  1. So i was downloading ubuntu overnight through a torrent, because the torrent will automatically restart on reboot, in event of power cuts. I found though that with my connection (64kb/s uplink/512kb/s downlink) i can realistically hit 75kb/s as a maximum download. So if the torrent is well seeded, it will generally download at @ 60. And if I'm using Download Accelerator Plus it will download at a slightly higher speed, about 65. But what happens if I try to run both programs is, for some reason uTorrent will be downloading at 15 or 20, uploading at 7 or 8, and will still hog an overhead of 40-45. So my DAP can only download at 20 if the torrent is downloading, even if the torrent isn't downloading fast. As soon as i close uTorrent, DAP spikes back to 65kb/s. So when I have a bunch of files queued up in DAP and i want to download from the torrent as well, i've got to first close uTorrent, then start DAP on a few files, and then open uTorrent again. If say I have 4 files downloading at once in DAP, those files will download at about 6 kb/s each once i open uTorrent again, but once those are done, DAP can't grab back the bandwidth for the next files, and they time out. I've then got to pause uTorrent, restart the DAP file downloads, and then start uTorrent again. Why is this? I've already checked for spyware, monitored the bandwidth going out of the computer -- nothing unusual -- so why is uTorrent taking this major share of my bandwidth?
  2. Check my initial post, where quoted from Adobe's website is the list of changes
  3. How I wish my experience was like that. With an average of 5 or 10 complete power cuts per day, and constant voltage fluctuations (anywhere between 10 and 440), it's no wonder then that I've had worse experiences with generics. I do have to say though, that the Asus one on my personal computer has gone through it all for over a year now, and never has given me any problems. Keeps right on going till the power totally cuts out, and has a 1 second charge for the flash power cuts.
  4. It's something i've also experienced with firefox, but not only on pre-2.0 releases. even that latest ones do it sometimes. Especially when the connection isn't so great it garbles up the headers, mainly on php-based pages. I haven't seen it do anything with simple html pages yet, but even sometimes it does it with google when i'm searching, and yes, mostly for images.
  5. I've had similar problems with an Acer Aspire 5116 I bought. It had motherboard failure about 3 months into using it. Certain components on the motherboard just stopped working, which prevented Windows XP from booting (but not Vista, strangely enough), intermittent startup failure, and hibernation problems.I wouldn't advise buying any new parts for it yet, as if it won't start up with the charger by itself right away, but does so later on, that sounds like internal hardware problems. Why would you be looking for an excuse to purchase a new battery, if you've only had this one for a year? unless you've been using it really hard, it should still be alright for a while longer. Plus Acer's standard warranty coverage is 1 year, extendable to 3 years. you should still have some sort of coverage. Unless the shop you had it repaired at isn't an authorized Acer dealer. In that old Acer i had, i had the hard drive (5400rpm) upgraded to a 7200rpm one, and because it wasn't done at an Acer authorized partner, they voided my warranty.Definitely i would bring it down to the shop, have them swap out the battery and see if it really is that, or the adapter, and if not, then you've narrowed your problem down to something expensive to repair. If it does turn out to be the battery or charger at fault, thank your lucky stars.
  6. By dirty power, I mean power that is constantly fluctuating, never stable at 220V, and switches without warning between 1, 2 or 3 phases. It's a major problem here, and with the generic power supplies I use in most of our computers, it fries them up. I'd say that of 20 computers, in a year i go through probably about 15 power supplies. Though they're cheap to repair and cheap to buy, and the price difference doesn't warrant getting branded ones. It might be different there, though, if generic PSUs you can buy deliver what the sticker on the outside says it's supposed to. The ones here if they have a sticker rating of 350w, deliver a max of 230w, and mostly 180w.
  7. I would think not. You didn't specify what 6600 series card you have. especially if it's a GT, i would upgrade the power supply if you're going to be doing anything using lots of GPU power. It also depends if your power supply is branded, or if it's one of those generics, which generally deliver lower power ratings. I had a generic 400w in my comp, and i used to have a 6600GT, which after a couple hours of NFS actually caught fire due to inadequate power. Now i run a 7600 GTS with a 450w ASUS supply, and never experienced problems again.edit: then again, if you don't have dirty power coming into your house, maybe it's not a problem to have a 300w supply.
  8. It is actually a problem with some cheaper cases, that they don't have any airflow intake in the front. Then no matter what the size, a front fan is useless. I had one of those cases that came with my computer, and i had to go out and pick up another case that had proper ventilation, as there was no airflow in the computer.
  9. It already is a full version. The beta period ended a while back. I like WMP11, way better than 9 or 10. WMP7 is good for real and quicktime alternative, but WMP11 overall still takes the cake. Compared to winamp, it's not as good for mp3s and audio, but winamp truly sucks at video playback, a plus point of WMP. --though getting the codecs can sometimes be a real pain. I actually use TheKMPlayer for video playback. all the functions and more of WMP, plus built-in support for almost every codec, and it also plays flv files. Best of all, it's freeware.
  10. Nothing for me still equals Photoshop, especially CS3. I love the 3D aspect editing available in it.

    Best Freeware

I'd add ACDSee Pro 2.0 Beta to the list, though it's not entirely freeware, but will be so until September. It's very good and a big improvement over Version 9, even though they just released that recently.
  12. Most likely it's not a file crucial to running windows. If the virus vault doesn't give you the option to heal the file, it's pretty much certain it's a "pure" virus, and not an infected system file. Also if it's in the virus vault it's being restricted from interacting with the system, so if it were to be a needed file your system should already not be starting up. I would go ahead and delete it, and if for some reason it won't start after that, then you can simply repair the installation. though if that were to occur i would move my important stuff off the c drive, assuming that's your partition windows is installed on, and reformatting the partition. it can be less hassle alot of the time to reinstall rather than repair, especially if the virus has a high sophistication level and getting rid of it means you'll have a limping system recovering from the effects. Also be sure to disable system restore, and then rebooting in safe mode and running a complete virus scan. Otherwise you delete the virus, but the next time you restart the computer, it just reinstalls itself from the restore files.
  13. Quite the laugh... any chance of something like that about Pakistan? Indian stuff is great, but useless here, even though they share so many similarities, such as originally being the same country. But everything down to the spelling and usage of english is the same. Even reading the government's papers sometimes, it's hard to keep a straight face.
  14. yes but then on that board it would have to be a software raid array, and i prefer hardware ones. I know at least in most cases it doesn't require you to format your drive to install windows. either do what wutske said or just repair the install. i opt for the latter because it doesn't require any extra time on my part. i just pop the cd in, set it to repair and come back when it's finished.
  15. Makes sense to get Adobe to refund your rightful property. Just i thought that you might as well get your money's worth during the month or so that it'll take them to replace that cd.
  16. Yes, thank you. I usually do follow similar rules, but got lax there. Stuff you only want to forget once.
  17. https://www.adobe.com/ It seems you can, as long as you have an adobe account. or if you don't have one, create one.
  18. Yes, i did have the motherboard changed. See, originally I bought it with an Intel 845 motherboard, because we were doing a bulk buy and intel was the only model the supplier would give us. But a couple years later, the warranty is finished, the motherboard's burnt out, and i was stuck with this 478pin processor. So rather than go Intel, I bought an ASUS P4V800 board, which also had an AGP slot. The computer store wanted to charge me 5,000 rupees (@ $90) for an Intel 845, but I bought the Asus for $45, and just had it delivered to him and told him to swap the boards.
  19. How's your internet connection? since you already have the serial number, could you download the photoshop installation trial package from Adobe's site, and then use your key to register it?
  20. Have you tried making an image of the cd, and running it virtually? I have this copy of NFS:MW where the 3rd and 4th cds will not install directly. They're damaged somewhat, but i created images of them, which took the drive quite a while of skipping and accessing, but finally it made it, and then it installed perfectly fine.
  21. I like PGP's Full Disk Encryption. That's about as safe as civilian encryption gets, as far as I know.
  22. Um... I rather liked it. Wasn't extremely impressed with the ending, i agree with unimatrix, i was hoping for the same, but other than that it was good. possibly more so because i had read the reviews which weren't all that hot, so the movie hit higher than my expectations, rather than the other way around. One thing though... I agree with the critics that the plot twists are overdone. I've just watched parts 1 & 2 this month to refresh my memory for the third one, but still i had trouble following it. Other than that, a great movie, and something i could even watch all three parts back to back.
  23. The partition recovery only gets me a partial recovery. It's not that the tech switched hard disks. I had two partitions on it, and he only formatted the C boot partition. the other one remained intact, with my most important stuff, thank god. but i did switch the motherboard from intel to asus, and it probably gave him a BSOD when he put the new one in. It happens to me a lot, even when i switch a hard disk from an intel 845 to an intel 945. But all you need to do is a repair install. See, I could go spread a lot of bad press about him, but the thing is, almost everyone here will do the exact same thing. I mean, no matter if your computer is running slow, you have a virus, homepage hijacker, insufficient virtual memory, can't connect to the internet, or what have you, their solution is always to reinstall windows. Because for the most part i think they don't know any better - still they should call and confirm it first with me. anyways...I'll just live and learn, but definitely will remove any hard disks from computers before i send them in next time!!!
  24. I sent a computer in for a motherboard replacement. I could have done it myself, but i figured why not save some time. The computer came back from the shop with not only the motherboard replaced, but the hard drive reformatted and windows reinstalled as well. After yelling at the guy for his stupidity, I've now settled down to try to recover the lost data. The problem with what i'm using (R-studio) is that it will recover a formatted partition, but because windows has been installed again on top it only sees that one. What are my chances of recovering the data, and what should i use?
