  1. It's been a while since I've used switch in PHP, but I imagine it uses standard C notation, which goes as follows: switch{ case: Whatever; break; case: Whatever; break; default: Whatever;}In some languages, the default is optional, but in others it is not. The break statements are required to keep one case from flowing into the next. Hope that helps. If it doesn't, perhaps you could be more specific, by telling us how it is not working (error message? wrong answer? etc.) which is general good practice anyway. Don't make us guess. Also, try doing a web search, many simple tutorials on the web will show you how to do this. Try to keep this forum for questions that are not as easy to find answers to. ~Viz
  2. M^E! Haven't heard from you in forever. Just looked over this, and am looking forward to your next update, even though I don't use access or VB.NET. Should be simple enough to convert the methods here to any other .NET language though, such as C# (my favorite).~Viz
  3. NDISWrapper is a useful utility. I've used it myself many times to get Linksys and Cisco wireless cards to work under linux. If there is no good driver released by the company that makes your wireless card for linux, you may want to try the Windows driver with NDISWrapper even if you can find a Linux driver. the Linux driver might be better, but don't assume it is just because it was made for Linux.~Viz
  4. I'm interested in an N router, but as all I have are B/G/A devices, I can wait until N is actually a specification. Spending most of my life on a college campus which is completely wireless and where most of the rooms have gigabit ethernet, and having a 24 port switch means I really don't rely over-much on my wireless speed to often.~Viz
  5. *should have known better* pyost is right. The content of your signature does not affect post count, and what I didn't know was whether editing your post and changing your signature for that post would affect post count. But the smart people who made the board we use don't let you edit your signature like that, so, no, signature does not affect post count. And pyost is also right that anything inside an offsetting BBCode does not count either.~Viz
  6. I'm actually not sure about that, but since OpaQue is a smart guy, I have a feeling that signatures don't count one way or the other towards credit count. But if you can manually edit your signature in individual posts with the edit button, that might affect credits. ~Viz
  7. I find that that's usually the reason people complain about losing credits. We should probably put up a warning somewhere about the loss of credits if you edit a post by deleting content. Should probably also find out if users removing content via edit has the same extra penalty to credits that a mod editing one has. How high did you get your credits? You need to have over 3 (or maybe 4) credits to get hosting unsuspended, and it occurs the next time the cron job runs. I forget if that is every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. And once you've gotten a negative amount of credits, your credits still drop one per day. ~Viz
  8. That is the weird behavior I was talking about. I tried bringing it up to the other staff members, but so far nothings been done about it. I know though, that if you make a 1 credit post when you are at -4.00 (if you drop to -4.0 when you should be at zero) it increases you to 1 credit, so it seems to just be treating -4.00 as zero, which means you can really only go down to -26 credits before your account is deleted. I'll mention this to Opaque the next time I talk to him, now that I know it's not just me. ~Viz
  9. I don't use Synaptic either, but that's because I usually run Fedora, although I've finally gotten completely fed up with pirut. Never heard of YaST2, and never had much experience with APT4RPM, maybe I'll give them a try.~Viz
  10. Ooh! Ooh! How about Synaptic? You know, the package manager that comes with Ubuntu. And Eclipse, especially the versions that Fedora ships, although they are now out of date since Eclipse 3.3.0 just came out. Oh, and ssh. Ssh is extremely useful, especially when doing research on linux machines. And top, to check process usage. Although I guess top is more of a utility than an app, maybe the same can be said for ssh. Oh and So stop listing them, unless you are going to add more details either about them or why they are useful, please. It's essentially spamming, and I frown on it (not that I will edit posts for it, but still, think guys). ~Viz
  11. I find the number of interesting things that are being discovered possible with the iPhone amazing. And the speed with which the discoveries occur is a testament to its popularity. I don't think I've heard of many devices with this number of hacks (not cracks, but hacks) available for it in such a short time.~Viz
  12. Unless an admin can confirm otherwise, assume the credit script is working unless a lot of people are complaining about issues. The fact that it has been working correctly in its current for for several months or years now should reassure you that it works really well. Since you are posting in the Hosted Members Support forum, you must have a hosting account, so as was mentioned, you lose 1 credit every 24 hours, which is about 0.01 credits per 15 minutes. If you notice a more significant drop, also as was mentioned, check to see if one of your messages was deleted or edited. If that doesn't explain the situation, then you likely have a problem. But in general, those cases cover 90+% of all situations. Although, personally, I have noticed some weird issues when credits dip below 0, so try not to let that happen.~Viz
  13. Well, no, but that's because Windows doesn't have chmod. You can however use the properties page to set the access restrictions in Windows Explorer. ~Viz
  14. Do simple search for it. There are several bajillion ways (by which I mean three or so, some of which do different things in different browsers). I could post specifics, but it is very well documented on websites and a simple search for "javascript mouse position" (minus the quotes) will get you many good results.~Viz
  15. More power per watt is a huge deal. The other thing that's a big deal is more efficiently performing operations at the current processing speeds. for example, I have access to a server with four 3.x GHz processors, but it compiles slower than a Core 2 Duo (The server is 64bit) because the Duo is better designed to handle integer functions which are highly used in compilation. So event hought the Duo runs at 1.8 GHz, it gets more accomplished than 4 faster processors.~Viz
  16. First of all, although both IE7 and Windows Explorer are linked through some of the same background utilities, they are different programs. Windows Explorer makes a decent FTP client, especially when you open the folder view sidebar. However, I found it has too poor maintained connections for my taste. It does have its advantages though, in that for some types of files you can just edit them remotely through Windows Explorer. Personally, I use FileZilla for the single uploads, or really large uploads where I want a stable connection. Mostly though, I use Dreamweaver (and older clunkier version, uggh) for web developement because I like colorized text, so I just use its ftp capabilities to keep my local and remote copies in synch. It usually does a good job, although sometimes, for unknown reasons, the initial setup can be a pain. And sometimes for unknown reasons it just won't connect to the server. I default to fileZilla or Windows Explorer in those cases.~Viz
  17. Although hard drives are not the most power intensive items in a computer, a decent spike in power usage can be noticed when they spin up from rest (which usually only happens at boot-up). However, since other devices draw power, we can't answer your power questions without detailed information about your hardware specifications. There are several sites that will calculate power requirements for you if you provide them with detailed information about your system, just do a search for something similar to "computer power calculator." Some of them should give you a good estimate. If the estimate comes to around 300W or so, you'd probably be better off with the 500W supply, in case a sharp increase in activity in your computer bumps you up over the 350.~Viz
  18. As mentioned above, go to the source. One of the best thing about widely used open source projects such as MySQL and PHP is that they are extremely well documented. The online documentation for MySQL is very well done and even includes a pretty good tutorial. I'm not great at making quieries, but I'm along the lines of an intermediate user. Everything I've done I've learned either indirectly from the forums here or online from the documentation.~Viz
  19. I'm not going to comment on disassembly and resource editing because several other people have done that. However, if all you want to do is change the details of the exe on program load, then you will need a hex editor to change the header of the exe file. Headers of most varieties of exe files are well defined on the internet, just do a search. Some common things that this needs to be done for is increasing stack space for programs that use recursive functions if you want to run a large number of iterations.~Viz
  20. I'm involved in a research project this summer (no I can't say much about it, sorry) and it would be very helpful for us to be able to work with the Jikes RVM. For those of you who don't know what it is, the best source of information is the Jikes home page. Otherwise, suffice it to say that it is a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that can be customized and have parts rewritten by the user. This means that you can tell how adding things to or removing things from or changing things in the JVM would affect performance, memory usage, or anything. However, we are having issues installing the RVM. As near as I can tell, when fetching the GNU Classpath dependencies, it has issues with something (not sure what because the error is that it can't cd to a directory because the directory doesn't exist, but the directory does exist, and the permissions are appropriate). If anyone has any experience with the Jikes RVM, and especially with installing it for Intel OSX, and could provide any helpful suggestions, I would be appreciative. I can't post screenshots, and I'm not sure what level of error messages I'm allowed to give out, so this could be a difficult task to diagnose the issue, but I'd appreciate any help. ~Viz
  21. I think that is a very good deal. Personally, I have a registrar that I am very happy with (Yahoo! in case any of you were wondering, I don't want to hear any comments comparing them to this deal, or any other registrars, that would be a different thread). And I currently have my domain names set up so my Xisto account works with them. So I'd probably just sit on those 280 credits so I'd have time just in case. I've been suspended for a while now because I haven't been able to make it to the forums as often as I'd like to contribute. The one year free renewal option sounds good, but I would assume that that only applies if xisto is your registrar, am I correct? Otherwise, that would be a really sweet deal. For those of you who claim that 280 credits is a lot, I'll agree with you. But it's very reachable. At one point I had 280 credits. Granted I've seen a lot fewer threads that actually turned into good discussions in the topics I'm interested since then (and for some reason I'm not getting good notifications when people reply to topics I'm subscribed to), but if you make one decent length post a day, that's between 1 and two credits at least every day. At that rate, you could have 280 credits every third of the year, or three times a year. If you make good quality tutorials, that number of credits can grow very rapidly, so it's actually an extremely generous offer. I find it amazing that we can get good professional quality hosting with most of the options for free here. And it especially amazes me that they continue to add options.I hope the beta goes well at trap because it would be nice to see the program brought over here for everyone who would take advantage of it.~Viz
  22. Personally, I stopped noticing the ads a long time ago. It is nice that they are gone however. Especially since I frequently have multiple tabs open in a browser many of which are sometimes Xisto threads. My machine is currently running 768 MB RAM 512 MB of which is PC100 and the other 256 is PC133, so this makes it slow, and not having to store ads in memory is really nice. I am glad that Xisto - Web Hosting is doing well enough to support the free web hosting sites without ads, it makes me feel secure that my free web hosting will not suddenly disappear because of a lack of funding. You said to promote Xisto - Web Hosting, which I frequently do, but this leads me to a question. I've always truthfully stated at the bottom of my sites (when I remember to) that they are hosted by Xisto with a link. Would it be wrong of me to change this to a "Hosted by Xisto - Web Hosting" link? Or would it be better to say "Hosted by Xisto" with a link to Xisto - Web Hosting? Or are both in bad taste and I should keep my current links?~Viz
  23. Uggh, timezones are evil. In fact, trying to get the server to deal with remote timezones can be a royal pain, sometimes impossible. I guess we'd need to know what you want to do with the timezone to be able to give you the best (or a good) way of handling them. For example, if the only the needed is to display the time in the user's timezone, then using javascript is probably your best bet, as that can draw from the local computer and generate a time in the current timezone automatically.~Viz
  24. Despite what unimatrix said, it is not the performer usually who holds the copyright, but the record label or publishing company. So you would not contact Britney Spears, but the record label that puts out her music. ~Viz
  25. I'm not against Dell preloading their machines with Ubuntu, however, I wonder how this new market presence will actually affect things. Because unless new applications geared at the average home user start being written for Linux, I just don't see it winning out over Windows except for maybe businesses. And businesses are more likely to want a machine without any OS than one preloaded with Ubuntu. For example, the whole XPS line of computers is geared towards gamers, which is a market that Linux just doesn't cater to well.~Viz
