Receive And Send Mails From Your Desktop

only problem with hotpop is that unless you have a paid account, you're limited to a certain number of messages per day, plus an attachment size limit of 500Kb. still, i have one, and it's useful for all my junk mail. -
Problems Using Windows On Sata Hard Drive
Grafitti replied to WeaponX's topic in Websites and Web Designing
XP should recognize a USB external cdrom or floppy. Maybe something in the BIOS? as i've booted and installed drivers though an external device. -
I just set my computer to scan overnight. You must sleep at some point during a 24 hour period, right? I've got nearly a terabyte of storage, but it only takes 2 or 3 hours to scan, and i set it to start when i go to bed.

What Is The Best Brand Of Harddisk? Who has longer life?
Grafitti replied to bryandel's topic in Hardware Workshop
I use Seagate as much as possible, mainly because they come with a 5 year warranty, whereas Maxtor and WD come with 2 and 3 years respectively. I've had 1 Seagate, 4 WDs and 2 Maxtors fail on me over a period of 4 years. One reason is the horrible power surges and blackouts here. So with only 1 failed Seagate, i would say it's more durable. (only 2 Maxtors because i stopped buying them). -
How To Login To An Expired Windows Xp System

A large number of genuine users have their copy flagged as pirated. And Microsoft is NOT always helpful in getting you activated properly. -
I thought i'd post this here, because it didn't seem to fit anywhere else, and for me, driving is a sport. I've got a 1991 Corolla, made in Japan, it's been a decent car so far. Then i have a 2006 Corolla, "made in Japan" but assembled in Pakistan, and there are obvious quality differences. That aside, my goal when driving is to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, and especially in this country, it entails a bit of burnouts, hard corners, hard accelerations, harder braking. The new Corolla handles fine, or as well as can be expected from a stock car with stock everything. They're both front wheel drive, and tend to oversteer when pushed to the limit. But the old one lately has been handling strangely. At moderate to relatively high speeds, it oversteers. Hard cornering under acceleration also oversteers. But if i'm going at a very high speed (which is anything over 100 km/h for that car) and i take an off ramp from the highway (one of those ribbon 360 degree bends), with braking or without braking, the car will understeer and if not corrected it goes into a tailspin. Only during the last month or two has it started understeering, so what could be causing it?

I had been running NOD32 for a long time. But when this virus came out, (creates a file called RavmonE.exe) NOD32 just wouldn't catch it. it spread over flash disks and pgp disks, and pretty soon every computer in the house was infected. So when i upgraded my computer, i thought i'd try Kaspersky. It really is good, and it does catch everything, but everything slowed to a crawl with that running. I went for the complete suite of protection options, not just the antivirus, so maybe that had something to do with it, but still it was annoying, because i have a dualcore 2.8 machine now, and it was running at the same speed as my P3 laptop. And so I had this frustratingly slow machine, that in addition would always pop up warnings for everything. It was the anti-hacker, and it had either almost total access, and the next level of protection was learning mode. but even with that, every time i would open any program it would make me go through at least 3 different warnings, and sometimes 5 or more. So while it was great for security, it was useless because i got so frustrated i ended up turning it off. The same thing people complain about Vista for. So i gave up on KAV, and went back to NOD32, which at least lets me run my system as it's supposed to, and so far has only failed me in that one virus.

Even if it was an OEM install, I don't think it's fair that you wouldn't be able to get back the key if something happened. Without mentioning specific examples, there are program that let you view your office key, or you could just go through the registry if you know where to look. SO i imagine you have your own computer, or another one, with Office XP as well. Just use the same key.

Windows Vista Shredded !
Grafitti replied to dhanesh1405241511's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I think it's a publicity stunt, and I have not had problems installing Vista on quite a few machines. only a relatively old one took a few trial and errors before it worked, but even that was up and running, no need to install extra drivers, no missing files. Aside from the price, I'm relatively happy with it, and it's definitely an improvement over XP. -
I believe Ad-aware doesn't count as an antivirus, it's antispyware, and if that's all you have, you're missing a key component of your defense system. Though Zonealarm does have an antivirus as well, i don't know if it's in the free version or not. Zonealarm comes about as good as a firewall gets, and is pretty tough, but in itself it's not a replacement for an antivirus.

I think the main difference is that in MCE you get the media center. sounds stupid, but i think that's it. It's very useful if you watch a lot of videos, stuff on your tv through the laptop. you know, with the remote control and all that. But if you wouldn't use it, and Pro can be gotten cheaper, why not stick with that. I'm unsure of the pricing difference, but unless you configure and order online, most laptops not in the business range are preloaded with MCE.
-
Concur with Media Center, that's a better option. However, while you don't want to get Vista right now, in 6 months or so, it's going to start looking a lot more attractive. I believe that if you get Media Center now, you can upgrade to Vista later for a nominal fee. I'm not talking about the regular upgrade from XP to Vista. I read this somewhere, sorry i don't remember where, that laptop dealers would start offering heavily discounted (or free) upgrades to Vista for laptops that can support it and are bought beginning 2007. would be something to look into.

Which Systems Should I Go For? comparing hardware
Grafitti replied to Grafitti's topic in Hardware Workshop
It's not authentic shop purchases i'm worried about. I would go for MAD, except as i said above, the after-service sucks. AMD has a market penetration here of about 10%, and Intel has 90%. Even with that huge share, it took them 2 months to replace my warrantied Intel 845 motherboard. Now if i get AMD and they go bad, am i supposed to wait 6 months before they replace it? That's sort of the problem here. -
Messed Up My Boot.ini File With Vista... How can i fix it?
Grafitti replied to Grafitti's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Vista advisor gives my computer a 4.6 rating, so it's not that. I'm using the RTM, but the logon is fine. it's my xp that went slow after uninstalling vista incorrectly. -
Poseidon Adventure more of a technical question...
Grafitti replied to Grafitti's topic in General Discussion
Yes, so since the hull was full of air, it should have remained afloat. Also even if the main hall windows broke, and the water had rushed in, the air needed somewhere to escape to. it could have compressed somewhat, but then it would have reached neutral buoyancy, and the water would have stopped rising until the air found some way of escaping through the hull of the ship. Now we see that in the last few minutes, where the turbines are spinning the wrong way because the air is escaping through them, etc. but through all the rest of the movie, those hatch doors were closed, and so the air would have been trapped. In essence, i think the water might have filled the main hull, but until a really major hole was knocked in the hull, allowing the massive amount of air trapped to escape in one go, the ship would have stayed afloat for days, definitely until rescue crews arrived, in which case i think they would have sent divers from underneath to avoid the trapped air escaping through a hole they'd made. The Titanic sank so fast because the hull was ripped open and water filled it from below, and the top of the ship was full of those glass doors and windows and all manner of vents, so the air would have had a much easier time getting out. Even so, it took the ship approximately 2 hours, 40 minutes to sink. -
Lenovo, IBM, I suppose now they're the same thing. Supposed to be durable, workhorses, and a bit on the pricey side. Then you have to like the looks. It's a love it or hate it deal.

Messed Up My Boot.ini File With Vista... How can i fix it?
Grafitti replied to Grafitti's topic in Websites and Web Designing
All those files that were causing trouble from the leftover of Vista still had the Vista fileprotection on them, so i wasn't able to take ownership and delete them in XP. I ended up booting with Winternals, deleted the Vista files, then repaired my system files, and everything booted properly after that. -
Which Systems Should I Go For? comparing hardware

Yes, definitely if i were in western europe or the states, AMD would be my processor of choice, except for a couple stations maybe where the Intel dualcore whips AMD in video rendering. -
Help With Ram not all memory being used
Grafitti replied to bluefish1405241537's topic in Hardware Workshop
Could it also be that your new chip actually IS 256 MB, but your computer won't show it as more than 128? Have you taken the chip down to a service center and asked them to test it? -
I used to be adamant about that as well. Never Dells, only HP, Acer and such. Then I had an HP dv4000 that had a faulty motherboard upon delivery... 16 months to get it sorted out with HP. By the time i got it working it was already time to upgrade. Then i bought an Acer 6100WLMi. Motherboard started showing problems after 3 weeks, and almost 3 months later i'm still waiting for acer to get it replaced (AMD model and non-existent here). My boss bought a Dell 6400 and a year later hasn't had problems with it. I don't particularly like Dells, but my experiences have eroded my support for my previous favorite brands. Though, if i had the money, a desktop replacement machine from Alienware, Twinhead, Eurocom, or Fujitsu would do quite nicely.

Windows XP Exploit - Please Help.
Grafitti replied to uapconsole's topic in Security issues & Exploits
ZoneAlarm's new firewall is pretty tough on rules. I would suggest you try that. When it's running, select "Lock all internet activity" and then see if the lights on the modem still blink. If they do, then that's just the modem checking in, possibly rejecting pings, whatever. then again, any decent firewall should have that option, so probably whatever you're running has it too.For the paranoid, I haven't found anything yet that beats Kaspersky. I don't use it because it slows down the computer somewhat in its realtime scanning mode, but i don't know how much more secure you can get than that. -
Here only Acer and Dell have non-glossy screens available, with possibly a few from HP in the business line, which i don't particularly like. Sorry about the country mixup. I suppose it's as bad as mistaking an American for a Russian during the cold war?
-
I suppose Dell has its share of problems. But i have also had bad experiences with several HP models, and a couple Toshibas as well. Alienware i like, but i don't know what the chances of getting one in Holland are.
