PS3 Announcements PlayStation 3 Announcements
Alegis replied to CyberReaper1405241516's topic in Computer Gaming
In my opinion, it's a multimedia machine with too many crap you don't need and supports better graphics. You won't find innovative gameplay here I'm afraid as developers are running away from the high dev costs. The small third party devs are afraid. People can't try out new risky stuff but will go for the dozenth sequel.Sony themselves announced they're counting on PS2 success for people to buy those expensive blu-ray stuff on regular TVs. They've been nothing but cocky so far, and I read an arrogant remark from Sony almost every day.As well that they're more leaning to a "mix between PC/Console" (they also claimed PS2 was a 'supercomputer' back then) which won't do them any good IMO. People want the simplicity of a console. If you want a PC, you'd better get a real one. And not a ploy of sony to buy the blu-ray in the market and screw the consumer. -
I love it, for a lot of reasons. 1. Fast - Quite fast service, everything loads immediately. 2. Simple - Simple design, everything is right there where you need it and not too much other crap blocking the way. 3. Keyboard shortcuts - Always come in handy to work even faster. 4. Drafts - If you compose a new mail it's saved as a draft immediately. If you close the window or have to reboot your computer you can get back to your mail. Auto-saves the draft after new changes or certain time. When you go from your compose mail window to another it'll ask you if you want to discard the mail or save it. 5. Skip inbox, label - I love this feature, really comes in handy when you're subscribed to a number of mailing lists. You can set filters to 'label' certain mails, and choose that they end up in the label folder and skip the inbox. Other mail services usually just apply a label to them and keep your inbox 'messy'. 6. Efficient archive - All your mails, sent, received ... are saved in the archive. 7. Conversations - Another feature I really love. Mails sent/received from a certain subject (say, you reply to a mail from someone else and 3 others reply to that) are saved as a conversation. That means they're stacked together in the inbox, when you click on a received mail from a 'conversation', you see the previous mails above it. Extremely nice, especially when mailing a lot of different people on a subject, all the information is right there when you create a new reply. 8. Size - It started with 1GB (when hotmail was still only offering 2 MB) and caused other providers to dramatically increase the amount of space they offered. While services like hotmail are cutting free features for their "plus!" version, Gmail always adds space. It's now somewhere around 2.7gb they offer I believe. Save it, and it's always there. 9. Great and efficient anti-spam filters, from previous mail providers I had more troubles with spam coming in inbox. Not with gmail. 10. Fast and efficient search system. As I saved all the mails from the previous years, a lot of data is in it. As suits the mail system of a search provider, I find everything I want right away. 11. E-mail forwarding - to send incoming mail to another e-mail address. Handy for using different e-mail addresses so you don't have to check up on them. Also nice if you're not sure to use gmail as you might switch to another mail provider. If you do switch, the mails will follow you. 12. Automatic reply. Off for vacation or changed e-mail ? You can enable an efficient automatic reply system set for certain days. 13. Other cool stuff, such as RSS headlines above your e-mail. Quite nifty, and got me into the "dictionary word of the day" thing. 14. You can use your gmail account with google history search. It saves your search history, in case you need to search things again (which happens VERY OFTEN for me) it shows which links were useful last time. A timesaver. 15. ... A small list of features I love in gmail Time to switch !

Einstein Quiz Can you solve this problem?
Alegis replied to doctor's topic in Science and Technology
I think the opposite, that using tools or logical methods is what makes humans intelligent and different from animals. Or that the ability to remember greater chunks of information isn't dependant on one's ability to logical reasoning. The 'quiz' would intention of logical reasoning would be dwarfed like this, and it would fall somewhere inbetween "memory" and "reasoning". Think it's better to test each with a seperate and more concise test -
Because it's a new feature and they're supposed to release a new version of windows, not a free vista upgrade tool Aero is more than "just a plug-in", integrated in entire vista. Damnit, have to focus on my studies. I know that getting partitions and OSes to work and play around can be quite distractful ^^ For those with the public version, are extensive bug reporting tools etc integrated? Or automatic feedback system you know of? First thing I'm going to do is disable UAC ...

Started to learn more about MySQL this year. There is GREAT documentation out there, I really don't see why learning it would be such a chore or troublesome experience. Really, dozens and dozens of great tutorials for different user levels.

Windows Problems "new Series"- Xp Home Edition Activation Issue
Alegis replied to XIII's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Wow, that's strange. Reinstalled and activated my windows plenty of times : |I reckon you used an illegal code then, and I'm afraid I can't help you with that. Or anyone else, according to Xisto code of conduct. -
Alright mate, you got your phpbb folder from phpbb.com Upload the files to your ftp folder public_html (if you want your forum on http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ , make a folder in public_html called forum and upload index.php and the other folders/files there) First of all, we'll need a database. Go to your cpanel, and then to 'MySQL Databases' Create a database and a user/password there. Remember these. Now, go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (in case you uploaded everything in a folder called forum orso in public_html, go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists//install/install.php ) And follow the instructions by filling in your server data. The version of PHP and MySQL can be seen on cpanel's main page. The database host should be localhost, and the database name should be the one you created, as well as the database username/password you made. If all is succesful, it will tell you to delete the contrib/install folders. After that, you should be able to browse around your forum and make changes. Try this out and please, ask more specific questions, if you want us to help you out. I have a lot of experience with installing phpBB, so I can provide you with direct and helpful answers if you ask the right questions. "IT DOESNT WORK" or "I CANT DO THIS" isn't a great lead for me, I can't write everything down and hope that it is clear enough.

Find a host with ads or something, that has the disk space you require and for example supports FTP uploading. You can use a website like http://www.freewebspace.net/ (You can use advanced hosting search, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ) And upload images and link to them. Unless you're posting pics on a site like digg.com bandwidth should be fine.

Of course it is not possible yet, it would have been in use already And not all great ideas immediately translate into possible. Like, yes it would be great to have a car run on water thanks to quantom mechanics and nanotechnology*first of all these intelligent nanobots would have to eliminate the 'bad breath bacteria'. However, who says they're bad? There are a crapload of bacteria in your mouth, good ones however, to eliminate dangers like when you put dirt in your mouth. Plus, these "mini robots" would also have to know how to regenerate body parts. How would they know what the correct form of your teeth is, so they ain't building fangs ?Seems like science fiction to me Not sure about nanotech either, except that you can't translate the brain of a human being to a mini 'nanobot'.*using 'difficult words' adds authenticity

Hurray, about time. Includes 10 dvds (of which atm I only need 4, but anyways). Will be putting a new partition on my main disk soon, people recommended some programs. Includes a driver dvd, as there has been great progress on that side ever since beta 01. I agree with you, vizskywalker. Once I find out vista is stable I'll be using it more and more and often and reporting bugs/feedback. Beta 02 is to wet public's appetite, if it were as instable as the BETA 01 august release they'd scare them instead of attracting However it is well known that its beta and not preview. I recommend looking for the vista version of your hardware drivers. Drivers, that's what it all matters about

Google Trends What the world is searching?
Alegis replied to Vyoma's topic in Websites and Web Designing
It is a pretty interesting site, not that I can really use it 'for business' though. I find the graphs a bit limiting in suplying data. If you search for example for "failure" it shows a bigger graph for norwegian which I find pretty strange. Or a very big graph for "St Albans, United Kingdom" when I check health. I guess I'm not entirely sure how this thing works and thus should be used to get valuable information from it. If you use this trend site as a big reference to what you should put on your website I'd be careful if I were you ; ) I find the bottle pretty weird for an 'L' One interesting feature of google search though is google history, although it doesn't record all the searches you do with the built-in search box of Firefox. -
Adobe Threatening Microsoft May strike a deal
Alegis replied to Alegis's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Announcement from Adobe ; http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ basically they refer to Microsoft's past of embracing open standards and extending them, rather breaking them. They fear Microsoft may abuse its position to 'ruin' PDF and promote XMS. Adobe would rather face competition from XMS then put PDF in the Redmon based company's hands. -
The 'destruction' on equal letters seems the same, but it could be like earthling suggested. With all those fonts out there (hundreds and thousands, really) browsing each of them is a no-go. Even when specifying a category it's a lot of work for example, http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=107&page=4 If I were in your shoes I'd contact the Site administrator

Panasonic To Launch Its First Blu-ray In September
Alegis replied to balend's topic in Science and Technology
Just google it. Oh look, here it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray The consumers who join the first generation bandwagon are doomed to lose. Definitely advisable to wait, and only get it if you can really use it (as in, you own a HD TV and want to own HD DVD/Blu-ray movies). Personally I'm leaning towards HD DVD because of the backwards compatibility, and clear name. Sony's scheme to screw the consumers by forcing them to empty their pockets for an extra chance of blu-ray becoming standard sickens me. -
http://www.flyingomelette.com/top50songs.html All of them oldies in there some may recognise The author of the page claims it's his top 50, of the ones he played etc. Features mP3 version, and usually .midi as well; and a picture of the game. My favourite game music would probably be Venom theme from Starfox, Zelda Main theme, or Star Wars soundtrack.

Better products may arrive, and Apple and Creative may sue each other to their heart's delight .. but the MP3 player market has a big "dumb zone". This "dumb zone" consists of all the users taking whatever looks nice, others have, is advertised all around etc. Apple played this brilliantly, and 'iPod' is everywhere. The final stage where the word 'mp3player' is replaced by 'Ipod' is achieved in many states. Even if products with better hardware or functionality arrive, I'm afraid they'll fail to shout louder than iPod. The dumb zone doesn't necessarily want slightly better audio quality, but a fashionable product that's easy to use. An example is of course the design, where form follows fashion (lack of extra buttons) and the product numbers. Just "iPod" and "iPod video". not RandomPlayer TS729 V1, because the target market doesn't care. iPods being updated (generation) several times in the past but it didn't change their name. User convenience. For my next MP3 player purchase (iPod still working after all those years, although hard drive does make some noise) I will consider many options and evaluate them, however the dumb zone user won't. Creative may win in products that may appeal more to the critical market, however Apple seems to be doing better and better in the bigger market.

Einstein Quiz Can you solve this problem?
Alegis replied to doctor's topic in Science and Technology
You always crave for more. And exercises for the logical reasoning is fun.In the end it's not that you know who has what pet or house, but how you got there. If out of fear for failure you attempt nothing, how will you achieve higher things . -
Adobe Threatening Microsoft May strike a deal
Alegis replied to Alegis's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Well that's the weird thing, they want PDF more widely used and that's why it's included in other packages. But tell MS to sell it as add-on and promote its other format instead? They want PDF to be a commonly used open format. Telling Microsoft how to sell their product could be seen as breaking antitrust, price fixing, as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_fixing PDF is good for sharing and printing as you'll get the same display on any machine, no messing with sizes, images or text formatting. I think I'm afraid I don't know why people think it's a good thing companies like Adobe and Symantec try to slow down Microsoft's progress or break the product. In the end the big losers are the clients. What's good about that ? -
You can still use MSN Messenger indeed, as already mentioned. You won't have the 'new mail' windows, but in case of gmail a little tool from google called gmail notifier is even better. You can also get the firefox extension for the latter .What you can do however, and what I did when I moved from hotmail to gmail a couple of years ago, is simply either mail all your contacts you still wish to keep in touch with, and delete your e-mail address. One knows then when they receive the mailer daemon message that it is not your current e-mail anymore. For msn, be sure to export your contact list (menu) and import it later. Too many people that either manually add or ask others to add them :(A.

Summary : Microsoft included a "save to PDF" and XMS (their format to 'rival' pdf) feature in the office 2007 beta, which has been made available to the public for quite some time now. While adobe does sell their own product to create PDFs (around 240$ I believe), this feature has been included in Apple software, OpenOffice.org and some others for quite some time. Yet when Microsoft, their so-called business partner, jumped on the bandwagon Adobe threatened to counter with legal action. They wanted Microsoft to remove the feature from the retail version and offer it as a purchasable add-on; else they'd claim they're violating the antitrust laws and offering their product for free. In the latest episode of this startling series, Microsoft attempts to soothen adobe's wrath by offering a deal. Microsoft to Adobe: Let's Make a Deal http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Another good read is the following article, about Adobe's possible motives. Why Adobe and Microsoft Hit Delete on PDF Deal http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

JPG, PNG, BMP.. And Now WMP (Windows Media Photo)
Alegis replied to dhanesh1405241511's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Right, because introducing a new image format with very useful application would be a plot to conquer the world! Oh my gosh my potatoes in my garden now obey almighty Microsoft. If only the communists knew of this method. On a more serious note, I think it's good news. It seems like a better format than .JPG for sure (I don't like the loss of data at all, yet size reduction is inevitable necessity in many cases). Definitely hope it will be supported on *all* machines so I can start using it right away. -
Messenger vs. Google Talk What do you use?
Alegis replied to fcfosters's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I don't really have many contacts using gmail, even if all would use it I wonder about its effectiveness.Especially over here, highschool, MSN is ever so dominant as well as stupid hotmail addresses (as in random_stupid_word9029@hotmail.com). it's tough to make an alternative for such programs where everyone needs to switch, as not everyone is as lenient or willing to change for minor feature changes. I like MSN. -
Multiple Domains For Home Server
Alegis replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Ehm, you just write the address like that on the correct page ? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ if it does not accept extra foldernames after the domain extension, try masking that adress with a no-ip.com name. Examples: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://www.noip.com/. Or get one at no-ip.com or another url forwarding service instead if cjb does not support "specific" directories ...
