So long as most every new PC ships with Windows and 90% of the population does not realize that it is not really the greatest OS on earth Microsoft will continue to dominate the OS market. Now factor in that most people use Windows at their job then how many people look at any OS and their first thought is what games can they play on it. On another board someone was actually so idiotic they stated that Unix was useless because you could not play games on it. That mindset has to be broken or re-educated for MS to lose their grasp.

Why Should I Buy A Mac? Some questions

Yes, if you know what you are doing you can build your own system for a decent price. But, I have to ask, does that $500 include a Monitor and an OS? -
Oracle Vs. Mysql Vs. Postgresql POLL Choses you preferred db s/w
darasen replied to avell's topic in Programming
I had to put in a vote for Oracle. lt really does depend on scale though. But, if you want to manage millions upon millions of entries you want Oracle. Look at this list of limitation for example. For simple things like Forums or the like MySQl is sufficient. -
Mysql - So Hard Come in here if you think MySQL is soo hard
darasen replied to Cain1405241557's topic in Programming
To nitpick just a tiny bit MySQL is an RDBMS, Relational Database Management System. That said MySQL in and of itself can be fairly basic too extremely complex contingent upon the scope and scale of the database in question. It is important to distinguish the DB from PHP or what ever language you use. Starting with a solid data model is huge benefit. Having a good grip of ANSI SQL is also very helpful. Thusly my suggestion tends to be to learn what exactly the RDBMS does, what a data model is, then some good SQL. At that point jumping unto PHP is far simpler. -
Hello, to assist in resolving this issue I have a few questions that need to be answered. The database in question: Are you working with it directly? Is the .mdb file on your local machine? Is the database set up as a single user application or as a client/server app?If the Database has a front end are you able to create or edit data through it? Did your client provide you with a user name and password to work on the database?Have you attempted to open the database file exclusively?Does the client have a backup of the workgroup file?Have you tried to delete and replace it?Lastly, for now, what is your exact error message? Answering these questions may well lead you to a resolution if not post the answers.

Why Should I Buy A Mac? Some questions
darasen replied to FirefoxRocks's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I just wanted to add that Macs are not actually more expensive. This is a line I hear all the time and it drives me batty. Sure you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap PC for 500 dollars. However if you look the actual specifications you will discover that you are not getting a good deal at all. Apple simply does not bother making very low end machines. For a short time I worked on AOL's help desk (an absolute nightmare!) There was an astounding amount of calls from users who could not run the AOL software on brand new machines. These were PCs that shipped with just enough ram to run Windows and nothing else. (It is hard to explain to people that the machine they just bought is total garbage.)The cost of ownership for a Mac, in my experience, is much less than a Windows machine. Macs that are several years old still tend to run rather well and have a usefull life much longer than the average PC. Apple does not have the goal of making their own products obsolete every few years. -
What Would It Be Without The Internet!
darasen replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Being old enough to not have grown up internet dependent the idea of people being unable to cope with out is actually a bit scary. Working with youth we go on trips for anywhere from 3 to 12 days. The kids are disallowed cell phones iPods and the like. Amazingly no one has died as a result. While the internet is certainly a great tool for the distribution of information i really do not think of it as in disposable. -
I, for one, am rather fond of Slackware. It is certainly not "out of the box" friendly or easy for beginners. It does offer a very high level of customabilty and complete control for the knowledgeable user. Nor does Slackware have an easy package manager like Debian. However, when an application is installed yiou know where your dependencies are and the sytem always remains extra stable.
