well my connection doesn't work most of the time. the cable tv part works all the time, but not the internet. also with others i know who have worldcall, they have the same problems. Even the Standard Chartered Bank branch near me uses it and they told me that half the time it doesn't work either. see, worldcall gives me 128k, but that's not all mine. it's shared between me and 9 other users. really, like where do you come up with in idea like that. so if no one else happens to be on, i'll get the full 128k, but if they are also using the internet, my total speed drops to 10%, which is 12.8 k, and now if i divide that by 6, i've got an average of 2k, if and when the internet is actually up. with the DSL, on the other hand, it'll be fully 256k mine. I could look into multinet as well though. I never tried Khatri's. I tried the cafes there once when i needed to send a huge file urgently, and the servers were all down. So I found the 256k one in Zamzama. If it's 512k though, definitely i'll be checking into that. If and when Warid launches their ISP, that will be one thing that will help Pakistan get off the ground in the IT sector, since they'll be offering their own internet line, and not just parcelling out the PTCL internet line. No internet cafe, i simply work from home. As far as what companies tell you vs. what your speed actually is, I've been told that a general rule of thumb for what your actual speed will be is roughly 35% of what is advertised for downloads, and 15% for uploads.

Ah, that is a great list. On the freeware list, though, what about ClamAV? i've heard it's good, but not willing to try it out on my system. I use commercial, but that's only because i'm a NOD32 fan. If they were free i'd be real happy but whether or not i'll stick with them. They're more on the high side though, a bit expensive, but IMO worth it. Definitely not Norton. Anything is better than norton. Even Mcafee i'm not so fond of, as it let some things through when i used it. NOD's only downside, is that it doesn't come with a Firewall or Spyware Cleaner. But you can't always have everything you want...

Aside from the already-mentioned freeware which i won't trouble to repeat, one great freeware program isBES and here's a quote from their site, which sums it up: i've used the newest beta, and haven't run into any problems with it so far. then of course there's DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, MP3Gain, Quicktime Alternative, Real Alternative, VLC media player(a player that plays just about any format), and Speedfan. I know i didn't link them all, but they're only a google away.

I've got cable right now, a 128k connection from Worldcall, and really, for an always-on connection, i'm actually online maybe 40% of the time, and usually at speeds that are the same as your extreme dial-up, hellraiser, though as u know i split it between 6 comps, so really i have no speed. but for that i'm paying what? 25$ per month. definitely not worth it. Cybernet now has DSL here so that's who I'm going with, at 35$ per month for the 256k line, with a 2 GB monthly cap. But the fastest i've seen in Khi is 512k, even for businesses. Like i go to this internet cafe when my line is down, they boast a "highest speed in Karachi net cafe", and what do they have? 256k.
-
thanx, hellraiser. I'll definitely look up that site. Hopefully in conjunction with what i find out and whatever expertise the techs here have, i should be able to sort it out then. See, the problem here is finding someone who actually knows what they're talking about. I'm not trying to be real negative about Pakistan, don't get me wrong, and i'm sure there are a lot of capable people. just probably they're all outside the country so they can get a decent salary. Really, how it is here is if i ever do call a tech support person either over the phone or to come over to my house, whether it's for internet problems, software problems, or hardware, 9 times out of 10, what happens is the guy sits down, i explain the problem and why it's a problem, and then he tells me i'm probably right, but there's no solution (because he doesn't know of it) and so i end up online trying to figure it out somehow. They just have their preconfigured responses but can't think outside of the box. Newayz, just because some were asking for a visual of my plans, here is how it is now: and how i plan for it to be is: with of course all computers sharing files, but with the 3 in red barred from using the shared DSL connection. My brother also had some input: First of all you can't, or shouldn't, have two ICS comps on the same network. The hub doesn't divide them, it joins them all as one, as I'm sure you know. When you enable ICS on a pc, this is what happens: it assigns itself the 192.168.0.1 ip address and becomes a DHCP server for the 192.168.0.x range. You can't have two comps on the same network wit the same IP (which is what will happen if you enable ICS on two comps), and you can't have two DHCP servers on the same network, or rather you can but not the ICS type, as you can't control them. It would be simple enough to make comps choose a certain comp for internet access - just change the client's default gateway to whatever exit point you want them to use. Though if you don't have a real DHCP server, you'd have to configure the ip settings manually. Which is simply setting up static IP addresses. The default gateway is what the client will use whenever it needs to go somewhere ouside of its network, if it doesn't already have a preconfigured route for it. So if your client wants to go to 123.45.67.89, which is outside your network, it will send its request to the default gateway. So all you have to do is tell the client which default gateway you want it to use. But as I said, it won't work in your scenario because you can't have two ICS comps on the same network. Does that sound correct?

The Mentos And Diet Coke Reaction

i think you're in the wrong thread. -
AVG is great. but i have been having trouble with it trying to update over a shared network connection. it sometimes works, even tho it takes forever to get it configd, but even then sometimes it just drops off and decides there's no connection, but i'm still speeding away in explorer just doing regular browsing, so obviously the connection wasn't bad. BUT.... and here i go again, my very favorite antivirus is NOD32. I have yet to find a comparable (paid) AV that has a smaller memory footprint, and this also does a very fast complete system scan, as well as real-time protection and scanning that you hardly notice it's doing it. plus with a (so far) 100% detection rate, no computer i've installed it on has caught the virus, except for one computer of a friend who didn't update it for a year and then got caught out with the brontok worm. It's the total opposite of norton as far as system resource usage and speed. Plus, you get updates at least once a day.

Internet Access On Airplanes. a good thing or a bad thing?
Grafitti replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Why not? I sure would love to have free internet on the plane. Maybe they could forbid voice-chatting. Or if you want to get internet access on the plane you have to request it in advance, like you do if you want a special meal. and you get a login ID for the flight. that way you can't get on if you haven't requested it previously, and the airline personell can seat all those internet hungry people together in the back of the plane. If it's made clear there's no tech support, the stews should have it a bit easier. i like my idea. -
Since I haven't had any luck with my internet connection sharing problem which i posted previously, due to the terrible quality of service here, i've decided a second connection may be the answer. I won't give up the cable because i also have 2 phone lines on it, plus cable tv, but I will get a 256K DSL connection in addition to my 128K cable. The benefits of this will be that it's double, plus i'll get the full 256K connection for myself without having to share it with other users. (I explained previously about the 10to1 ratio used here in pakistan)My question is: (let's say there are 10 computers) How can I have them all networked and sharing files, but having 2 internet connections, and restricting 5 computers to the cable, and the other 5 to the DSL. I'll have a computer being the host for the cable, and another being the host for the DSL. Otherwise, am I stuck with having to buy a router for the DSL, and a second network card and consequent cabling for each computer i want to use DSL for? My worries stem from them fact that the cable is unlimited, but the DSL is capped at 2Gb per month. Since i usually download that much in 3 or 4 days, i'll easily end up paying 10 times as much as the monthly line rental costs unless i can stop the computer for accessing that particular shared connection, and the computer will automatically choose that connection because it'll be much faster, or even because the cable is so slow sometimes it doesn't register as an internet connection. To complicate matters more, i'll need to add a wireless network, over which the laptops will be able to access only the cable, when it's working.

Increase Hard Disk Speed In Windows Xp/2003
Grafitti replied to AdityaKar's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Ok, someone more knowledgeable feel free to correct me, but since i'm the first replying, we know what IRQ numbers are, right? and i don't understand why it's #14, but anyways, changing it to 4096 or larger causes it to cache more on the ram, which boosts performance somewhat because of reduced access time on the disk, but as far as i know 4096 is for machines with 512MB ram minimum. Anyone with Tweak XP please post, as there is a tweak in there that does this, and there's the full explanation along with it. Though i'm stuck on the 14, because i thought that IRQ 1 had the main priority, and so on down the line. ...i could be wrong. -
What Do You Say To A New MacBook Pro what do you think?
Grafitti replied to organicbmx's topic in Hardware Workshop
Can someone give me the general US$ street price for a G5 macbook pro, of course the one with Intel processor. I'd like to get one but here they cost upwards of $2,500. -
Well there's always ways around the default, but it's not the easiest, and you sometimes end up giving up and going back to itunes. which i don't like because it takes over the audio control of the playback on the computer, plus loads itself at startup and has its little running processes all the time. gunks up the computer some more, especially on a windows platform. As Sarah81 said, the iRiver is a great mp3 player, and if i were out shopping for a new one, that's what i would go for, after living with an iPod fanatic, and owning a Creative Zen.
-
You're definitely right about the visualizations. Even though I use WMP sometimes, I still use Winamp for my audio because it's simply the best there is. Still, if you can afford the bandwidth, and i think everyone here can, you might as well try out WMP and then, once you've tried it, you're free to say what you don't like about it.
-
I don't know, as I never had any problems with the SP2 crashing my systems. How about extracting the files and running wmp11.exe, then udmf.exe, wmdbexport.exe, wmfdist11.exe, and finally once more wmp11.exe by themselves, not simply clicking on the full installer. I can't try it myself as i don't have a machine without SP2, but it's worth a shot. But yeah, for looks, I'd give the new WMP at least a 9 -- maybe even 9.5

Ok, that brings up another question though. Because I have a 3.0 Ghz machine and 5 2.4 Ghz ones. On my 3 gig i run file-sharing, but if i totally close it down, or not open it when i log on (i don't have it set to automatically start), I still have "no" internet, or extremely slow. Even the Google search page can take 20 or 30 seconds to load. So it appears as if the connection is basically dead. then if i start up filesharing, right away i get a download speed of at least 10KB, and the same thing happens when i use download accelerator. I get a decent (for me) connection. but browsers and OE simply can't seem to find that connection properly. Then another question, yordan, if i turn off my 3 gig machine, and all the rest are exact equals in spex, and installed all the same, why will 2 of them get a connection and the other 3 simply won't?
-
I have a 128k connection that is shared between 6 computers. one computer connects directly to the internet and the others connect through this shared connection. Now I know that already, this is not a good idea, because 128k split over so many will really slow it down, but until I can get a second line there's really no way around it. And I know that the host computer will take the lion's share of the bandwidth. My question is: How can I make sure that the remaining speed is divided equally between the other computers? Right now one or two other computers will have a decent connection through, but the other 3 simply won't connect most of the time, or I have a 0.5kb connection speed, which makes web pages and outlook express mail time out constantly. I would really appreciate a solution to this.
-
Well, so do I, at least in part. But I've got WMP 11 and so far it hasn't crashed once on me. I still am and always have been a fan of Winamp over WMP for audio playback, but i do think that the latest Media Player is an improvement. As I've pointed out before, though, one shortcoming of Winamp is its uneasy relationship with video files. It plays fine on audio, but it's more dicey when it's some sort of obscure or high compression codec video format. Whereas WMP11 does quite a nice job of playing video files. Then, if you're anti-M$ or simply looking for a better alternative, I would recommend VLC player. That can play basically anything, and it's freeware. Can't get much better than that.

I Don't Want Norton To Delete My Viruses And Hacktools!
Grafitti replied to tansqrx's topic in Security issues & Exploits
Or here's a great idea! Replace Norton with another virus scan that isn't so finnicky about deleting all non-active viruses. Or use a program like PGP to encrypt those files so norton doesn't recognize them. how about PGP's virtual disk? that would keep them all in one safe place, and it's only a click away to open them all. -
Seagate To Laungh 750GB Drive !!
Grafitti replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Yeah, but if i'm working with a DV file that's say 150 GB, that's constant use on the drive. and at elast for me i've found that no matter how much i use them, the 80 GB drives run cooler than the 300 GB one. Simply a coincidence? -
A Free Graphic Design Program That Could Equal Photoshop?
Grafitti replied to evion's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
True, I concede that Photoshop is weak on its text base. Definitely Illustrator is much more powerful for that. I also use it now, used to do text-rich layouts in Photoshop and would end up with a couple hundred meg file. But with Illustrator i can do the same thing and have a 300k file. Definitely a worthwhile program. -
Seagate To Laungh 750GB Drive !!
Grafitti replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I've got a question about these insanely great hard drives. I have a 300GB as my largest single drive. Now I have a dual fan cooler screwed onto the drive to keep the temperature from going past 55 C. Now obviously it's not good and shortens the lifespan of the drive when it's so hot, but i can't figure out how else to work it when i'm doing heavy duty video editing off the drive. Wouldn't a 750 GB drive be much hotter than a 300 GB one? and if so, how would you keep it at a reasonable level? It would be a shame to spend that much cash only to have it overheat in a couple months time. -
This isn't a trick, but since we're on the Bush subject, I find it fitting nonetheless. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Come to think of it, there's another one you can get through the google thing: search for "french military victories" and see what has the top listing. I'm not sure if the site is still up, as it won't load on my computer, but at least the link is there with enough of a snippet that you catch the drift.

I've tried it, and posted my experiences with it in another thread, which sad to say i can't find, and i can't find any button that allows me to review all my posts. so anyways, to answer this particular question, yes, you can save it in a compatible format. you can set the defaults to save automatically in whatever format you prefer. this version of office supports saving to pdf and xml, in addition to other open formats like rtf. then there's the office2000-2003 "save as" version as well. what do you know. I found it: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/86584-topic/?findpost=1064322384
