  1. You're welcome. Like sometimes in real life, simply asking the question allowed you to get the problem solved, with help of a lucky strike. Let's be happy and celebrate this with you.
  2. I'm not familiar wih Suse. With Mandrake, at installation time, you choose what kind of install you wish. I usually install "server" environment because it has a lot of usuful things. But there is also an option "workstation only". I'm pretty sure Suze has the same thing, have a careful look during install, and simply install client things. Remember that you will probably need minimum telecoms (at least telnet an samba I guess, and I would also add NFS).RegardsYordan
  3. By the way, I'm also surprised to see MS publishing this kind of results. I would expect this info to be "strictly for internal use" in the "for future improvement" department.
  4. Too late, pat23 just bought his new drive.By the way, I had exactly the same problem last year, my DVD device stopped reading DVD's, I bought a new one and everything works fine now. The only real answer would have been to put the faulty drive in another computer : if a drive works bad on two comuputes, it's probably due to a drive failure. And if a new drive works in pat23's computer, this means the Windows OS was not faulty.
  5. Don't you think it's "linux in ascii terminal mode" and not "x-windows or KDE Linux"? Pure Linux should be compared to old ms-dos mode, and maybe ms-dos would win...
  6. PowerQuest Drive Images works fine too. You do a copy somewhere on a hard disk or on a DVD-ROM. Then, in case of system crash you install back your system from this backup. usually it lasts five to ten minutes.Of course, you should backup a correctly working system...RegardsYordan
  7. (gosh, now we have the quote/quote encapsulating automatically performed! How nice ! My question is : was this worth it ? Are your very performing at CS now ? Same level as your classfriends ?
  8. I would really like to have 1 gig memory. I have 256 Megs, and I am continuously swapping. Unfortunately I cannot open the box of my PC yet, else no hardware guarantee any more. So I will wait a little bit.
  9. I also have problems with my databases. I read the quoted mail (I received it) but this mails says "please wait a little bit", the mail does not say that some of the things will be repaired and the other ones not.So, I am as Ruben, I simply would like to know how to repair the things.
  10. I would also like to make a suggestion.Write down a generic page, saying something like "I am currintly working hard, this page will be soon available", and put it on any new menu item you are creating. this is more friendly than all the "page not found" errors I received on most of your menu items.
  11. Maybe we should open a new post on that subject : why do you like Linux ?Personnally, I am conviced that a lot of professional people need a multi-task, multi-user system, for instance for database usage.Unix is a real multi-task, multi-user operating system. Linux a free version of Linux, so it's comfortable to use it home. And if you like it home, you will want to implement it at your office.
  12. seems that tikemedia forgot how to come back to his post, and is unable to read our replies!
  13. Really nice ! I never heard that way of naming GWBASIC. Of course, I played with Q-basic and GW-basic as ersatz for fortan (cause at those time fortran was hardly available for personal computers).By the way, did you know about Lisp ? This school of artificial intelligence, where the main program was able of upgrading itself.
  14. I think I won ! I wrote my first program 30 years ago. The language was named ALGOL, like ALGOrythmic Langague, was mainly a university language for learning purposes. Then, I worked in a Physics Research Lab, and we wrote essentially Fortran programs. Do some of you remember Fortran ? And I still work with fortran when correcting some of my customer's programs...RegardsYordan
  15. I suppose that your new computer has an Ethernet connector ? and that your old computer has an Ethernet adapter too ? Then, you simply need an Ethernet cross cable, give a fixed IP Ethernet address to each box, and create a shared folder on the old computer, and use the mouse on the new computer, mount the shared folder and copy all the files from the shared folder to the new computer hard disk.No dismounting, only a one-meter cable available in most supermarkets ! If you need more help for configuring this Ethernet cable and fixed IP things, tell it here, and we will help you more. Regards Yordan
  16. I would say that this means that mysql has not been correctly installed.I suggest uninstall it properly, and then re-install it again. Regards Yordan
  17. Nope, it's part of your router settings. You have to ask your router to map a given service, on the router fixed address, to be seen as a service on your computer. So, it's an advanced setting on your router, not on your computer.By the way, you also have to know the fixed address of your router, this is the address you have to give people which want to connect. Regards Yordan
  18. My phpbb on astahast is in mysql, so I vote for mysql cause it's the only one I used.At work I use Oracle and Informix, home I use dbase 3, unfortunately none of these has to be voted for on the present post.RegardsYordan
  19. That's very easy. tikomedia,I will explain for Mandrake Linux because I like this distro, but most of what I will tell you will work the same way with other distros. Simply, it's fast and easy with Mandrake.OK, let's suppose everything is fine on your PC. Else you will have to correct things to make the starting point fine.Microsoft Windows must be installed first. And then, you need some free space (available, not formatted) on your hard disk. So, let's suppose that Microsoft Windows is already installed, and that there is some free space on your hard disk, or let's suppose that you have a second disk with nothing on it.If this is not the case, you will have to manage this. One way (the hard way) is to re-install Microsoft Windows in advanced install mode, asking Microsoft to take only a fraction of the hard disk (ten gig on a 60 Gig disk is reasonable). Then, while your Microsoft windows is perfectly working, you insert the Mandrake first CD, and shutdown your pc.Then, you power on your PC while the first Mandrake CD is inserted, you will be asked if you want to install Linux (say Yes). Then answer all the questions, most of the default answers are the correct ones. When arriving at the disk space part, say that you want to "give the rest of the free space to Linux".And that's all. At the end of the install, the system will reboot. And at each reboot it will ask you if you want to boot on Windows or on Linux. The default will be Linux, but this will be easy to change to Windows as default (if you prefer booting standardly to windows or having to press the "down" key to higlight Linux when you want to boot with Linux). And that's all, folks!Of course, you can do smarter things. What I do is . I first install Windows.. Then i create the windows partitions D:, E: and F: (for Data, for Entertainement Games and for Films) as FAT32 Microsoft Windows partitions.. And I leave ten gig free on my disk, for Linux. And when I install Linux and boot under Linux, I see the date created under Windows as Linux filesystems named /mnt/Windows1, /mnt/windows2, /mnt/windows3. Thas is performed automatically by le Mandrake installation script. The mp3 written by Microsft Windows are read in the /mnt/windows3/mp3 directory. And what I write under Linux in /mnt/windows2/transferfiles is seen by Midrosoft Windows in the disk D: in the directory named \transferfiles.Simply magic, isn't it ? Linux forever.Hope this helpedYordan
  20. Does this script work at Xisto too ? Or do you need to have console access in order to fire it ?
  21. I agree with that, except one small detail. A also used Linux on an old computer (a 100 MHz pentium with only 1 gig disk). It was slow but usable. However, be careful with the graphic adapter. Most of recent Linux distros use a version of X-Windows which supposes that you have a "normal" graphic adapter, with at leat 32 or 64 Megs memory. If your graphic adapter is really old, maybe you will have to also use an old version of Linux. Regards Yordan
