WHAT KIND OF COMPUTERS DO PIXAR USE?Question About Professional 3d AnimatingI do not work there, but aspire to. As a result I have done my homework on the systems and software they utilize to create their features. Software wise, Pixar relies heavily on proprietary software called Marrionette to complete their character animation. This is an internally developed software package and is not available commercially. Animators who are brought in are presumably "schooled" on this program, however I cannot imagine it being much different from some of the other high-end 3D animation programs out there like 3D Studio Max or Maya. If it were the learning curve would likely be too great. I believe they also use other commercially available software as well, but Marrionette is the main one. Renderman is the software they use to draw the finished frames of animation. It is commercially available and can be purchased directly from Pixar. The license fees are quite steep, however, and its unlikely that most individuals would be able to afford it for their own personal use. Animation and effects houses, however, are definitely free to license it on a year-to-year basis. Hardware wise, I believe that Pixar is using standard, off the shelf computer boards and CPUs, although they are very likely high end (ie. Opteron / I7 / Xeon) and definitely on a massive scale in the order of several thousand processor cores. As for workstations, I am unsure, however my best guess is that they would be using some pretty high end equipment in that arena as well, as anyone who has ever worked on CGI knows, that a fast stable workstation is crucial to time-sensitive and mission critical work. Their lead animators are very likely utilizing/sharing something like a mini Cray, like the Cray CX1, which they would need if they were handling large scenes with massive polygon counts and thousands of keyframes. ResponseBest Hdd Defragmenter?I currently use a Vista, and the defragment program that they give us is probably the worst I've ever seen. I keep pressing defrag, and it just doesn't do ANYTHING for me. So I googled a bit and I found that defraggler was a good program. The first time I used it, it took me 5 hrs to defrag it. I found this completely normal because I haven't defragged my computer since I bought it (a year and a half ago), so 5 hrs of my time was worth the wait. The results? I got 60GBs opened up, and when I finished, I noticed that everything was actually a lot faster. Opening folders, pictures, internet things, just everything was faster. I was happy and content with it. I also heard that everyone should defrag about once every week, so in a week, I tried to defrag again. I hoped that it would take around 20-45 minutes, but instead, after 2 hrs, it still was at 89%. I was pissed and just thought that defraggler was good only if you haven't defragged in a long time. I then heard about diskeeper, and downloaded the trial version. Right when I ran it, it was FAST, it took me 10 minutes to "defrag" my main memory, but the downside was...I don't think it did a lot. Why? I went back to defraggler (defraggler shows some sort of picture while defragging, while diskeeper doesn't) and it still showed a bunch of fragmented files. I now was even more mad at Diskeeper pro and decided that even if defraggler doesn't take 20-40 minutes like I would've like it to do, I still like it better. so... +1 vote for Defraggler =] -reply by Makion

OverdraftChase-good Example Of Bad BankingI cannot believe what this bank is doing. I had ample amount of money in my account, took cash out to pay my mortgage, showed still had a positive balance. Get home before bed check my account and is still good. Get to work first thing this morning and boom, 3 overdraft charges amounting to $102 for 3 transactions, one for only $0.80. All 3 of these transactions were not pending/posting/nothing on my account but somehow went through after business hours after 11pm to charge me all this. So I tried calling to get them reversed, yeah got INDIA, she was rude, and when I asked for a supervisor she hung up on me. So now I get to go to the bank after work with my receipt showing I had a positive balance and try and argue to get my money back. Wish me luck and if you have any advice on getting it reversed let me know. She has said they have refunded me before but I have never had any reversed. I like how they say the are re-vamping their overdraft fees, to make it more clearer, well if they were clear in the first place this type of things wouldnt happen. And the fact that they are eliminating over draft fees for any transaction under $5, well supposedly my 3 were all under $5. If Bank of America can re-vamp theirs in less then 2 weeks but takes Chase until maybe the first quarter of next year. Ready to shop for another bank or just keep an account to cash checks in and leave only $5 bucks in it to keep it open. I just love how they put a hold on one of their own checks for $175 instead of verifying the money is there and holding it for 3 days. -reply by Traci

USB FLASH Drive error "no media"Formating Usb Flash DriveThe issue is open because (1) It is a different problem (you just assumed it was the same after a quick skim) ...OR (2) Prior forum solutions are no longer easily accessed (site down, match ranked very low, etc) I have a similar issue. The :"NO MEDIA" error prevents simple formatting because the drive properties say 0MB available to partition or format. An unformatted hard drive will still report the total GB available to be partitioned and formatted. The same USB flash drives work with another XP system and have accessible files. So I am thinking the solution is not flash drive repair. My rough guess is that something is wrong in the USB device detection or available USB drivers or possibly in the removable media services. -reply by Isme

Headphone - sound coming out of jack5th Generation Ipod!This morning I attempted to listen to the radio and it told me the headphones were not plugged in and yet they were. I tried resetting it, but the sound is still coming out of the jack and the earphones. I also noticed the battery seemed to be discharging fast and I just recharged it last night (following all the instructions to eject first). I leave the headphones plugged and loosely wrap the cord around the device, making sure the jack is not stressed. I just bought the 8gb iPod Nano two weeks ago and could it already be broke? PS3 and Xbox noobs. I used to be on your side but get a PC and you will see for yourself. You have no idea how superior the PC is to both. Who says graphics are best on PS3... You are insane.. How can the ps3 compare to a PC for example that runs quad core and 2 superb video cards like GTX295 in SLI... Hahaha. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE. Benefits of PC over any console:- number of player in game (max18 on ps3 and xbox... On PC max 64) 64 feels like a real battle.- dedicated servers (meaning no peer to peer connection... On consolse you connect to a kid (the host) that has upload speads of not even 500kb... Then you get those hosts that just disconnect in middle of the game and then a new host has to be found) not with dedicated server... PC has thousands of them on COD4. Dedicated servers have high upload speeds therefore it can handle more players.- tons of servers with variety.. And even custom maps- mods (PC has tons of mods unlike the console) where do you think hardcore mode and zombies came from.. They came from PC moders. They also design custom maps and weapons. Again variety (one time I played in a server with low gravity mod... You could jump and remain flying in the air while shooting your enemy.. Land on top of buildings.. Etc... I was having same problem, xampp and mysql both can not be started on my vista 32bit. I figured out that was due to not having full permission to logged user. I right click on installed xampp directory and give full permission to logged user. That solved my xampp problem. -reply by Arshad
