Video Games Are A Complete Waste Of Time, Face It!

Recommended Posts

I love playing video games. Video games haven't taken away from my social life at all, I often play against my friends and other people online. It's actually pretty fun when you have nothing to do, hell even when you do have something to do it's fun. But there is a limit as to how much I play, I usually just play on school nights when I have no homework.

I don't play video games that often, and I don't think they are a waste of time. Games can get your mind off reality for abit. Sometimes, you just want to get away from reality, and just fall into a small fantasy world. There's nothing wrong with that sometimes. Also, the games I have are not shoot-em-ups or super-violent games. I usually have games where you have to think and where you have to solve puzzles and such. But, why just say that video games are a waste of time? Movies are too.So is going on the computer. So what? People can choose how they use their free time. But, as always, this is just my opinion.

C'mon face it, video games are a complete waste of your time!

How can you say that while you are "wasting time" posting on a message board.

I think "wasting your time" on anything (in moderation) can be healthy, so long as that thing is not self-destructive.

i guess, im not a game fanatic! so for me, its a waste of time, cause i might be as well doing other things. but for many game fanatics out there, its not... cause they're enjoying it! maybe the thing is its not a waste of time when you're enjoying what you do, no matter what it is! but when you're bored and all...but still do your thing... that could be a waste of time....if you know your priorities... and do things with control... then you're not wasting anything! =) its just a matter of budgeting your time! and doing what you love to do! aight? lolz! i dunno...

I used to think that video games were a waste of time too till I started playing some. I was afraid of becoming addicted to them but Im not. My boys use PS2, game boy etc but I monitor what they play to a certain extent, they are 14 and 15. When they were younger I was very strict with them, you have to be. Video games like, boards games etc are a distraction from the real world. A lot of games, especially puzzle and trivia ones are good for the brain. They use parts of our brain that we dont use other wise. Some games are absolute rubbish but to each their own. Its entertainment. Ive seen some of the shoot em up games, my brother plays those. Would make some grannys have a heart attack lol. If you get something out of it play them, If you dont dont, but one should at least give them a chance.

C'mon face it, video games are a complete waste of your time! Every time you turn on your console you should be asking yourself "Is there something better I should be doing with my time... like reading a good book... or watching a good movie... or flirting with a beautiful girl? Do I get anything out of this, does this make me a better person?"

Games drives the modern world. Video games triggers your brain to think critically. It is a way to train your strategic part of the brain without something boring like chess. Video game is now essential for kids and teenagers.

There is something very important to learn from this discussion. It is very true that video games (including things like web surfing) are a high opportunity cost. Meaning - if you're doing these things, you're giving up time that you could use much more wisely. From virtually all console and online games, there is absolutely no advantage, other than perhaps getting a young person into a gun-happy character and enlisting in the military. When someone is sitting on their butt for hours upon hours a day and through the week, there is 1) no exercize and 2) no useful life knowledge will be gained. When young people eventually grow up (if they ever do), they will look back on all of the life they'd spent on something without benefit. Such is the point of view of the first quote above.

From the second quote, their is also a point. Most young people don't have the patience for a book or a game of chess. But video games are not a good substitute! "The strategic part of the brain" does not grow so much as you might think by playing video games. Of course, you do have to think and solve problems from some games, but not in a way a graet as you would by playing chess. Books are also very important because they will provide knowledge (if you're reading the right ones). Knowledge is an extreemly important part of human life, in fact, as we all know, it's our brains that make us such special creatures. So it should be excersized!

Of course, there's no way to say that video games are all that bad. What's important is to be MODERATE. In other words, don't waste your life away by spending all your time in front of a glowing screen. People want to rlax and have fun, that's important too. But it's at least equally important to preper yourself for the future, because video games are much different than the real world.

Some videogames teach people stratergy and people can actually get attached to the characters. Take the FF series. People can react the same way as the characters do. To beat bosses you need to know stratergy, to know which materia to equip to each person, which GF's to junction.... There's nothing wrong with video games

Video games isn't a waste of time, it helps people relieve their stress. Video games entertain us and there's nothing wrong with that. Reading a book is fine, and yes, it helps your brain and stuff, but sometimes you just can't help yourself but to wonder what it's really like to be in the book...erm...yeah...

I have met people in my area that I play with, met people at school I didnt know, that I ran into online. And you know what I enjoy best.......... Boobs, the guy game which is immature and against morals (not mine!) but I get to play this trivia game, learn some things and get to see boobs at the end of the round. So you go read your novels and run a marathon, Imma sit here get fat and eat and all day.

I know this is an old thread, so there's probably no one here to argue it but I've read some of the things being said and I think I'll defend the side that says video games aren't a complete waste of time. The main reason why I declare this is because of the grouping of the term "video games." By doing this you are being ignorant of the fact that video games vary between genres as much as books. You can say that a golfing video game is the same as a first person shooter, that's the same as saying that a nonfiction novel written by a previous President is the same as a porn magazine. Believe it or not, there are games that increase visual memory and other such abilities. The old people of Japan are having their latest craze over a mind exercise video game that would help individuals improve their memory and increase immunity to alzhiemer's disease. There are also games that increase physical abilities, namely DDR (Dance Dance Revolution).I will not disagree with the fact that some games are a complete waste of time. But then there are also movies, books, theatrical plays, whatever that are a complete waste of time. No matter how classic and ingenius Shakespeare is, his plays are a bit old and overdue. If our teachers cared to allow us to read a translated version rather than the original, the book might have been a bit more bareable. Back to the subject of games. Some claim that video games are not a good substitution for novels. Well, it just may be an alternative source for individuals who are unable to sit through reading a book. People learn different ways, some more visually than others. You cannot force someone to learn or experience something another way. I agree that movies can be an alternative source to playing a video game but video games are just movies but you can put yourself in the position of the main character or whatever character you play in order to create your own story. The most valuable portion of a game isn't it's images really, but it's game play and it's ability to allow an individual to experience the situation. You can always be told what to do, but would you really understand the concept of gravity for example than watching something fall to the floor? Someone can try their best to explain what green and red are to a color blind person but wouldn't it be better for them to actually see the colors? Also, video games may be a source to improving world relations by increasing world awareness. Historical games that may have been no more than a sword hack slashing game have allowed children to arrive at school with the ability to map out the Roman Empire. And there are games that are creating awareness and peace between some Palestinians and Israelies.Yes, there are games that are a waste of time BUT BY NO MEANS ARE ALL VIDEO GAMES A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME, FACE IT!
