  1. Thanks for the link Trekkie. I remember reading that a long time ago, but never did chmod all my files to 777. Had some problems before in the past probably because of this. :)Don't want to sound pushy or anything LOL, but did you find time to test it out yet?
  2. OK, I wanted to see what all the rave was about and looked at NOD32. I see the 30 day trial download. Is there a free edition for personal use or it's only paid version?
  3. Not so sure how reliable this is. I remember doing this before in the past and it doesn't seem to work. I still got lots of spam and virus emails. I'm sure they decoded it somehow. Spammers are getting smarter and smarter arrggg. Two methods that I hear that are effective against email leechers is: 1. To use javascript instead and piece your email address together. Just assign a variable to your main username, the @yahoo or whatever part, and then the domain (.com, .net, etc...). Then just combine all three parts into your full email. I know some popular sites that use this. Not sure how effective though since I haven't given this a spin myself. 2. To use an image displaying your email address. OK, this one I definitely gave a try. Seems like these idiots have too much time on their hands though. I had more spam and virus emails coming in than when I had my emails in plain text. So I just took down the image. The safest and most effective method to prevent getting spammed is to use a contact form. Don't just use any ordinary form like a plain HTML one. I searched for this and found that if you use a PHP contact form, there is no way they can get your email address and spam you. They can still spam you, but they will have to do it manually by filling out the required fields and then hitting the submit button. Probably more work than it's cut out for them LOL. I have looked and found a handful of PHP contact forms. Didn't like any of them except for this one. Setup should be a breeze and before you know it, users can start using that to contact you. Just for the purpose of this post, those who are interested don't need to do this manually by using that ASCII table. Just go to a site like this one and it will encode the email for you. But like I said, it doesn't seem to be effective.
  4. I was wondering about that after seeing this post also. Would the Esc key and F5 key, stop and refresh the webpage, respectively? I usually don't use buttons anyway. Love those shortcuts. LOL.
  5. Thanks. Added you to MSN. OK, I'm trying to do this but ran a few tests on SMF 1.1. I seem to be having problems installing two of the mods I want. One of them if SMF Shop, but I think this one is not SMF compatible yet. I checked and it's not listing SMF 1.1 there. But for the SMF Arcade, why does it fail on Sources/Subs.php? It happens to ./Sources/Post.php for SMF Shop. I have went in and set the setting to All are files writable. I just enter that and hit Go. Then I should save it right? All done. I applied those two mods and both failed. I didn't proceed after that. To make sure, I manually went into my cPanel and saw that every file/folder is 777 already. Is it really safe to set all my SMF files to 777? No security risk at all? I'm holding off on the upgrade for now until this can be cleared up. For the upgrade, can I just upload the upgrade zip file into the main forum folder and extract the files using cPanel? Will that overwrite the files correctly? Do I need to chmod any of those upgrade files?
  6. OK, I'm confident I know what to do from here, but just want to confirm on one thing. Is just the database backup enough? I mean, shouldn't I also backup my PHP files for the forum? I assume that the upgrade will modify the PHP files. Will try to get to this tonight and let you know the status. Thanks so much for your great support here.
  7. I'm not aware of any strict bandwidth usage limits. I have no problems logging into my other cPanel account (for my paid web host - not Xisto). It loads up quickly. Yes, I'm using Firefox. But I'm using Firefox here at work also and have no problems logging into cPanel. LOL. I should give that a try tonight. Maybe it will work better. Any other ideas why this might be happening? I'm sure it has nothing to do with the timing here.
  8. Trekkie, I know about the priority and understand. But why is it happening to me during the day, afternoon and night times? It only loads extremely slow at home. At work, I have no problems logging into cPanel during the morning or afternoon. If it helps, I'm using Verizon DSL at home. Maybe some configuration settings is wrong?
  9. Thanks Trekkie. I should have checked the SMF site earlier before asking here. :)All of the MODS I installed on my forum are the more straight forward ones, where I can just install directly from the Package Manager. No required editing of any PHP files. So should I get SMF 1.1b3 then? I don't mind re-applying the MODS again when the stable release comes out. Just want to get this puppy up and running LOL.OK, I just did this yesterday:1. Backed up my database in SMF (did everything - checked all 3 options)2. Created a backup of my home directory in cPanelI assume those 2 steps are probably best since they will have my database and then the PHP files for SMF. So if anything goes wrong, can I just import them back and get it to work like it was previously?
  10. Where did you get the download for IE7? Or is it only available for selected beta testers? If you can, give me the link (or PM it to me) to the download. I want to give this a spin also.I'm a devoted Firefox fan, but if IE7 did change dramatically for the better, I might start using it again.
  11. How is this related to Computers & Tech? You should probably post this in The Lobby or the Music forum instead. What's wrong with pop? I like both pop and punk genres.
  12. Not sure if you posted this in the correct category since it's mainly for Security Issues & Exploits. Well, what site conducted these tests? There is not "best" antivirus program. Some catch certain trojans/viruses while others will miss them. I guess they base it on ease of use and probably the user interface also. Norton? LOL. That antivirus has got to be one of the more unstable ones out there. Not to bash it or anything, but I help lots of users fix their computers and one of the problems that come up is Norton. Once I ask them to uninstall Norton, it seems like the "Gates" are open again. I ask them to install AVG and they love it. Heard good things about NOD32 and Kapersky, so they probably will be one of the top antivirus programs there. TrendMicro Antivirus can probably be one of them also. Give us the link to this survey if you still have it.
  13. Yes, that should be ok. I use Google Adsense on my other website (not Xisto) and that is considered to be a banner ad - one where you get paid when users click on it. Xisto allows banner ads. Google Adsense and other CPC services should be ok. Geocities on the other hand, might not allow any banner ads since they have their own already. You have to look into that yourself. I say go with Xisto.
  14. It's this question again LOL. As you probably know, or will find out, there will be many different views on this. Some say AMD, others say Intel.I say either one will do, but if you want to save money, go with AMD instead. They make just as good chips, or better according to madcrow, as Intel. From what I found, some will play certain games better than the other counterpart. Like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. One of the CPU runs Doom 3 better than the other, and the other CPU is better for Half-Life 2.If you ask me, it's really all in the name. Basically these two are going head to head with each other now competing to be #1.
  15. You should always keep Windows up-to-date. Most of these will patch up the security flaws discovered in Windows. Others, like upgrading to XP SP2, will provide newer security features like the much improved Windows Firewall.
  16. Trekkie, you said that we should hold off on the upgrade until it's a stable release. What problems were reported? I'm thinking about upgrading since I really like the new admin panel there. My site doesn't have a lot of MODS installed. Basically all it has now is the Integrated Chat and SMF Games. You mentioned that by upgrading all the MODS will be deleted. Does this also go for the update file (if there is one)? I assume this is because of the huge code change that's been talked about. I will probably just go with the upgrade and reinstall the MODS if anything. Just wanted to check with you to see what were the problems (if any). Are these MODS SMF 1.1 compatible? Integrated Chat SMF Games I remember testing out some of the other MODS already and see that they work on SMF 1.1. Haven't tried the above two yet though. One last question. Why do I have PHP 4.4.0 Compatibility Update as one of my packages there? I didn't install it yet but when I clicked on Browse Packages, it showed me the 2 MODS I installed and then this PHP one. It's not installed (has Apply Mod link there) but just curious how it got there. Also, why does my Integrated Chat Mod have the Apply Mod also? I installed it already and it's working without any problems. Thanks.
  17. That is a quite amazing. I was actually looking into buying myself a Pocket PC these few days. This would definitely be one gadget that will be of interest to me. My laptop is heavier than a rock LOL.The price, however, is a little to steep for me. That portable PC is so small and it will be easy to lose or get stolen.
  18. OK, do you want to put up banner ads using Xisto? I need to look at the rules for Geocities (it's been a while since I used it - don't like the service), but here at Xisto you may put up your own ads if you wish. I just looked it up.
  19. Take a look at the pinned topic here. I don't know why your's is taking so long to become unsuspended. I read somewhere that it usually takes about an hour to get you back up again. Hopefully an admin or moderator will stop by your post here and take a look to see what's wrong.
  20. You don't need to use all the features in cPanel. I don't even use most of them. The File Manager should be enough for you if you do simple tasks. If you want to edit the file, just click on the file once. Then on the right hand panel, you will see a list of options. Choose Edit File and you can then edit the file. Save it and that's it.
  21. Congrats on the approval. Do you have any experience using cPanel? It's very simple to use even for newbies. What's the problem you are having right now? You have to login to cPanel. For example, you have to go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ where username is the username you applied for in your application. Just enter the username and password you created and it should get you into cPanel. Then if you want to start the webpage, go to the File Manager and begin from there. For an overview of cPanel's features, go here.
  22. OK, I just saw in the shoutbox that cPanel is back to normal and loads extremely fast LOL. Will need to check this out when I get home. What's the problem with the SQL and webmail? I'm logging into cPanel at work (which always worked) and no problems with SQL here.
  23. I have an update on this. For some reason, I can access this at my workplace and not at home. I do recall that when I first got this web host account, I did all the cPanel work at my workplace and not at home. Work has a T1 line and my home has DSL. Does this really matter? DSL should be fast enough right? I tried going to cPanel day, evening and night. All with the same result - extremely slow loading times.
  24. I don't have anything against eBay, but I too have heard horror stories about it. You just have to be careful when you buy things online (especially when it comes to bidding). The two sites that Brian gave are pretty good. I checked out the prices on eBay and they are a little lower. My suggestion is to buy from a power seller that has great feedback (anything above 99% is good).
  25. As always, thanks for the help Trekkie.I still don't know why it failed for the SMF Shop install. I made sure it was chmod to 777. I'll try that new feature to make all the files writable.LOL. Oldiesmann (Mike right?) was very helpful. Answered all my questions about SMF, which was one reason I stayed.
