  1. Don't make an impression based on screenshot. They are planning to make that os as an mac os clone in terms of look and feel. The old version jupiter might looks like xubuntu but in reality they are not. They love ios display and making changes in gnome to do that.As for xfce i am not much comfortable with it for many reasons. Its not polished like gnome. I wanted something like gnome 2.8 file manager and metacity. I am literally searching for better gnome replacement. Anothe point on elementary is that- new release which is based on ubuntu 12.04 is likely to have more edit to make it look like ios. I know for sure this is not the os that i am looking for.
  2. My old computer is sent for repair-motherboard issue. I am posting this via mobile. I find it hard to use mobile for work. I just cant live without laptops and desktop.I dont think i can stand two weeks like that. Lol. It is really hard to just watch tv and miss computers. Atleast for me to do things everday.
  3. Maybe they are going to enter in market to compete with others with their taizen os. I just checked that meego developers are moved to taizen.Another point is that amd is also jumping into arm processor race with one commercial OS. So i guess it is natural for other arm processor vendor to jump in this. Looking forward to some more in this.
  4. Hud is still better than windows tiles, atleast it is not hurting my desktop experience. I find tiles hard to use for my usage for desktop experience. Another thing is tablets are not for desktop experience. 7 or 10 inch tablets are useless for video and games. I found ipad tablet useless for programming and games. This difference and the small screen of tablet makes windows 8 only for that. How good windows is for doing programming? Quick gameplay? Shortkey based tray tasks? Thinking in that direction is going to answer some of those question related to windows 8. Another point how rational is having same interface for all devices are? The way desktop and laptop are purged without cheap display maket for big screen, makes me think tablets are overhyped and people are fool to pay high amount for them.
  5. You can use online backup services like dropbox, amazon s3, jungle disk and many other services. SOme of them are free for 1gb or so and then they charge for more files and bandwidth. So that is one way to save files if your Internet connection is good and by good i mean 2mb/sec or higher. This is to ensure that you can download and upload higher amount of data in short time.As for offline backups. I think using USB disk of amount 8gb for minor data backup and using 40gb or even higher for normal system backup if you're average computer user is enough in my opinion. You can always try to use the HD or USB as per your choice. I think USB are good these days because you can move and use them on multiple computers without compatibility issues. If your computer lost the data and can't boot the operating system. Best way is to get ubuntu or some linux rescure cd and then use it to backup data on usb. I did the same last week and my data is now backed up. Hope this helps you to take backup.
  6. The very idea of building same interface for both desktop and mobile as same is making me feel nervous. This is happening in almost every OS be it mac, linux or windows. I don't understand what these guys have even thinking about the problem. Using icons and spalsh boxes instead of simple menus, just for the sake of using screen real estate is useless. I know developers and wanna-be programmers disagree with that and hence the results.I also think that using same display on both is not a good thing at all. It just makes things different. I dont want android as my os on desktop. I don't want crappy cellphone display as desktop. I want my own wallpaper and ability to use icons on desktop. Seriously tiles are boring and useless. Just because they look good on phone doesnt mean they look good on desktop. Some of the developers are doing the designs for the sake of it and literally making crap rounds of designs. Look at elementary OS and their new crappy design. As per their new interface, there will be no desktop icons and no minimize button. I can only imagine where they'll go with too much over simplification and frugal thinking.I don't understand where this crappy design techniques are leading us these days. I don't like HUD on ubuntu, Tiles on windows and can't afford mac for everyday use. I just don't know why we don't have a choice after paying enough money on these devices and OSs. It looks like i am on my way to use XFCE or similar type of display managers.
  7. As for screen goes. I don't think laptops are movie friendly. Try viewing laptop by sleeping on bed and keep the laptop on table in front of you on some table. Increase the distance and see the quality of picture. This is where tv and desktop displays win over laptop. Ofcourse you can connect it to bigger display using HDMI port but then again you know what and how things happen in it where you get slow picture based on laptop gpu.So my preference in case of movie and gaming is always the desktop. I do think for some casual games, laptops are good. For example alienware and macs are good at screen so for sure there are some good laptops. Just that they are expensive. You have to spend a lot of money in order to get that picture quality. I don't think it is comparable with desktop in such case. One more thing which i agree here is stealing. I know we take laptop everywhere and for that reason it is good. Desktop get stolen too in some cases. But that seems to be rare in comparison of the laptops. Pricing is dropping everyday for both laptops and desktop, so it is interesting to see where things go as tablets increase.
  8. I don't know if it's only apple. I have seen that Sony erricssons old models which were produced before 2011 are still not OS independent. You can't just run linux on them. I have tried to hack them but it just don't let it have that way. I guess maybe i am not following what needs to be done for the same. But i am interested in doing that soon.As for android based devices. It seems ubuntu is finding a way out of that and is going to be on desktop and mobile at the same time. I guess they found something related to android phones which allows them to use ubuntu over it. I see windows 7 phone having the same hack and showed on some tech news last year. I guess android makers are pretty relaxed about hardware hacking.I agree with you on apple bit. First of all person who invested much into apple hardware is not going to hack to install something on it. If he has enough money he is not going to do it without some mod or emulator. iOS is also unix or bsd based if i am not wrong. SO it should be possible to hack it but not sure if there are some people who are doing it online.
  9. Is it just me or there are not even manual mycent updates these days? By no chance there is mycent system running, so I knew there was manual updates running by mods. But even that is stalled last two weeks? or more?
  10. I get that dissipation of heat in general. My question was related to Nividia. I heard that laptops with nvidia card shows more heat compared to any laptop without it. There are hardly any laptops sold these days without the nvidia driver but still, It's hard to see that there seems to be the observation.I have seen toshiba which is not using nvidia card and have less heat issue.I will see what others have observation on this.
  11. By the way yordan, How true is this concept of system heating due to graphic cards? I heard that machines with Nvidia graphic cards dissipate more heat compared to intel graphics cards. Is that true? or is it just assumption from people who look nvidia card on intel board as mismatch?I don't know if there are any good AMD processor based laptops with no battery problem. So far never tried them and no idea of it at all.As for Dell, head that there are some people using XPS and having heat issues. I don't know if the problem exists for vostro and inspiron. But it seems there is issue with XPS which has high configuration and in turn high dissipation rates. I hope to know more about this.
  12. Operating touch screen phone and then creating office docs and other office based stuff is one of the hardest thing you can do. I have seen that using touch screen makes it hard to type and switch between things. Anyway, that's android for you. I thought Sony has pre-installed version of the office apps. Atleast it's previous phones had quickoffice in android based phones. So here are some of the office apps. Quickoffice Free Thinkfree office Google docs I know google docs app is kinda hard to use across any platform be it blackberry or android. Anyway, try them if you want. I can't post links because I am using mobile and it is hard to format(I tried but....) and post.
  13. Th reason using cooler pads and the dust wiping is not going to help is because the system is getting hot because of the battery. So only way to stop being heated is to stop it from getting any supply. That's all we can do. I made tentative calculation related to the battery shutoff time which may not apply to you. It worked for me due to the predictable load shedding.Another good point is that considering the lifespan of 1 year, laptops are more expensive compared to desktop. I mean 1 year battery can fail after or just two days before warranty. Buying new battery is also not something one can do randomly.I mean one has to be financially prepared for it. I had lot of issues with this HP laptops and batteries and so i am skipping this brand totally. I don't know what else can we do about battery life and power failure. I am going to ask this in local forums and groups to get idea of how things work here.
  14. Laptops are causing me a lot of trouble lately. Many things are causing issues for example, battery, screen and the hardware upgrade. I can't do that just like I do with the desktop. The reason I like desktop over laptop is that I can donate the parts that I don't need and carry on with remaining. In case of desktop you can keep screen and give the rest to someone. In case of laptop, if the battery is issue, you can hardly use the laptop. If the screen has issues, you can hardly see anything even though system runs perfect. Upgrading and constant heat issue is neglected in case of laptop.Tablets are even worst. I don't know how come people like to watch the movies and the text in small screen. I would rather see things on big screen of my desktop or laptop, instead of tablets.
  15. I too have electricity issue here. I have managed to figure out the pattern at which they turn off the grid. So I always keep the power on before they turn it off. That way I can have some backup during the power out time. There is no fixed solution for this it seems. I am going to ask the same question in toms hardware or any other hardware forum. Most of the answers are too generic because people who give answers are more likely to be in area where there is hardly 1 or 2 power outage in month. One more thing is that some batteries from manufacturers like HP and Acer do have issues. No matter how you try to manage the laptops, they're going to have issues with the battery. So my suggestion is that - turn off the power after every 2 hours for say 20 minutes and plug it on. That way battery will keep on functioning. This is the way I am doing things. I don't know if it will work for you because I have no idea about the brand of battery and the quality and warranty period of it. Most of the time, 2 year is the maximum any laptop battery can function normally, then it starts to show some issues. This is my observation for HP laptop battery, may not apply to dell or any other brand.
  16. I don't know if it applicable to the windows users. But if you're using chrome or firefox on linux then you need to check the news. The adobe team that works on flash is now going to close the support for the flash in linux. In that case they may offer support only for the chrome by some odd means. I don't know if it secret deal from google to attract linux users to use flash on their distros. You can read more about it here. So I take that flash will continue to have some issues on browsers any other than chrome. I think this was done purposefully as flash developers are going to enforce premium content platform soon and that could be the reason they're removing open platform relation, be it linux or any other platform.
  17. Yes. Firebug and Web developer add-on works too. I just found out this method without downloading add-on, which is handy. Considering those who spend a lot of time offline at school or college. I think it is handy for those guys. I know that becuase I had no connection to access during my lab sessions and today most of the labs do allow looking up to internet for the answers. There are many add-ons and features in case of chrome and opera but I am using firefox and most obvious one was this. I am going to checkout firebug and web developer console too. It's just that scratchpad is letting me do the hardwork much quickly compared to firebugs console. Also I can type whole program into scratchpad and execute it, which is cool.
  18. I am currently taking some of the jquery and javascript lessons from net tut+ and codeyear. If you're codeyear or codecademy member and taking javascript lesson to learn web programming. I think having a javascript test console is necessary. I know that some users prefer php designer, notepad++ and other IDE but scratchpad is dedicated and handy tool. I was in search of the offline tool to test the javascript inside the browser. I know there are web dev extensions for opera, chrome and firefox too. But in case of scratchpad you don't have to download any of these extensions. It works just fine and it also saves time for the switching between the tabs and checking on browser. Just to let you know i am using firefox 10 and it is working for me. If you're using any old version of the firefox then I am afraid it may not work for you as expected. Also I have not tested any external JS by linking on this scratch pad so no idea how that works. Just have to experiment more to get those results. I am going to test adding javascript file externally and using it in this scratchpad. Anyway here is the path where you can find scratchpad. Tools > Web developer > Scratchpad. You can also use SHIFT +F4 to access this scratchpad. Hope this helps to those who are seeking an offline javascript console tester.
  19. No. I guess it was because of their Free CD and spread it forward culture. I have seen that there are groups which are spreading the linux CDs, from ubuntu, canonical. So mostly this is because of the sharing culture. That is not all. Check the forums for ubuntu, they allow you to vent and be respectful at the same time. I have seen some nice debate threads without attacks. Ubuntu users also reply with care and with the same attitude towards their own questions, so that makes it more friendly.Problems exist for almost every platform and being a debian branch, these problems are stacked per distro level. But I know it is because of sharing culture and friendly community.
  20. I spoke too soon about elementary. I just realized that they are trying to be iOS for linux. I have noticed that they're doing some major design changes on their desktop. I would love to see some good options from distros but minimizing the options only to make it more complicated is something I cant stand. This is where elementary is annoying. Like ubuntu HUD they're also making some annoying changes to their system. Some of the changes are so painful it is better to quit them than tolerate their design, methinks. Here are some of the changes where they are coming up in nexxt month. No Minimize Button in Elementary Luna One App at a time. No icons on desktop. No shortcuts on desktop, only dock shortcut is allowed. No wallpaper transparency allowed, only bluring. Saving state of app, like gnome, so quick launch is useless. No taskbar for the minimized applications. No menubars - "applications", spaces and "system in Luna version. So now you can see that they are heading for the direction of ubuntu with HUD and some of their own added madness. I don't like this type of stuff because I am on old hardware and assuming multi-tasking is bad for new dual core or multi core setups is wrong. I don't know what is wrong with the linux developers. That's not all. It seems only - cinnamon (or MATE) desktop along with XFCE is the only option for the people who like traditional desktop. So no more gnome and KDE with limited buttons for me. I am sticking with xubuntu, xfce and MATE from now on. I had some expectations from elementary but consiering the design obsession in that community, I am staying away from them from now on.
  21. Yes. It was for me yesterday. I don't know what changes were made to the system. I guess it is related to the design and some broken pages modification I guess. If you see there is change in the button "asta host open discussion" which is on the navigation bar. I think that now redirects to the forum page.Earlier that was changing to the first page which is very old. Now the page is moving the system to the forum page. So it seems there are some edits to the forum. This is the reason I guess forum was down. But it was weird, no page was opening for Xisto and the same case was there for the Xisto. Both forums were showing the apache server welcome page. After say 2-3 hours it was fixed and now forums are running fine as of now.I don't know for sure that they are speeding up but I can tell you that they're doing good. Mycents are also low and for my 5 posts I got 1 $ which is horribly low for sure. I guess things are still the same with low earning on these forums. You write a lot and get very low cents. Anyway, atleast you guys are here to read and post and forum is back too.
  22. I am using the portable edition of the opera on my windows desktop. So my experience is kinda different compared to you. It could be platform specific bug and that is why it is hard to comment on it. I guess you're using linux (mint) and running opera? or using windows 7 ? Depending on that things may change because of the way memory management issue is tackled. In my case when turbo opera is ON, then most of the youtube videos lag and also take some time to load the page. I have never noticed that with turbo OFF. So make sure you check this and see if the results are like me or different. I don't know if you're using turbo but most of the time non-video and non flash based sites open a lot quickly in opera. That aside, are you using any plugins or say addons on opera? If yes, then do use it without them and see if it speeds up the things. Most likely it will also change the things. If all this fails, ask in the opera community. Do give them your system specs - especially RAM, OS and processor speed. Sorry can't help anymore than this.
  23. These videos are hosted on their server for free. You can check the button at the bottom of the post that says download video or something like that. So I don't think they;re restricting us. In fact they want more customers for theri paid subscription and this is their way of getting more. So that is the reason they're offering us to download the videos. That's how I see it. You can check if i am wrong at assessing that site. Atleast I have found the download videos button so I guess they are offering us free videos. The thing is that some of the linux distributions don't allow us to download some of the video formats due to license issues. Unless we use VLC there is no way to play those files. You may be right about their video tutorial distribution related to codeigniter. Which are not for download and they offer us to view them from blip.tv. So that is the reason they're doing that to save bandwidth. But those are cool videos. I would love to download codeigniter ones. Do you know how to download from blip.tv? I hope it's not illegal, considering videos are already free from tut+, it shouldn't be illegal to download them for offline viewing. I am currently searching for a way to download them, it's worth downloading those videos.
  24. Thanks yordan. Only had rhythumbox and another player installed on this machine. Now downloaded the VLC from the software center in order to play the other files. I get that sometimes the file formats that are from the proprietory files are usually hard to play. I see that they are now allowing the option to download into mov format.Earlier that was not the case and had to saerch for the blip tv's format in order to download. In case of windows there is URLSnooper which I am using to download from such stream sites. I think this is a good idea for windows.By the way just noticed that the amount of file size is huge for even 10 minutes video. I know that their files have some quality but seriously they should use mkv or similar format to make it small download. I have to use some internal converter software to do that job for now. That aside, enjoying the video tutorials. These are some too basic but are good videos because pace of the tutorial is really slow and surely helps many of those who wants to learn javascript.
  25. I am not much into jquery and most of the time use what I have and what can be done in short. But it seems more and more people are getting into javascript and jquery and related scripts. There are others like mootools or scripaculous etc. But considering the amount of usage jquery UI and skins are available on the internet it is fair to judge that more people are likely to lean towards jquery in future. No doubt sites like codecademy and nettuts are coming up with some tutorials that teaches you how to write good code in jquery. You can check jquery in 30 days here. Check for the opt in box so that you get notification for the new video. I have so far followed only 7 days and there are even more days to catch up. This is basically a video tutorial and I don't know how to download it on the hard disk. It seems they are hosting the videos on bleep.tv so no idea about capturing streams of that sites. But I am goign to find the solutions for that problem. I asked for the script that captures blips videos and i guess i may get some direction on that front. Check the first video if you want to get sneak peak. Some of the tutorials are not that great but good for beginners. You can create effects for disabling right click and other functions which you need. Some users are also using jquery for the opt-in box and the top toolbar. In any case i suggest you to do experiment on your own with their tutorials. I have a lot of videos to catch up so will update this thread soon.
