  1. The problem is because of an embargo rather than communalism. Firms are prohibited from doing business in certain nations. The political problems caused by the government of the country is to blame and the average Joe who is a civilian of the country with no political activites whatsoever become a victim of the problem. For purchases, a lot of people just buy whatever they want when on a trip to the U.S. or to Dubai because they cannot get what they want in their own countries but this isn't something that manufacturers or dealers are concerned about because it falls within legal business practices - the deal was made in a place where it was permitted and that was where the delivery/exchange took place.
  2. When you mentioned about the four-wheeler, I assumed that you meant you got your second four-wheel drive vehicle in the family. When you mentioned that Arctic Cat, that's when I realized that you were referring to a quad-bike or a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle. Quad bikes are not street-legal, but if you own a large farm, you can get around with one of those. One of the things that you can do with the Arctic Cat is to get a full cab enclosure to keep yourself out of the rain and snow. Mammoth designs or Mammoth Skins used to sell one of those and you can probably still find one of them online on eBay. Think of it as a soft top except that you get it to go all around, weather proofing your ATV. Perhaps you can stick tints onto the sides to keep the sun away too... all that you are short of is air conditioning :-D
  3. Just about every firm finds it easier to stick to a current supplier than to change to another supplier. That makes me wonder - about a decade ago, Peugeot was the preferred supplier of diesel engine among automotive manufacturers in India. If they had played their cards right and invested enough in refreshing their diesel engine, they would have their diesel engine in roughly half of all the diesel-engine powered cars in India today. However, what happened is that the diesel engine being offered by Peugeot was under-powered and automobile manufacturers looked for alternatives. Hyundai picked Detroit Diesel as its supplier of diesel engines whereas Tata Motors and Maruti-Suzuki decided to switch to Fiat. Right now, about a half of all diesel-powered cars on Indian roads are powered by Fiat engines (either manufactured under license from Fiat or sourced from Fiat). The 1.4L Fiat engine is used by Maruti-Suzuki in all of its diesel vehicles from the Swift and Ritz hatchbacks to the Ertiga MUV and the SX4 sedan. Considering that Maruti-Suzuki has the largest share in the Indian automobile market, that's a whole lot of sales/royalty for Fiat right there. Add to it the sales of Tata, which is among the top 5, if not the top 3, and you right away have a figure that puts Fiat technology under the hood of over half of all Indian diesel cars on the road today. We don't know if Peugeot's plans to re-enter the Indian market with its own vehicles will materialize but at this point, Peugeot lost its place and is nowhere to be seen, easily displaced by Fiat in under a decade.
  4. I wonder why more people in India don't use waste vegetable oil as a fuel source. Sure, there is the cost of de-carbonization but that is negligible when compared to the amount that they can save on fuel. Also, I don't really know why we ought to buy herbal fuel. We can turn corn produce into alcohol, and we can use vegetable oil or other biodiesel crops. Surely that would help in reducing our dependence on oil while staying carbon neutral.
  5. In Dubai, I noticed that there's a Korean car, the Oullim Spirra, that sells for a pretty high premium. It does defy the norm because generally Korean cars that are imported into the country are the low-value vehicles that people look down upon - people get what they pay for and when they pay for economy cars, the cost-cutting will be evident. The Oullim Spirra, on the other hand, costs roughly one hundred thousand dollars and has a 2.7 litre engine with rear wheel drive mated to a six speed manual transmission. The engine generates five hundred horse power and can do a 0-100 kmph in 3.5 seconds. I believe an all-wheel drive would help in better getting that power to the wheels, though having the wheels spin is one way you can make your presence known in a neighbourhood. The styling on the front of the car seems very retro with the flat headlights (I know I've seen them on another car, but I can't seem to recall it right now). The corrugated rear plate and the two metallic bands add character to the rear of this car, though I think the bands give it the look of a lobster's antennae (do you ever wonder why people make the rear of the cars look like a face whereas they should be focused on doing it to the front of the car?).
  6. India currently has serious electrical power shortage problems and it seems unlikely that something that people can recharge at home will do any good. Some towns go about eight hours without electricity in a day, though if you are fortunate enough to live in an area where a lot of other political and other influential folk reside, you get a to hour power cut. There are some villages that get only two hours of electricity a day and farmers use it to run the water pumps at their fields. There are electric scooters, electric motorcycles, and electric cars available in India. The electric scooters and electric motorcycles have not really sold in significant numbers, but you just may see the G-Whiz (sold in India as the Reva) occasionally. The idea behind the Reva was to take advantage of the electric car subsidy provided by the government to offer a car that costs as much as the cheapest petrol-powered car in the country, the Maruti 800 (the Tata Nano has now taken its place as the cheapest petrol-powered car). However, by the time the Reva entered into production, the subsidy offered by the government for electric vehicles was withdrawn and the price of the Reva electric car almost doubled. It was no longer an attractive choice for most consumers because when you pay twice as much as you do for a regular car, you don't expect to have it just as much use as a scooter. To add to that, you did not get the kind of air conditioner that you would with a regular car either (back then, they had the seats that would get cooled rather than an air conditioner, but later the air conditioner was added as a standard option on the Reva).I see the air-powered car as a similar solution to the electric car because you have to plug it into an electrical outlet for 'charging' (in this case, compressing). The difference is that the air car can be filled with compressed air at compressed air filling stations. I do not see how a compressed air vehicle can get very far - it will probably have the same limitations as the electric car or the fuel cell car. There would be infrastructure problems, just as there has been with the use of LPG and CNG as fuel sources (LPG did become very popular when consumers were permitted to use the LPG cylinders of their kitchens to power their petrol-powered cars, though people turned to diesel when the government took measures to prevent it). Apart from the infrastructure, the limited range means that it will be of little value to most people in India (typically, people want a car to be able to take them back to their home towns at least once in two months - and that's usually a 300 km road trip).
  7. If you are as old as I am...You probably remember the time when we did not have cell phones. You probably remember the time when we used AM/FM transmitters to communicate through radio. You probably remember the time when cordless phones were cool and had firms introducing ever-increasing range of operation between the base station and the handset. Senao still makes these and are great for use when a land line plan is cheaper than a cell phone plan - if you live in a geographical location where it does not make a difference, you probably won't even bother with cordless phones. You probably remember the time when cell phones were first introduced - my first phone was a Nokia 2050 and that came with a monochrome display and a green backlight. The screen was large enough to read text messages without squinting and was just perfect for SMSes. The downside was the size and weight. It was as large and as heavy as, if not heavier than, the Nokia 9210i Communicator. You probably remember the time when more buttons on the cell phone were better. The Nokia 9210i was really cool because it had dual displays and lots of keys. The inner screen had ATM-style buttons alongside the screen. You probably remember the time when being able to set operator logos on your phone was cool. Now, you can put up just about any wall paper that you can download off the Internet. You probably remember how everyone said the iPhone won't sell because of its price, but just about every other person ended up talking about it and getting one.

    Php Error

You have got a problem with the quotes in the code snippet that you have posted. If you are using Notepad or a text editor that does not automatically create the closing quote for you when you type the opening quote, I would suggest that you try a different PHP editor. NuSphere's PhpEd is good stuff. Komodo makes a good IDE and editor too, but they do have stability issues that they are trying to work out - when they do, they'll have a good product to offer. Notepad++ and many other free editors, will show you the closing quote when you click on the opening quote or vice-versa. Try different source code editors and see what works for your coding style.
  9. @ChelsyHi!Good to have you on board. I see you have already made over a dozen posts on the forum in just two days. That's more than my average, which is about just over one post per day. I do a bit of graphic design and like to create vector art. Nothing too complex, but I try to turn portraits into vector art. I really would like to try to work on character animation some day. You can take exactly one character and change the facial expressions and gestures to express various emotions. It is a very small area of multimedia and it may not have much commercial value within mainstream advertising, but it does give one an opportunity to learn art - capturing the human form and bringing realistic feelings to artistic drawings.A lot of smart phones today include tools that provide the ability to alter photographs. I've got a Nokia N9 and am waiting for the software update to get downloaded right now because of the additional features for the camera application and the ability to add new applications from the Nokia Ovi Store for editing. I am guessing that the new photo application by Nokia would provide red eye reduction, sharpening, and blurring in the new update but I can't tell for sure. If you would like, I can post another thread when the update has been installed to let you know what the Nokia N9 offers with the latest firmware and software suite.
  10. DBMis,Some times, people want to look their best and simply don't have what they need to dress up to look their best so they would put things off to later. Now, after you put something off, you know that it will come back to you eventually in conversation. That's exactly how the girl has been feeling. What you should have done, in retrospect, would have been to change the subject and speak about something that would have made her more comfortable. The reason you finally got a response is that the human mind has a tendency to go between moods, discount risks sporadically, and work in irrational ways. Then, there are the what-if scenarios that the mind keeps evaluating. For all practical purposes, what the message means to you is that there still is a chance of something sparking up so you can decide to start off with a clean slate and see where things go from there.
  11. Fermin,There are limits to physical violence that must not be crossed. A slap on the wrist, a slap across the cheek, or a punch in the belly would not cause physical harm but would only cause humiliation and pain. When physical violence leads to bleeding, scarring, fractures, or any permanent damage, it is inhumane. We see reports of police brutality, soldiers attacking civilians, and violence on campus and all of these are examples of cases in which violence crosses acceptable limits.Bikerman,You've rightly pointed out the fact that all human life must be respected.
  12. Referring to grand parents as the elderly perhaps sounds very impersonal. When one speaks of them, one should think of them as parents of parents. Just as one would want to have his or her parents around, their parents would want their parents around too, or at least they should. The old age homes ought to be for the people who have lost all their children rather than for the general population when they grow old. Every nation has the provision to bring along one's parents, even as an expatriate, so why would anyone have to send their parents to old age homes?
  13. @fermin25Hi Fermin! The MyCENTs often go without getting updated but the best thing about Xisto is that we do eventually get our post credit - better late than never, right? As Velma suggests, creating a support ticket is your best option if you are in need of MyCENTs - each support ticket stays up on the dashboard of the support staff till it gets resolved so there's a constant reminder for someone to fix the problem. Also, the duration for which the ticket remains open is present in the reports so keeping that figure low keeps the support staff motivated to respond to you as quickly as they can.
  14. In laptops, the computer's date and time can be maintained by the regular laptop battery thus eliminating the need for a CMOS battery. The laptop only needs a capacitor for temporarily keeping the state of the clock when the laptop battery is being swapped. There may be cases when the computer's date and time doesn't change after the computer shuts down and the same date and time can be observed when the computer is turned on. This can be associated with a BIOS or motherboard problem rather than a problem with the battery, though it cannot be conclusively determined with a diagnosis that can be applied to all motherboards because vendors build their products differently.
  15. I spent about four hours over the past two days playing World of Warcraft before I finally got rid of it. It was fun at first, but then trying to find my way to completing the quests when I had no idea what to do was simply boring so I uninstalled it. I see it as a 3D version of Diablo II.If I wasn't playing World of WarCraft, I would probably be doing something more productive, but then again by playing World of WarCraft, I know what the game is about and what the current state of computer graphics is. Taking things forward, I may be able to find an open source framework for virtual world development and would be able to build a system that can help people learn about what they need to do, for instance locating the parts for repairs to an automobile.Playing computer games does help you stay away when you have to, so it does make for an alternative to drinking coffee or other caffeine based products. It depends on what you are using it for rather than a generalization that computer games are bad for you.
  16. Hinduism consists of a diverse set of philosophies, some of which may seem contradictory to people who have not been trained in understanding philosophy. It treats the spiritual and the materials entities as distinct and all spiritual entities are thought to have originated from a single larger entity.BTW, Hinduism does not deviate from the single-God ideology. However, it does recognise the presence of demigods who have acquired their abilities from God. The concept is different from that of multiple Gods.
  17. I doubt the addition will slow down the browser when there isn't a video or audio stream being sent or received. Also, I doubt this will be used for YouTube videos or similar because the standard is for communication between browsers rather than between a web browser and a web server. We are seeing a lot of peer-to-peer APIs being introduced in higher level development platforms so it just might be possible for browser development to move to a higher level - perhaps .NET or Java instead of C/C++.
  18. I have a demonstration of the software uploaded to a YouTube as a screencast. I'm working on adding user authentication to the administration panel (used to add/edit/delete/view products) at the moment. Adding authentication before releasing the code is important because just about anyone can add/edit/delete the products on the site if the site doesn't authenticate the administrator. As soon as the authentication is built, folks will be able to install the software to power their web shopping websites.

  20. It's good to hear about how you got your nickname and how it stuck. I am guessing that your dog is in its late years because that's when they become less possessive and adopt a dont-care attitude and simply lie on the ground enjoying their sunset years. It's always sad to see a pet go, whether it was its time or not.I haven't got a dog yet but the thought of getting one makes me wonder how I would have it looked after when I'm away. I'd have to get an SUV or MUV to take it along when on trips and I can't spare the kind of money to replace my sedan right now. Speaking of the sedan, it was a college-going present that my dad bought me and I'm still working toward a graduate degree. Thinking about puppies makes me feel there's an ever greater responsibility for me - finding someone to give away puppies to is hard enough but the thought of having to part with the puppies is even harder. I would probably keep the whole lot and I know that would become a very expensive affair.
  21. Hi!Last month, I spoke to Mr_Dee about starting off a simple shopping site software and after having to put it off because a paper was due and later because I had to work on a paid gig (I've got bills to pay and a family to support too), I finally got about to putting up the foundation stones and getting a simple system that supports Paypal payments. Nothing fancy, but just enough for the average entrepreneur to get started with a web presence. The software is PHP based and runs through a browser. It would be able to run on the Xisto - Web Hosting / Xisto web hosting. It uses the Code Igniter framework and should meet the needs of firms that need to put up a catalog of about a dozen or so products and the ability to accept Paypal payments online for single-product orders. Sure, it does not do most of what commercial software and most open source software out there, but that's what makes this software easier to setup and get started with. Perhaps when the orders start pouring in from the web store, you can get some mods or plugins to have it scale up to more requirements and can even sponsor the development of add-ons for the project.I was wondering if anyone else here on Xisto would like to join in. If you would like to have any features, if you have any code that you would like to contribute, if you would like to test the software, or if you would simply like to use the software for your own web store, post your reply to this thread and we'll see how we can move forward from there.
  22. Replace the $_FORM with a $_POST. My bad, I've been using so many different programming languages that I keep getting the names of the variables mixed up. Try it with $_POST and see if it gives you the result that you expect.
  23. When you mentioned that cab drivers are the least trusted all across the world, I kept thinking lawyers ought to at least come a close second. Politicians are not people who are untrustworthy - people trust them to act against all of their pre-election promises and favor their home state over other states. When you know somebody is going to dupe you just as a calculator would add two and two and print the result as four, it's less of a matter of trust of whether somebody would act in your interest and more of a matter of confidence that he or she would act against your interests.I sometimes wonder what the local politicians are plotting and if I would be affected in any way. There's always the politicians' motorcade that results in blocked traffic in India. In the UAE, the royal family drives around just like everybody else and the concept of having to block traffic for the important folk to go around simply does not exist... except for the time when George Bush was visiting the city and they had to keep the details of his visit a secret for his own safety. They blocked traffic, announced a mandatory public holiday at all business establishments, and had the areas he was visiting shut down.
  24. I imagine that with the technology that you described, the brakes are applied only when you are going in reverse and there is something cutting you off from the rear. When you are speeding along a freeway, you could get cut off from the front, in which case you do want a sensor on the front to apply the brakes for you (many cars do, but they only try to reduce the impact of the accident by gently applying the brakes and do not prevent the accident). I often have a problem seeing kids who are passing by the automatic door of the underground parking at the apartment building I stay at in the UAE. The kids are knee-high and as if seeing them staying right in front of your car is not hard enough, they walk past while driving uphill to get out of the apartment building's underground parking. If I stop when the kid appears, the parking door is going to slam shut on my bonnet and the policeman would come by and give me a fine for being involved in the accident. If I do not stop and run over the kid, I end up in prison for a month followed by having a huge debt from having to pay blood money to the family of the dead and then there's the guilt of having killed another human being though it was an accident. It's like having to pay for what isn't your fault one way or another and having to pick the lesser of the two.
  25. Is C programming really annoying? If you are trying to get your program to fit within a limited space, I would say that the other languages out there are a lot more annoying because for any bit of code that you write, the equivalent in C is much smaller when compiled. You also get to write your code to take advantage of the way that the hardware runs so you can actually optimize your code to run faster. You know when you need to have access to your data so you can allocate a block of memory and retain a pointer to it just long enough to have what you need and you can then get rid of it. If you look at modern languages, they have a garbage collector to reclaim the memory space that is no longer needed and although it sounds like it would work better, garbage collectors are not all that smart and a lot of programmers building software for embedded devices go crazy when they get out of memory errors because of memory that has not yet been claimed by the garbage collector or if the garbage collection operation takes too long because it works as a deferred process - they would much rather want to have the ability to control when the garbage collection takes place and what gets garbage collection, but then again that is pretty much the same as when they want to allocate memory, have a pointer to it, and then have the memoryr freed and when you look at it, they are actually getting the ability to do all of that with C programming so why would they use any other platform when it fits all of their needs? There is an alternate platform, which is assembly language but then they need to change their code to run on each of the different programming platforms that they are targeting. Imagine writing code once for the Intel line of processors and then having to rewrite it all for running on ARM processors. You don't have to do anything of the sort if you are working with C and stick to the basics. All you would have to do is recompile your code to run on the other development platform and most of your code can be reused.
