Should I Stick With Vista Or Get Windows 7?
mahesh2k replied to FruitRocks's topic in Operating Systems
@repgsearcherz, thanks for the information. I'll have to check out Windows 7 RC for that now. It's good to hear that it will work with low ram like 1GB. I mean with vista even 1GB is not enough. It takes lot of RAM, even if we disable aero theme and revert to classic. I don't know where it takes up so much resource. That is why i unable to upgrade last time. I read winsupersite blog, so most of my views are formed cause of that blog. Also i'm yet to try their XP mode virtualization. I heard that it is limited to some versions and not for all version, is that true or is it rumor ? also i heard ultimate and professional edition of windows 7 have very few differences. is it ?. -
I don't know if you're aware of this. But there are some people who benefit from selling resumes. and by creating fake companies, giving employment ads etc. I'm constantly seeing one ad of a company on monster. That company is posting ad on almost every technology out there. and their most of the calls are for freshers. and they even released their webpage earlier. i don't know what happened to their site now. But their site was horribly designed. something like you can say geocities style that beginner sites. That site only had contact info and company profile and some blah blah company material. Now the thing is how site like monster allows such spammers. Some questions coming to my mind are, how they're earning by posting employment ads ? I can understand that they can sell fresher job seekers resume to consultancy companies. This could be way to earn money. Gray area here we can say cause there are plenty of consultancy do that in one way or the other. But some scammers are ruining this. They're on Dice, Monster, Facebook, Orkut. and almost every possible job seeker sites you can imagine. If site is famous then they are there. Don't know how to deal with them. But i do know how to track them and to recognize such scammers out of crowd. They have pattern of posting and way to approach any newbie. So be cautious on job seekers sites.

Should I Stick With Vista Or Get Windows 7?
mahesh2k replied to FruitRocks's topic in Operating Systems
I just want to confirm this. You find windows 7 faster on old machines ?. i mean pentium 4 one's. with RAM 256-1GB ?. I find it vista having hard time on those machines. But XP performs nicely on those machine. My one machine is running on 512 RAM, Pentium 4 2.0 ghz processor. So i wanted to confirm if i upgrade to RAM say 1 GB, is windows 7 will give good performance on that old pc ? What are your observations about old pc configurations for windows 7 ? -
Such huge disk space and bandwidth ? that is overselling. aah, anyway you'll learn about that soon. Such overselling hosts won't last long. If they do last, i would like to check them out for downtime and features. Even if T17 is saying something like that then i'll say that is overselling. Which i know T17 folks will rarely do for ads. T17/Computinghosts service is realistic than other free hosts. It is more than enough. I've one blog which is hosted on 50 mb disk space and 1gb bandwidth. and i'm yet to run out of disk space after 1 year of blogging. So it depends on the content hosted on blog like media files etc (images). So the space and bandwidth you mentioned is more than enough. You've enough to play around till you upgrade to higher plan.

Yeah, now i guess you feel much better after taking break of day or two. isn't it ? I do that frequently, you know. Lol, on more questions coming. I like this. . Can't wait for more questions. There are very few threads coming up these days, so your threads are always interesting to answer or to participate. and see you learned one good thing that you're prioritizing your questions. Which is good thing. Cause you'll likely to learn in modular approach if you do that. This is one good thing to hear from your side. Ok and i didn't get one comment of yours. What do you mean by "base of your blog" ? You mean traffic ? or you mean readers or commenter ? or you mean link so that google can acknowledge backlink ? This time i'm asking you questions.

lol, it is complicated. You can't transfer/backup a CMS that easily between hosts. I gave you link to articles. After reading those you think it is easy to transfer CMS ?. And yes, for you CMS is weblog. Even those who are used to this will tell you how careful one needs to go before switching host. Or even backing up data. and as rpgsercherz already explained about DNS. I'll save some keystrokes here. T17 is not free domain providers. You're paying for your domain in one way or the other. That is by usage of Mycents which are considered as US$. For other providers, you get control which is limited. I don't know how many free domain providers are out their which gives you domain security and feature of owing domain name and rights associated with it. If you know any specific user then let us know. Oh and whether it is hard or easy it depends on hosts. that is your earlier and previous. Even if you've enough idea about switching host. You'll follow steps carefully so that is not walk in park especially with SQL based applications (CMS/Forums).

Would You Use Ie Explorer Even If It Wasn't Bundled With Windows?
mahesh2k replied to The Simpleton's topic in The Internet
Firefox doesn't use java. You've to install java add-ons only if you wish to view browser contents. So that makes it browser runtime. Firefox is not written in java and it is not using java for it's underlying operation. If you check the Help > About Mozzila Firefox you'll find following details. Atleast i got this from my Mozilla. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12 From this information i can say that it is not built on java. But it is built on .NET. As .NET is also like java i.e it uses VM. So expect similar performance from it. If you compare FF with chrome then you'll find boost in performance. Why ? Cause Chrome on windows is written on ATL. For more information about ATL/WTL you can check chromium developement site. I used to think that opera is written in java, but i was wrong on that. None of leading browsers are written using java. C++ is used for developing browsers. Variations in C++ could be there but atleast there is C++ behind it. -
Freebie trading hardly works. and i've seen few sites started with lots of giveaway stuff at the start and then suddenly vanished. Lot of sites actually turn out to be scams. Freebie trading sites likely to earn from their advertising than actual freebie sponsor. Rayzoredge gave good info here. The question-answer format is really a good one to get answers from fro newbies. I would like to know that some sites do run free trial schemes which could also be falling into this category. And most of those sites could ask for credit card or paypal address which gets charged atleast 1-5$ for account processing and other stuff. So that could be the way they're managing their freebie offer. is this also falls into freebie trading ? I'm not sure but it could be trial-trading.

How Many Time Do You Check Your Adsense Earnings
mahesh2k replied to ciidoctor's topic in Search Engines
I use Buysellads ad-network. They're very strict about their criteria. You need your own domain, max page views, visitors etc. Payout is dependent on campaign, which is again not regular(monthly/twice-a-month sometimes). Some campaigns pay 2$CPM while some pay 0.50-1$ CPM. I kinda get 1$ CPM advertiser sometime. Most of my advertising banner shows campaign of Adobe, IBM and some other technology sponsors. I'm yet to qualify for tribal fusion and castle media, i got my applications refused cause i've just 8K visitors mark. And they need atleast 10k. Also try Adsdq, just signed up with them. There are few advertisers with them. Let's see if they could fill in some cents. There is also Directmedia but not sure about their restrictions and payout. -
How Many Time Do You Check Your Adsense Earnings
mahesh2k replied to ciidoctor's topic in Search Engines
My adsene earning is not that high. Though i've 200-250 visitros a day on one site. But that site earns more with CPM advertiser than adsense. So i just check adsense after 1 month or so. There is not point in checking adsense every now and then if you're not earning anything out of it. I mean sometimes i earn bit good income and sometimes it goes way too down. Also i've noticed that most of the users have adblock plus installed on their firefox, so adsense and all other adservers are blocked by that plugin. As that plugin blocks most of the reputed ad server. there is no way you can earn CPM hit as well. If anyone tried openx ads, you'll notice that they're not yet banned by plugin. But for openx ads you need dedicated advertiser/sponsor. You'll hardly get openx sponsor from their official site. I don't know but if this continues then it will be hard to earn money on the internet. I just wish those adnetworks should stop irritating and slow loading ads on pages. That way half of people will remove adblock plus. The reason for installing ad-block plus is slow loading time and irritating flash ads. I tried this add-on to check adsense status. There are plenty of others. Some plugins for wordpress also shows your earning in your dashboard. But i guess it's not worth it, adsense is dieing. -
Moving websites could be a pain, if you've huge blog or website. Simply copying files via FTP doesn't work. Database related applications need to maintain their table and entries. In such cases moving wordpress, drupal, joomla is pain. Also after moving your website, you've to take care of DNS which takes some time to adjust for your new host. If you're to move your wordpress installation, then take a look at these tutorial at devlounge and optiniche. Also if you're joomla user then this article will surely help you. Also before moving to another host. Keep your backup of site and don't delete it until your site runs smoothly on new server for a week. after that take a backup on new server as well. Most of the hosts do offer backups, you just need to check it. Also if you're with hosts like dreamhost, softlayer, rackspace then their support will guide you for most of the transfer issues. Again everyone will have different experience while moving to another host. Some will have positive from their ex-host and new host side. While some will have bad experience with ex-host even during move. I suggest knowing a bit of SQL, before moving CMS/dynamic sites to new host. This will help a lot while moving to new host.

Yeah. It looks like your activity on Xisto is bit slowed down. I can't wait to see your more questions coming. . I just wish one question at time, please. . This will help us to answer you better. In between, why not read good news blog. There are plenty of good tech blogs out there. And don't just stick to the one type of news blog. Try and read multiple niches. You can start with blog like techcrunch. This blog is more focused on technology and social media. Also ars-technica is one good news blog that covers lot of topic like open source, apple, science, programming, social media etc. Don't just stick one-two types of blog.Discover more news sites from Digg, Yahoo Buzz. More you learn about their writing style the better. From that you can break news on your blog. Also take a look at site like slashdot. You can find very interesting news stuff on that site. Contributors/commentators on that site are good as of now. BTW, good to hear that your adsense account is accepted. Good luck with blog.

Would You Use Ie Explorer Even If It Wasn't Bundled With Windows?
mahesh2k replied to The Simpleton's topic in The Internet
I stopped using IE few years ago. Don't know when exactly. These days i open IE only to check the CSS/Site design. Also when i go to cyber cafe while traveling i gotta use IE. Why ? Many Cyber cafe owners think that they know it all but don't install alternate browsers. They have no idea about Browser hijacker scripts for IE. And still we've to manage with such cafes who use IE 5/6. Some spywares are such horrible for IE5/6 that they restart Internet explorer and after penetration into browser they get into disk as well. Restarting explorer.exe most of the time. IE 8 did have option of sandbox browsing for security but is that working at all ? We're discovering security flaws every now and then from IE bandwagon. So no point in sticking with IE.On my personal computer, i switched my default browser to firefox. Opera is also good option for default browser. But i can't live without some of the add-ons on firefox. So i have no option other than firefox as of now. But i'm comfortable with chrome, opera. I'll not use IE even if it is bundled with newer version of windows. So i'll go with installing better browser than that. -
Such sites takes advantage of your content and earn revenue. and pass hardly 1-3% of their earning to you. Some even go further and ask you to give your adsense code to be embded on your article page. So that cause of pageviews and clicks you'll earn revenue. Both of these methods don't work and in one method you're likely to get removed from adsense if their site buys bot traffic. Take example of triond. That site also pays for clicks on your article and they share revenue with you. I tried it with posts more than 15 on their site. Earning so far 0.0.3$. Way to go rich. Now take a look at papatoto. Most of the news articles are simply trash. They don't make much impact on visitors. Also content on that site is also not much quality. By attracting writers to write good content for their site, they're earning from CPM and CPC sales more than writers do. Newbie writers do fall for this trick and post lot of content and hardly earn. In this process such sites grow and later get paid editors to earn revenue. While guest posting is good for writers resume. But such sites won't make much on their freelancing or writers resume. It's better to start blog be it blogspot, wordpress.com. Get yourself in good shape and then start earning with advertisers on blog. That is much better way than contributing to such sites. At the end, this is just my opinion. You can try it if you wish to.

@Nameless_, i don't think you've learned from this. So far i've followed your actions in this news blog project. Some of my observations are in one sentence : You didn't put much into it. First you started well with blogger. But then you moved your focus to wordpress installation and themes. In between, newstack on blogger was still there but you didn't put much in there. Do you ? Honestly. It would have been much better blog, even on blogspot domain. There are plenty of good blogs in news domain with and working fine even on blogspot domain. Some ad networks like kontera, infolinks are keeping those blogs alive for years as far as i know. Correct me if i'm wrong. I've seen you distracted from your goal of building better blog. You distracted from your blog's content and moved to wordpress blog design thing. Which was not necessary until your blog gets hit and demands itself redesign. But you got engaged to it anyway. Damn, i'm giving too much of advice to teens these days . Sorry for that. I never had someone to guide me during my journey on blogging and forum development. So i thought giving few pointers to you. I know teens don't like advice especially from person who is 5-6 years elder to them . I know i didn't like it in my time. :(Let me give you few last pointers. You don't need to start big to expand yourself big. Start small, keep up with your news site. If psychic niche is not working for you. Then break into other news items and work on it. Don't measure success of your blog in 1-2 months. Your perception about news blog is wrong. There are plenty of news blog in various domains are up and running, it just depends on the content writer. It takes 1 year or more for some blogs and forums to get up and running. So relax, keep working on content. and all the best with site.

What you're looking on Xisto is this. And NO, Xisto is not earning any revenue by showing any answers.com widgets on forum. This is free service from answers.com for webmaster. This service is provided in order to enhance site experience of most of the communities. Larger communities do require widgets like dictionary, thesaurus and encyclopedia. If you notice you'll even find bookmark widget at the top right hand side of the Xisto forum. And to tell you that even that is free. Xisto is not at all generating any revenue from those widgets. If you want to confirm this you can go to this page for answers.com widgets and services. No where in their service agreement they're mentioning that they're paying webmasters in anyway. I'm not sure if Xisto did exclusive contracts or so. But as there is no ads on those answer.com results. I don't think this is any agreement then, just plain service from answer.com. What do you mean by artificial ? Adding widgets to website/forum makes it artificial ? I didn't get you here. By the way, i don't think it hinders potential of site in anyway. I think you're stretching issue of inclusion of simple widget of answer.com. Lol,yeah.

Can Someone Suggest Me A Good Wordpress Theme?
mahesh2k replied to The Simpleton's topic in General Discussion
Not exactly. Some of those premium themes are used by bloggers who earn six figure income. If you want to know some of these six figure income earner bloggers then take a look at some blogs like. Problogger, Davidrisley, Copyblogger, John chow are just some of the six figure income earner bloggers. You'll come to know that why their blog earns more. The key is design which comes after important aspect of content. So it is wrong to think that they're wasting money. The guy who designed Thesis theme charges 300$ to 1000$ for custom themes. and this is justifiable cause those designers work with various types of clients and requirements sometimes stuck with moody clients. Who change their design thoughts after every revision from designers. So in my opinion it is perfectly alright to charge huge for corporate blogs and premium blogs(blogs whose earning is in 6 figures). Smashing magazine, Mashable publishes regularly the list of top free or paid themes. Some themese are of magazine style while some are of diverse style. Most of the themes published in such lists are usually taken up by huge crowd and design becomes regular as more and more blogs common. So it is always better to modify those designs instead of using as it is. -
Making A Simple Platformer In Game Maker. A tutorial.
mahesh2k replied to Spudd's topic in Computer Gaming
Yes. you can sell games. But i doubt the games made from game maker could price for more than 50$. In such case, you need better 2D engine and tool. Something like Garagegames 2D engine. It costs 100$ for independent license and more than 100$ for enterprise/commercial licensee. Though you can sell money with garage-games indie license but it costs more if the distribution and other royalty stuff comes in. Back to point of gamemaker, you can even sell games which you create from free version. But nag of "made with gamemaker" will turn off your game buyers and will low down your product image as well. So it is better to purchase gamemaker. It costs only 20$. You can send check/wire transfer/paypal to pay for upgrade. Are you sure she uses gamemaker ? I doubt that gamemaker games sells for such high cost. Of course if graphics/sounds and story plot is good then sure it will get sold for more than 100$. I think she is earning money by promoting brand names/logo as you said in your previous post of yours. -
Obviously they have to add manually. Or it could be some script that transfers member to hosted group when their request is accepted by admin/mods. I've no idea but i thought as application process is manual chances are this could be manual group addition as well. And BTW, i don't think that we've option for change of vote What's the point in that ? I mean there are Xisto - Web Hosting users. Some of them are qupis members. and most of them are hosted. They may or may not be active but atleast they are customers. I don't see any point in separating people like that. Instead as i said earlier, it would be good to have Xisto hosted only people with hosted status with some scripts instead of manual addition(if there is any).
-
Hosted group was good earlier cause there were no mycents. Now that we've mycents introduced by admins. I don't see any need for hosted group. Let it be for only those who are hosted on Xisto. Some of us are paid members of xisto. So i don't think it is worth to add them as well into hosted group cause paid members are here only to resolve their problems or to earn mycents for renewal or to get add-on from xisto. There is no point in adding them into hosted group. Instead adding them into "customer" group would be a nice move. and it will be easy to see people from Xisto - Web Hosting customers, Xisto hosted members. Though it will sound like divide between members, only good to see members in some colors and nothing beneficial in any way. If there is any benefit, i would like to know what that it. But it will be great to see only trap hosted people with status "hosted". I'm not sure if this is implemented but i think these days only Xisto hosted are getting this status. Correct me if i'm wrong with my observations.
-
Well i tried it from multiple browsers. Tried refreshing it many times. Did all the experiments by viewing it on multiple speeds of broadband. and the result is same. Lockerz is not accessible to me. is lockerz still down ? or it is down for certain geographical area ? i mean most of sites do such things in order to beta test and to speed things up during developement and to avoid server hog. I've no idea about others. So for how many members it is working ?
-
You found that path ?and copied your files ? if so, go to your wordpress and login. after that your installed theme will be showing in the list of installed themes under themes section. In order to see that go to left hand sidebar link "themes">from list of themes, you'll see the one you've just copied in that path. Yes you can start blogging now. but if you blog on your home's server. it will not be visible to us. your home server is meant for your theme and wordpress testing only. so continue your blogging on blogger as you're already doing it. once you get enough of credits to get Xisto, you can upload your theme and migrate your blog from blogger to wordpress. this is also possible you can google for tutorial. Yes you can. it is always good to start blogging and improving themes as you move ahead. You can modify themes on your home computer with MAMP on and then later upload to the themes directory of wordpress. and after that go to themes section of wordpress and select the newly modified theme. this is how themes are updated in wordpress.
-
I guess you're going ahead too much unnecessarily. . Anyway, for now i suggest please stick with one blog and wordpress installation. This is to avoid confusion between wordpress installation and to save your time from breaking things off. Also for your records "wordpress-mu" is wordpress multiuser software. and No, you can't play with it's directory names. It will break lot of things as of now for you. So avoid renaming default installed directories. You're breaking a lot of things that way. Not MAMP everytime exactly. You've MAMP installed now. try and use XAMPP or other web server in that case. Make sure only one of them is running at a time. i know it will have lot of space and stuff. But you want to play with multiple wordpress blogs. so you've to take that pain. Seriously, i don't suggest these. Start seriously working on one blog at timefirst, design theme and work with wordpress on your own computer before uploading to server. Multiple wordpress installation and stuff/is just confusing you right now. and it is not needed as well. you're working on too many things and focusing on nothing. This way, you're diverting from many things. No problem. People are on Xisto even if they've money, they're just here cause of community so no big deal in it. You can download free themes and install it in directory "wordpress/wp-content/themes/~name of your theme~. Now don't confuse with that last title" name of your theme " it means the one that you downloaded. You've to install and edit the theme in the path i've mentioned here.
-
Wrong approach. Concentrate on running one blog at time first. you can run two blogs at time on MAMP. Just download wordpress multiuser software and use it. Everything is same. in one directory you've wordpress and in another wordpress-mu. Correct way to go here is not to edit the default wordpress directory name. If you want to run two blogs. install another installer like MAMP and have wordpress in it. and start the services only when needed. cause if you try to mess with single directory of wordpress and edited it then things will start to break. and you'll find yourself correcting it rather than creating something from it. not a good approach if you are after blogging and designing. Good wordpress themes are scattered on internet. Though you can find good themes on official wordpress theme gallery. Or try sites like Blogohblog. Also I find K2 theme easy to modify and learn. Other than that if you've professional inclination from blog/site then consider purchasing theme like "headway, thesis" etc. For starters you can download free theme from Performancing themes site. I don't suggest creating your own theme as of now. Cause you've lot to learn from php/css perspective and you've to find your way to basic mac troubleshooting as well. Because of this we have two way to do things. first download a theme and modify it look different. another is buy theme and make it look different. Try downloading simple looking theme and modify css to change background color, title and post color etc. Once you're comfortable with it. Go ahead and do some more modifications. Also sometimes free themes have ads on footers or their own plug at the footer. So what you can do in this case is modify their footer and remove their ads. start modifying themes this way.
