Now that I've tried the release on someone else's computer, (it was only the Creative Suite compendium), I found things i like and things i dislike. I was impressed with the layout and general functionality of Photoshop, and the way everything is closer at hand in both photoshop and dreamweaver. On the Mac with a dual core Intel in Boot Camp it runs much faster than on a parallel windows xp pro PC. Still, not having video and photo editing as my sole purpose in life, i still do not feel the urge to pay through the nose for a Mac of my own. Neways, I dislike how long it took to install. Everything was in one single file, and every time you wanted to install or change installed components it had to extract the whole thing. Which took about 5 minutes, plus another 10 minutes to install the shared components, which are mandatory. It got a bit infuriating after the Illustrator part of the installation failed 3 times in a row, and to reinstall that single component i spent the better part of an hour waiting for it to do its shared components thing. Still, after a little while I'm sure the pros will outweigh the cons and i'll be itching to switch it on my own machine, but for now I'm fine with the CS2 suite.

Javascript Show / Hide Functions need some fine-tuning
Grafitti replied to Grafitti's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Thank you! Problem solved! -
Searching before posting my topic, i found this very helpful post. Javascript show + hide However, I'm still muddling around trying to fine tune it, and since i'm no good at coding, I'd appreciate any help. Using that example, how do I get the div text to be hidden on loading, rather than showing it all at page load. Also, is there a way to have the text change when clicked? so that for example, it would say "expand" when it's the small amount of text, and "collapse" when it's the full text?

Honouring The Dead VA Tech Massacre

No, I totally agree with both of you there. I'm just bringing up the other side, where hypothetically speaking, if we could go back and change the past, that treating him differently could have changed things. He needed psychiatric care, that's obvious, but perhaps it was a combination of little things like those that pushed him a little further each time until he went off the edge. Then again, there's no way to know what could have happened, and maybe it wouldn't have made a difference to him. I think it would have been worth a shot. -

In no way do I support his actions, but see this mentality I described above as contributing to this calamity. -

That is such a typical American comment though. This isn't attacking you personally, I'm now speaking generally of the American public. You fear what is different and what you don't understand. If the person is Asian, if he's black, or brown, or Arab, or Muslim, the first thoughts you think of him are negative. And if he doesn't live up to those expectations, you dismiss it as an exception, and if he does, you see it as confirming your suspicions. But what about the guy who just threatened a copycat killing spree, that would make this one look mild? Are you now going to be afraid of all whites as well? Of course not. Why does a person's race or color of their skin have to determine your attitude towards them? -
Who Is Your Favourite Free Host? whats your fav free host?
Grafitti replied to teartrack_sos's topic in General Discussion
I don't think the message to maintain 10 or more hosting credits is threatening. really, in half an hour you can easily make more than 10 credits, and half an hour a week is hardly feeding computer addiction. Plus don't you find it nice that the first thing you see is your credits so you know how much time left you have? what if you were going on vacation for a couple weeks, but weren't sure how many credits you had, and came back to find your site suspended. I look at the freewebhosts site reviews, and i'm quite surprised at the number of bad reviews Xisto has. I promptly wrote a review as well, and gave it a big 10, but it's sad to see the rating it has. Looking over the posts though, it seems the negative ones are either very old, which was in Xisto's early days, or most recently they're people who have been banned for spamming and are bitter they didn't get their hosting accounts. I'd like to recommend that if you haven't yet rated Xisto there, that you do so, and bring up the ranking a bit. -
Is your 6600 a GT? because if so, you should be able to sell it for a decent secondhand price. The 7900 seems good, but I think the MSI 8600 GTS is also an attractive option. I have a 7900GS MSI card, and it's got the features for overclocking. though i can't afford to do it here first because i don't know much about it, and second because with the voltage fluctuations it already runs on a hairline. But waiting for the 8900 isn't going to be much help if you're looking at the cheaper options. If you plug a new card in, your current drivers should probably detect it, but you might need to upgrade/ install the fresh drivers that came with the card, to get all the features available.

Ah. So then it seems that I'm outvoted... I guess I'm all right with that, but I'll still wait to be convinced by an accredited 3rd party who can verify that Skype is really secure. I guess PGP has gone through that, and that I know has proven almost unbreakable. I do think they've done a great job on it though, and I concede that they're the ones who have been behind this massive growth in VoIP technology, which in turn makes it easier and more affordable for more people.
-
I'm just curious as to how secure Skype really is, because it's the latest buzz going around, to have Skype and how it's so much more secure than other chat/VOIP clients. How much of this is fact, and what is hyperbole? From googling it, and reading what i could find, it seems that it has a relatively robust encryption scheme, but that it's a blind area as it's proprietary software and hasn't been looked over by third parties for holes. All we have is the company's claims. I'm of the opinion that it really isn't much safer than yahoo or msn messenger, and that if you assume it's all secure you're more apt to leave things unencrypted, and when or if a breach is made, you'll encounter more of a loss.

Yes, when the internet is really slow i have a hard time signing in. even if it finally loads the login page, it tries to load the page and if there isn't a decent even dialup connection, the it just goes in circles, if that much. But sooner or later it pops up the error message and asks you if you want to check it in basic html, and usually that works eventually... though it can still take a while. either that, or your ISP messed something up. it happens occasionally here, but they usually get it sorted out in a few hours.

I never knew that about the UPS and regulator working against each other. I've asked electricians and they had no idea why. thanks. So since I run an office from my home, and there's a laser printer and a photocopy machine in addition to 4 computers, should I run separate wiring for the copy machine and possibly the laser printer? Because those are connected to the UPS as well, and every time i push the copy button the regulator fluctuates. And why would it do that? is it because the machine is demanding more power than is available in the wires? Because after a few copies, the computer power supply drops and it restarts. I know that having dual hard disks drains more power, but having had so many hard disks fail here because of power surges, I've gotten to having a redundant hard disk in each computer that i clone the 1st drive on to every week. I would do Raid, but these motherboards don't support it and not worth the extra hassle for software raid.

I have a 2.8 Dual core machine with a 17 inch monitor, 2 hard drives, a dvd burner, and a 350w power supply. I have an 800w rated UPS, which according to the paper is supposed to give me around 8 minutes of power during a blackout. This is more of an issue than for most people, as here we have an average of 8 power cuts a day during the 8 or 9 months of summer weather. The problem is that my UPS doesn't really help any, because in a power cut it will go off as well for a second, and then it comes back to life, but in that second my computer has gone off, and even though it reboots, i've lost data. The same thing because i have a voltage regulator which fluctuates constantly, but i thought the point of a regulator was to ensure a clean constant flow of power. mine works the opposite way. it dips so low that the computer/UPS shuts off, even if the power hasn't actually gone off. and the electrician says it's normal, but i'm not convinced. So:1). How powerful a UPS do I need for my computer specs, to where i get a good supply of power for at least 10 minutes.2). Is it normal for a UPS to go down for that second along with the house power?3). What's wrong with my voltage regulator?and a related question: The computer shop told me I would void the warranty on my wireless router if i plugged it into a circuit protected by a regulator or a UPS, that the adapter already functioned as a regulator, and that i would short it out by plugging it into one of those. True or False?Any advice is much appreciated.

The French Paradox Or, how to eat well to stay well
Grafitti replied to vbritton's topic in General Discussion
That was a good post. agree that in general Europeans are more concerned about eating healthy than lots of other countries. of course there's a growing problem with obesity, but it's minute compared to the states. Even the fruit juice though can be misleading. Nestle here sells orange juice that is actually (or so we hope) 100% juice. but then they print "100% pure" on their grape juice, "100% clear" on their apple juice, and "100% fresh" on the pineapple juice. And those things actually contain a lot of added sugar. I guess it's not as bad as Ribena though. Wasn't it just in the news last week that two schoolgirls in NZ proved Ribena didn't contain nearly as much vitamin c, and in fact contained more sugar than coke. The Consumer Association there successfully sued them for misleading claims. So even defensive shopping won't work unless you've verified it through other sources. And parents need to also be proactive in helping their children appreciate healthier eating habits. What's his name, that celebrity chef in London, who's been trying to change school lunch menus to consist of healthy nutritious food, and parents still pass burgers to their kids or sell them through the bars. -
I think the only time that not running an AV on your (especially Windows) system would be alright is if it were in no way connected to the internet, and you didn't use flash drives or CDs/DVDs with anything on them that wasn't checked first on a computer with an AV. If you're totally isolated then it could work, but almost no one is in today's world. So it's suicide. And just relying on one thing isn't going to help either if something determined gets to work. A multilayered defense exponentially increases your protection.

Google's Annual April Fools Pranks
Grafitti replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I had just been reminded that it was April Fools Day before i got online, so i was in a skeptical frame of mind. The Gpaper thing though, I almost fell for it. But I figured I might as well get some fun out of it, so printed it out and posted it on the bulletin board, and forwarded it to all my coworkers. They got so excited about it, i still haven't told them it was a prank. -
I use Media Player for most of my installations, simply because I can't afford to spend half an hour answering questions form each person as to how winamp works, where the play button is, how come i can't make a playlist in VLC, etc. So for them, that's the best option. For myself, I used to use VLC as my default video player and winamp as my audio player, but I found that the KMPlayer acts exactly like winamp, looks the same with the proper skin (if you're familiar with Winamp) plays more than VLC, and supports playlists, plus a bunch of filters and tweaking. Also i had trouble sometimes with VLC playing wmv files, it would skip and pixelate quite badly. KMP has no such problems, and is freeware.

It's not necessarily illegal if you own the dvd. Isn't that part of fair use, that you buy a product and you're entitled to do what you like with it. There's that video on youtube of the guy shredding a brand new Vista dvd, you can't tell him it's illegal, because he paid for it fair and square. If we b*tch at Microsoft for making licensing so difficult, and you're only allowed to activate Vista on 3 machines, why would we then say it's wrong to own a Mac, and use that dvd to install it on a second computer that you also own?
-
It'll take a while before everything is ported to Vista. I'm sure there are quite a few programs that don't support it yet, but the one I've found so far is PGP, which doesn't work unless you have the beta version, but that's only a month long trial version. Hopefully by the end of this year we'll see the first service pack for vista, and at least 90% of all appz ported over.

I've used Premiere to do slow motion, but you can only slow it down so much before you start seeing individual frame passes. Like regular video is shot at 25 or 30 fps, and in something like 300 they shot the slow motion sequences on a 300 fps camera. Definitely not something in the average person's budget.

Yes, welcome to Xisto! But in addition to longer more quality posts, try browsing the forum for already-posted topics that you either have an interest in, or solutions to. Replying is a lot easier than starting a new topic, and there's no shortage of threads to choose from. Otherwise you start posting new threads that have already been posted countless times ... it's what most of the new people do. You'll find that you can actually make longer posts in someone else's topic, rather than a couple lines per new post.

I think it's not overkill. For users that are into graphics and video processing, the extra cycles do help a lot. Same thing for hardcore gamers. For the average PC user, even if they only use office and internet explorer, it still makes sense. Because the ones who swap PCs every year are either professionals who need to, or those who simply have money to burn. For the average PC user who plans on keeping his computer as long as possible, you'd want to go for the best you can afford, so that even if a pentium 2, for example, can run all regular programs today, maybe in 5 years the minimum specs will be different, and by buying a higher end model today, you're saving time and money in the long run. Plus, even for simple things like Office, a new one is simply faster. A P2 may be capable of running it, but pitting it against a P4? There are big differences.

Your motherboard will support Vista Ultimate. It's the graphics card embedded that won't support it. If you're going to be buying a separate graphics card, then that motherboard is fine. But if you haven't bought it yet, why not go for the 946? that has the new GPU that natively supports Ultimate, and doesn't cost much more.

It's hard to believe that there could be worse situations. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not there. However, to answer Atomic, I pasted that column as a representation of the average PC repair guy's level of skill. They know their one path, which is reformatting, but if you want something else they're stumped. Take for example I wanted to set up one of my computers as a server, so i got Windows 2003 Server with ISA server 2006, and I couldn't find anyone willing to install and set it up for me. They were stuck on Windows 2000 and ISA 2000. When I went ahead and installed Server 2003 on my computer anyways, and then finally convinced one shop that deals in networking to come and configure it for me, the guy came and said he would take care of it. I left the room and came back an hour later, and he had reformatted and installed server 2000. On top of that he wanted to charge me extra for the reinstallation. That was the last straw for me.

Should We Delete The Gaming Forums? A poll on the games forum
Grafitti replied to Markymark2's topic in Computer Gaming
I vote for it to stay, even though i rarely post there, i try to post worthwhile comments. I don't mind if it's relegated to a "no-credits" zone, but i'd like it to stay.
