Many people have cited different reasons for selecting Xisto.com.In my case, I was searching for a Ad-FREE MySQL PHP FREE hosting service. I did not have much confidence either that there may be a service like this present in this world when I started the search. But when I found Xisto, I was simply delighted. We, who are opting for FREE Hosting Services, are ready to compromise and co-operate with the Host in every possible way. So, earlier I have spotted some hosting services that place Ad-banners either at the TOP or Right Frame of your website. In each case, I had to change the Layout of my webpages to accomodate for Ad-space. And as you can imagine, what it means. So far as Xisto.com, though I have not hosted my site here as yet, but every thing is OK. Regarding compulsory postings, you have clarified your stand at the time of signup and I appreciate your rules. Also staying attached in such an active forum gives me lots of pleasure, information and updates. Personally, I have got quite a number of fresh information from the forum postings here at Xisto . And in course of our online activities, all of us find so many interesting things, and I think, when we get an opportunity to share those with like-minded persons from all corner of the globe, it really carries a sense of satisfaction. You may also encourage good posting by selecting the best post of the month or something like that. However, I have a small request. As in my case, it really takes good time to post a quality posting. So please give more preferences towards the merit/quality of a post rather than its length. And if possible, please publish some model posts so that I may work on improving the quality of posts in future. So, go ahead with your present services. Best wishes for you.

Search Engine Submission how to submit my site to search engine
iGuest replied to whafizi's topic in Search Engines
Lots of people have different voices regarding search engine submission. I can suggest you the links for submitting your site to MSN,Google And Yahoo. For MSN the link is MSN.com For Google the link is Google.com For Yahoo, the link is Yahoo.com. So far as my suggestion goes, do not re-submit your site to Google as I have seen GoogleBOT to be clever enough to pick up the changes in your site. But it takes some time,as in my case, it took nearly a month to get my site indexed in Google completely. -
This is a good Directory where you can Add your URL for FREE. search4i.com They have a wide ranges of categories and visited by many visitors each day. They will allow you to write Title,Description and Keywords for your website. But so far as I have seen, they do not allow you to edit information relating to your website. Once you have submitted the URL to them. So, make sure before posting that whatever you are writing is accurate.

lonebyrd, Create your css file in a simple text editor like notepad and save it as a "css" file extension. ie: style_file_name.css Upload into your hosting space in the same directory as the html files. Inside the head tags of the html file, include the link to the css file . <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml/; xml:lang="en" lang="en"><head> <title>An XHTML 1.0 Strict standard template</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" /> <link href="style_file_name.css" type="text/css" ref="stylesheet" media="all" /></head><body> <p>... Your HTML content here ...</p></body></html>This is the format for an xhtml 1.0 doc type strict which can be found at the w3c site (I think that's where I snagged it from). If IE gives you any problems, try deleting the line before the DocType in order the change to/from standard/quirks mode. (I can never remember which one is which). But that sometimes is an issue. Are you saying that the linking doesn't work? or are you saying that the style doesn't work as planned? If the link is failing, then include the css in the files by using a style tag. Like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml/; xml:lang="en" lang="en"><head> <title>An XHTML 1.0 Strict standard template</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" /><style type="text/css">body { }div { }#content { }#header { }#footer { }</style></head><body> <p>... Your HTML content here ...</p></body></html>If the style doesn't work, then that is a whole other can of worms. Post back here (on a new topic in the HTML sub-forum) and we'll either assist you or point you in another direction. Hope this helps. Mods/Admin : Merge or Move as required. Thanks.

Buy the Domain, point the domin to the Xisto nameservers, Park the domain in the cpanel of your account at Xisto, and point it as above. Works for me. http://purcellcrossing.com is pointed to a sub-domain of http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ done exactly that way*edit typo*

Main Signature Text: Fallen Angel Grunge Type: Shadowy, hazy style. (like a misty) Colour Scheme: Black, white, (maybe a little gold or something that flows with this 'dark' angel style) Animation: I dont want to make this to complicated so i'll say no animation, i would love one but i dont expect you to go to that much effort but if you can, i'll let you be creative i'm sure i will love it. Characters/Objects: Angel Wings (probbaly dark since its a 'fallen angel' This signature will be used in ALOT of forums and used for a very long time thats why i would like it to be done by someone more skilled than my basic computer skills. I will even post reference acknowledging your creative artwork. the size i would like to be about standard signature size in a rectangle shape (maybe even a creative shape other than a rectangle) as long as it will fit nicely at the bottom of my posts If anyone can make a signature please do so, i will be VERY very grateful. Thanks, Marcus.

Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail Whos winning the battle?
iGuest replied to jcguy's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Haha, I totally agree with you on the amount of space XD I have so much emails in my hotmail folder, that I'd think it would use at least 50 percent of the 250 megs. Then I check and it says only 13 O_O;; What's the point of changing an email that all your friends know to heart, when you can get a 2 gig email that you won't even use much space of? Maybe... I'm sticking with what I already have for the easy way. -
Dragon Ball Shin Budokai (PSP) Anyone interested in it as I am?
iGuest replied to kgd2006's topic in Computer Gaming
I can't really say in my opinion. I heard it's going to be pretty good, but anything new that we can't expect really? I want something more original, or something more exciting, playing the same game that I played on Playstation 2, but cheaper, kind of kills it for me :/That's probably why I'd rate most games that are original, or not supposed to resemble the ps2 version better. Like Metal Gear Acid, I'd give it a 9.5 for being creative and addicting, while the playstation 2 version is much different. Same for Burn Out, it was great and all, but I felt there could've been more. In other words, I guess you can call it biased to the ps2 version in favor of, or whatever. I think this Dragon BAll game might do the same thing from the looks of it, but I don't know. Haven't played it yet see... -
A Php Menu-builder Tutorial This Sidebar Menu-builder code and the php scripts are adapted from a Tutorial on the Xisto.com Forum titled : CMS101 - Content Management System Design . Since the original tutorial's author (vujsa) did such a marvellous job of describing the system in the original Topic posting, I will not attempt to explain it here, rather, I invite you to have a look at his Topic and learn from it. The Basic tutorial provided coding for developing a table-based web-site template which used php includes and embedded data to create a 'menu section' in the template, which was simply building a list of anchors inside a table cell using php. This adapted version takes it a couple of steps further. Notes 1.) To begin with, the list of menu items are inside a div tag which is more compliant to the standards. The Template used by vujsa is 'table based', but, using the 'sidebar' code in a div-structured page would bring it in-line with proper css and (x)html coding, (using div's and embedded css rather than tables). (*see note about validation below*) The focus here is on the 'menu' creation, not the template structure. 2.) Secondly, the list is built using dl, dt and dd tags instead of ul's and li's. This allows for a little more control on the styling of the Menu. Where the "ul,li" method is a two level structure, the "dl, dt, dd" method allows for three levels of styling. There are numerous tutorials on the web showing dl menus and I encourage you to read them. 3.) Thirdly, the new sidebar version adds class tags to, again, allow for some CSS hooks. 4.) Fourthly, be aware that this Model will, NOT pass the w3c validator for the simple reason that the menu includes an "alt=" tooltip feature.(with this exception, the code did in fact validate.) The alt= is a deprecated html tag and is not allowed in the most recent Standards, so if you are a 'purist', this code isn't for you unless you remove this portion of the function and data structure. Title tags are included. They are the preferred method to include 'tooltips', but with the large percentage of users still bound to this proprietary Microsoft feature, I have chosen to allow for it here. 5.) Fifth, the css for the table is embedded in the code, but is easily removed and could be linked to an external stylesheet. I'll leave you to do that. The css for the sample sidebar in the index2.php file is already in a file named sidebar.css. //<?php // start using php parsing//// this is the function which uses the data defined below//function make_menu($name,$class, $url,$alt,$title) {//// check to see if the div is starting//if ($url == "header") { $link = '<div><dl><dt class="' . $class .'" >' . $name . '</dt>'; }//// or else check to see if the div is ending// else {if ($url == "footer") { $link = '</dl></div>'; }//// or there must be link information// else{ $link = '<dd class="' . $class . '"> <a href="' . $url . '" title="' . $title . '" alt="' . $alt . '">' . $name . '</a>'; } }/// return from the function with a string variable for echoing//return $link;}?> // end this function<?php // place this code where you want the menu in your html page/// $crlf is used to format the html output. One long line of text which is difficult to read//$crlf="\n\r\t";//// call the function once for each entry in the list of links// the first call prints the opening div tag and sets a class for the div. specify $url as 'header'//echo make_menu("Sidebar Header Here", "sbhead1", "header","","") . $crlf;//// the remaining calls create a link (anchor) tag of another class// using variables in this order:($name,$class, $url,$alt,$title)//// $name - displayed button name// $class - css class for the link / header// $url - h t t p address for the button or defines a header and footer// $alt - the contents of the alt tag displayed on mouse over// $title - the contents for the title tag displayed on mouse over// // echo make_menu("displayed button name", "css class for the link / header", "place link here inside quotes","contents of the alt tag","the contents for the title tag") . $crlf;// each link can have different classes if desired see the Third group of the index2.php example//// Sample data as used for the index2.php file//echo make_menu("Google", "link", "https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl Search","Google Search from here") . $crlf;echo make_menu("Yahoo!", "link", "http://yahoo.com/ Search","Yahoo!") . $crlf;echo make_menu("My Favourite Forum", "link", "http://forums.xisto.com/ Forum","Xisto Forum") . $crlf;//// call the ending div tag by specifying 'footer' as the variable $url//echo make_menu("", "", "footer","","") . $crlf;?><?php //// multiple sub-sidebars of different classes can be called within the same div by repeating the function calls using new data//echo make_menu("Second Sidebar", "sbhead2", "header","","") . $crlf; echo make_menu("Google", "link1", "https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl it from here","Google it from here") . $crlf; echo make_menu("Yahoo!", "link1", "http://yahoo.com/ Search","Yahoo Search") . $crlf;echo make_menu("Another Great Forum", "link1", "http://forums.xisto.com/topic/86340-topic/?findpost=1064320566 Forum","Xisto Forum") . $crlf; echo make_menu("", "", "footer","","") . $crlf;?><?php // // or alternate the classes for presentation. Admittedly, this Template is very basic and is not meant to be 'cut and pasted' into a web site, but rather, to be used as a learning tool to provide you with the means to build your site using templating concepts which makes the maintenance of a site easier, and the presentation more consistent across pages. Some html/css knowledge would be required to make changes to the files, but very little. Just a reminder to make any modifications on a 'copy' of the files so if you alter something critical to the function of the code, you will have an un-modified version to resume your work from. Happy coding. Zip File Contents For the Basic Template use : index.php header.php menu.php main.php footer.php For the Sidebar Version use : index2.php header.php menu2.php main.php footer.php sidebar.css Download the sample files here A sample of the original menu code is available in the file named menu.php To build the menu inside the table based template using php includes as per vujsa's Tutorial go here: index.php To sample an unstyled 'sidebar menu' : menu2.php To build the Basic Template with the a styled sidebar menu : index2.php To alter the css for the index2.php: sidebar.css Using these files on your Local Computer requires a version of php installed and the files resident in your "localhost" path. Instructions for the use or installation of php is beyond the scope of this article. Google on "xammp" or "wamp" to find out more about those two packages. Download Zip file Here

I couldn't track down my dreamweaver CD (haven't used it in years), so plans to install it may not go, unless I copy my installation from my Windows partition over and work from that. However I don't really know why you're wanting to use dreamweaver, but you could try the alternative for Linux which is Nvu (n-view) which maybe what you want http://www.nvu.com/index.html An alternative to MS Money, might be KMyMoney http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/index-home.html but I might be wrong, as I have not used MS Money before so don't know if it's equivalent or not. It runs natively on Linux, so it'd have better performance than running it from WINE. Cheers, MC

Computers As A Profession Need suggestions on a computer career
iGuest replied to CroSpartacus's topic in Software
Do not limit yourself is all I can recommend.I can say from my own experience that demand is not as high as been stated for computer technicians, in fact if I was you and wanted a career as a computer technician, I would also look at the sales/retailing aspects as well, in which you could be doing two jobs, selling computers as well as building/servicing.If you are only limiting yourself as a computer technician, then you'll be better off doing it for yourself, and starting your own business for it.So many businesses are restructuring their IT department (laying them off), because it's a huge expense having them, and with technology becoming more reliable and cheaper, the decision for getting something fixed, to having it replaced instead is always being considered, and sometimes it's the cheapest option to go for. It's quite sad that some of these businesses are Schools, in which they are no longer having onsite administrators, but call whenever they need something done.Software will also be a problem that'd need resolving for most people rather than hardware related.Cheers,MC -
Best Way To Learn Javascript I would very much like to know.
iGuest replied to Ayla1405241517's topic in Programming
I would not avoid learning Javascript, it can help speed things up, especially if a lot of things can be done clientside rather than using the server.I'd say, read the EMCA-262 on Javascript, it's not really going to help you learn like a tutorial would but it's more like a reference and guideline, it's also the standards.I know a lot of web languages, but you shouldn't avoid using javascript, as long as you apply it correctly, it can dramatically help speed things up. The term coined "AJAX" is definitely something to keep an eye on, as more and more web applications are built using it. Learning the DOM API also would be required. There's some who don't use Javascript, but you'll find that in most situations it's neccessary to run, since web developers don't degrade nicely without it. So do try to learn how you can also get by without using Javascript, since that's important to do too.Cheers,MC -
CodeWeaver's CrossOver is a WINE based package, that helps dramatically with running Windows programs under Linux, it however is not free. I'm still thinking you should try winetools, I'm not sure what packaging Ubuntu uses though it's based off Debian so they may have a .deb package you can install it with, or just use the tar.gz file (which I think it also contains the compiled binaries so no need for compiling). Here's the link to winetools http://www.von-thadden.de/Joachim/WineTools/ I think you'll need to install the MSI package, then try the Dreamweaver setup installation using WINE although, I haven't seen anyone saying they've had any success in doing so. I'm not sure how old these are, but WINE might be able to run it now, I'm not sure. Since I can't find any success on it, I may attempt to install it, since I do have Dreamweaver MX which I could try to install, but I won't start that till the weekends. Cheers, MC
