  1. Okay, felt this would be the best place to ask, but, when it comes to websites and design aspects, which do you prefer, especially as regards graphics: simple graphics with text and pics that don't overwhelm things, or busier ones, especially if you're looking at a business site, with more graphic explanation of what the site's about? I ask this because I'm trying to settle a disagreement between me and my guy about this. He says that you need more than just a couple of pics in a button/graphic to make it interesting for the people looking at this business site. I've always thought that the best sites were the more simplistic ones....what do ya'll think?
  2. well, what kind of HTML codes were you looking for? I say this because there are some specialized sites out there for, say web layouts, but also ones that only deal with specific kinds of HTML codes. What did you want?
  3. I'm sorry that imajin's not going to be with us, but, just in case there are people out there wanting to be able to post blogs on their site without having to use mySQL, I've found a little loophole in the way blogger is run that enables you to publish their blogger "software" as php files...for example, on the "PUBLISHING" page under the Settings tag, where it asks for the blog filename, you put something like "index.php" and it formats the main blog page correctly according to the header.inc and footer.inc php files on your server, like I have it on mine, and just do the same when it asks for the archiving filename on the "ARCHIVING" page under the same tag. Found this out by accident, but seems to work seamlessly for me, and I don't have to worry about mySQL, since they always have a copy on blogger.com's servers.
  4. other than w3school, is there any other main sites about php that may be geared more towards newbies or, say people like me that have a lot of HTML experience, but not that much when it comes to php and its inherent "programming" aspect?
  5. My boyfriend's aunt and cousin are both addicted to this game...his cousin used to spend all his free time playing this game, and now his aunt does it too. I agree that anything in moderation can be a good thing, but most people into roleplaying games like this have a tendency to go too far...I don't see things like Warcraft being a good thing at all.
  6. I don't know how good it might be for comparing more than prices about digital cameras at this point, but has anyone ever heard of or tried http://www.pricegrabber.com/?ut=95385382648b3aa3? I've found them to be rather competetive with such sites as overstock.com on prices they can find for things.
  7. I have two blogs that I actively post in, and one I kinda sorta do from time to time. The two main ones are my livejournal, which is more about my adult work and adult job and the blogger one is mainly for nevernormal.com updates and such. I sometimes post things from my other two blogs to my myspace blog, but I highly prefer livejournal and blogger over myspace. I also read something in yesterday's Dear Abby about the cautionary needs about blogs and potential job hunting...it's the second letter down: http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/2005/12/4/widow-realizes-the-perfect-gift-is
  8. Wow, thanks for the heads up about a great site! Wonderful layouts...may try one of them out for a new site of mine...dunno yet. I have this thing about trying to do things on my own whenever I can, except when it comes to my livejournal layout, cuz I sooo don't know what I'm doing there. But what about the rest of you? Do you see other peoples' designs as a last resort when you get fried about design ideas, or do you feel it's okay to use them (with proper credit, of course) if you like the design and it goes with your site ideas?
  9. Okay, I only have one stock image site to add, but this one is HUGE and has always been a big help to me when I want to find freeware graphics I won't get yelled at for using: gettyimages.com
  10. Okay, I've been looking all over the web, and even tried googling it (without much help) and the majority of the templates I can find seem to be geared more towards blogger...I'm sure there's a way to work around it, but I have a feeling it would be more trouble than it would be worth. So far, the only website I've found with LJ templates is createblog.com. Does anyone know of any other ones? Ones that I wouldn't necessarily have to pay for? (I have a paid livejournal account, so I can pretty much use any kind of layout.)
  11. Getting back to the task at hand, it seemed like bnbrown had more than two questions, or would you say that that's all you had to ask about, because, from the title of your post, it seemed like you had a lot of questions...have you thought about maybe trying to put them all into one post, since one big post (I believe) counts as more days than multiple small posts? Just a thought.
  12. I think he means the Rokr with Itunes from Cingular. As for the capabilities, I looked it over a few days ago, and it looks like a nice phone, but it has a couple of drawbacks. 1) The only way to get music on this phone is to subscribe to Itunes, which typically charges about $1 a song (99 cents, if you wanna get technical) and the Rokr can hold about 100 songs, so, if you wanted to fill up the data card, you'd spend about another $100 just to get it outfitted. And, if that wasn't enough of a slap in the face (that and the fact that the retail price on the Rokr, not counting in the price of a two year plan, is $150), the nice big media card that comes with it is very hard to be able to access and get into and out of the phone. If you want just a basic phone, there's plenty of other choices that won't crack your wallet as much. Heck, if you want a phone that plays mp3s, the Nokia 6682 has the same capabilities, but you can just save mp3 files direct from your computer to the data card that's easier accessible that the one on the Rokr....but, it's only available, as of yet, by calling Cingular directly....that and my boyfriend says it has bugs in the text messaging receiving area, but other than that, he loves his new toy! lol
  13. That seems to be the case, since I've only been unlucky enough to try and access things twice during maintenance, but, on the good side, I think the reason why the mySQL's down may be that part of the maintenance is to back said SQL up...who knows?
  14. okay, it happened again...prolly just maintenance, but if that was the case, wouldn't the Admin notify us or something? Just wondering...not criticizing.
  15. Sounds kinda like my guy's Nokia 6682, though I don't think it has all those capabilities...comes with a 64KB memory card, with cool hidden camera features and mp3 player, even though I don't think it's got Real Player...he got it direct from Cingular, since it's not out in stores yet, and it apparently still has some bugs in it. He tried to replace it with the iTunes Rokr, but that thing's a ripoff, cuz, even though it's got a bigger memory card, the only way to play music on that one is to buy the software, and pay 99 cents per song, which, since it has capacity for about 100 songs, means you shell out an extra $100 or so for the songs, on top of the $100/$200 you pay for the phone! Personally, I'm gonna wait til they have a nice affordable one like the Nokia...without the bugs.
  16. Darn, pressed the enter button instead of Shift, so here's the rest of the post. The information in the CSS will specify what the DIV looks like, and I would assume you'd just link directly to your CSS file from the files with the DIV layers. And if you have different DIVs that you want to look different from the #info section, just do so, with just naming them something else, like either #info2 or #funstuff or whatever you feel like. Hope some of my tips helped. If not, bash me over the head with a wet noodle!
  17. Actually, from the HTML browsing I've done, since I think I do much the same thing on my website, Nevernormal.com, there's actually two ways to do it: the Javascript vizsky mentioned and also you can use PHP to do the same thing. First, you create the basic layout for what you want as a basic HTML file. (I do it this way because I'm a visual designer and need to see how it's going to look like in the end.) You just cut and paste the code that's semi-static (i.e. the navigation) into a header.inc file as is. To use my website as an example, if you look at the index page code, everything up to this line: <DIV style="LEFT: 322; WIDTH: 540; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 303;> goes into my header.inc file. Then I have the different pages, like my blog on the main one. However, I also have separate php pages with other malleable info, such as websites and such. I'm not that good at explaining how I go about doing the separate pages, but there's a way to put more than one page of info onto one php file, and access it all from that one file. It's kinda like HTML bookmarks, but instead of you still having the whole page there, you actually just pull out the specific info for that "bookmark" of the document. Or, there's this way to specify what happens in the specific div layers in CSS...which may be more along what you want...I though it could be a couple of things, hence the longwinded post. Okay, say you have a layout with three DIV layers: left with navigation, center with the basic changing pages, and right with more information about the site. Now, you want the left (hereafter known as info) and the right (hereafter known as updates) to have a different background to the center navigation section. So, in the DIV section, much like you see in the code above, you want to classify it as "info". So, what you do in the HTML document is this: <DIV id=info> Now, why not all the other info into the HTML? Because it's all in the css document. In the CSS, you put this information, exactly as is: #info { padding:2; left: 5px; width: 225px; position: absolute; top: 5px; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000}
  18. Not to sidetrack too much, since he did mention it in his original post, but I would think that scholar.google would be a very good thing, especially for college students or anyone wanting a validity test kinda thing for the information they're searching for. I mean, how often have you heard that you have to closely document any internet source you use in papers/research, not only because you never can be sure if the site's really going to be there tomorrow or even if it's valid enough to stand up to the standards of the research community. I'm not saying that the information this search pulls up is AUTOMATICALLY valid or better than what you might find searching another way, but it sure makes it a little easier, don't you think?
  19. Personally, as I'm sure it's been mentioned a couple of times, but I would think that what you use and utilize would depend on what you're using the computer for...like, for a friend of mine that basically only uses his laptop for PC DJ and doesn't go on the internet much, if at all, doesn't really need to have a lot of bells and whistles. However, on the other side of the coin, if you're using the internet a lot, especially if you run all over the internet, you'd probably need more of the safeguards listed here than my DJ friend. Just my two cents.
  20. All I can think of to say about who dreamed this up is "The only difference between men and boys is the size and complexity of all of their toys!"
  21. I've gotta question: does programming only classify stuff like C, Java, Perl, etc, or does it include, by definition, php, asp, javascript, et al? Just something that's always been on my mind.
  22. How's this for an idea: Someone make an Xisto website that's nothing more than a searchable database about this, using mySQL to classify it all? I probably could do it, but I don't know how to do the searchable bit of it all...and let people submit hosts they know about? I could probably do it, but need help with the searching.
  23. Insanity, you said you want free web templates to co-use with PHP...what exactly did you mean? Did you mean a php-based site layout or one that would intergrate with php and mySQL? Because if it's the former, I could probably try to make you one, but as for websites about them....sorry, I don't think I know of any besides those already mentioned, though you could find a lot of template site links at http://ww2.websoup.org/?folio=9POR7JU99.
  24. Personally, I don't know what's worse- the acronyms that are found in emails (chat, I believe, is a separate story entirely) or the way some people "talk" in emails. Whatever happened to good punctuation, full sentences, and words like you, to or too, and are were typed out in full? I mean, I understand the occasional "u" in a casual email to a friend, but I have a feeling that the people who do that don't really care about how they come across to people, especially professionals.I mean, I recently started putting out a profile on some dating sites, and most of the people I've recieved replies from have been articulate. But there's just been a couple where it's all "u r the 1 4 me" and baloney like that. I don't know about you, but for me, that makes the other person come across as lazy and borderline stupid, because he doesn't seem to care enough to put the effort into typing concisely and accurately to try for a better chance at me being interested in talking more with him. Anybody else find this laziness in typing a horrifying new trend or is it just me?
  25. I, too, had seen the little EM on some sites I'd look at, but thanks for explaining what it was and why it's better than px...that plus, I've always found specifying in PX didn't give me as much versatility as I would have liked for the size of fonts...I mean, sometimes I wanted it small, but 6pt type in some fonts was still too big...one question tho. Does the PX vs. EM only work with HTML documents and the like (php, asp, etc) or do you know if you can apply it to, say, Photoshop?
