Ps3's Price Tag! Will it drive customers away?

Recommended Posts

ps3 crashes aswell so it's just a cheap way of getting more money out of the public when some of the stuff in it is just as glitchy as a 360, look it up in google type in "e3 ps3 crashes" and you will see, who would pay nigh on $600 for a ps3 when the wii and the 360 are only about $400 and sony is lying about some of the stuff inside it atleast microsoft had the guts too admit some of it's trailers weren't in game footage aswell same with nintendo, sony said at e3 that all the videos they showed were in game footage.

I doubt they will, that is the official price and i doubt that in the near futre the price will drop, i think that it will be a good year and a half - two years before we get a price drop simply because of the sheer price that the console costs to manufactor, the blu-ray drive on its own is costing sony $300, thats more than half of the cost of the xbox 360.

If everyone waits for the price to come down, how many are actually going to be sold in the end? I'm sure there are several people saving up for it now, but it's pretty easy to spend at least $1000 at once that way - just a PS3 and 8 games will do it. Me, I'm waiting for the Nintendo Wii, being a huge Nintendo fan.

Altrough the chances that I will not be buying a playstation 3 are pretty high (I'm not really into console gaming that much, pc gaming all the way!) I hope the price won't be that high, because many people will be spending all their money on consoles like this and that is just sorry for them! :)

If you want to just play games, the PlayStation 3 is going to be a much cheaper option than getting the equivalent computer hardware. Just think of the box you could put together with the cost of a PlayStation 3. Sure it has more versatility, but in terms of raw hardware power, it's just not going to match. I'm not saying I like the pricetag, but I guess there is some reason behind it. I doubt I'm willing to spend that sort of money upfront for a console though, especially seeing their sharp depreciation in value, and the fact I don't need to always play the latest and greatest games. Here's to hoping that the prices of Nintendo's Wii and the Xbox 360 force Sony to compromise soon after launch to remain competitive in the market. That way, some more of us may be able to afford their offering.

I dont think that the release of Halo3 will hurt sonys sales at all. I just think that if you had the Idea of buying the playstation 3 and saved up all the cash, you arent going to just buy halo and then an xbox and forget about all the money you have been saving for who knows how long.I would probably get a Playstion 3 when the price comes down, I just love the Final Fantasy Rpg games too much, but for now I am definitely getting the Nintendo Wii, although its name sounds kind of stupid now, but its going to be fun and cheap.

well im willing to pay around 200-300 bucks for a system... but thats cause im a casual consol gammer i normaly play the computer more...anyways i think its a ripoff for 600 bucks... so idk... i dont think its gunna go so well and sony will lower its prices after the hardcore gammers get it...

Haha, Sony. First they promise all these features with a lower price tag. Then they LOSE most of the features and UP the price tag. Nice logic Sony, I'm sure the consumers won't mind.

I agree that ps3 hardware as a computer is expensive but from the screenshots and real game footage of the ps3 the graphics are the same as the xbox 360. PS3 is getting all this praise for being the most powerful console ever but any console manufactorer could put loads of high performence hardware in and claim the title of highest power console. I would only praise sony if they had all this high power hardware but A) still had a cheapish pricetag :) if the graphics were revolutionary to all other consoles. Both of these though have not been accomplished by sony, i think of it as a farrari which you just bought insted of a ford escort but the farrari has a speed and rev limitor on so it drives like a ford escort

There is no way I will buy a PS3 if it is anything over $500. What I'm going to do is wait until the PS3 comes out and by that time, the XBOX 360 will drop in price to stick it to sony. Then the 360 will be cheap so why not just pick that up and play with that? Then wait for the PS3 to come down in price. I think the play station is going to die if PS3 isn't successful... look at nintendo, sega, and others.

The fact is however that there are plenty of people out there who will buy it at launch for this rediculous price (or more on eBay) just becuase it is new and they have to have the latest. I know personally I will get a Playstation 3 eventually, but realisticly I would expect to wait at least 1 year and a half after launch untill I will even consider picking on up. And anyway there will not be that many games worth playing for at least that time anyway (the last time I checked there were 6 confirmed launch titles).

it is important to measure the value of the system by what it can do and also by how much Sony will be losing on each one, which given the expense of the Cell and BluRay will be quite large, factoring into this the mounting debts Sony has incured and i wouldn't expect to see a drop in price anytime soon.

The main question however is can Sony still succeed, well as I said before people will still buy the system (probably not that many casual gamers or undecided people to begin with, but the diehard gamers and Sony fanboys will). The success of any games console still lies with its third party support (an factory which has arguable beed responsible for the success of the PS1 and the PS2, and where Sony are looking to still stay strong, with the recent reports of 10,000 hardware complete devkits being shipped). The future may not be too bleak for Sony what with Metal Gear Solid (a game which Hideo Kojima has said to be "Impossible" on an xbox 360) and Final Fantasy XII (probably the best example of a system seller that Sony has) on the horizon, sure losing Grand Theft Auto exclusivity will hurt this area for Sony.

Overall I expect that the price tag will not be too much of an issue once the system has been out there for a while, but it will initially issolate the casual gamers and Sony will imo want to be looking at a price drop sooner rather than later (unless 'Krazy' Ken Kutaragi has his way)

Sony is definetely pushing their luck. Not a lot of people would be willing to pay that much for the system AND the games together. Sure, maybe like one or two, or maybe even three games for the average gamer. But that's probably the most Sony'll get.

If anyone has seen the "poll of the day" yesterday on http://www.gamefaqs.com/ , then they'll know what the majority of the people think. They asked if people will pre-order the Playstation 3, and the majority (about 40%) said they didn't want a playstation 3. Some said they weren't sure. Only about 10% said they'll pre order it. It was sad looking at the results and seeing the fall of Sony.
