  1. So... just to make this clearer, (I'm not really good at .htaccess and only know some basic commands) if I were to make this work for multiple files (i.e. if I were to use phpBB3, and wanted to change the "viewtopic.php", and "viewforum.php" ones to something cleaner I would change the code to something like this:? RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^(.+)/([0-9]+)/?$ viewtopic.php?f=*RewriteRule ^(.+)/([0-9]+)/?$ viewforum.php?f=* Would that work? Does it even support wildcards? Or do I have to spend time installing a SEO modification?
  2. Just expanding on that, if you are using files which might be of a security risk, you CAN place them in the folder above /public_html/ which is your <cpanel-username>... That way, unless "someone" has direct access to your files either through secure FTP or your cPanel account, they cannot access it through "the web" even though what ever file you might be needing can "call" on it... A good example of this would be if you were creating a script that needs access to a database... You might have a "config.php" which is no problem if you have it CHMOD'd to 644... But if a person has an "authenticated" FTP access then they will be able to access it... However (not 100% sure about this though), if you have a "secondary" or "backup" FTP that has been compromised they might not be able to go any higher than "/public_html/" meaning that "config.php" is still safe... But if you're "root" account is compromised, there is no way to stop any file from being read unless you encrypt it using, I don't know... 256-bit AES with a 64 letter password... Enough security talk... Anyway... If you're new to hosting, I would recommend you read the RULES if you already have... then... happy Xisto'ing... Java is allowed... unlike many other free hosting services, Xisto gives every feature to you provided it does not compromise the security or speed of their dedicated Xisto server... You are able to upload file directly to your web root, you have access to change mime types, .htaccess files, SQL, unlimited e-mail accounts, the list goes on... Xisto is truly an unbeatable service, stay out of the bad habits of spamming and breaking the rules of Xisto Board and hosting (i.e. no hosting large files), and you'll be fine (otherwise face the wrath of a proSilver edition Jacket'd Bertie! ) Also, you need to list more things you want to know... I could get, heck 20 or 30 credits if I went ranting on about every scenario a possible webmaster can face in his/her webmaster-time... But go on and try out the hosting, you'll eventually get the hang of using cPanel effectively... If you get stuck, all the *active* members of Xisto are here to help!
  3. aww... someone brought back a 4-year-old topic... I first just got randomly really interested in HTML... back then, I could make unnecessarily simple websites... I learned by viewing source of websites and learning what each tag did... Then, I found some very old and seriously outdated HTML tutorial books covered in dust in underneath the stairs... I started reading them, they didn't really teach me any new tags, just expanded on what the tags could do and stuff... I then found W3Schools (URL is : http://www.w3schools.com/ for those that don't know) I first, learned HTML 4.01 Transitional, ONLY... Then I started being curious and clicked on "XHTML", after I read the description, I started to learn XHTML 1.0 Transitional... I learned it for a while until I joined Xisto and saw a post made by "jlhaslip" that said something about XHTML 1.0 Strict being the best language to learn, then i decided to check it out... At first, I didn't like XHTML 1.0 Strict because there was alot of things I couldn't do that I got used to doing (i.e. the target="_blank" tags), but then I persisted and eventually got the hang of it... I'm now trying to incorporate XHTML 1.1 native code into my website... currently my website validates as valid XHTML 1.1 but with a XML encoding warning...
  4. That would depend, I would have imagined a piece of incredibly expensive piece of software like Autodesk's 3sd Max 2009 to have like a shiny GUI that looks good, but then when I actually looked at it, it looked like the Microsoft Office XP GUI (which is like running on a "Windows Old Theme"), but for that I can understand why... Better GUI equals more RAM usage... So that is the most likely reason why many software have bad GUI's..Personally, if I were to choose between any piece of software, I look at the screenshots, which ever one that looks better, I will probably most likely get that one... Without even reading the comparison...GUI IS a very important part of any software if any person wants it to market well because there are so many software that does the same thing...
  5. Sure, having a great-looking desktop is a great way to present your computer to friends or at conventions and stuff... But I prefer just a basic GUI...Not the Windows 95 GUI but more like Windows XP Media Centre Edition (MCE) with the official "Royal Theme" on it... That was a great theme...But anyway... The GUI doesn't have to be the most important part of an operating system... I mean take a look at command-line Unix as an example, probably THE most basic GUI ever, and so many web servers still use it these days! All I need for a GUI is a "Start Button" with the "My Documents", "My Music", "My Videos", "My Pictures", etc, and then with the "Control Panel" and "Search" and that, and with a Recently opened Programs and a "All Programs" thing... With it, all the default stuff... Then moving on, the "Quick-Launch" Panel (Not sure if it is actually called that, its the place right of the start button)... With cftmon.exe and the Language button, then the windows tray...Command Prompt is a must and maybe the Ultimate/Business/Enterprise versions should also have the Windows SDK and DirectX SDK...DirectX10 is a must and should (like Windows Vista) scale its RAM usage and stuff like that to match your computer, and it should not have a huge amount of processes running, just one for the Kernel, one for GUI, one for Aero, one for Sidebar, and stuff, and that should be it! There is not need having maybe six or seven "svhost.exe"'s when they can probably make it into one file for easier management and take all the unecessary stuff out of it...They need to work on security issues FIRST, and then onto how fast it is going to be and that and last of all GUI and other luxuries and eye-candy...
  6. I agree! By all means, Firefox 3 is the best browser that has come out...Everything is good except for the fact the Firefox 3 "stops responding" for a second or two when a download finishes downloading...Another thing is the fact that not many themes support it...However, I was downloading this particular file yesterday and watched as it finished and in the status bar it said, "Downloading..." then quickly turned to "Scanning for Viruses", and then "Download Complete"... I never knew Firefox 3 had a built-in virus scanner, or maybe it used my NOD32 (which is unlikely because no popup of NOD32 scanning ever pop'd up...Firefox 3 is a great browser and the built-in adaptive search for the URL bar is a great way to know what page was which for what...
  7. Like I always say... "Take Sleeping Pills as if they were Suicide Pills"Sleeping pills are deadly if misused (as you should know, many deaths of celebrities are because of sleeping pill overdose or sleeping pill mis-use)If you are on sleeping pills, never just suddenly stop... You might be able to just suddenly stop an sleep normal but that is very unlikely. Like if you take a pill every night before you go to sleep, cut the pill in half and take just half the pill every night for a week or so, and then later a quarter of a pill, at first it will be a little hard to go to sleep, but soon you should be able to cope without taking any sleeping pills at all!Remember "Take sleeping pills as if they were suicide pills" good luck not taking any sleeping pills!
  8. o.OI need a password reset please... My homepage is up, but my I can in no way, see my forums anymore... it just gives the apache configuration is successful page... Notice from BuffaloHELP: Sent new password. Check to see if your DB has username associated. If not, simply create username (same as before) and associate to your database. It will bring it right back.
  9. AHK! I can live for as long as I wanted to without a computer...I mean, sure it is very useful in all sorts of things, but you don't have to have a computer control your life...It is better to not sit in front of the computer all day...People that know me always think of me as a "person who can't live without a computer", but I can...
  10. You don't extract it to "root", you extract the zip in the "public_html" folder, where then you would type in your URL bar "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; or where-ever the install directory is located, and follow the instructions, but if it requires a MySQL database set-up, then log in into cPanel, scroll down, and click "MySQL databases", create a new database, and a new user, grant all permissions for the user to that database, and put in your MySQL details, which should be "yourtrap17subdomain_databasename", and user "yourtrap17subdomain_useraccount", and just type in password normally...You should be all right to go... if you have any problems, go check the manufacturer's manual/FAQ, or just ask us here, at Xisto!

  12. So... Mods/Admins... This ain't a review... this topic was designed to be a discussion on the "DREAM package"... But if you feel that this topic is posted in the wrong section of the forum, please by all means, move it... Anyway... So today, I was searching the web and came across a website with advertisements to their host "Site5", so I clicked on that link and guess what I saw? And WOW! I thought! This is such a fake! I mean, I was searching up webhosts about 2 years ago and found this place where you can order web-hosting... One of my online friends was hosted with them, and he referred me to it... It had about the same as Xisto for about $1.50/m and you can order more, I was just playing around with what they have to offer, and there was an option for "Unlimited Bandwidth" and "Unlimited Webspace", after checking those checkboxes, the monthly price quickly jumped to around $150.00/m... So I so do not believe that a webhost provider can legitimately have "Unlimited Bandwidth", "Unlimited Webspace" just for $5.00/month! That's horrendous! And so, I decided to "dig deeper", and found this at the bottom of their "hosting packages" page... And read it... But it said "Unlimited Bandwidth", so why would there be a "Bandwidth overage is charged at a rate of $2.50/GB", and you'd have to sign a 60-month contract... But maybe it is real, but the support and uptime is so bad, it forces people to quit paying them a large amount of moneyto compensate for the huge loss... I'd say, if anything looks dodgy or doesn't add up, don't do/try it! No really, DON'T! So, what's YOUR opinion?
  13. This is a SCAM, not only have I read so many topics across Google saying that this is a SCAM, but I have also tried this out for myself, I haven't referred anyone, and on the accunt got $40 and BAM! The next day I try to log in it just came up with an error... You can also tell the site is dodgy because of the extremely poorly done logo, all they did was blur the tree, smudge the tree, and crop'd it out and put it in the picture... Atleat you didn't post a referral link... :DBut you can try this if you want, but all you're gonna get is an error message saying your account is deleted or your account has been banned because of false referrals... (I knew it was a SCAM since I got the second error message but didn't refer anyone!)If you sign up, you're just wasting your time... but don't ask me why you suddenly couldn't get into your account...
  14. You either get a TLD (i.e. http://ww38.yoursite.com/, http://www.yoursite.net/, etc) or just use .co.nr, I personally use them, and instead of re-directing, they put your website in a frame (which really hurts SEO, as not many search engines index within frames...), but it looks a lot more professional (in my opinion) and is free...With TLDs you can easily get one for free for one year if you get 280 hosting credits and apply for a TLD, so money isn't an issue for TLD as long as you have time...I would recommend you have a TLD anyway because changing domains isn't an easy task... So unless you have some spare money or you've got 280 hosting credits, just get a .co.nr domain and I would forget about .uni.cc, .co.cc and all that... good luck webmaster...
  15. I'm using Firefox 3 right now, I had the Firefox 3 Beta 5, but now I've got the download-day edition...It's great and the new "Bible Fox-Blue" theme looks really good on it... sadly some of my extensions won't work on Firefox 3 (though the ones I like best are available (NoScript, and AdblockPlus))I would highly recommend people to use Firefox whenever they can and only use other browsers when absolutely necessary...Firefox 3 slows down and stops responding all-together when a download finishes or I'm loading up a Java client just for 2-3 seconds, though not very bad, gets really annoying sometimes... I just wonder if Firefox 3 passes Acid-Test 2...
  16. That'll depend, if you're willing to make a client (.exe) then no, .NET will be a lot better, but for web-based text-based games (like, stargatewars), um... still no... Yoou'll need server scripting to do that (for example php, mysql, perl, oracle) etc... If you're starting your own text-based MMORPG (like Stargatewars), then I would recommend you start off with a Kings of Chaos Clone, they are almost everywhere on the net now, and even though they have so many SQL injection holes, and bugs, its a great way to start your own MMORPG that is text-based, and browser-based...Moving on to executable MMORPGs (like, I don't know... World of Warcraft?), you'll need a game engine for that, depends what you need the engine to do, engines like FPS creator or Game Maker aren't really good as they are somewhat "too basic" and you won't learn anything... But I would recommend something like the OGRE3D engine for you as it is free and has a very large community that can back you up...And last thing... Most of us have dreams of making a game ourselves that can rival commercial games and be rich, some of us will succeed (like Linus Torvalds (the creator of Linux operating system)), but you've got to remember that unless you and your team has lots of experience and time devoted to this, the game will never be completed, and it might never even be started! So going on to good news now... With C++, it is only for applications and cannot be web-based, to make something like Runescape, you'll need to learn JAVA or .NET, but for something like StargateWars, just PHP and SQL would be fine, though if you're extra security conscience, I would recommend you learn PERL and SQL... So good luck making your game (not a bit sarcastic), and remember that the Xisto community are always here and willing to help!
  17. Well, I live in Australia, and I dislike my ISP (Telstra Bigpond)My stated connection speed is 1500KBPS down, and 128KBPS up... Speed isn't that great, and I'm considering upgrading to ADSL2+ very soon...I currently pay around AU$75 for a 1500KBPS/128KBPS 25GB Liberty Plan (speed is throttled to 64KBPS/64KBPS if I go over 25GB, download/upload over the limit is free (so no, 0.01c per MB or anything like that ))I would like to go to TPG's ADSL2+ 24MBPS/512KBPS? (not 100% certain about the upload speed) for around AU$70 with 150GB (40GB peak times, 110GB off-peak), hopefully, the contract termination fee right now is under AU$200...
  18. Oh yeah, just to add something extra...For compressing files, I would recommend Zip, or RAR for normal files, lots of small files, or maybe practically anything... But if you're unsure on if you're going to use a program/movie/game etc, I would recommend that you compress it using an EXTREMELY efficient compressing program...That program is called UHARC, it is command-line based, but for those who aren't familiar with command-line based applications, use WinUHA (which is basically UHARC with a GUI, a bit less compressing efficiency...)They can compress things like ZIP and/or RAR (but the only bad thing about it, is it's like an SFX archive, you can only unzip the entire directory stored in the compressed file), but if you're patient (or maybe, you have an abnormally fast computer) try compressing your files with UHARC on highest priority, with the largest dictionary and all that, and you should be able to compress a file like 1GB down to something like 120MB, but the primary problem with this, is it'll take almost twice as long to decompress, so only use UHARC/WinUHA to compress files that are abnormally large and you might not need in the near future
  19. I think I replied to a topic like this before, but couldn't find my post, so I'll just post here anyways... :DI normally use just Notepad ++ for most of my editing, although for some serious projects, I use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3...Notepad ++ is fast, simple, reliable, free, and great for the good 'ol "quick edit" but for stuff like heavily redesigning something or making something from scratch, I use Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, it auto-completes tags (I know they are "n00b" but they are helpful, and save a lot of time spending unnecessary time closing tags...But for most of my editing, I just use Notepad ++, I just sometimes cannot be "stuffed" opening and closing Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, (it taks like 2 minutes to open and about 30 seconds to close, and I'm only patient while playing games!)... So, there 'ya go! I mostly use Notepad ++... other people should also use Notepad++ as an extremely good alternative to those big and expensive editing tools...Good luck Designing web :(EDIT: I just forgot to mention, that I also use some photoshop for making some of the graphics... Though I don't normally make much graphics... (personally, I prefer the classic XHTML 1.0 Strict + CSS)...
  20. Personally, I like 1.5's gameplay the best, but the graphics plainly was extremely bad... So 1.6 was slightly better. Source is completely ruined mainly because it just had plain TOO many hackers and glitches... But that wasn't the end of it. I thought Counter-Strike: Source would be a good game, but man was I wrong! Many things you can do in 1.5/1.6, you can't even remotely try to imitate on Counter Strike Source! Though, personally Condition Zero was my personal favourite, gameplay was good, graphics were a bit bad, but it ran at like approximately 110 frames per second on my computer. AND it even had a singleplayer campaign! So I would say Counter Strike Condition Zero would cut it today
  21. So, some of you might know about this already but, anyways... The other day I was trying to install a game but did not have the necessary disk space, so I deleted files that I will not use, and other files that I do not need... I compressed some files that I might use later in the future... And just doing that got me back around two to three gigabytes of free hard disk space... But that's not enough, the game needed 6 gigabytes of free disk space! So what did I do next? I ran CCleaner... It took a while yes, but soon it free'd another 2 gigabytes... ARRGH! Still another gigabyte to go before the game can be installed! So I was "perusing" around my hard drive and checking file sizes... And I came up to this particular folder... which should be [WINDOWS INSTALLATION DRIVE]:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\ Which when left to default should be C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\ I went inside the folder... and WHAT?! There's about an entire gigabyte of things I never need in there! ARRGH! Recorded TV, Shared Music, Shared Video, Shared Pictures! What were Microsoft thinking when they put this stuff in? So I deleted all of it! Well, almost all of it, I left the "Shared Pictures" folder alone, as personally, I like them... So a step to step process of getting disk space that Microsoft has used without you knowing... 1. Go through your Hard Drive and delete all files that you no longer need... 2. Compress files that you might need, but won't be using them anytime soon... 3. Run CCleaner, URL is /ccleaner 4. You should also try to run Windows Disk Cleaner, just in case you want to delete Windows System Restore Points except the last one 5. Delete what you don't need in the "Shared Documents" folder (which usually is, everything!) and BAM! you've reclaimed so many disk space especially if you're using a hard drive with pretty low space (i.e. me ) Good luck clearing out unecessary files!
  22. I personally use "about:blank" it loads instantly, and does not require an internet connection of any sort, going to be my homepage for a L-O-N-G time.., though I had Google as my homepage for about a month several months back...
  23. Well, then maybe we could put portable fusion reactors on the cars and give 'em MBPT ion engines, after all, the MBPT thrusters DO provide up to 60000mN of thrust

    Sleep

I find that, if you want a good night's sleep, don't be anxious, and I always find that reading a book works unsually well, try not to eat lots of things before going to bed, and only use sleeping pills as suicide pills... Try to not play any games before sleeping and don't watch anything horror, action, or anything that has suspense, something like dr phil, or maybe read something like 5 most least used functions in php, or something you completely do not understand, i.e. something like how to create a hoverboard in 3 days with US$500, or something like that, also like jlhaslip said, try not to think very hard, and remember that sleeping pills are suicide pills... (no offence to those who take sleeping pills, but to those that do take them, STOP!)
  25. I have an idea to create a hovercar, not the kind we have now with the giant fans and the blanket of air, but the kind of hovercars you see on starwars... Now, if you think that this is impossible using current-day technology and are about to click away from this page, DON'T! Because you can make one of those hovercars using current day technology...So, I have no idea if this can actually be done mass-produced as the technology is currently under development and has lots of limitations, that would make it very hard to remove some of the limitations required to make the hovercar...Anyway, all you need is a water fuel cell (a tank full of water that uses electrolysis to separate hydrogen from oxygen, then burn them, turning them into water again, and the process starts again...), anyway, that is connected to a twin-linked ion engine. The ion engine by itself won't be powerful enough to sustain a stable lift on a 1-tonne car, but two will, but you will need lots and lots of complex algorithms to make both work in usison and as one ion engine. Anyway, you need to refill the water every once in a while, and you'll need to recharge the battery every once in a while, and don't forget that you need a constant supply of xenon (the inert gas that is used as propellant in ion engines)...Anyway, you'd need all of the above, after joining the ion engines, you'd need like 5 more to manage propulsion, and movement (i.e. strafe), but you cut that down, you'd need a separate tube that leads to the propulsion chamber, which of course will propel the car... But for movement, you'd need something other than ion engines, so as a substitute, you'd need an intake fan that would intake lots and lots of air, and compress it in a compressor unit, then you'd need to blow it out and while you're doing that, put a bit of hydrogen at optimal mix and spark it, BAM! The car has movement...So, you basically have one ion engine for "hovering", one ion engine for propulsion, and a compressor unit for movement...There is only one flaw with this, unless you'd want to waste so many litres of xenon, the car would accelerate so slowly, and might take up to 3-4 minutes to reach around 100km (guessed, don't have necessary algorithms to calculate ion engine throust capacity at near sea-level), so it would be really slow to speed up... That is probably the only flaw with this, and the higher the car goes, the less xenon it would require... So it may indeed make roads almost completely obsolete...
