  1. i also join the ranks of alienware supporters. i got my hands on one for a while once, and never had second thoughts about what i would buy if only i could afford it. heat issues are not only alienware problems, hello! just about any computer that runs a powerful P4 or equivalent is going to have issues, and not counting the dedicated graphics cards which really boost the heat factor. just get a cooling pad for $30 or less, and be happy.
  2. I would agree with that. though i definitely could use 10 hard drives with a 200GB+ capacity each. that would make sense, if you're going for insane amounts of storage, and have to stack up the biggest ones available on the market to get what you want. but to layer hard disks with 9 or 20 GB capacity, --- that's something i wouldn't want to do. why go through all the trouble. unless you're just doing it for the fun of it. i don't see that there is a limit to how many you can have; we just heard from yordan @ 1000+ drives. but in a single case, i would think theoretically at least that the number of hard disks would have to be proportionate to the cooling power of the system. i have 2 80 GB SATA hard disks, and the shop guy stuck them in slots right over each other. whenever i would do serious video editing, bam, the computer would freeze up because the hard disks didn't have any air circulating between them. as soon as i switched slots, no more problem. yeah it could. if it gets too cold. i've heard of people cooling it waay down, but if the parts get too cold then they stick and don't work so well. i'm not sure what the limits are, but there's a minimum on the operating temperature range.
  3. Not like I mean to accuse anyone in particular, but IMO the flooding of New Orleans brought out another side of America; the decaying moral values that the U.S. self-righteously accuses others of. It's appaling to read or watch the news, and while a certain amount of anarchy is to be expected after a disaster, New Orleans went way past that. Widespread looting, shooting of police officers, hell, even shooting at the air ambulances and those trying to bring them aid. Martial law, curfews, and shoot-on-sight orders are what need to be in place there now. Compare the aftermath with that of the Tsunami in Asia. both caused enormous amounts of suffering and hardship, the Tsunami much more so than Katrina. But did those whose lives and homes were destroyed by the Tsunami react in the same way that the U.S. did? Not even close.
  4. well... there are certain readers that will play dvd-audio discs, but they're few and far between--not worth the $$.
  5. basically running xp i haven't had windows hang on anything being shutdown. it'll just restart or refuse to close the process, you know, "this is a critical system process and cannot be ended" message.Killing certain processes will activate the NT authority protection, which shuts your computer down in 60 seconds... if your computer has been hacked then it's good, but if you were just fiddling around and don't want to lose your other work or just go through the whole rebooting process, open the run dialog, enter "shutdown -a" without the quotation marks. and it will end the automated shutdown process.
  6. i use yahoo just because it was the first one i tried as i had a yahoo account and most of my friends use yahoo....well, before gmail came out. i'd like to try the google talk chat, as generally what comes from google is avant-garde and miles ahead of the competitors.
  7. yeah, me too. i'd also go for both if i had the cash to spend. though if i were to choose only one, i would go for a fully loaded alienware, dual hard drives, dual processors, 256MB graphics, 17 inch screen. no way in hell i could ever afford it, but it's good wishful thinking. then again, if what i did most was gaming and heavy graphics appz, then i'd go for a desktop, as you really can't beat that for performance.

  9. Use Download Acclerator Pro, which even in its free version is extremely fast snf the new 7.5 update has extra tweaks for maximizing broadband connection throughput. you can set it to use minimal, balanced or full bandwidth. it will resume, download from multiple sources, preview, etc. all in all a great download manager. even the ads aren't too bad, still light on the bandwidth. or the paid version which has even more features, plus no ads.
  10. i disagree with that statement. we're not supposed to be promoting warez here at Xisto, but all the same i don't think you can classify hackers as lowlifes that want to stop everyone else. why not classify linux programmers and users as the same... since they also want everything to be open source. lots of people can't afford to pay the high prices demanded by microsoft and other companies. let's just take windows for now. if it cost under $50, i think there would be much less people using pirated versions. there always will be some, but but jacking up prices so high they almost force people to get it from somewhere else
  11. of course gmail is the best there is around today. and nothing comes close to it, in terms of speed, storage, being on the cutting edge. notice how all the other email providers come out with toned-down versions of what GMAIL offered first? their big selling point for me personally is their free POP3 access, and the size of the mailbox. i never have to delete mail as it grows almost faster than i fill it. extremely fast also in replying... just pops open the bottom of the page, unlike yahoo which loads a new page. it's not much difference in the world of high speed internet, but for those of us who can't get broadband, every page load request counts. and as far as scanning your email for targeted advertising, who doesn't do that? every email service provider does the same thing, and sells your info to interested advertising companies as well. security's a joke in any open email. so quit whining about it and use PGP or some other encryption software.
  12. i personally never use any 3rd party partitioning software. i prefer to get another hard disk or some dvds, back up all my stuff, and reformat from the beginning. i just use the winXP cd, and do a clean install, delete all partitions, and start from scratch. i've heard from some people that partitioning with an odd number slows down the disk, but i've tried both and haven't noticed any obvious degradation in performance. Neways, i usually forma the first partition for windows, 2nd for scratch disks, 3rd and possibly 4th for programs and other stuff. it gives you the option when you boot from the cd, to create partitions, and then it will format the first one for you with whatever you want, FAT32 or NTFS. i prefer NTFS. ....to add another benfit of doing it this way, is that if you have a FAT32 system and convert it from inside windows, using the "convert (Drive letter) /fs:ntfs" command, you don't get the security features of NTFS. it has to be done from an original format. so then when you create your partitions and are ready to install windows, it will format whichever partition it is that you're installing windows to. then for the other ones, once windows is installed, you just open explorer, right click on the other partitions, and format. again, use whichever file system you're a fan of.
  13. or else it could become a bloated piece of software that runs too slowly to do good on either end. it would be nice if they were able to actually deliver that, though... a real workhorse that give double value.
  14. i think those ideas are a bit grandiose for google. but your yahoo safety is a false security. just because yahoo doesn;t tell you that they keep your mail doesn't mean they don't do it. come on. of course they keep and read your mail as well. anything that isn't encrypted, on ANY mail server, you might as well hand it directly to the cops.
  15. it needs to be a bit more specific. how can you class desktops and laptops in the same price range? i voted alienware, but it's waaaay too general. what about the graphics card? on a system like that you wouldn;t want anything less than a 128 MB PCI-express, at minimum.
  16. do you still have warranty coverage on that laptop? if so then just take it in the the service center and no worries. if on the other hand you don't have warranty anymore, the best thing i can think of is to take it to a laptop repair store, and try out stuff there. it's a lot cheaper than buying a new battery to see if that is the problem and then maybe finding out it wasn't. then you're a whole $100 or so behind and still no solution. it could also be a power controller on the motherboard. it could be a faulty adapter. if you have it plugged in but it still won't start up, i would suggest that the problem is not with the battery but with the motherboard or adapter.
  17. well mine is relatively simple. grafitti has always been a hobby of mine, and at times, even a paying one. So though it seems to be becoming a lost art in some places, i'm keeping it alive. ....funny thing, it's not a very common nickname in forums or chats...
  18. i won't argue that i say those things about Linux sometimes, and i AM also a newbie to it. but for the motorcycle<>car scenario, i guess it depends on what car you have, how you take care of it, and what parts you can mod. maybe linux is different because it doesn't break down, or it needs less attention, but i still think that if you properly hack your windows, it can be faster and more of an attraction than an average bike. Plus which would you rather be in if there was a high-speed crash?
  19. no, you're right, windows can't do that. i tried god knows how many times to get it to work like that, called networking services, they weren't enthusiastic about the idea, but they tried and failed. So similar to yours, what i did eventually was buy a second NIC, which only costs a couple $, and set the one connected to the broadband as 203.x.x.x, (the cable modem IP) with a default gateway of 192.168.0.1, and the other computers use DHCP to assign Ip addresses. they all work fine, and i get the same bandwidth from each of them--contrary to what i was told before, that the main computer would suck up more than half and then the rest would be split between the rest of them. One thing i wasn't able to do though... get 2 computers directly conencted to the modem. one through LAN and one through USB.
  20. audioconvert is the best i've tried so far. it converts basically any format into any other format. gives you multiple options. other than that, what other programs? mediamonkey... though it's crashed on me a few times. or winamp. it has plugins to convert to other formats. get them from the winamp site.
  21. well, you might be right, as i only spent a few days with openoffice. maybe it's just being familiar with M$ and all, but everything from the viewing on screen to the commands, format, and menus seems so much easier in office. like i said, thogh, i'm not stuck on office, and will install both programs on my dual-boot system.
  22. i started out in frontpage, that was a very basic program. when i was introduced to Dreamweaver i couldn't figure it out at first, but after a few days of studying tutorials i had a working knowledge of the basics to it, and the time spent learning was well worth it. it saved me so much time compared to fp, and it's 100% more powerful, especially if you're going to be working in any langauge besides html. the downside...it's not free, but then i don't think fp is either. there are some competitive freeware options available as well, but for me, i'm sticking with dreamweaver.
  23. i believe what the green area represents is your windows pagefile. that is a section of data that won't get defragged no matter what if u just do the frag normally. so hit windows+Pause, go to Advanced>Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Change.Hit "no paging file" and set it. reboot the computer, run defragmenter, set the pagefile back to whatever you had it before at, and then reboot again. that should take care of defragmenting all the files. another option, if that doesn't work, is after you've disabled the pagefile, restart in safe mode and run defrag from there. on some messed up systems, the hard disk keeps writing data while the defrag is going on, and it keeps restarting, ad infinitum. safe mode prevents that.
  24. unfortunately there's only the paid version if u want to keep it. but if you try it and like it, then the price is pretty reasonable.
  25. NOD32 IS the best!!!!!!!!!!! it catches 10 times more than Norton, and i got it for all my 15 computers. i can support those studies that say NOD32 is the best. kaspersky is good too, but the prob is that it bogs down your system. NOD32 on the other hand is so lightweight.
