This is one of those things where you'll run into trouble whichever way you go. In other words, euthanasia is beneficial for terminally ill and such, but it has the darker side which is that doctors can take matters into their own hands, without or perhaps against the consent of the patient. I personally favor active euthanasia, shall we say "within limits", as i pointed out above. I don't see what good there is in keeping someone alive who wants to die, and they know they'll die anyway in a year or so, but in the meantime they have to keep up the treatments, prolonging their agony and making things harder on everyone else as well, plus spending insane amounts of cash that, in the end, came to nothing. If the person is unconscious or otherwise unable to make a decision one way or the other, then the responsibility should rest with the immediate members of the victim's families, in consultation with a doctor or two, to ascertain whether there actually are chances of recovery. All i can say is, i hope that by the time i'm old enough to go into a hosptial the laws will have changed and it will be an accepted and legal way to die. I don't relish the idea of sitting around in a rotting body waiting for it to naturally expire. It'd be like driving a car with a burning engine, but you just keep going because you don't have the sense to shut off the engine and thumb a ride. Possibly the reason some prefer this is fear of the unknown, but hey, sooner or later it'll come, so why not sooner? All in all, good essay, Harry. Unbiased treatment of a highly charged issue.

A Bunch Of Cool Windows Xp Tips
Grafitti replied to soleimanian's topic in Websites and Web Designing
If you've backed up your registry, and know how to restore it, you can play pretty much however you like with it, and if something goes wrong you simply restore. i've messed up my computer countless times, but simply restored the working registry when i crashed it. Though i would still reccommend a second computer, old P2 or P3, to keep for experimenting on, rather than using your workhorse. -
I agree that it's not a bad idea. especially since they're not totally phasing out dvd drives. if say they were to try to make the ONLY accepted standard blu-ray or hd-dvd i think then it would be more a problem. as it stands, if you actually have one of those dvd drives that old, you may as well get a new one, or stick with your normal Windows XP. I think this is just common sense; if you go out to buy the latest Vista and have the high-end hardware needed to run it, are you seriously going to stick in your vintage dvd drive just because it was your first ever, or some other silly sentimental reason. that's the only reason i can see someone actually wanting to do that. To use Reaver's 5.5 inch floppy as an example, if you bought a computer with XP, would you actually stick in the 5.5?

Why go with IDE? I don't suppose you already have more than 4 hard disks sitting around from your old computer, and your motherboard should support at least 2, and most likely 4, SATA ports. that gives you a total (assuming you don't use a cd or dvd) of 8 hard disks you can attach, without going out and buying speciality hardware to expand. and why would you need more than that, considering also that the larger the hard drive size, the cheaper it is per gigabyte. you can find 400 GB hard disks for $250 or less. Get a couple of those and you won't need to expand for a good while.

script kiddie with a big mouth and minature brain. but it could have easily been an older person. who says stupidity is only related to kids? look at G.W.Bush. :huh:seriously i know people who try things like that, and not only that, but they'll do the same thing 2 or 3 times before it clicks in. How low an IQ can you get?

Actually, the Office 12 suite (for once) is designed with usability in mind. It takes a little while to get your bearings, after having used the same old template for basically every previous version of Office, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes MUCH faster to use than previous versions. everything is right there at your fingertips. even simple things like the default font... it's so much better and easier on your eyes than Office versions before. Also the support for open formats and XML. then, the native Office 12 *.doc format saves at roughly half the size of Office 2003. granted, you need to open the file with the latest Office, but it's great to have the smaller size. everything's faster, more intuitive, and simply a great improvement. I would definitely rate it highly. and it runs fine on Windows XP. ---doesn't have to be Vista/Longhorn. And I agree with cyborgxxi.... Microsoft is still the best. Not really a comparison between Office 12 and OpenOffice 2.0. Unless you can't afford it.

Of course IE will never beat firefox. how can you if you're always a step behind? I've tried the beta version of IE 7, and if that's anything to go by, then i'm definitely sticking with firefox for my default browser, and IE 6 for those few sites that refuse to use anything else. IE 7 froze my system, messed up the registry, caused BSODs, and was fuill of browsing bugs, especially in the new tabbed interface. For my site i don't even bother standardizing it to IE, i just put a line there that says, "Use firefox to view this site". For me at least that works as i don't have a huge amount of traffic on my site, and i'm not interested in getting the largest number of hits possible. But Microsoft and their IE will never go down, they have too much of a customer base that will never change over, even if just because of sheer laziness. Same thing here. people can't be bothered to learn the minor differences in firefox, and so every time i set it as the default browser, out come a slew of complaints. Sort of a blind sheep attitude. they figure that if they can't actually see the virus being downloaded, then they're perfectly safe.

Way to go!!!that's the best way to post stuff, one click and ready to run. -
I can say definitely that MY Intel is unsafe to overclock. If it hardly is able to run at its rated 3 Ghz on an Intel 915 board without extreme cooling, how the hell am I supposed to overclock it?
-
hell yes! And let's not forget that for those with cash to burn there are also 8 and 16 GB models as well.

I doubt those things would catch on for laptops. who wants to hook up with water and gas to get power. better to use one of those $100 laptops that you can crank. or the new processors they're experimenting with that use a tenth of the power and give ten times as much processing power for the same low drain. Still too new but i think sooner or later that'll come around. and if someone could come up with a low-drain LCD screen, they would be RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well there is only one LEGAL answer and that's no. The broad realistic answer is yes. There are hundreds of warez sites advertising microsoft office for download. I do think though that Office, especially the new 12 suite, is better than openoffice, it's just easier to use. Now that they're open sourcing their code, and building the framework around XML, it's one big plus in their favor, and i think we'll see alot of people who were contemplating switching, staying with MS. If you have the cash, that is.

Discussion About The Best Video Codecs
Grafitti replied to electrfunch's topic in Science and Technology
And NOW it is. Dr.Divx 2 is open source, freeware, and available for download from the divx website. Only thing is it's missing a couple dll files but you can download them anywhere. It seems to be even better than the previous paid version. -
aw man i wish i could afford that! i've go a GeForce 5500 in one computer, and a GeForce 6600GT DDR3 128MB in another. So far it's handled every game i've thrown at it.
-
I use whatever i find on the market at the time that i buy. once it was the early kingston 128MB data traveller, then a TwinMOS 128MB Z4, then the new Kingston 512MB Data Traveller 2, a Sony Memorystick, and a couple cheap unbranded ones. The most unsatisfactory were the unbranded ones. i'm sure you can get some ok ones, but in general they seem to have weak casings, especially at the joint where the metal connector protrudes. that is the first thing to go, with even moderate use. My favorite so far was the sony usb disk, because it extra-compresses the data and so you fit about 190 MB on a 128 MB-rated disk, and so on.

that's one of their major drawbacks, but there's a quick and simple way around that. you don't even need to password the archive, just rename the extension to something else, and it lets it through without any problems. I still scan all mail that comes in, whether it was previously scanned by gmail or yahoo or what have you.

Major Website Mistakes Improve your site
Grafitti replied to BigmanB's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I must be one of the only people who doesn't like flash. Not everyone has it installed on their computer, and if you only have a dial-up, you're not going to want to wait around. But the main main reason why i don't like it , and don't use it on my sites, is because you can't right-click and save. that is one of the most frustrating things i encounter when browsing, and i wouldn't make others go through that as well. of course there are ways around the right click protection, but if you don't mind people saving your artwork or whatever, then it's a pretty useless thing. -
I think it starts at around $1,500 for their basic systems, and easily works its way up to the $5,000 mark. Definitely not a budget system, and i wouldn't go for one of their desktops. Laptops though are a different story.

Alienware Opens Retail Store Alienware opens retail store
Grafitti replied to Harry1984a's topic in Software
Yup, for desktops, that is. Why go out and bust the $$ on alienware when you can make your own, with even higher spex. It's a different story though for laptops. those are more difficult to build from scratch, and alienware currently dominates in laptop performance models. -
I Bet My PC Has A Cardboard Case And Does Yours ? nnanaananannanaaa
Grafitti replied to mesmer's topic in Hardware Workshop
That's pretty sweet. I'd have never thought about using a cardboard box. But if it's all about how skimpy it can get, a while back I had to change computers, and the parts arrived a couple weeks before the case. So I just wired the stuff together and had it all spread out over the carpet. Not a reccomended repeatable, as someone happened to walk by when the lights were off, and nearly cost me the motherboard. -
Cars In NFS Most Wanted what cars do you play with
Grafitti replied to smyke's topic in Computer Gaming
I'm only able to spare a couple hours a week to play it. So i'm still at #13. overall from looking at the cars, i would think the Ford GT would be the highest performing car, if the NFS ratings are good to go by. -
I find RTS games to be the most addictive overall for me. I can sit down and play for hours and hours without realizing that time is flying by. Becuase of that, I avoid playing them as much as possible. Instead I play racing games, mostly the NFS series. That would rank as the most addictive game i currently play, especially NFS Underground 2 and NFS Most Wanted. I think MW is going to be an all-time favorite and timewaster for me, since it holds the one element that makes the game alive: COPS! Yeah!
