iGuest replied to iGuest's topic in Programming
Tip: You can use a URL as a filename with this function if the fopen wrappers have been enabled. <? $dp = "http://www.vaila.net/v1/home.php;; if (!$dp) { echo("<P>Error: unable to load URL file into $dp. Process aborted.</P>"); exit(); } $sp = file_get_contents($dp); highlight_string($sp); ?> -
Author: Michael Land (me) Date: 13 May 2005 Introduction: I've decided to put all the information I know that is relevant into one compendium. The following parts to this guide have been designed in different stages. Each stage looks at the four crucial parts to a website. The SLIP method (Structure and Layout, Language and text, Imagery and the Producer's Intentions). By following the SLIP method, everyone should be able to produce a site that is of excellent standards, no matter how good or bad they are at certain areas. If you have not read part 1, then please do so. Click Here.. Language and text. Basics: The language and text of a website is just as important as anything else. This is due to the fact that this is your actual content, in which visitors have come to see. Guests to your site will be more interested if you have a great set-out of content, easy navigation and quality sentence accuracy. Language and text differ from each other. Language is the actual tone in which it is set. Is your site formal, informal, teenage slack-writing (e.g. "I luv u") or is your site a promotional advert for some product or service? You must always take into account what your site genre is, to base your language upon it. Text on the other hand is classed as the quality, design and quantity of the text blocks you have on your page. Quality is defined by the sentance accuracy; have you got all the punctuation marks in the right place, have you got simple and complex sentences. The design of your text is simply, where you put it, the formatting of it (bold, italic, underline, coloured, etc) and finally the quantity is how much you should or do have that reflects the genre of the site. Too much text on a teen's site is a death trap and too little on a promotional site is a failure. Remember to always revert back to the site genre if you get stuck. Moving On... Now that a general understanding has been met, I can get onto the more complex and detailed side of things. Language can not really be interpreted or understood anymore than it has been. So that leaves text. The text of your site is not only classed as another design feature, but it is one of the primary reasons to why visitors will keep coming back. Why is this? Well let's make a list: - Obnocious coloured text will often deter visitors. Avoid going for over-whelming colours like pink, and cut back to white / black / gray. - Generally speaking, most people scan read when it comes to looking at what a site has to offer. They often pick up on the words that mean anything of interest. By simply making certain keywords bold or underlined (never the two together) you can direct their attention. - Keep your sentences short. It doesn't matter whether it is informal or formal language you are going for. Long sweathes of sentences annoy visitors, as they are more complex and take that little bit longer to read. - Over formatting is one of the most widely spread site killer. Mixing bold with italics, bold with underline, italic with underline and bold with italic and underline is the worse thing that can happen. You end up over-emphasising the word. Use only one formatting option and keep to it throughout the site. Content also fits in with text. Regularly updated content will make your site go on leaps and bounds. It is highly recommended, that if you have the patience to set a blog up or CMS (Content Management System) then updating your content daily or weekly will be extremely useful. Why? Becuase it is that feeling of pressing reload, and the page displaying something new. Informal language often means that you can make slight inaccuracies with sentence structure, word play and etc. Wrong. With webdesign, it is a much different ball game. All sentences should be properly co-ordinated with the appropriate grammar and punctuation. The only difference between informal and formal, is that formal has mutch stricter rules on word use and adaptation. It can not be personal. Teenage slack-writing appears to have no rules. However, over-excessive use of this language can be the downfall of a site, even if it is for teens. A rule for remembering how much to put on your site, always remember the 70/30 rule. 70% text or space and 30% imagery. This balance is what seperates the good from the bad. Regards, --mik

Everybody is interesting in the big new world of grid computing should post under this topic. First Question: What is Grid Computing?Grid is a type of parallel and distributed system that enables the sharing, selection, and aggregation of geographically distributed "autonomous" resources dynamically at runtime depending on their availability, capability, performance, cost, and users' quality-of-service requirements. But what are typically grid computing environments? Do anybody have experience with GD in real use?

Author: Michael Land (me) Date: 12 May 2005 Introduction: I've decided to put all the information I know that is relevant into one compendium. Structure and Layout. Basics: The structure and layout is probably one of, if not the most important factors in web design. This is because visitors love an easy to navigate website and a clear-cut layout. Using fancy borders, extra graphics and sweathes of unneccessary effects are damaging to a website. The structure generally refers to the actual depth of your site. Where will text be put, where is the imagery going to go and what is there going to be on that page. Layout is NOT the same as structure in web design. Whereas structure generally branches out into the other sections (Language and text and Imagery), layout only lends itself into the image category. The layout of a site is just as important as the structure. Visitors to a site want an eye-candy layout, not to be bombarded with hundreds of different focal points*. Remember to keep layout as slick as possible, this way you will bring back the visitors that came to your site. Moving On... Now that I have covered the basics, it should be easier for you to grasp the way in which a structure and layout of a site should be designed and co-ordinated. Before any design of a website begins, you should always plan it out on paper first. Whether it be a scruffy little scribble or a highly detailed map, you should always plan it out first. When designing the structure of your site always take into account: - Genre of the site - General site content - The amount of details on the page(s) When it comes to the actual layout of your site, it is a little more complex. Layout is probably the number one killer of websites. Designers (whether it be newbie or oldie) often make the mistake of over-doing it. An extra graphic here, a new content block there can make the whole plan fade. Generally speaking, layouts should be evenly spread across the screen, instead of being nucleated and compact. Do not try to cram everything into one page, spread it out a little. On almost all site types, it is best just to use a five colour pallete. Four of these colours should be harmonic (similar colours that go together) and the fifth should be a contrasting colour (in which is for your text). Using obnocious colours will only deter visitors. For help with colours, check out http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. Grids. Lay out a grid and stick to it. This can make the difference between failure and achievement. Borrow a book on the use of grids in web design from your local library if you are not sure. You should also make sure that the layout incorporates different blocks or sections that are recognisable. That way, the visitor can see what the different sections are. Regards, --mik

The I-pod The effect I-pods putting on music ind.
iGuest replied to iGuest's topic in General Discussion
I think that the iRiver is the best. However, the design of it is a little nasty (the front buttons). And if you are looking to mod your ipod, then a guy from germany "hacked" the ipod and has managed to build several applications such as image ipod to store images (black pixel) as well. That is why, the sudden new relases of the Picture Ipod have come to light and the newest, Ipod Shuffle. It solely depends on what you want.--mik -

Military Assembled World's Most Formidable Hackers
iGuest replied to ebbinger_413's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think that if such a group of hackers did exist, then it would be top secret. And it doesn't matter whether or not all of the best hackers are under the "gov'n' control". If they want to do something, then they will do it.I think that it is a fluke. However, the government probably already have a team of hackers.--mik -

After an articled i read lately in creative magazine i found out a few facts on the i-pod and what an invancement it is, not just in creatine design but the in way we listen to and how business' market music. It may be small but the i-pod, which is one of the "coolest" products on the market at the moment, is one of the biggest thing to happen to music. It's unbeleiveble how in ten years mp3 players were'nt getting snatched up until the i-pod came along in 2001.if you look at the stats the product went from selling 125 000 units in 2001, to 6 million by october 2004, and an incredible 10 million by january 2005. Apple must be onto, sorry Jonathan Ives (designer) must be onto something. But wait, you would think that with people buying so many mp3 players the sales of cd's would be going down, but no. I has'nt at all. In the uk this year cd sales have hit a record high of 237 million sales in 12 months to september. Record companies have worked out they can make money from selling their music on online music stores such as apple i-tunes charging $1 per song to people who own i-pods.Well there is a few things about it that i learned there is much more, but now i have put the seed in your head. i would like to know your comments, facts and theories you have on the topic of this creative designers/music lovers dream.hope to hear fom you all soon. aaronthanks creative magazine. you guys rock.

Do U Have Brain To Think ? help me in desinging my website ...
iGuest replied to vstxy's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Agreed to the above. This topic serves no relevance, nor contribution to the forums. Therefore, catagorily speaking, you are spamming. If you need a help with designing your site, then please make a more suitable topic with all the necessary information. Also provide incentives as to why we should help you.Secondly, why not look in a web design book? Look around the Internet to find sites that you like and could copy. Finally, learn how to1) Spell.2) Use grammar.--mik -
Hi yvonnefoog, good to see that you want to learn more, and trust me, you will.Hope you enjoy your time here,--mik

Apache is web server software that handles all web requests from the net. It is the program that sends to the clients (web browsers) the pages they request to view.IIS and miniHttpd are just a few of the other web server software you could come by, Apache is what we use here at Xisto.XAMPP is an all in one package, use to be known as LAMPP - Linux Apache MySQL Perl and PHP, but they introduced Windows to it as well which made it WAMPP too, so they decided on XAMPP as a way to name both packages.Apache is web server software.MySQL is database software, can be used for storing web related content, passwords, users, etc.PERL is a scripting language mainly used on the web for CGI script programming, gives you the ability to make dynamic content for your web pages, etc.PHP is a scripting language that can be embedded in HTML pages to give dynamic content, it's what these forums here at Xisto use. With that combination of software for a web server, you can't go wrong, but you can find other additional things you may want to have, check out XAMPP and you'll notice they give you other things like FTP servers to run your own FTP site, as well as other applications that help improve the performance of your web server. You can run a web host off any internet connection, faster the better, as well as your computer specs, they should be at least reasonable to handle the processing of your web pages, especially if you're heavy in intensive scripts. You may also like to look at having a static IP, if you don't have one, you may want to look at getting a DNS IP from the likes of no-ip.com or dyndns.org. They will give you a name you can use to hand out to people and that name will always point back to your computer, just like a domain name.I know you'll have more questions to ask, and I'll try and get my tutorial out on setting up your own web server, although it's starting from basic installation and is done around a Linux computer, but some of the general configurations apply to whatever Operating System you use.Cheers,MC

Best Place To Learn C++ I would like to learn C++
iGuest replied to VJgamer1405241488's topic in Programming
Hey empty,The transition from C to Objective C is not a major overhaul, it's quite a simple change, just getting use to more stricter and different ways things are accomplished by.Learning Institutes are still highly recommended for learning languages, I'm not saying it because of the tutors, but it's actually the students who you would learn from, you get in a group of very good developers and you'll pick things up better. Other than that, the tutor can sometimes provide some decent knowledge, but seriously, it's the students you work with who have the brains! You really should learn C indepth though, it's still largely used because it gives you more control, which is what programmers want. I noticed with the newer generation languages that they are starting to restrict this control.Cheers,MC -
Hey clovis, I recommend https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html XAMPP to run your own web server with features you can't go pass. This would be your best method of getting everything you need. Otherwise my suggestion would be installing individual packages, which XAMPP has ready to be installed. I would also suggest ditching Windows XP, but go with XAMPP, it's an all in one package. Cheers, MC

The closest thing to a free powerful graphics editor is either pain.NET or The GIMP. The GIMP - very unstable and not suggested for anyone who wants a stable envirnoment.- if you can cope with the numerous errors, then the plugins can prove very valuable- is as strong as Photoshop and alike when it comes to the actual editingpaint.NET- very stable- can be seen as the bridge between paint and PSP or Photoshop.- Only has limited features- little or no plugins yet availableVerdict: paint.NET for easy use The GIMP for advanced graphical manipulation / creationHowever, if you prefer old style pixelated images, then why not use manual hard labour with paint.--mik

Just remember to delete all of the files. Some may lie redundantly in other areas. And make sure the database is completely edradicated. Also, check the copyright information (and disclaimer) to make sure that you can do what you propose to do (although I think it is ok, it might not).--mik
