar setup on the Ubuntu. I searched online for solutions and found that linux has built in support to create ad-hoc networks. Unfortunately, my phone is an android phone and it doesn't detect ad-hoc networks. So I continued my research. Then I found that there is an application named "hostapd" that acts the same as "connectify" on windows. So I installed it and made the configurations necessary for it. But it didn't work. Then I searched online for solutions and found somewhere that I need to have a DHCP server installed in order for it to work so I installed a dhcp server (apt-get install dhcp3-server) without any luck. Then I searched more and found some tutorial that had used "firestarter" to create a similar wifi connection. I followd the tutorial and edited my network configuration file (I don't exactly remember the name and address of the file). After that when I restarted my computer, I got a message on the boot up screen "waiting for network to start" or something like that, Then another message saying "Waiting 60 more seconds for the network to start" and then finally, "Starting without network".After that my internet connection is not working. I tried the ubuntu recovery mode and selected "start network" from there but all in vain. So now i see that my network has been stated as "UNMANAGED NETWORK" and I can't connect to it.Is there any solution to the problem?
  11. I installed ubuntu 12.04 and straight away I found that it had solved some of the issues I was having with the ubuntu 11.10. The most irritating of those issues were multi-monitor setup and display brightness control. So ubuntu 12.04 made me take one step further towards shifting from Windows to Linux. One issues that is not addressed yet in ubuntu 12.04 is power usage for laptops. I have witnessed that Ubuntu consumes much more power (and thus the batter last for very short period of time) as compared to windows 7. The difference is alsmost 50%, that is ubuntu lasts only 50% of the time windows 7 lasts on battery. This is a huge issue for me as I face lots of power failures.I have tried laptop-mode-tools but they haven't been very productive yet. So I am trying to get this issue solved and when I get my ubuntu to last longer on battery, I think I would be able to spend more time on ubuntu that I spend now on windows 7.I will open a few threads discussing the problems that I am currently having with the ubuntu 12.04 that are making me stay with windows 7. And as soon as I figure out how to solve them, I think I would be ready to move on to the Linux Ecosystem.
  12. I am trying to move on to Linux universe but there are a few problems that are restricting me to do so for the time being. It is not that I don't like windows 7 or I have problems troubleshooting with it. I can do almost anything (allowed) I want with it and I can troubleshoot almost every problem. The thing is that I want something different and something more open that would allow me to do anything. Plus I am trying to get into software development stuff and for this I would have to learn how to operate a linux OS as this would help me understand how operating systems and different softwares work. The most important thing is that Linux would be virus free. This would be a huge advantage as I have to deal with USB stick on daily basis that are full of malware.Windows 8 might be brilliant, (I haven't checked it yet) but I think I won't shift to it as I have a stronger urge to shift to Linux ecosystem.
  13. I am more interested in knowing the type of internet connection that would be required to run my own server. I can imagine the type of environment and computers required for this purpose but I don't know much about the internet connection. The normal internet connection that I use for my Personal Computer is a 1mb DSL connection. It is called a 1mb DSL connection (I don't know why) but it is connection at 100mbps and the download speed is 100kbps. The upload speed it about 15kbps.My guess is that this type of connection would be a bit too slow for a hosting a website that gets about 5000 pageviews a day. So to host such a website, what type of connection would be required.??
  14. Well, that is a huge list indeed. I wonder, what is the purpose of all those different languages. I mean almost all tasks that a programmer needs to do can be done is 3 or 4 languages at most so what is the purpose of all those languages. The most likely guess is that each one of them is developed for specific environments. And although same tasks can be performed in other languages, it would be easier to do the tasks in the languages designed specifically for the environment.A few days ago, I was researching online for some information on where to start programming. I do know some web based languages like HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, Javascript and I also have slight experience with basic languages like Gw-basic. I wanted to get into to software designing the main purpose of which was to understand how softwares and computer operating systems work. So my research showed me that I should start with python and then follow onto learning C based languages, which are the most important tool in software designing.I have started working on python and uptill now, it is coming very easy on me. I just have to keep the syntax in mind and learn the specific words used for different command. The sense of its working is easy to understand, probably because I have some experience with PHP. So after I get enough experience with Python, I am planning on to move to C based languages, which are told to be very difficult to learn and understand.
  15. I am from Pakistan. And believe me or not, but power and electricity system is really really bad here in the present.
  16. Unfortunately I was not successful and as I stated earlier, I gave on the setup. I shifted my server to my host machine and then started my work directly on that. I will definitely give it a try sooner or later just to know how windows-linux networking and linux servers work.
  17. I don't think sources that utilize solar energy are developed enough to be used for things such as charging a laptop. They might be working very well in experimental conditions and research facilities but for a mass scale use, they don't have that kind of presence and ease of access. So it would be better to invest in something other than solar energy, at least for the time being.UPS is a good investment, but as it is mentioned in another post, why would anyone bother to buy a ups when the laptop's own battery is functional and providing enough backup.
  18. In my experience, all proper sized desktop computers (not the minis) are quite rigid. They tend to tolerate physical as well as power stresses. For instance, my old p4 used to be extremely stable before breaking down. I had enabled to "auto power on" feature in the bios of that Dell optiplex system and this meant that it was turned on all the time. The primary reason for this was that I used to download quite a lot of stuff and because of frequent power failures, I had to turn on my pc manually every now and then. Though this feature was quite handy for me, but it was also very stressful for the hardware. And possibly because of such harsh use, I had frequent complaint of hard disk failure but nothing except that for many years. Well, summer in my area is also very hot; ranging between 40 and 50 degrees celsius. But I think that these temperatures are not the ones inside houses or rooms. Even with fan off, you are very unlikely to get 45 or 50 degrees celsius inside a properly built house. In my opinion, these temperatures range from 35-40 degrees. Although these are still very high temperatures, but at least they are better than the 45 or 50 degrees. From my experience, I can tell that desktops can tolerate higher temperatures than laptops before the temperature starts to affect the performance of the machine. It means that laptops tend to get slower at lower temperatures as compared to desktops. But laptops have numerous other advantages and this disadvantage can be overlooked. There is no reason why we cannot use our laptops as desktop replacements. I mean there is always an option available to fix your laptop on your table and to use the option of moving it around as a luxury. This is how I use my laptop. In fact, the laptop saves precious space on your desk as well, and the slight decrease in performance can be overlooked if you have decent configuration laptop. Most people in the west have a desktop for their home/office use and a laptop for portability. I say, why not have a laptop for home/office use and another laptop for portability. It might sound strange but it is perfectly practical and worthy.
  19. I think ubuntu is quite elegant as well. For me visual elegance is a secondary thing. I need the extra bit of performance and reliability and I can trade them for visual effects. So for me ubuntu is the best deal.
  20. @yordan, it is sorry to hear that your old friend died on you after serving you for 10 years. And it is also nice of you to think of donating the remaining stuff so that they can be used for good. However, if I were you, and I really had the need for another system, I would have bought another motherboard and put all the remaining components in that. But this is a need based scenario and a better option is always to go for newer technology even if you have to pay extra money. And for the last part, I should say that use of blower should be done with great care as it has the potential to damage laptop components which are relatively fragile.
  21. I think the sources you mentioned need a lot of research to be used on a commercial scale. On the other hand, you have forgotten the most talked about energy source these days: the solar energy. I think there is reasonable research going on in this field, and we see many applications of this form of energy in our daily lives. What we need to make sure is that we should put more efforts in increasing its efficiency and application so that it can be used on a commercial scale and some day, it would be able to replace the energy coming from fossil fuels. From one point of view, making good use of the solar energy is of survival value for human population as we all know that fossil fuels are not going to last forever. Some day, we have to live without them, and then the most reliable source of energy, at least in some parts of the world will be the solar energy. So concentrating our efforts in this form of energy would mean that we want to survive even after fossil fuels are gone.
  22. I think that the name of the game should correctly exhibit what the game is going to be. So in order to get a good name for your game, you need to first think about its story and gameplay and then choose a relative name.
  23. That 3d printer technology seems really awesome and appears to be the next big thing in human development after computers. We cannot even imagine how much change it can bring in the way we humans live. It could simply change the entire life style and business model of today, as most businesses today are concerned with production and supply. These sectors will be affected the most because as @quatrux mentioned, all you need would be a model that would most likely be in software form. For such model, there would be no need for a physical supply chain and they could be easily got through the internet. The production sector will be affected more than the supply sector as there will still be need of getting the raw materials. But there will be no need of mass production of something because everyone would then be able to produce stuff according to his likings. But that is future and no one has seen it yet. We will have to wait and see what happens in the next 50 or so years to this world.
  24. It might be a bit irrelevant here but I think it would help many laptop users who read this post.My laptop was running quite hot from sometime. One day, it even shut down because of over heating, when I was playing dirt 2 on it. So it made me think seriously about the overheating issue. I searched for some information from here and there and the most probable thing that came to my mind was that there is something wrong with the heat sink. So I decided to open my laptop's back and see what is happening inside. Though I failed to open my laptop, but the solution I applied did work. The solution was blowing high speed air through the vents of the laptop. I used a normal blower for this purpose and I visually saw dust coming out of my laptop. So most probably, there was dirt and dust clogged in the heat sink and it made it nearly impossible for the sink to stay cool. After blowing high speed air through the vents, my laptop is running significantly cooler and the fan noise is reduced to the extent that I don't even notice it now. The performance has also increased to some extent. So all those laptop users who are dealing with over heating and fan noise, should consider this solution as it might easily solve their problems.
