Is Voip Good Technology? what are your thoughts
pbrugge replied to mystmag's topic in Science and Technology
I use Voip for some time now and sure specialy at the beginning I had some doubts about the quality and so but I was gladly amazed whit it. I use Voipbuster ( http://www.voipbuster.com/dashboard ) because of the fact they provide free landline calls to losts of country's and provided me with a free number (unlike skype where you have to pay to get inbount calls). It alsohas free p2p calls and the quality is fine. Sometimes there is a small echo but that happens only when I am downloading with more as 90% of my bandwide. Overall I think the quality of Voip becomes better and better everyday -
The only reason I did not bought myself an ATI card is that I use linux 96% of the time and I know that there are drivers from ATI which you can use but that the performance of those are left behind comparing to Nvidia.I also like to see beter driver support from ati and so I singned the petition to because when Nvidia can do it why should Ati??

I think if you really want to play windows based games you need a duall boot system.Sure you can try Cedega and I am sure most games will runon it (some even better as in windows) but it can be a pain in the **bottom** to get them to work.Linux can be a entertainment OS and you also can play lots of nice, fun and good games on it ( see http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ) for example. Sound and Video are also wel supported for instance mplayer, and xine are well known and good videoplayers that support most filetypes. For music xmms (winamp clone) or amarok are good options imoBut you will need to step down of your "I want windows games to work" thought if you want to run only Linux since linux is not windows. Else keep sticking with windows or try duall boot

Mhh I use Linux now for years and sure you did put some time in this but its kinda short on info and mostly based on persanal likings.I say that because you only talk about KDE and say its the most populair?? wtf are you talking about comes in my mind when I see that. How about Gnome??, Fluxbox??, Xfce?? and so on and so on.Where is the info about where to look for drivers or look for info about it?? You talk about spyware and viruses that run on linux but you dont provide any info about it. LIke what spyware? Give some examples since I never seen spyware on my linuxbox. Viruses?? where and when will they install and what will they do?Kopette = Trillian?? oke and what about Gaim??? You dont provide any info about Linux or its installation at all only give us your persenal opinion about it and give info that is not clear nor complete.Like some questions I would have when I am new into linux:Why cant I use .exe or how can I run them?Where is the defragmentate option? What is .deb .rpm .tar.gz .tar.bz?? and how do they work? What is a kernel and how does it work??What is CLI ??Where can I find it??Can I try it without having to install it??How do I confire the internet??How can I make my nvidia or ati card wotk with 3D??Hell I cant see my windows partition at all?? How do I set it so it shows in my filemanager??How can I set a duall lboot system??How about architectures like x86? ppc?? what are they??And so on and so on.....I miss allot of info herebtw..Mandrake = Madriva allready for some time nowRed Hat = Fedora-core (Red Hat still exists but for homeusers its Fedora)

Did you put that *.tar file on your desktop in the firstplace or is it at a difrent location like ~/downloads (~ stands for home folder). When you are sure it should be on your desktop it could be that it is a hidden-file in nautales you can unhide it by clicking hitting "ctrl+h" or in a terminal with "ls -a ~/Desktop"But I have the feeling you did set it to another location.

Whats wrong with the "old" msn? Oke sure it is cool to see the other person and that you can talk to him/her in reall time but msn allready can do that. All those dynamic avatars and smillys also can look cool for a while but after some time I have seen it and switsch back to the 'normal' stuff.Imo its just more memory eating, bloating stuff from our good friend microsoft
-
How about servers that run 24/7? It trully doesn matter aslong you have the ability to kill some memory eating processes ones a while like some windows programs are (oke also some *nix programms) But trully leaving your pc 24/7 does not harmit at all

Linux Ports For Mmorpg's Not enough linux games
pbrugge replied to fraudulentpeanut's topic in Computer Gaming
Erm yes I am a linux user and yes I use debian but erm?? Xorg and Xfree86 are no widowmanager but the X Window System on which the desktop (widowmanagers) is build (fluxbox, kde, *box etc) as a 'gentoo user you should know that' (I used gentoo for years btw lol I even did a lfs ones) but where lays the different between apt-get install "package" and emerge 'package"? The biggest reason I switched back to debian is that a simple program installation in gentoo could took hours but it sure is good distro specialy because of the "user flags" yes so thx for the advice -
Linux Ports For Mmorpg's Not enough linux games
pbrugge replied to fraudulentpeanut's topic in Computer Gaming
I hope you have been told about xorg to? I would not say that directX is easy to develope games for what I have been told OpenGL is easy to use to but since directX is a complete api developers rater would choose that. btw: stlgoalie making a linux version for rpm based systems only is not a smart thing to do. I understanbd that it is lot of work to make a deb, rpm, tar etc but linux also knows .sh (independed executer/installer). Look at Nvidia they use .sh now EA-gaming uses .sh and many more . -
Linux Ports For Mmorpg's Not enough linux games
pbrugge replied to fraudulentpeanut's topic in Computer Gaming
Why port games? The problem here is the enviroment the game is build in and most of the time this is directX instead of OpenGL. An sollution could be to make the games in OpenGL or port directX for linux so Linux also will have directX support without needing to install 3th party software like cedega.I am not such a gamer so I wont buy cedega but it perhaps could be an option for you? What games are you talking about btw? -
And apt doesn't do that ? Gentoo is a nice system I agree on that. The thing is that you need to read allot as beginner so you also learn more about the command line and install Gentoo at the same time which is good. A big downside of Gentoo is that even a small package instalation can take hours to compile which is also the reason I stopped using it and went back to debian. I tried ubuntu and kubunttu to ones but even with backports selected (ubuntu user know what I mean) I found some libs (and software) to old to compile self downloaded source tarballs. But Ubuntu sure is a great starters distro where you can learn how to work with linux. Dont go slackware its good but for most beginners it could be to difficult to use.

Web Browsers Safest Internet Web Browsers
pbrugge replied to Antihack's topic in Security issues & Exploits
IE, Firefox, Opera, links2 (textbased) and many many moreI have tried and used. IE did go in the box real fast because of the lack on security updates and feature updates like tabbrowsing (opera and mozila allready have that years).Opera was and is a good browser but commes with so many extra stuff that I need years to exporer all the browsers options so I stick to Firefox atm.One bad thing on Opera is that you can set it as IE so websites dont see it as Opera but as IE. Why is that bad you may ask?Well because of this feature the ratings of IE stay higher then they really are. Which gives people the impression that IE still is the biggest of all with distance.I dont say IE is big on the net I say its not so big most people think. -
Why do people still ask what the best operating system is? There is no good answer for that question because it all depence on what you are planning to do with it. So no matter what a poll says on that question it is allways personal and has nothing to do with the reality. For example: A gamer would say windowsXP is the best because its hard to get his/her games to work in linux (if they work at all). This is mostly because of the directX protocol most games are based on. A network operator would say *nix is the best because of the small and secure instalation. There are 1000 arguments to make why windows is the best and 1000 why 8nix is the best but does it matter? No it does not matter at all since it all depence on what you want to do with your os. btw: This is untrue. This story is mostly told by people not knowing how linux works with ram. I dont want to explain it here but take a look arround on the internet and you will see that your ram argument falls appart.

For some time now I am using VoIPbuster a Voip provider where you have free calles to many landlines. The software is easy to use and at the moment VoIPbuster also some times gives out 'free' inbount numbers so you can call and be called When you have registerd your account be sure to make a payed call at least ones in 180 days else your account will be shut and your credits will be gone.

What linux?? What do you want to do with it?? ubuntu = easy installer and debian based. great beginners distro and as easy to install as windows (some say it is even easier). Most things work out of the box and getting software is easy as the abc mandriva (formaly known as mandrake) = also a nice beginners distro but uses a strange path-tree which will seem weird when you go to a more 'pro'distro. it is rpm based so packages are again easy to install but compiling software from source could become a hell because of the path-tree. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/[/url]http://forums.xisto.com/ Again a nice distro and most of the things I said in mandriva also count for fedora but there is one odd thing and that is that some mediasoftware are not supported for installing for example mp3 is something you need to install by a small work arround. There are so many distro's you could pick. Just try a few and see wich one suits you best But remember looks of a distro does not say anything you can custumice it the way you want. If you want a windows look well go ahead, apple look no problem, or something complete new?? its up to you. One sidenote: Linspire is a distro where you need to pay for software that you can get for free on the internet (no I dont mean warez). Its a distro that also comes with the crossover pluggin for windows apps but you will see that most things in windows (like office) also have a opensource friend (like openoffice) that can do the same and more. You could do the way told in that 'tutorial' or if you want to speed up your connection and page rendering without having to go into the about:config menu you also could use a great extension called Fasterfox in which you can do the same: There are 5 settings (which you can set it in ->edit ->prefereces-> fasterfox) namely: 1 default = non optimized 2 couteous = rendering tweaks only, no increase on web server load 3 optimiced = network optimizations for increased performance within the RFC specs 4 turbo charged = Maximum performance, exeeds RFC specs 5 costum = advanced options you can download this extension here Following info will be quoted since it commes from the extension site itself

what you say is true MOST!! not ALL!! and thats the point I wanted to make in the first place OpenSuSe oke that is a project I did not know of but hey I aint into rpm distro's anyway
-
What I mean is that 95% of the people think (and you aply it to) that opensource is always free of charge and thats not the thing. Some opensource projects cost money look for instance at the distro you want to install suse is one of the linux distro's that need to be payed for (or you could try a ftp installation).I dont know if you used a linux distro before but if you are new into it I would reccomend you to try ubuntu a distro based on debian and really easy to use. Rpm based systems like fedora, mandriva and suse are oke but if you want to installsoftware from source or just drivers for your videocard you could come into trouble as a first-time user. Imo ubuntu makes it all easier and even your dad could use it easely :)I am not using ubuntu btw but debian and I use to use gentoo which is also a good distro but I hated the time it needed to compile software (X-server for instance took 8 hours on gentoo and a few minuts on debian).

Mhh if you open a topic about opensource thats cool but please do get the facts right :PFirst of all opensource does not mean free like in free beer if you want to get payed for your opensource project you have the freedom of doing so. For exampe see linux suse and cedega (winex).Opensource is about the freedom and choices you have without any reall restrictions if you like to make a program for windows, *nix or mac its up to you. Did you find a opensource program wich has no multyplatform support well port it to the OS you want it to run on.You have the freedom (again a word with free in it ) to gain money from a project you have started/maked because hey we all need to eat but you have to nake the source vieuwable and modification of the file has to be possible. And beside that it has nothing to do with people hating Microsoft (thats the way it is spelled and not micro$oft) but with people that like to control what is happening in there computer or simply like to write programs others can improve.I am a linux user for 7years now and sure I dont like to use windows but thats not because I hate microsoft but because I like to control my computer the way I want and not the way microsoft thinks is good for me. But thats my free-choice

Microsoft Plans Free Anti-Spyware Program
pbrugge replied to iGuest's topic in Security issues & Exploits
mhh was it not that microsoft was one big spyware os and that you needed a program to remove all inbuild spyware tools?
