  1. No you're right microsoft doesn't pay godaddy for their domain. Microsoft (now I'm not certian about this, but it seems like a good guess) has become what you could call their own domain registrar. SO they don't pay anybody, they do however do pay membership fees to icann. You'll notice that the registrats often say something like "plus ICANN registration fee" And yes they do all share databases, that's why when you first registre a name it could take several hours for it to work because all the databases around the world must be made aware of your presence.By the way ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
  2. Think of a domain like a PO box, you own the house (Win 2003) but the mail man can't find it, or atleast not without complex directions (IP address) so rather you register a PO box at your local postoffice (Domain Registrar) so when every someone sends you a letter it goes to your PO box and you handle it from there. Inorder to have a domain you need to register it at a "Post Office" just search domain registrar in google. you will also need some other backend stuff running on win 2003, I don't know if it comes with it. But my guess is that if you had to ask about this, then you are bitting of more then you can chew, so to speak.
  3. See I'd thought of that, but that would efect the entire site, I just want the 404 to run the script if the typed address is in the subdirectory of /pages not everywhere else. I know I could write a script for that also, but I'm not there yet. Unless there is a way to change the 404's for diffrent drectorys?
  4. How can i make Xisto to redirect a user to a particular page when they enter a totaly random one, for example, I want to redirect all entries above /pages to /pages, so if the user were to type mysite.trap17.com/pages/asdf/ewrtfg/xvcb/drfy/sertg/asdf or something else totaly random it would automaticaly bring him/her back to mysite.trap17.com/pages. This would be for creating a member type thing so I can have virtual directories defined, I can say to a user your page is mysite.trap17.com/pages/username so that when they type that page they are redirected to mysite.trap17.com/pages and a database and script generates their page, using passed redirect informaiton. It wouldn't be a big homepage just a simple user portal so I feel that making a folder for each user would be a job far to large and taxing, plus this way a database could be used.I hope this is the right form, don't know where else to put it as a particular language hasn't come up yet.
  5. Is it possable with CSS to say I want <<An item>> to be so wide, and no narrower, however if it should need to it can expand as much as I want? Or better yet, can expand only a certain amount? So a DIV would be 400px wide, by default however if 500px of text were inserted into it the DIV would expand it's boundries.
  6. I was wondering If an admin/mod, whoever is more knoledgable would kindly post and tell us all how the credit system actualy works. I know longer, more quality posts are worth more, but how about what actualy defines a high quality post? I you don't want to I understand, but the other night I posted a really long post and it took a good hour to write (I think) but I only got 5-7 credits for it, however today I posted another post much shorter, even shorter then this I think, and it got 1-2 credits.
  7. Firstly I was wondering if I can hava an Xisto and a Xisto host form account at the same time? and secondly, I don't think it's possable but what if I could then transfer credits from one to the other, perhapse if the admin wishes with a tax rate (exchange rate)
  8. Property tax is an intresting topic, that I don't necessarly aggree with, I guess you could call it union fees to belong to a union (in this case own land in USA) The car thing I however aggree with entirly, you pay tax for roads, and that just makes sense, however the insurance thing is questionable, I believe it may have something to do with the whole what if you are in an accident, if you are person ! and you have $1000 dammage to your car, but it's not your fault, then you would expect not to have to pay that, it would be the other guy. If he has insurace then his provider would pay you, now what if he didn't have insurance, you would still aggree that you deserve the $1000, yet maybe he can't afford it, then what? Now as for the rest lets see if I can get it right Well, duh your an american no doubt (don't take offence I read it in the side bar) now would you ASSUME that your neighbors are all partriots (I hope I spelled that right), you probably would, because a very large number of Americans are, just as a very large number of computer users are Windows, If someone is telling you how to do something and you didn't ask for help, then just tune them out, if you did ask for help, (about linux) perhapse you sould have asked someone who uses linux so they will give you a linux answer (Or Mac, as the case may be) Again same thing as patriot, now the thing about IE is that it's the industry standard (so to speak) it can be used on Win, Mac, and Linux (with Wine), so if you use sometihng else that was your choice and it is you responsibability to either learn how to with your borwser, or to use IE for that task. If you were taking a math class on problem solving and you solve a problem one way and th teacher another, one great example is solving for systems of linear equations, there are about 5 ways of solving, if your teacher uses methoid 1 and taught you 1, then you should know one, however you prefer 2, now you ask for help with one question, and you teacher shows you how using methoid one would you get mad because they didn't do it your way? You shouldn't after all way 1 was taught to you (just as you have access to IE) way 1 does work (Just as IE works) and because you choose to be diffrent doesn't mean your teacher should change their lesson just to make you feel better, you made the choice to use FireFox (just as an example) and rather then expecting the whole world to change you should just learn to get along, besides GOD WILLING (sorry if you don't believe in god) IE will die!Trust me on the above I am diffrent, I prefer to do math the diffrent way and use diffrent browsers, ect... Please re-read the above substuting IE for Word, and browser for word processor. No if you made your own operating system it is your job to know how to use it, besides the OS is just a tool that makes communicating with the system easier. If you wrote your own song would you expect you music teacher to teach you how to play it? Now that was just a dumb question, If you expect your teacher to teach YOU a song YOU wrote, you're just out to lunch. As for not having a computer that I do aggree is wrong, if you don't have access to a computer and a teacher expects you to do something on a computer without giving you the oportunity to use one, then you have in my mind grounds for a lay suite in the words of descrimination. Like I said YOU CAN use IE so just do it, or learn how to in the obscure borwser, besides a browser should be able to access the internet, which is I'm assuming what you want to do with it. As for not having the internet, that applies the same as above not having a computer and descrimination, but most people have at least limited access to the internet (in north america anyway) I'm gonna take this one backwards, if you don't have a printer, you don't need a word processor, or may I sugest you email (or otherwise) the file to a school, or friends computer and print it there. If you use a diffrent processor you can find out for yourself, it generaly is the same in all, or else it comes with a help file, also there is a utility called thinkfree.com which is in effect an online word processor with features simmilar to word in all the sme places, use that Now I'm assuming (there's that word!) based on you knowledge of a computer that you could probably figure out all of the above, in which case you should now worry about it. In case you haven't figured out, "I didn't get my english work done on time because someone, somewhere might not have a printer, also when I do get it done it might not be dubble spaced because some people don't know how too, berring in mind I do know how, it isn't fare that I should have to dubble space it when other people can't figure out how too" isn't a very good excuse, although you might want to try it, please tell me how it goes. You're welcome, I guess you could classify what I typed as a vent also, so thanks for reading, if you didn't read it you should, infact scroll right to the top and re read the whole thing Notice from BuffaloHELP: Merged as reported.
  9. Sorry I forgot about this thread, I fixed the problem, turns out the FSB frequency was set at the default 166mhz rather then the 200 it should have been, thanks for your help.
  10. I must say when I first saw the topic I had this sinking feeling and had to click it anyway, despite doing my homework . I thought you guys were going away, but hey what itsn't bad news is good. I've been considering swiching to Xisto for some time now, and one of the only things that keeps me here is the familear names.
  11. try looking in tools >> auto correct options, then try the formating tab, ther are a few options about retaining the formating of a document
  12. Downloads are allowed providing you have legal right to use it, and that isn't the sole purpose of you website, like download.com. You can offer just downloads if you have made all of them and your site is like the developer site. Now as for php 5 I'm not so sure there is I think in cpanel on the left a like to server information, that might tell you what php is running, or you can make a simple script that will generate all server informaiton, the syntax can usualy be found at the start of a php book, or in the installiation guide.
  13. Now that they have gotten over the technical requirements, here is how you would do it, not specific enough because I actualy couldn't tell you what to do, but here goes. In your webserver configuratin file there is a portion dedectated to subdomains. You would need to make a php (or otherwise) frontend so that when a user added a new subdomain it would make the change in the webserver conf file, thus activating the web hosting. You would also tell all pages on your website to redirect to a particular page, meaning using a particular edit tell all but the administration pages and home page to go to a redirection page, now on that page there would be a script that would say where is this page coming from? check a database and from that database using the header function (in php) you would send the user to that page. That however wouldn't cloak the users address. In my mind the easiest way to cloak the users address would be to set a frame the same size as the window with the url to the one the user typed, and a source of the one the user specified. But like I said that is all in theory I couldn't tell you how to do this in detail
  14. I was wondering, and since this forum is an international thing, In North america we have a saying that goes "Giving my two cents" or something like that, it means having your say no matter how small in a conversaiton. I was wondering, what about places where there is not 1 cent coin?
  15. You ask why people are so bumb as to install spyware, well tell me if you were walking down the street and saw a 100 dollar bill laying on the sidewalk, would you pick it up? Now what if I told you that same Bill was laced with a powerful nerve toxin. Withen several seconds of touching it your skin would start to grow legions and swell, within several minutes your throat would swell and you would sufficate. Now tell me why you picked up that 100 dollars. Probably because you wanted it. So why would you download a desktop buddy? Because you want it, and just like that 100 dollar bill there was no sign anything was wrong.
  16. Happy thanksgiving, eh. (To all the canadians out there)
  17. It's not that I don't like quotes, as you can see It turly does make the thread easier to read, but when people quote the entire thing, I find it even more annoying when a mod has edited the post, and the quote includes the mods yello sticky
  18. 1) There's nothing I hate more then a person who replies to an incredibly long post by first quoting that message in there post. It gets even worse when they are the only people who has responded. I mean general rule of thumb when your post is the only post you don't need to quote the entire post from just above, we know what you are talking about because, I just finished reading it.2) Or, how about the threads that have 5+ replies and we will say that the original question is where can I download a free and legal version of word, and the first reply is, "you can't, word isn't free" the second is "Well you could try open office it has much of the same functionaly of word" The third being, well you can download the word viewer which will let you read and print, or you can download a trial from MS website." Those all seem like good posts, maybe a little short but otherwise informative, then a guy comes along sees a topic title like "Free MS word?" and says, okay reads the question hits the reply button and says, (after first making a lengthy quote (see above rule)) "Well you can't get a free fully functionality copy of word, however you might want to try the free trial from MS, or better yet use Open Office, it is free and works just the same" Now can someone please tell me what the point of that post was, did it add to the conversation? NO Did it in any way make a good point? NO and it's even worse if I asked the question, and wasn't quite satisfied with the above posts then when I got the email regarding the new post I though it might be a helpful post, turns out it wasn't. I really just want to snap on those people.Well there's my vent
  19. I aggree this is really annoying, I mean sometimes they have good question, something that makes you think, hum, well I really don't know, and because I have had more experiance in it I might know where to look. Now when it's an easy thing that's another story. In my computers class a few years ago we were given a list of computer parts and asked what they did, some even had a picture. So questions like "what's an audio port do?" Gee you know that's a tough question, audio...that means sound, port well that's tricky, oh wait port that's where the boats go when they aren't at sea, so an audio port must be, well.... OH the place where the party boats go to get in on the good tunes. I mean seriously people THINK ABOUT IT, or better yet read the accompinaing notes. Good plan, only problem is, I think its a little late for that!!
  20. Well, it seems to me that if you made your 404 error page so that it contined a javascript redirect that should do the trick.
  21. Could you please explain that a little more? The way I understand it you can host anything you want, legal or ilegal, if it is ilegal however be prepaired to suffer the consquences, which in this case is having your hosting permantly removed (or worse). So if you wrote a program and wanted to host it, you can. If you have a garage band and want to host some of your music, you can. But beware of bandwidth consumption.
  22. I was wondering how I go about getting my cpanel username out of my form profile, I don't recall telling it to be there, and yet it is, and I can't figure out how to make it go away. It seems like a security flaw, afterall having a username is the first place to start hacking.
  23. I have a coputer about a year and half old, anyway last night I had to reset the BIOS due to some unplesnentness, which I'm not willing to discuss. Anyway that went well however now the computer thinks the process is AMD athalon XP 2500+ when it actualy is a 3200+, I know this for a fact it is printed on the processor (I checked). Anyway when I was in the BIOS a wile ago I thought I saw I clock setting option, anyway now I can't find it. Can anyone tell me where in the BIOS these options should be. Some Specs:Board: nVidia-nForce2 SoltekBIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 11/28/2003Precessor: 3200+, 1.65v, L2 Cache 512kb, Max FSB 400mhz
  24. One of the nice things about slax is that it is modulated, so you can "install" a whole bunch of diffrent products onto it before burning. As for the size, I don't remember but I do know I downloaded it while on dialup, it did take a long time, but I did accomplish it.
