  1. well see I don't know what the foam is there for, it was there when i bought the computer. see here it's not so easy to just buy single pieces. i could have, and i was going to go for an asus motherboard, starting with that and hand-picking components for the computer, but here the service and warranty is super bad if you use anything that's not widely used, so with all the power outages and whatnot i couldn't afford to risk it (i've already had 3 power supplies and one regulator blow out), so i'm stuck with the piece of junk, to put it nicely. So anyways i figure leaving the foam there can't hurt. i can play at the lower resolution longer, i guess because it doesn't tax the cpu as much. if i were to put it at 1024x768 and high detail i could probably get through about 5 minutes. as it is, i can sometimes go up to almost half an hour before i hear the fan getting too loud and i quickly have to exit before the computer shuts down. by the way, I called the company and they gave me the original install cd for the motherboard, -which they hadn't done in the beginning -, and i found a motherboard and hardware monitor from intel on it. So i installed it, and it keeps telling me my cpu is over temperature. it get to about 72 C. that seems pretty hot to me. and it gets like that, all i'm doing right now is running acronis backup, outlook express, and firefox. it's at a whopping 75 C. like HELLO??? and their service tech told me it's normal. he ALSO said they don't recommend using the intel monitoring utility because it's inaccurate. Inaccurate my a$$. How come then my computer shuts down?
  2. Simple way to get around it, without having to debug it, is to install a second bootable windows copy on the hard disk, and boot off of that one. at least then you're able to access your data (provided it's not EFS encrypted) and keep on working while you try to find a technician who can solve your troubles. Does it also hang in safe mode? If so, that's more sticky. if not, then uninstall drivers & hardware one at a time working backwards chronologically, until you find the one that fritzed the system.
  3. I have to say that deviantart has good variety and lots of cool stuff, plus you get to host your stuff on their site. however, if you're looking for feedback, you'll either have to make friends with those on there, or get all your friends to visit and post. at least my brother told me that he left their hosting because there was a tight-knit group who viewed each other's posts and commented, rated each other's pictures, but largely ignored the others. He switched to gfxartist.com, where people were more open to looking at other people's art. only drawback is that you need your own site to host your pictures on and link from there, unless you want to pay for hosting.
  4. I voted strongly in favor of it. that would be ideal, i think. however the other side of the coin is that you really can't tell in today's world, whether someone is actually guilty or just been framed. point in case, to give an example: Hurricane Carter. he was framed, though innocent, and then how would he have gotten cleared if he had been executed? On the other hand, actual criminals who've murdered someone, let's say premeditated, not just any murder, deserve it. Why should they be sentenced to life in prison, and the government shells out tens of thousands of dollars to pay for it. Maybe if there was like, a "second offense" death penalty, where you got a jail sentence the first time around, and if you did it again, then you got the death penalty. that would be fair, and you wouldn't be killing those who are innocent. Unless someone really hates the guy, and frames him a second time around. But there's no way it can be perfectly fair. We are mortals, after all.
  5. here I've gotten those same emails, from the CIA purportedly instead. THey are pretty good for catching the average computer dummy, because they spoof a government address as the sender. but if you look in message properties, it gives you the actual domain and email it was sent from, which has nothing to do with the CIA or FBI. I've actually had to rush over to co-workers computers and stop them from installing the worm that comes along with it, they got all freaked and thot it was actually the government. message body said something like, "your IP has been logged downloading illegal stuff from 30 sites, please fill in the attached form."total B$, but it's amazing how many people will swallow it hook, line, sinker.
  6. I would also prefer less space and no ads over the bigger, ad-based web space. Though I would like if we posting hosted members were bumped up to 250 or at least 200. But I can live with it as it now stands, and i'm sure sooner or later we'll be upgraded as well.
  7. As the topic title says, is there a way to find the date someone created a yahoo account, without crossing the hacking boundary?
  8. Ok, so i borrowed a pre-release from a friend of mine, it seems to be fully functional. it definitely takes some getting used to, so unlike all the other versions to this point. i suppose though in the long run it'll be quicker and easier to use. Attached is a screenshot of word, i tried to get it to open the embedded pic in photoshop, but couldn't find the command. maybe there is a way to do it, but so far i don't know of it. It appears to be built with Windows Vista/Longhorn in mind, making much heavier use of skins and styles. probably much more of a ram eater.
  9. As I understand, the beta 1 version of office 12 is available for download. Has anyone tried it yet, and if so, what have you noticed to be the biggest improvements over Office 11. Is it worth upgrading to?
  10. well nobody's forcing you to use their site. in my experience, unless you have an account with a good free host such as this one, or you're extremely lucky, it'll take you ages longer to find a good free site. If you have cash that's another story and a whole new ballgame. but i think this thread deals with the free side. rapidshare gives you no hassle when you want to download or upload. yeah they have adverts and keep telling you if u want the faster better service then pay, but it's a company, for crying out loud. Name one company that doesn't want you to pay money. at least they have a reasonable free alternative. megaupload is pretty good as well, or at least they used to. i haven't used them recently.
  11. I voted for desktops, but i think it's a bit skimpy to vote only for one. i have a laptop and several desktops, and i couldn't see myself without either of them. travelling, the laptop is indispensable. but at home, nothing beats a good desktop for performance. it takes me several times as long to do the work i do on the laptop as it does on the desktop. i haven't been able to afford an alienware or similar high-end laptop, so with the under $2,000 laptop, you don't get the same level of performance. I find the desktop more stable too, and easier to use with a nice big 21" monitor. Desktops are also cheaper, can get higher-end pieces for the same price, are easily upgradable, and overall will last you longer than a laptop, heavily used, will.
  12. I've used acronis trueimage. it creates perfect backups or ghost images, clones hard disks, whatever you want, and you can split the files however you want. flawless (for me) backups and restorations so far.
  13. archos is nice. but as i understood it, it was sort of a question of what was a good buy that balanced all features. The archos doesn't quite fit into that category. When they come down in price they'll be more competitive, but then again, by that time creative, iRiver, even iPod will all have much different models. I think they'll stay as a high-end tech gadget that few can afford.
  14. ah no!!!!!!!!! best mp3 player software: Winampbest Mp3 player hardware: iRiver or Creative. the best i would have to say is iRiver even though i own a creative. they are much more full-featured than the creative, plus they are simply plug-and-play. no software to install. that's the beauty of it! Apple iPods are too much of a fashion statement.
  15. simply put: Nvidia =stabilityAti = performanceof course the differences are relatively minor, and for most things you probably wouldn't notice any difference. You have to research what you're getting though, as several of the radeon series have been bellyfloppers in the performance arena. Pick a card you like, and research the reviews on it, people's experiences, etc. and you'll get a pretty good feel whether or not it's a winner.
  16. Macs are great for their limited capabilites--- high-end graphics, audio & video editing. But for the rest........they leave much to be desired. I'm hoping that the modified PC version of Tiger will become available, and from what i've heard, it seems like it runs pretty well. ---much better than native windows, in any case.
  17. I think it's an outdated graphics driver. I've had that problem with many computers, right after i first installed the OS and the graphic driver that XP selected happened to be the wrong one, or simply a generic driver. install the latest driver you can find for your card, and it should speed up.
  18. Solved the problem. stuck a regular fan in the side of my desk, and got a dual fan cooler for the hard disk. Still it's not the best because of dirty power, and i can't get higher rating than what i have now. it's almost impossible to find them here. But it works ok at least, though it's a rough job.
  19. And why not? I would be in favor of Micro$oft selling a stripped version of windows, at like $10 or $15. That would be the day!!
  20. So I switched the fan around to blow air out from the back. my case doesn't have a filter in front. should i exchange it for one that does? i don't understand why a branded case (fujitsu-siemens, in my case) would omit a pretty necessary air vent.i'm working on the Intel monitor utility, but i have noticed that the processor fan runs crazy when the heavy-duty stuff is running. So does that mean it's my processor that is the cause of the problem?
  21. to continue... my card isn't hot to the touch after a crash. it's warm, but nothing alarming. Nothing's overclocked. The graphics card has been replaced with another one of the same model since the first burnt out. That's why i don't get if it could be faulty, with two separate cards. I could get into a hardware fan solution for the temperature problem, but what if it's not the card? I'm not running on 110V, i know for sure. Since relocating to Pakistan, I've had lots of trouble with power cuts, but when it's on, it's 220V. If it were 110V, after 10 seconds my computer would be a smoke bomb. I've had it happen with other equipment. The box fan idea seems like it might work in my case. I AM able to get temperature stats from the motherboard for the CPU, but only in BIOS, which is nice, but it's not the same as getting the heat when running intensive stuff. it averages between 30 and 45 Celsius. I realised the image links didn't quite display. here we go again and
  22. I tried the motherboard monitor. it doesn't support the 915 board from intel. --at least it didn't seem to find it. it won't give me any temperatures. all it gives on the sys report is this: ----MBM SYSTEM INFO----- Info ChipInfo.ini : 18154 bytes 6/17/2004 4:37:54 PM Info shdn.ini : 388 bytes 10/12/2000 6:47:06 PM Info Voltage.ini : 38234 bytes 10/24/2005 9:18:08 PM Info Language file : 22920 bytes 6/12/2004 9:43:20 AM Up Time MBM session : 00:00:03:00 Up Time MBM total : 00:00:11:33 ------Sensor Chip------- Main Sensor Chip : SMSC EMC6D100/EMC6D101 SMB Address : $C800 Used Bus : SMB CHIP Intel ICH6 Chip Address : $2E -Sensor Chip Selections- Possible Temp Sensors[2] : SMSC EMC6D10x-1 Possible Temp Sensors[3] : SMSC EMC6D10x-2 Possible Temp Sensors[4] : SMSC EMC6D10x-3 Possible Voltage Sensors[2] : MBM Fixed Selected Voltage Sensors[1] : MBM Fixed (2) Selected Voltage Sensors[2] : MBM Fixed (2) Selected Voltage Sensors[3] : MBM Fixed (2) Selected Voltage Sensors[4] : MBM Fixed (2) Selected Voltage Sensors[5] : MBM Fixed (2) Selected Voltage Sensors[6] : MBM Fixed (2) Selected Voltage Sensors[7] : MBM Fixed (2) Possible Fan Sensors[2] : SMSC EMC6D10x-1 Possible Fan Sensors[3] : SMSC EMC6D10x-2 Possible Fan Sensors[4] : SMSC EMC6D10x-3 Possible Fan Sensors[5] : SMSC EMC6D10x-4 Possible Voltage Sub Types[0] : EMC6D100/101 Standard Selected Voltage Sub Type : EMC6D100/101 Standard (0) --Sensor Chip Readings-- Voltage Readout[1] : 1.36416 Voltage Readout[2] : 1.469 Voltage Readout[3] : 3.3712 Voltage Readout[4] : 5.122 Voltage Readout[5] : 12.0384 ---------System--------- Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP (NT 5.1) (Build 2600) Service Pack 2 User : Terrence Memory in use : 36% Total Physical Memory : 1047272 KB Available Physical Memory : 664112 KB ----------CPU----------- CPU Speed : 3001 MHz Nr of CPU's : 2 -------3rd Party-------- ShutDownNow : ----Advanced Settings--- Fan Temp : 0 Custom Temp Table : 0 Startup Delay : 0 2E 4E Enabled : 1 2E Forced : 0 4E Forced : 0 Do Not Reset : 1 SMB Scan Range : $10 - $7F here are the pics of the inside: <IMG SRC='http://usera.imagecave.com/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t; this one is a view of the whole thing the next is a close-up of the graphics card and nearby <IMG SRC='http://usera.imagecave.com/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t; so altogether it has two fans. one in the rear, and one over the cpu. there's no place to put one in the front. The rear fan sucks air from outside, and the cpu fan spits air out. Let me know if more detailed pix are needed.
  23. k, thanx, ppl. Tomorrow i'll post pics and temperature stats.
  24. So I have a brand new computer. Just bought it a couple months ago. It's an Intel 915GAVL motherboard, 3.0 Ghz HT enabled processor, 1 GB 400Mhz DDR, dual SATA 80 GB hard disks, PCI-e 128 MB Nvidia Geforce GT 6600 OC, 450w power supply, and running windows XP Professional SP2. I have two cooling fans, both side panels off, the computer is sitting on top of my desk, and it's in an air conditioned room with relatively little dust. But it still has problems. For some reason, it overheats. or that's what i've been told by the service center. already I've had the power supply totally burn out, and then the day after i got that replaced, the graphics card burned out as well. all this was covered by the warranty, but I still don't understand why it crashes. The only times it crashes is when i am working on video editing, namely adobe premiere, and when rendering it'll crash after about 5 or 10 minutes. Then when i play NFS underground2 I can't play at anything higher than 640x480 resolution for more than 15 minutes or the computer crashes. And these are not simple rebooting problems. Sometimes i can't restart it for hours, and in one case, until the next day. I can hear the fans really speed up whenever it is doing either of these tasks, and that warns me that if I keep on doing it, it'll crash. And it's not software related, which is where i'm stuck, since that's what i generally have to deal with. This is hardware based, but nobody has come up with a valid explanation as to why it does it, or how I can possibly prevent it.
  25. Yeah, but what i meant about the warranty issue, is sending it back for repair. Like, I know someone who bought a no-name chinese made mp3 player, after 2 weeks the player stopped playing mp3s, and the site for support was ONLY in Chinese, and there was no service center to send it to, other than China. But if you're going to jog, definitely a flash-based one is better. Otherwise, a hard-disk based player can give you 10 times the capacity, and at hardly any extra cost. Though they ARE more delicate in regards to dropping. The Sony sounds interesting... what's the price for one of those?
