  1. I tried to do that as well. My computer is a little bit old, with a Pentium II 400Mhz CPU and 256 MB of PC133 RAM. But this configuration is just barely enough for a small network. Perhaps it was my fault to install a Windows 2000 on it when I should actually be using Linux for a neater operating system, but the with the operating system, the computer is not able to withstand 2000+ concurrent sessions that it hung up when network traffic is high. I think the CPU power is the bottleneck in this situation. As I often have 3000+ concurrent sessions for a p2p network, I have to get a newer computer as a gateway. I bought a Celeron D 2.66Mhz with 512MB DDR400 Ram for the purpose. And now the computer is able to withstand the huge number of connections. I also have the firewall and antivirus program working all the time for security reason and with all those software, the CPU utilization is reasonable. A computer as gateway is very useful when you have to have a high number of connections. You have to get a number of crosslink wires, however. And you may have to configuration the old computer router through a slightly different interface, say VNC or remote control instead of the standard web base admin page from stand alone routers.
  2. At least get yourself one with 512MB RAM. A modern computer cannot run without 512MB RAM. While many cheap models are offering built-in graphics, you also have to be aware that those built in graphics takes up a certain amount of RAM from your computer. As for the speed of the RAM, I dont think dual channel is needed for a lap top as the FSB of mobile CPU is just 533MHz. There are some ULV CPUs on the market. IF you need long standby time, you may choose those models. But if you are using it as a desktop replacement, meaning that the computer is AC plugged most of time, a better CPU will be more suitable. Check the TFT monitor as well. HP panels are not as good as those from Sony / Toshiba/ Fujitsu. Check the contrast and the reaction time.
  3. Interesting enough. Perhaps that the best use of the console. Actually, games for Xbox 360 are not quite ready yet. Instead of using it to play music and watch DVD, a better use of the box is to let it keeps us warm...
  4. Distributed computing is quite useful in calculating results involving huge matrix with plenty of elements. It is also quite useful in trial and error type of calculation. I have read about testing of mathematical hypothesis using distributed computing and many researches from the biology field also need help from computers recruited this way. One drawback of distributed computing is that there are no ways to test the validity of the output from the every client. If one client fakes the results, the whole project would be screwed up as there is no good way of pinpointing the black sheep. It also poses a security threat to the computer involved by introducing software which penetrates the firewall and listen to the Internet all the time.
  5. Most of the people would cheer at google while shouting at micro$oft because we all hate Microsoft. Any competitor would be able to win support from the computer world no mater it is Firefox, OpenOffice, Google or Linux. Google has won over the war with M$ over internet mail boxes, over the war in search engine and I bet that blogger.com would have a brighter prospect then space. Everyone knows the intimate relationship between sun and google and I hope that by including google in the camp of openoffice, we will have an alternative to Microsoft?s products and will phase out the old as Firefox displaces Internet Explorers from the computing world.
  6. My first site was made about five years ago, as a personal site. The host was actually provided by my university and it was pretty stable and fast. It was really a good site to host bigger files because even mp3 and avi and be uploaded. However, the host did not provide scripting support, that's why I have to look for another site with php support and MySQL database. I have never attempted making sites other than personal ones. Although I have quite a lot of hobbies, I simply lack the time to put all of them online. I have never come into a good host anyway. Xisto is fine in many aspect, but not good in the sense that it is a post to host system.
  7. Interesting paper. It makes me wonder whether I actually have one of these gadgets around me.

    Which Linux?

FreeBSD strictly speaking is not Linux. FreeBSD like other BSD systems stem from the orginal Unix system. Linux is a variant of Unix. It is built in with a set of shell functions in a GNU system. GNU stands for GNU is not Unix. Linux does share a lot of similarity with FreeBSD. If you are comfortable with any kind of Linux, you are good with BSD too. I would recommend Fedora (formerly known as Red Hat Linux) Linux for its simplicity. The support community is large too. SuSE, Mandrakes and debians are popular too. Fedora, however, is unique in the sense that you can often get packaged binaries from the huge community while you may have to compile from source if you are with other packages of Linux.
  9. I would rather advice you to zip all your files using winZIP and upload to your site using the username and password for cPanel and then use the file manager option to unzip the 100+ files by a click. It is much faster this way. You may as well do all the mods before uploading the files instead of editing and uploading many times.
  10. It depends on the model you are using. I don't have bluetooth either but I can download mp3s to my flash memory and copy them manually to my cellphone memory and then choose them as the ringtones. I think this method works for all motorola cellphones too. The most important thing is that you should be able to access the phone main memory, this can either be done by bluetooth, Infrared or USB (if you have the official connection package - you can download it freely from some sites) or copying. If you open a server and download mp3s to the phones, your company may charge you for data transfer fee. So the old method may be the best.
  11. I think the compression is more or less the same for gzip and zip. Gzip uses the LZ algorithm used in zip and PKZIP. It is said that with text such as source code or English the size is reduced by 60-70%. The compression is better than that achieved by LZW. But I think it may not be as good as LZH. If you want preformance, 7z or rar outperform zip and gz. But I think the choice is also depends on the platform you are using. Zip is more portable in Win32 systems but gz generally rules in Unix and Linux systems. The compression speed, I think is faster in ZIp. Gz can have various level of compression for you to choose, but the highest level takes much CPU resources.
  12. I think out of all security exploits, social engineering is the easiest to prevent. The media have always been reminding us about deception and fraud happening day by day in real life. Growing up in a deceptive world, we learn to be smart at an early age. There is no reason why we can't be smart in the computing world. It seems to me that these people who fall victim to social engineering are those who lose their common sense when they are in front of the screen. That's really bad. I keep receving stupid emails from my friends, telling me if you dont send it to ten of your friends then you will be in bad luck etc. These tricks are simply too banal but I dont know why people still respond to such calls. Perhaps the internet really makes people stupid. Notice from mayank: Double posts..fixed it.
  13. The Chinese should really improve on the general living of the people before trying to put men in space. Many in the rural areas are still earning a meager amount of money and are struggling with livelihood. The space mission in China has somewhat been a propaganda thing. They bought technology from the ailing nation, Russia, and put their brand on it. While it serves the purpose of showcasing the nation rising power, I think it just also shows the social inequality around it the country. It is just like the Soviet in the 70s. Even they are struggling to go on, the Soviet still spend a lot of money on unimportant areas like sports, because they think that the medals they won from the Olympic Game could win them respect from other countries. But I think people will be more proud of having, say, 100% Internet broadband, then to have a man on a remote planet.
  14. I like the new virus protection feature from Gmail. Gmail has been much better than Yahoo and Hottmail in all aspects but is only not as good as them in virus protection. I am not sure how good the virus protection is, but I expect it to be on par with hotmail's mcafee virus scan. Probably, Gmail is providing this for its own benefit. Mass mail viruses tend to create huge traffic to the SMTP and POP3 servers and to stop them before it spreads uncontrolled should be an obligation of the email provider.
  15. I dont like Nokia's phones. They are usually clumsy, and the user interface is not friendly.
  16. I know they keep on "counting" up the free space they are offering at gmail, but my emails at gmail keep on going up as well. I now reach 10% of limit, that is 266MB something in my mailbox. As broadband and Multimedia, including 3gp videos taken by cell phones, MPEG-4 movies taken by digital cameras and even DVD recorder are getting more and more popular, 266MB is not at all large. I download 500GB per month, and 266MB is just an insignificant amount. (takes less <10 minutes to download.) The need for bandwidth and free space is going up exponentially, and I really wonder when we will start shouting and screaming for the meager free space we got, as we did shouting at the stupid hotmail (I have stopped using this stupid thing from microsoft). Perhaps, we will all have our SMTP and POP (IMAIL) server some years later and free email will become history.
  17. IPB is somewhat like a solution, it is well designed, with numerous functions, but you cannot expand it or customize it easily. You have support from the official team but you don't have much support from the community. PHPBB is a GNU scripts and so the support community is huge. You may find mods of the scripts very easily but it is a headache to apply all of them according to your wish. PHPBB is also quite vulnerables to new attack. CPU resource-wise, I think IPB is less resource hungry, but my board is really to small to make a judgment on this.
  18. Pros: 1) Many people are having it, so you won't have any problems with support from peers for upgrading information, hacks, tricks and etc. 2) There are numberous books on IPod and ITune so even an idiot can be quite good at it.Cons: 1) It is fat, big, bulky and it looks terribly stupid. 2) older models have a old-fashioned monocolor monitor, which makes it quite interesting to historians 3) It runs on harddisk and you may have problems while taking it for jogging and etc 4) it is heavy 5) You have much better choices. 6) all of the above.
  19. I have four computers in my flat. All are assembled. Assembled computers have a lot of advantages over branded ones. I can choose every component myself, from the transformer to the CL2 RAM. Computers from those major companies don?t offer such options. You may not choose the motherboard, which is one of the major factors affecting the performance of computers from them and even they let you choose the RAM size, you my not choose the RAM latency. Those computers are also often limited in expansion options. There may be only two DIMM slots and you may find that you can?t add RAM to the computers later. You may not choose the DVD burner, of which quality varies horribly from brand to brand, say a good Pioneer burner vs a bad LG burner. There are no specifications as to what LCD monitors they offer. It may be a 450:1, 12ms inferior model. To sum up, everything built in branded computers are second-rated. Why should I buy a branded one then?
  20. I am still using an ultra slow connection of 6Mbps ADSL. There are actually 10M/10M services in the market, and even FTTB 100M/100M services, but I live a quite remote area and so my home is covered by these new comers. When I start to work, I may move to place where there is FTTB connection. ADSL is simply too slow to be used.
  21. I was referred to this site by http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. I have been looking for a free host for quite a long time, but you see, free hosts sometimes just come and go. The ranking at free-webhosts are not that accurate but the reviews there my users are quite indicative. I always look at those discredit comments. Often they are posted by disgruntled users and so they are more accurate than compliment comments. Then I look for one with no grave errors. Xisto is one of those satisfying my requirement and the comments from users are not that bad really. So I came here and have a look. This is a process which has a certain element of luck. Xisto does not have a high rank and I don?t really know in the first place whether it is a good host. But, somehow, the host is so far so good.
  22. That's really bad. I can't think how I can survive without broadband. I have been downloading 500GB per month for about a few months. I used to download 3GB per day but now due to the popularity of BT, I can download 20GB per day. Broadband is the most wonderful thing in the modern world. Anyway, I still cannot tolerate my broadband, which is a 6M ADSL, I am jealous of my friends who have FTTB coverage, with a speed of 100M and is even cheaper than the ISP I am with ! I will get that with my home is covered,
  23. I have been with Xisto for about a year now. Xisto was a better host back then, with no such thing as the Credit System. I don't know whether the change to the credit system was a result of abous from users, or the admin had turned more ambitious for advertisments, but frankly, I cannot say I like the system. Xisto, though, is a very stable host. It is actually more stable then hosts from big companies. I build my blog on Xisto and the downtime of my blog is less then those hosted at Space and Xanga. The uptime of Xisto is really impressive.
  24. Sorry for being mean, but what if the boy is so unfornately that he dies at an early age, should we say Google dies at the age of three. What if Google goes bankrupt, should the boy bears the burden of having the same name as a company?I dont think his parents had thought about all these carefully before naming the child. The child is so unlucky and I fear that he will be teased by his fellow classmates when he enters school... What a pity.
  25. To me, every game without cheat codes or trainer is hard I am not a good gamer. With FF7 and FF8, I edited the savegames to give me the levels I want. With wargames like AOE, Warcraft and C&C Generals, I use the trainer to get more resources. With FPS gamse like Quake and Doom I enter god mode immediately aftet I was in the game. I dont think games should really give troubles to people. After all, they are just games...
