  1. I went for a while without any type of spyware/adware/virus scanner on my system, and once I finally installed a spyware and adware scanner, it found a TON. I didn't even realize they were on there. They didn't cause any sort of performance loss, so I couldn't tell they were on there. It found over 100. I haven't gotten any viruses yet, thankfully (however, I am now no longer using Windows). I would probably bet that it's just luck. However, that's only IF you don't have any. I would actually get something for it, you never really know what will happen to it in the future.
  2. Do you have any other settings in your .htaccess file? If you don't, One thing that you could do, is check the AllowOverride directive in your httpd.conf file. If you set it to "AllowOverride All" that should work. However, it has been so long so I've used httpd.conf, that I've forgotten. If you do have other settings in it, then I have no idea what's wrong. If you do add it to httpd.conf, you will need to restart the server.
  3. I know you mentioned that you hadn't messed with the file, but I may have found the error. I belive it could also cause it to say unexpected $ as well. Line 106 does contain the error. Here's a portion of the code: // Get some settings $_output[\'register_users\'] = $SkaLinks->GetParam( \'register_users\' ); ?>'; <--this is the error, and is line 106 fwrite( $f, $content ); fclose; // Mysql dump installationThe error is that there is an unneeded "?>';" in it. The revised code is below: // Get some settings $_output[\'register_users\'] = $SkaLinks->GetParam( \'register_users\' ); fwrite( $f, $content ); fclose; // Mysql dump installation That's the only error I noticed right away. The rest of the file may contain more errors (but I'm not sure). Anyway, try to remove that, and see if it helps any.
  4. You sure are going through a lot. I've also gone through a lot just this year. Life is a pain, but it can also be great (I've learned this many times), I know that it's tough to go through all of that, but it will more than likely be best to just hang in there. At least you have a good paying job. It may take some time, but eventially, everything will be better for you.
  5. I have a huge problem at my school, too. They've blocked sites for stupid reasons. Here's just a few sites:Google Image Search (the rest of google works fine)Wikipedia (I had no idea HOW STUPID the people at my school were, until I found out this was blocked)Sites that contain the word "chat" in the URL (I understand this one perfectly)Sites that contain either "proxy bypass" or "proxybypass" in their URL (I also understand this one)There's much more than that. I can't access Slashdot, Sourceforge, and many other places. It gets on my nerves. However, I do use some proxy byass sites (like stupid censorship). No matter what my school does, someone will more than likely find a way around it. It does make me really mad about some of those sites (like I use Google Image Search for school projects). Anyway, at least I know that my school isn't the only one blocking sites that are actually good.
  6. I think that error means that the script unexpectedly ended (for example, forgetting a } for an if, else, etc. I think it could even be caused by forgetting the close ?> on the script, but I'm not sure). Maybe you should check the code there. However, if it was working a few days ago, that may not be the problem. One last thing: You mentioned it was affecting a lot of your scripts. Are there any scripts you can run that don't have an if, else/elseif, while, or anything else that uses { and }? Sorry, but that's as much as I can help with.
  7. I'm not that great with Linux, but it sounds like you should change the owner of the file. As root, you should issue the command: chown user musicWhere "user" is your user name. You may also have to go through the files in the folder as well. The way to change all the files in your music folder (assuming you have no other folders), would be: chown user music/*That would change all the files' owners in the music folder to the username "user." Well, I hope I helped you with your problem.
  8. My school used to not have very many restrictions on paper (plus, the teachers have used the paper wisely). However, now my school has a paper shortage. Now, they can barely even print from their own computers because of it. With as much money as the schools make from taxes, you'd think it wouldn't be as big of an issue. Another thing, most people in my school place the paper they don't need in the recycling bins. I never realized that schools waste paper so much. I wish other people (including those not in school), would realize just how much they are wasting when they use it for things that aren't extremely important.
  9. I'll pretty much use multiple media players. However, if it's just music that I want to listen to, I use XMMS (X Multimedia System) for Linux. If I want to watch videos, I use the Totem Movie Player or RealPlayer. However, I am unfamiliar with most Linux media players (so I'm limited).
  10. To me, Google seems to index sites very strangely. Also, my site wound up in Google somehow (I guess I had some external links somewhere). It's hard just to get a decent PageRank. Anyway, it probably does take it a while to add it. Just be patient, as everyone said, and then it may show up.
  11. I don't have a banner (nor am I good at making one), but I still think that's a good idea. I know I'd put it on my site (regardless of whether I submit anything or not). Anyway, great idea! I hope it gets more votes.
  12. If it's causing such a bad problem for legal users, they'd have to release a patch to fix that patch (sorta strange to me). It's mistakes like that which make me happy to not use Windows anymore at home. It's also funny how it messed up like it does. Microsoft can try as hard as possible to prevent pirated copies, but it won't help much. There will still be many more pirated copies out. Piracy is just about the hardest thing to fight, no matter what company it involves.
  13. I actually know for a fact that mod_rewrite is enabled for the free hosting, because WordPress uses it for permalinks, and I had a WordPress blog for a while. In the .htaccess file, were many RewriteRules! I don't really know exactly what all used with it would work (I guess everything would), as I don't know much about that particular module. Also, Xisto has many more features that most others do not have.
  14. I can't say very much about other distributions, but I use Fedora Core 4 (which now, they have Fedora Core 5). It's a GUI (or you can choose to have it as a command-line version if you don't pick X Window System during installation). If you limit what you choose to install, it could fit on the 3 GB that you have. However, it seems like your best bet would be a smaller version, like Puppy Linux, which xboxrulz suggested (I have no experience with it, though). Fedora Core isn't too hard to use, either. It installs with a GUI as well. (One note, though, is that FC4 uses 4 installation CDs, which would take a while to download). Oh, and I'm also using it on a minimal HD (6 GB total space).
  15. Normally, I don't get into politics. However, when it comes to how Bush has messed up our country, that's where I talk politics. I can't wait until he is out of office! He promises so much, yet delivers so little. Plus, he's added all this crap that he really shouldn't be allowed to do (like spying on phone conversations). Ha, I pretty much agree with that. I really wished that they didn't elect him like they did. Hopefully, he will be kicked out of office if his approval rating drops too much.
  16. I'm sad to hear what's been happening. I know how close you can feel to a hamster (mine, which I loved a lot, died in January, and I was very upset). Hopefully, though, what you are smelling isn't him (there's still a chance he's just fine). Regardless of what happens, though, try to think about something else. I really do hope you find him alive.
  17. I also use the FireFTP xtension, but that is still useful information for people using other programs. I know I'll be sure to use that advice if I ever use anything else (FireFTP asks to overwrite, regardless of whether it's being uploaded or downloaded). Another thing to pay close attention to is your current directory (on both the upload and download end). Especially if you're using a program such as Filezilla (at least according to what has been said). I know I've made a lot of mistakes with FTP (like not paying attention to the file I uploaded, which would turn out to be a lower version than the one on the server). It's best to be careful, no matter what you're doing, not just double-clicking.
  18. Used to, my list would have been much longer than this. However, I have begun to tolerate things better. Here's my list:-Computer-illiterate computer teachers/ibrarians-People treating animals poorly-People picking on others-Many other typical things (like stealing)-People who pick on other people (no matter the reason)There's also a few other things that I can't think of right now (because it happens very little) and that have already been mentioned.
  19. Wow, some of your situations are much worse than mine! I never thought there'd be so many schools with computer teachers that know very little about computers! I thought that it was just where I lived in Kentucky (which just about the whole state knows very little). Anyway, I also got into a situation at the public library. They have that stupid auto-complete on for IE (and it is a public account, which is actually the only one). I was going to disable auto complete so I could log in to Xisto (I don't like stuff like that). The person there saw me, and apparantly thought I was messing with something else. She told me, "You're not supposed to be on that. If you do that again, you will have your Internet privileges taken away." That was as if I knew nothing about them! It seems like people like that are everywhere. I wonder if there's anything I could possibly do about these people.
  20. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with problems with teachers and computers. However, I bet that even if I did send the pages and describe it more, they wouldn't understand a word of it. Plus, on their list of "trusted" software, they pretty much have only Microsoft products. Here's their list: Most of those, I don't really like. Plus, they don't even acknowledge that there may be better programs that are distributed for free. There are only a select few teachers that actually let me do what I want on a computer (and one is a computer teacher). Anyway, I found out the reason why exactly I got kicked out of the activity (and it did invole the use of FF). However, her explanation was very bizarre. I can't even remember it now. I do know one teacher who knows a LOT about computers (and he's even used Linux). I could probably talk to him about it. One last thing that I want to add: That computer lab teacher did mention that she needs more training. The way it seems to me, is that our school has so little money, that they can't afford it. Whatever the reason, I wish that the teachers wouldn't be so ignorant about the use of a new program. I don't think that I'll ever understand some of these computer teachers.
  21. Heh, that's pretty much all my computer teachers are trained in, as well. My school has a T1 connection (at least that's one thing they did right) so I really like getting on the Internet there. I can tell you this: That teacher had better not ask me for any help at all, because I won't give it to her (she even told me the first day that she wished she knew as much about computers as I do). I don't usually do that to people, but it's just plain ridiculous what they did to me.
  22. Yeah, that's about all you can do is ignore it. However, if it's coming from a fake source (and it is, according to what you're saying), you can report it as a "phishing" site. That would prompt Google to take action. I've done it before, and never received mail from the person again (although I forgot the details of the email). If I remember correctly, I think Google also warns you if it doesn't appear to be coming from where it claims. Anyway, if you ignore them, and they continue to spam you, then you should report it.
  23. My school has finally made me EXTREMELY mad! First of all, I need to explain sosme stuff: Duriing this week (for three days, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) we had testing. We had to sign up for after-testing activities (during those days, we did nothing after we tested). Well, the only one I really wanted, was the Internet. I signed up for it on all three days. On my first day, I did everything I always do when I get on a school computer: Stick in my flash drive, and launch Portable Firefox (I'm not sparking a FF vs. IE conversation) because I hate IE. Nobody said a word. Plus, I'd been using it for over a year at school, anyway. Well, the next day, the computer lab teacher (who is pretty much computer illiterate), started fussing about me using some program she doesn't know about. Well, I'm not the only one who uses it, either. Two of my friends do. Plus, a lot of people were playing games that they downloaded from the Internet. She said that she talked to the principal, and he said that we couldn't use a program that wasn't already on the computer (stupid, isn't it? They even said that it wasn't a concern for viruses, either. I don't get the point in what they said). Oh, and I might add that the principal is also computer illiterate. Well, I did as they said (even though I hate IE), and didn't use Firefox the rest of the day. Now comes the next day (today). It turns out, that they took me out of the Internet just simply because I used Firefox!!!! That ticks me off so bad!!! If you ask me, they're just afraid of people using new programs! I have no idea whatsoever why the heck they would throw such a fit over something like that. Oh, and I want to add: I don't mean to insult them by calling them computer illiterate. Most people around here, though, barely can get by with a computer (literally). I'm always helping people in computer classes with problems (most even the teacher doesn't know how to fix). Anyway, I'm not mad because I couldn't get on the Internet, or use a computer, but I'm mad simply because I got kicked out for using Firefox. All my teachers have seen me use it before. None of them care if I use it, either. Except that ONE teacher. I don't see how she became a computer teacher in the first place!!! I wish there were some schools that at leas knew a LITTLE about computers around here. Anyway, my tennis coach is the technology expert of the school, so I'm going to try to get permission to use Firefox from him.
  24. If the script is going to be used with Xisto, then it wouldn't hurt turning on auto globals on the local machine. Xisto has auto globals (and a few other things I believe) turned on.
  25. I think you are talking about auto globals. If you are, in your php.ini file (I'm not sure where it would be for you), there should be something like: If so, just change Off to On, and things like $_POST['test'], $_GET['test'], etc. would be $test.Once you've changed it, you'll have to restart the server. I've forgotten how XAMPP is set up, so that's all that I can tell you.
