  1. The thing is with your site Ash is that i have to register to view the forums, so if i want an answer to something and google it and get your site returned, if i really want to know the answer i have to register then i can read the forum/topic and problem solved. I have no need to return!I suspect most of your members do the same thing, register simply for a one time answer/read. If you made your forums readable by guests then your member numbers would probably drop, but at the same time the members you do get will either be valued posters or spammers, it would stop the one time readers completely.
  2. You should try the Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB) Excellent reviews, comments etc... and a good place to base your decisions on as well as being able to review the movie yourself to say what you think about it. I think it also has trailers and stills from the movie and sometimes other little features. Be warned that it also has plot spoilers so dont read those if you dont want to know the plot!
  3. I may be tempted to join at some point, computers are a fairly big part of my life! However, some feedback first, im not sure i like the layout much... It would be nice to have the white background more greyish, to take the edge off the bright white, it all seems a bit harsh on the eye at the moment IMHO.Some sub forums would be useful too Like hardware, software, networking all within the computer forum and perhaps some divisions in the programming one too.
  4. Nopes, USB isnt on the list at all as i disabled USB booting.I think i shall have to dig deeper into the PXE and exactly how it works to find a solution.
  5. You need to ask yourself why they are blocking torrents first. Two possible ones:1) Save Bandwidth, imagine if everyone in his dorm was downloading movies 3 times a week, thats a lot of bandwidth that the college needs for other purposes and may be charged extra for.2) Legality, i know that a lot of torrents are perfectly legal, but most arent or contain adult/explicit/unsavoury content. There are many reasons why an educational facility would want to prevent this sort of thing ending up on their computers (or crossing their networks)
  6. Aye, already checked the boot from USB thingy on a spare machine i have here, no luck! I think its going to come down to sending out an email!! Disturbed my morning cup of tea and forum time this morning  HAd to actually do something!!! Cant find any mention of it on the net so im just assuming the boot server is mis-identifying the primary boot device (hard drive) and assuming the USB drive is the one to use.
  7. Ok, at work we have all the computers booting into a PXE (Pre eXecution Environment) which we use for imaging the machines and such, sort of like a mini OS that is capable of basic functions like formatting hard drives, downloading and then applying image files to the drives and such like. It works fine. However, it has a strange bug....We have two preboot servers which have the boot instructions and what not for the machines, one for the linux machines which are sadly very few, and one for the windows machines, by default every PXE (because the PXE is on the network card/BIOS and not part of the OS) goes to the linux server 10.5 first, then when it realizes it has windows it is sent to the windows server 10.6 but if a USB flash drive is plugged in it will hang at the 10.5 server and never get redirected to the 10.6 and hence it wont boot, it will sit at the PXE bios screen all year. The solution is simple, take the drive out, restart and bingo, or exit the PXE with the escape key before it starts. However, users arent that smart and it means i have to get up and go to their machine to do it, and im lazy. Hence the problem :(So does anyone know why this happens or a possible fix? The only thing i can think of is that the server is mis-identifying the data on the flash drive for linux data somehow (im thinking perhaps open office files? or scratch, as we use these here and i believe they were originally linux based) and trying to boot from the linux server fails and just hangs. OR the boot server is trying to make it boot from the USB drive and failing silently. Any ideas?

    Lumix G1

I bought my G1 nearly a week ago now having only used a phone camera and a bog standard 5mp digi cam before this. But i fancied something i could learn with to get custom shots with all the settings set manually etc...but also something which, to start with, i can point and shoot. And i can say im not disappointed. Im a bit of a newbie in the camera world, im tech savvy but still getting used to the camera terminology so this might not be the most in depth review but it should be useful! So, lets get it out of the box. Mine was a display model so it had nearly full charge and a memory card already installed, but if yours hasnt then youll find the battery door on the bottom right hand side and the card door on the right edge. Sliding the card door open it does feel a little cheap and standard, and personally i would like to see the door bulked up about to cope with the continual opening and closing, after all this is a camera im going to be using for a fair few years. The card slots in nicely, not too stiff to lock in which is nice compared to my card reader... The battery compartment is a lot sturdier and locks in nicely with a sliding latch, it's recessed so accidental openage shouldnt be an issue. (Yes, i made that word up).Time to stick a lens on it, i bought the kit which comes with a 14-45mm lens, but the same procedure applies to other lenses too. Firstly take off the lens caps and they seem of good quality, not cheap plastic! Hold the lens against the body and twist it to about 45 degrees and line up the red dot on the camera and lens you will feel it slip in to the housing, twist the lens so the dot is now at the top and your lens is securely fitted in place. It is a satisfying feel and again feels like quality rather than cheapness. Thats it! Provided you have a charged battery you can take photos. I find it easier to use the LCD display so flip that out to the left and twist it so it is upside down and then i find it easier to fold it back into place on the camera body, this is a good feature of the screen as you can have it screen side in for carrying and protecting the LCD, or screen side out for easy viewing and for more awkward shots fold the screen out and angle it. Once you have the screen as you want it push the small On/off switch/lever forward and you will see the amazing speed with which the camera powers on, much less than a second, and probably less than half a second, it really is good. More than likely the camera will be set to intelligent auto (A red IA symbol). This is perfect for point and shoot of any subject, person, animal, scenery, macro etc... It really is ideal. It will auto select the aperture, ISO, focus... everything, all you need to do is zoom the lens, half depress the shutter button (very easy to feel the half way point so you dont accidentally shoot blurred images all the time) and within a second, usually less, the image will be focussed upon one (for portrait/macro) or many (for scenery etc...) points which will be shown by a brief green square. If taking longer shots with not much going on (eg a blue sky with no clouds) focussing can take some time as the camera has nothing to focus on, and when doing macro it can pay to hold your hand behind the object if it is full of holes or something such as the space between the petals of a flower as the camera will tend to focus on the background, but this is solved in macro mode. Fully depress the shutter and you will hear the very satisfying slick of the shutter and your image will be displayed on the LCD for a few seconds. To play back your saved images press the green play button and use the arrow buttons to scroll through the images. For a grid view roll the function wheel on the front-right of the camera to the left, to zoom roll it right. Ill talk about the function button later. So now you can see the brilliant qualities of the IA mode and how useful it is. But the camera has other built in functions too such as the scene (SCN) mode, macro mode (flower icon) and portrait mode (face icon). all of these can be used as-is to take photos of that type, my two favourites are the SCN mode and using the sunset mode or the macro mode with the flower settings. The flower macro mode is particularly useful when you want the focal point to be something like a flower rather than the gaps between petals as the screen is divided into 9 equal cells and by default the camera tries to focus in the centre cell or as close to the centre as possible so you can place the centre of the flower in the middle of the middle cell and 95% of the time it will focus correctly, then simply pan the camera to get the flower or focal point in the right area of the shot and take the photo. Very useful mode! There are also custom modes in which you set specific values, the most used one for me is the shutter priority mode (S) in which you can set the shutter speed from 60 seconds to thousandths of a second, perfect for high speed photos or longer shots like trailing car lights etc... Be aware though that nothing is automatic here except the focus, you will need to manually set the ISO sensitivity to get the right exposure. There are also aperture modes and fully custom modes which i havent explored enough to write about yet. Overall the range of shots available is impressive, i have some excellent shots of a red damselfly in vivid colours against a green leaf, the damselfly is about 2000px or more in size on-screen which was taken using the flower option of the macro mode with impressive clarity. And on the opposite end of the scale i have some lovely warm shots taken using the sunset mode which is focussed to infinity with the land going for a fair few miles and the sky creeping in. The zoom lens you get in the camera kit is ideal for someone such as me who is branching into the SLR arena (even though the G1 isnt strictly an SLR...) in tele mode (IE at 14mm) it has an impressive field of view which allows very wide scenery shots to be taken and would be useful for indoor shots of events like parties, christmas etc... and at full telescopic range of 45mm you get a fair zoom, maybe 4x or more, i dont really know, but it is more than capable of taking shots 50m away of medium to large birds for example, even though it looks small on the LCD screen or the view finder, once at 100% zoom the images are actually pretty large and zoomed in, at large image size the images are 4000x3000px and the screen itself is only probably 400px in ordinary monitor resolution but you will get used to the sizing after use. So far a few minor issues have been the shutter speed being slightly too slow in IA mode, but that can be changed in the custom modes and due to inexperience it has been sometimes hit and miss with the macro focussing. But both of these can be cancelled out with experience. The camera comes with:two lens drawstring bags, one of which is big enough for the camera as a temporary casea shoulder strap (for safety the manual says use it for your shoulder but i hang it from my neck)the 14-45mm lens (only in the "kit" version, not the "body only" box) both lens caps and the body cap.camera to TV lead camera to PC (usb) leadAC charger with socket for AC>camera lead but none supplied)DriversImage editing software (silkypix) The kit contains everything you need to go out and take photos EXCEPT a memory card, so be sure to buy one or make sure you have one to use. Since mine was charged i took it out the box and took some photos of the lake nearby which came out very well. I would suggest buying a tripod, i went for the joby gorilla pod as it is more versatile, if you choose the joby pods then be sure to get the SLR one or the model above which can both support the weight of the camera and a small lens, the bigger pod can hold 6lbs so that will cover almost every situation and lens! The function wheel on the front is a very clever idea, it has no set function but is mapped by the function in use, so for example when using the playback function the wheel is mapped to zoom (scroll right) and grid view (left) in IA mode it is mapped to the white balance and in the custom modes clicking the wheel changes its function from ISO, white balance, shutter speed and aperture depending on the mode you are using. It is an extremely versatile and useful little toggle, much easier than the arrow buttons on the back of the camera and cleverly placed to be just above the natural position of your index finger for easy use during shooting. There are many more features i havent mentioned here such as the burst mode, self timer etc... i will mention the burst mode briefly though as it could help wildlife photographers! Above the on/off switch is another toggle, the second option above self-timer is the burst mode, if you select this you can press and hold the shutter button to constantly take photos up to 3/second until the card is full, useful for things like flying birds or insects or running animals so you can select the best shots. And remember to use the self timer mode for those long shutter speed shots to eliminate the shaking of the camera when you press the shutter! To summarizeOverall i think the camera is superb! I give it a 98/100 the 2 missing points are just there because nothing deserves 100 and the card door could be more sturdy. The battery life is excellent, i took 317 photos, all using the LCD screen, image stabilization and auto focus in about an hour with the camera on all the time and didnt loose a single bar of battery (measured in thirds). The average image size when set to large size and fine quality is about 3mb so make sure your card is big enough, i used about a gig with those 317 shots over an hour period. So if you were going out for a whole day i would suggest at least a 4gb card, to be safe id say an 8gb which is the size i use. That way you can comfortably stay out all day taking multiple photos of each shot to select the best and be sure your memory wont fill up! The camera will take SD and SDHC (is that right?) cards and can save in JPEG or RAW format, but of course the RAW images are absolutely huge!!!The LCD is suitably bright for all conditions and the electronic view finder is brilliant. It shows all the information that is on the LCD and has a small wheel to the left to focus the EVF display, so the use of the EVF or LCD is purely personal preference.Focussing is very easy and zooming is just as easy, and all but the tiniest of hands will find the camera very comfortable to hold. The advert shows a girl holding the camera and taking photos with one hand and this is not unreasonable! It would take a very steady hand not to shake somewhat but it is comfortable and light enough to hold with one hand. The design is extremely good! The buttons and interfaces are very well designed and easy to use, the menus are split into pages of 6 entries each so the font is clearly visible and large, the buttons are small yet easy to press without hitting multiple ones by accident and the function wheel adds another dimension to the abilities of the buttons and toggles. Remember to enjoy your camera! No matter what make! And if you are thinking of getting the G1 i recommend it highly! Especially if you are a leisure photographer! I have some shots up at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ in the "Ingreborne" gallery. But this site is still under construction so be patient! All the photos currently there were taken with the G1 and the 14-45mm lens with no filters.
  9. The forum ignore feature would be extremely useful.... Any chance mods?
  10. I believe in the gift of knowledge, for we all know how to slice up a steak with a knife do we not? IS that knowledge not applicable to hurting or killing other people? Indeed it is, but you'd still help me if i asked how to butcher a pig!The recovery disk solution is probably your best option here. If the account you are using has enough privileges you could try downloading a running a brute force program (google windows password brute forcing program) but be warned, these programs could contain viruses etc... as they are written by hackers....Another option is to try typing "control userpasswords2" into the run box on the start menu, though i expect that will be blocked by the privileges. There is a solution out there, theres always a way to hack something, no matter what it is, you just need to find it and i think the recovery disk is the best route for that. There are tips if you google "windows *VERSION HERE* recovery disk password recover" And put your windows version (xp, vista etc...) in the *version here* section, you should get plenty of results, some useful, some not so. You might also be able to use a linux distro to gain access to the files to back them up before doing a re-install etc...If you do use the windows recovery disk be sure not to accidentally re-install without backing up.... And note that the disk will not have an in built tool for password recovery, that would be foolish, but you can learn the basic commands needed by googling the right terms. I dont know them myself but i know it can be done.
  11. To clarify, anything sent to the browser before a line like: header("some code here"); Will cause this error. For example: Echo "Redirecting....";header("location:anothersite.com"); Oo i just realized you come from Exeter rvalkass! Nice place... Holidayed there three times now Back on subject.... You can try re-downloading the installer archive if you didnt change anything, could just be a dodgy download source. Or if you downloaded a custom or modded version of the system then download the official one and see if the error goes away.
  12. I do report all the posts i think are rubbish, which as you probably know, are quite a few I see the problems with the moderation/post count system but i think the benefits are there, it stops the irritation and in the case of a post count system it saves time for the mods. Even if the post count was at 5 it would severely limit the amount of rubbish posted in the MMO forum as the spammers would need to spam 5 times or more to get access, though i guess you could argue that it might increase spam on the forums i think most of them will just go somewhere else, especially if the error message doesnt display the post count required (EG not "Error, you need a post count of 5 to post here" but instead "Error, you do not have permission to post here") I think 99% of spammers would just leave at that point, the rest would need to use the shoutbox or another topic to ask why they cant post and that would then (i believe) draw them into the community where they would stay and contribute to the forums.
  13. Phpdesigner has the ability to highlight brackets, curly and standard () and {} which is useful for all logic gates (IF, WHILE, LOOP) etc... it highlights the corresponding closing bracket if you select the opening one and vice versa, this also works with nested brackets which is extremely useful for finding where the code will naturally flow after or during a logic gate. And since, in php, you cant have a logic gate without brackets it pretty much does the same thing as you mentioned above
  14. The Make Money Online (MMO) forum is really annoying me, i mean we get all these one shot posters spamming their pathetic "Oo do this you'll be rich" crap all over the forums, the mods cant do anything about most of them because they dont break the rules but they just irritate us and clearly spout rubbish.I know a way to make money online, its called selling something!!Seriously, can we close down this silly little sub forum or have it on an approval only basis based on post count or on moderators approving the posts? We already have this silly little system on the internet forum, and for the life of me i cant work out why we have it there, its just irritating, i end up posting in other sub forums because of it, and yet we give the spammers and trash-spouts free reign over the MMO forum for what? Nothing!! They come here once then never again theres just no need for it! Some of the long term users do post in there, so lets just have it moderator approved and be done with it. Theres no other reason for it!! Its just so irritating!!Lets vote...
  15. Have you tried submitting a ticket recently? If you havent tried since this post then retry now, it might have been a little glitch that has been sorted. If you do submit the ticket let them know about the email you sent too so they dont reply twice :(If its still not working then reply in this thread to let the mods and admins know that the system is still buggy.
  16. Hello and welcome! First of all, let me congratulate you on your use of english, it always amazes me how many Indians join this site and how good their english is! Where do you guys learn it? You speak a lot better than most of the people here in the UK!As for learning how to make websites, i would say the opposite to what has been said above. I would say learn HTML by doing it, rather than using a service like freewebs to make the site for you and then look at the code. I think it would be easier to learn a little bit of HTML (For example the <Table> tag) and then just make a page with just one table. Then play about with things like the height, width, number of rows etc.... that way you can see cause and effect. Then move on to DIVs for example, then images, then video, sound and then some other languages like CSS. With just HTML and CSS you can make a website! My favourite site to learn from is tizag.com there they have tutorials for HTML, CSS, PHP, MYSQL, Javascript etc.... So many, start with the HTML ones and you will quickly learn it And dont be afraid to experiment, if the tutorial says to make a page with a black background dont be afraid to change it to a red background and then change the colour of the text too and stuff like that, you wont learn well by copying what the tutorials say, instead experiment. When i started learning HTML i learnt how to set the background image ( <body background=image.jpg> ) and once i learned that and a little javascript i just decided i wanted to be able to change the background when i clicked on a link. So i looked up google for how to use javascript on a link (OnClick) and then how to set the background image and put it all together and it worked eventually. Thats the best way to learn, if a site tells you to make a page with one table with two rows then why not add a third row that contains a little image like an "Edit" button. Sure, clicking it wont do anything but you are expanding on what the tutorial tells you to do and you will learn quickly. If you have any questions ask on these forums, there are loads of people here who know so much!
  17. I use PHPDesigner2007 Personal edition. Its for non-commercial use only though. But it does an excellent job, its not as light as some of the notepad based editors but it does have a preview mode for HTML, support for all the common web languages (all the ones you listed and more) can be attached to a local apache server (i use xampp) so you can preview PHP and other server side languages (ok, its just a built in browser window, but it saves you changing windows and refreshing each time). And it has a nice, full featured yet simple to use interface. Try download.com to get it, i think it may be discontinued by the author as they have gone more to the pro side of the software which is paid for. This is for windows by the way... i dont know what system you are running currently.
  18. Ah perfetcimo!I shall order my plan tomorrow then once ive verified my site works :angel:Its all going too smoothly at the moment... everything worked except the min-width CSS property in IE and that was easily solved.... something simply must go wrong before now and the time it goes live!!Thanks though, thats all i needed to know
  19. Can anyone tell me if the logic plan (the cheapest) has the following enabled:Apache rewrite module, PHP 5+, php_json extension and php_curl extensions. If not i will probably have to buy the logic pro but for what i want it would be $90 a year for pro, or about $30 for logic plan. I dont mind paying extra for those features above to be enabled :(If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. Setting up my site now, finalizing it all and then finally putting my earnings to good use. Thanks all.
  20. Ive struggled with that too, as a work around you can simply use the images (presuming they are going in a HTML email) with a URL path eg: <img src=http://mysite.com/images/newsletters/09/june/image01.jpg> But i cant help if you need them as file attachments for user download.
  21. What a camera! Took it over the country park, the sun was pretty low so that restricted me to shooting with the sun behind or to the sides as it was really strong, i got some nice close ups like i described with the depth of view (uploading a 4mb file to a photo sharing site... bad idea.. ill keep typing...) also got some nice telephoto shots and wide angle scenery. Really impressed with the size and weight of the camera, it fits perfectly in one hand (i had the strap on) and is comfortable to hold, its also nice and light and everything is small enough to fit in nicely, and yet large enough to be able to press individual buttons without miss-hitting. Battery life is very good, took over a hundred photos without loosing a single bar of battery (admittedly it only has 3 bars but i took some photos in the morning, after work and then once i got to the park and almost all of those used the LCD display, so fairly battery intensive). These photos i have compressed and scaled with the program that comes with the camera: http://i39.tinypic.com/2vn3oty.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/rs7mh1.jpg This one i really really like due to the depth of field but i did blur it a bit probably from hand shake or slightly out of focus so its not completely perfect but i really like it, it has a soft feel and the colour of the other flowers behind add to the depth IMHO! Im still uploading a full sized original image from the camera, ive set it to 99% quality to try to get the file size down but its still 3mb so its taking a while. Ive set the camera to shoot in large, hight quality JPEG files which are 4000x3000px and about 3-4mb in size so even with the standard lens it looks small on the LCD but when you get it to 100% size on the computer you can crop the parts you want (eg a bird, tree etc...) and the size/zoom is really impressive! The last image is finally ready! http://i40.tinypic.com/2lj4ac4.jpg Its at 99% quality but i dont see any loss there, i really like the colours and lighting from the sun! Off to bed now and going to try a long exposure at the sky, see if i can pick out any stars, its good fun using a long exposure on the road and capturing the car light trails!
  22. Well i bought the G1 last night, the only one left was a display model and i got the camera, a gorrila SLR pod and a 4gb card all for ?507, the camera itself is ?489 so thats alright. Got all the bits with it and when i opened it up to my card in i found an 8GB card already inside as they had been using it in the shop, bargain! Thats ?50 on its own! So ive got 16gb of effective storage :(So far really pleased with the camera, the customizable shutter speeds are really good, got some nice car light trails and a nice water effect from the tap! The resolution is brilliant, average image size using a large JPG file in high quality is 4mb. The time from flipping the on switch and the LCD and camera being ready is virtually instant. You could hapilly walk around with it off and as soon as you see that rare animal you can flip the switch and take a photo, no need to carry it turned on etc... The intelligent auto mode is great for beginners, point it, click it, sorted! and the tracking mode in IA mode lets you select objects almost, so i pulled the camera away, held the shutter half down to track a ?2 coin, then moved the camera in to get the blur effect from the background and it looks really professional. I know there are other ways to achieve that effect but this way works good too.The close ups are really good, the only thing is the shutter speed seems a bit low in macro mode but you can change that. Overall its excellent, the only thing i would say is the shutter is a bit slow, so if you wanted to film high speed fairly close stuff like swooping birds, a game of tennis or the F1 from the sidelines you might struggle with the shutter speed on the standard lens, but you can always buy other lenses.Low light photography is good too, and the electronic view finder is good!I may well post a review later on, taking it out over the country park for a test drive tonight, see how i get on!
  23. This is, uncategorically, the most stupid theory ive ever heard in my entire life..... Seriously... Its ridiculous.I dont know what else to say... i really dont other than if anyone believes this then they are frankly clinically insane and should see a doctor. There really is nothing more i can add to this.
  24. I would imagine so but im not sure.It cant really be written in much else except some sort of assembly code
  25. Can you please explain what you men by "edit windows"?Do you mean make changes, EG settings?Or do you literally mean programming windows?Because to actually edit the program code you need either the source code (not available) or a decompiler (probably wont work) so really its not possible, even if it was possible its illegal. However, you can freely edit most linux codes as long as they fall under the GPL or GNU licenses. But to do so requires a high level of knowledge and program skill. It is not possible to use a program to make an operating system from scratch. Forget that idea, and if you are asking for a program to help you code an operating system then you dont have the skill required to make an operating system. So again, give up on that idea too.
