  1. I apologize, but I felt that this fell under the topic at hand, since the discussion is about the availability and versatility of online wishlists on websites. Thus, people's views on them are valid, and I personally have found that no, I really don't like Amazon's wishlist much either, but it's the most understood out of all the ones I have, since it covers a wide range of topics, so that everyone can find something there that they can afford to buy for the person with the wishlist. Other, more specialized wishlists, such as Hot Topic, for example, may be a little harder for people to find others to get stuff for them on, since the other person may not understand and/or appreciate why they have that on their wishlist....just my two cents on the subject....besides, since there was already a topic about the best wallpaper sites, why would this be any less applicable?
  2. I'm sure everyone knows about the Amazon.com Wishlists, but what about other sites? What sites do you like to go to for them? Which ones do you find people actually having a higher chance of picking stuff from? For me, I have wishlists at Amazon, Hot Topic.com, and Playboy, though I'm working on one for the Express website as well, since I've found A LOT of stuff there recently that I have absolutely fallen in love with. So, what about the rest of you?
  3. For me, my addition to this list is livejournal and a couple of fanfiction archives that, due to their content, shall remain nameless. I try to remember to post on livejournal every day, since my livejournal is done in conjunction with another site of mine.
  4. Okay, so what you're saying is that .htaccess with them reading PHP files off of the root directory means that if I type in a wrong URL on the root directory, my special error page will show up, but if it's one of the subdomains, it won't, unless I have the same .htaccess format, with corresponding pages, in that subdirectory's folder? But, if I use the Cpanel method, since I'm posting the files/graphics with the full image path, it will work the same on both the root directory and subdomains?Just trying to make sure I've got this all straight, because I really don't wanna try and work on it only to have to do it again 45 different times (cuz that's how many subdomains I have).
  5. In my opinion, all these issues about the importance of content over design or vice versa all depend, as come may have already pointed out, on the intent and use of the website. For example, if I am putting together a corporate site for a Fortune 500 company, I'm going to have a different ratio in mind for content/design then, say, someone who's putting up a personal domain for the yucks of it to simply showcase the things they like to do. In the former's case, I would want a simplistic design, but a lot of content to explain more fully what this company is about. I would also try for ease of navigation, since you want people to be able to find what they need simply and efficiently, without as much hassle as possible. I would also want to update it as often as I could with current stats on what the company's plans are and so on.Now, for, say, a personal site, you have a slightly less stringent approach to when and how you update and where and how you design. I do agree, though, that simplicity and organization, no matter what the content of the site, should always be paramount. (That, and a nice spellchecker!) Anyways, you might like to have a bunch of pictures of friends and family, or maybe more text oriented information. But always try and keep it concise and in an organized manner, and try to at least update once every six months or so, if you can, so that people who visit know you're still alive.
  6. I saw that in cpanel, but wasn't entirely sure how to go about doing it, but I guess you just treat it like any other HTML document? Do I need to have the header section and such like that, or, if I'm doing that, would it simply be better to use the .htaccess file way instead? And by full image path, I assume you mean something such as http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/? Just trying to make sure I have everything right.
  7. I think this goes in here, since you need cpanel to make them, but how does one go about making custom error pages so that you see something different than the usual "This page is unavailable". I mean, for my domain, I want the 404s and such to give them links back to certain points in my domain. Any idea how to do that?
  8. IMHO, I've found that php is fine to simply design the page in Frontpage, but I also kinda cheat. I save the php file as an html file, and I'm usually able to view most of what that file contains, except for the content of the header.incv and footer.inc files...but I mainly use Frontpage simply to be able to get a visual look at what a page will look like. I can code from hand for much of anything...though, I've never tried to FTP up a php file via Frontpage. I've used WS_FTP and that seems to work just fine. Anybody got any comments on whether you prefer FTP or using Frontpage to publish a site? I've never gotten a definitive answer on that.
  9. I have to say I agree with derouge. I think that students today feel that they can rely on the internet more for facts than they should. When I was doing a research paper in college, my professor told us that we needed to be able to prove why internet sources were as reliable as the sources that we could have found in books or other reference materials. That is not to say that everything on the internet is garbage, but it's more like a needle in a haystack and you have to look carefully to find the true value of a piece of information off the internet. But, when it comes to the internet and information, especially for scholarly pursuits, I think that the world at large has gotten VERY lazy and wants the easy way to knowledge, which is usually not always the right way. IMHO, I think that people need to remember why we have books in the first place- so that other people can look up and verify that what you said was in the book really is. I mean, how many times have you bookmarked a website, because of something you found interesting, and when you go to look back at it a year later, the site's gone. Same in relation to research- if someone else cannot verify the sources sited in a book or article, what makes you think they'll put any credibility in the rest of your work, let alone that article?Just a little food for thought on the subject.
  10. After I posted this, I went back to the Livejournal FAQ, wondering if I'd missed something. I apparently hadn't read all the way down, where it explained where you could find the S2 ID. *palm meets forehead* I think I've got it all working now.
  11. No, what I want to do, is to put the INCLUDE tab on the page...I already know about how to put the HTML text into the header.inc and footer.inc pages. I just need to know how to figure out the S2ID and how to make the tables show up properly.
  12. One of the biggest reasons why Firefox has something on IE, (besides the tabbed pages, which is the coolest), is that a lot of viruses are specifically designed to invade your computer through loopholes in IE. Now, people are figuring out that web surfers have figured this out, so they may try to find holes in Firefox too, but, for the time being, it really cuts down on the amount of viruses via surfing the web that you can catch on your computer. Another thing is that Firefox seems to have some sort of intergrated popup blocker that blocks most, if not all, of popup ads, which, again, is very cool.
  13. Things like this just illustrates what happens when you have a bunch of bored people with WAY too much time on their hands. lolSeriously, though, googlebombing sucks for the people it's aimed at, and considering I'm a big believer in karma nowadays, it would be better to think it's funny/sad (depending on your political leaning) then wonder why someone would think that something that malicious (and it is, when you sit down and think about it) would be seen as seriously funny?Just my two cents on the subject.
  14. Thanks, macace...What I found worked better was to actually lighten the background about 20% as well as change the text to black...I think it works better now.
  15. Okay, it's been ten days since I posted this...doesn't anyone here know how to help me with this? Anything would be greatly appreciated!
  16. I still have to say that I agree with AGK about that Lycos, Angelfire and the like are really good for those starting out in wbe design, because they're really good about giving it all to you step by step if you need it. Besides, once they advance beyond novices, they generally realize that the host they're with won't do what they need it to (i.e. mySQL) and go on to something bigger and better. It's all a learning process. I mean, none of you can't tell me that you all didn't start out with one of these hosts when you started web design? I know I did...Angelfire page builder. I think it's stupid now, but back then, I didn't know any better. And I think that's the big difference. I think some of us have forgotten what it was like to just be starting out in this big world wide web, and since everybody and their friends has a geocities page, for example, for those that didn't know any better, they thought geocities was the best. It's only after you've been around the block awhile, so to speak, that you realize that your visitors don't want popup ads or slow upload speeds, and such, and you act accordingly. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that yes, Lycos may not be what people of more experience need in a web host, but for those that it works for (i.e. newbies), I personally believe it works just fine.
  17. Yeah...sorry. Wasn't trying to bite your head off or nothin' like that. Personally, I would think that the Admin would be more likely able to answer your questions about that. What I did is I started this post partially to get admin's attention, but also to create discussion since I'm sure that things like this can happen from time to time for whatever reason. However, at the same time I posted, I also emailed on of the online admin to let them know about the problem I seemed to be having, since, as everyone knows, admin don't always take the time to read ever single post ever created. But yeah, as per your dilemma, talk to some of the admin about it, since they'd be more able to answer it than me, a lowly peon.
  18. Well, Guru, that's actually a slightly different situation, since I had never received an email informing me that my account was suspended. IMHO, I think the "account suspended" page on my domain was simply because that somehow due to the cleanup script the admin did over the weekend, it somehow disrupted something about the script on many of my php pages, and since those were mostly the index pages, they needed some sort of page to put there...not sure entirely that such was the case, but you're talking about having recieved suspension notification, which is a different situation than what I started discussion here on.
  19. Well, it could be a combination of the two, solanky...forgot that part, cuz when I ticketed them, I had like 10 days of credits. As for you, Andrwxs, yes, EVERYTHING was still there- files and all.
  20. I put in the ticket at 1:45 pm their time on September 17th, and I recieved a message that it was completed at 12:01 am September 18th, so not that long at all. Everything is still there in working order...I think it only took as long as it did because 1:45 pm my time was apparently 8:45 pm their time...but, other than that 11 hours is NOT that long. I'm happy and I'm staying right here with Xisto!
  21. Yeah, I got a ticket too, but since it's Sunday now, they may not work on it until tomorrow...I hope not, but that's how tech support works sometimes. However, I still think that a couple of days downtime is still better than a couple of weeks or months, like with some free web hosting.
  22. Yes, this is more and more looking like someone decided to have some fun trying to hack into some Xisto sites...my own has been affected, but I luckily keep backups of everything, including database data.
  23. Your best bet is to do the same thing I did, Solanky, and email tech support at the email above...I think it all has to do with the cleanup script they did...probably affected all the accounts with php, is my guess.
  24. Okay, not a complete newbie when it comes to PHP (I can fumble my way around most of the time), but I'm trying to figure out how to embed my livejournal into a frames page (or something like it) for one of my other websites...Yes, livejournal has a link for it, but they expect you to already have some experience in php, and I don't know if I'm as adept in it as I would like, so I figured I'd ask people here who probably know more about it than I do. Okay, here's a small screenshot of what I'm trying to do (it's purposefully tacky looking because I'm trying to keep this PG-13, but the site I'm using it for....isn't.): Anyways, that's what I want to do...it's frames for that layout, but the site I'm going to be using it for uses tables, hence my need for php instead of the simpler HTML frames. Anyway, the link directly to the PHP tutorial for livejournal is here. For purpose of the differences in PHP coding between the two systems, my livejournal uses S2. Now, my big problem is a couple of things...one, for those of you who might have a livejournal on the S2 system, I don't know how to find out where include "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;. "exampleusername/?s2id=S2 ID";S2 ID is...I know that the best way to put the livejournal in now would be to use the INCLUDE coding, but that means that I have to hope that 1) the server this website is going on supports php and 2) that the include won't mess up. Anyways, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
  25. I have been a faithful contributor to the discussions on these boards, and yet I woke up this morning to find that where my homepage used to be is an account suspended page...any reason why this would be, considering I don't spam, add logical thoughts to discussions, and still have 5 days of credits, as far as I know?
