We do have a Mac section and I have moved it to the proper area...MacOS ;)Your dad is probably having issues with that computer because it's using Windows Vista. No one said it was a stable OS...heck even Windows XP is not 100% stable. But I'm sure if he goes back to using Windows XP, it will be much better in terms of performance and using other programs that he's having compatibility issues with.The war will never end between these two operating systems (Mac and Windows). I personally am a Windows user but love how the Mac works. Simplicity is one word that comes to mind. But for those who have been a long time Windows user (like me), converting will not be as simple. For your every day newbie user to computers in general, if they have to start off using a computer, I do recommend the Mac over Windows. Better yet, get one of the newer Macs where it will run Mac and Windows (using Bootcamp). The "better" or two worlds in one computer ;)Yep. The MacOS code does seem to have some *nix code in it, which is why it's very robust for the most part when compared to Windows. Unix is a very old operating system, but when you want stability and better performance, I think it's hands down one of the best operating systems to use.

This is not really any kind of hack. If the original user that installed Windows did not set a password for the Administrator account, then it will be left blank. Anyone can gain access as long as they just hit Enter for the login. The workaround mentioned by JeremyShaw can be done in normal mode. If you get the Welcome Screen with only the icons to choose from, you can actually force the old login dialog box to show up by hitting ctrl+alt+del twice. If you already see the login box, you can just type in Administrator for the username and leave the password blank. For those that don't have a password for the Administrator, it's recommended that you create one.

These modified hosts file (especially the one from MVPS - http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm) will always be growing as more of these garbage/nagging sites show up. I recommend just going to a dedicated source like MVPS and get the new hosts file whenever they release an updated one. Remember, the hosts file can sometimes block out some site that you want access to. If you encounter these cases, just go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and open up the hosts file in Notepad. You can delete the line where the site is located. Save the file and you should be able to visit the site again after a minute or so...I just close my browser and open it back up.

Did you try playing that video file using the VLC Player? If not, get it at: http://www.videolan.org/ This program can play a lot of video files that require codecs. I have never heard about the vodei codec, but hopefully VLC can handle it as well

I can be on the computer for over 10 hours each and every day (work and home). As said earlier, take frequent breaks and have good posture while using the computer. I disobey all the rules and have small tensions near my shoulders from time to time LOL. Body is probably adjusting to my habits by now.If I'm working on something that I find interesting (some coding project or others), I can sit for hours working on the project. Usually my eyes go out first before my wrist or fingers get tired from typing (which usually never happens in my case).

You will need to sign up for Google's Adsense program first at: https://www.google.com/adsense/start/?gsessionid=SwO-hIVsePGb49Z-x-XWsw Login and setup the ads with the templates they have there. Choose the one you like and how you like the ads (color, size, etc.). Then it will give you a code to copy and paste to your website. What did you mean by putting your ads on google(false)? If it's within the network, I usually just use Windows Remote Desktop to handle things quicker. If the user must see what I'm doing, then I use Symantec's PCAnywhere (not free), LogMeIn or VNC. For VNC, I actually do use another method that doesn't require the user to do much at all. They just need to open up the program and double click on a specified line to launch the listening mode that faulty.lee mentioned earlier. Guess it was only a matter of time before they pushed the image verification for this. Most online forums have this feature already and it does help decrease the amount of spammers.I'm sure there are ways for spambots to read those letters in the image verification, but if Yahoo can obscure the image even more it will probably be more effective. I have seen some where the letters are heavily distorted with tiny thread-like images in the background (like the watermark in checks).

I always have this program on the computers that I use. Download Unlocker at: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ This will allow you to unlock any process that is using the hard drive. Usually it's explorer.exe. Just right click on your external hard drive (in My Computer) and go to Unlocker. Select the process(es) that is locking up the hard drive. Then click on the Unlock button. Presto, you can now safely remove it

I have no idea what happened here, but the number of quality posts and visitors definitely seems to have diminished. I don't remember it being like this before in the past around the same time. There were actually interesting topics to participate in. Lately I come in here and have seen some topics that look familiar and don't have much to contribute to it either.If we as Moderators, delete these similar topics, then we might as well deny them hosting because they won't earn the credits and probably will be penalized if we delete their posts.I don't think we need more Moderators for this. Spamming is not high as it's usually reported quickly and a Moderator takes care of it from there. VNC is actually a great program for most remote access issues. The ports have to be forwarded properly though if you are using a router. I also recommend using Symantec's PCAnywhere, but that's a paid program. The best among them all is LogMeIn. You can get it at: https://secure.logmein.com/home They have a free version and paid version. The free version does everything that I want already, so there's no need to go pro on this one

I have seen systems that have a bunch of those resource hogging programs, but on a Dual Core system (even with 1GB of RAM running Vista), I didn't notice any lag time. I just went over to a client's house this past weekend and his had a bunch of programs running in the background. You know how they are....but I paid for it already. So I just left them on until they expire next year.I removed Norton from their other computer running Windows ME (yuck ). Put Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus on it and that thing is actually moving again in terms of launching multiple programs. AVG just keeps better and better for a free program

I assume you mean the entries in the Add/Remove Programs panel right? It's really not that difficult to do this in the registry. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Then navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall Open up each of those keys and double click on DisplayName to find out what program they belong to. Once you find the one you want to get rid of, just go back up one level/directory and delete the entire key that has that DisplayName value in it. I can't stress this enough...make sure you do a backup of your registry before doing anything in it. You can do the backup by going to File->Export and save it somewhere safe (another partition or better yet, a CD). You can also create a new system restore point. That should do the trick If you still find it unfriendly to touch the registry, then try using Delete Add or Remove Programs List Entries Software: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It's not free, but it should do the job you want.

I'm sure I have seen this error or a similar one before on Google. Like HellFire mentioned above wait it out. It's most likely an issue on Google's end

Thanks faulty.lee. Is there any way to append to an existing log file as I don't want it to be overwritten? I will have a list of IP Addresses to ping and want to keep this log with all the messages (pass or failed). If I ping more than one IP Address, what code do I need to change or add in for this to work properly? I will set it to ping maybe 4 times for each IP address just to be sure it's still up. The batch file should go through all the IP addresses and if it finds an issue, then open up the notepad file.

Is this a Windows related question or you want to create some kind of PHP script to do this? If Windows, we need to move this to the proper section in the forum. Also let us know what version of Windows you are using. For the most part, you should be able to disable the automatic boot to Safe Mode by going to Start->Run and type in msconfig and hit Enter. Then go to the Boot.ini tab and make sure the /SAFEBOOT option is unchecked.

If anyone plans to create more than one partition, now is the time to do it. Once Windows is installed, you will need a third party program like Partition Magic to split up the partition. A partition is just a separate section made available for data (be it files or the Operating System) storage. This is when you see more drives in My Computer where you can store your files to it instead of using C: all the time.FAT32 does have its advantages. Most games should work with NTFS, but older games may still require FAT32.

Definitely sounds like another WYSIWYG HTML editor. I have tried a couple of HTML Editors before (FrontPage, Dreamweaver, 1st Page, etc.). If I have to choose one of those, it's going to be Dreamweaver even though I also notice that it has "garbage" code in it sometimes. The thing I don't like about Dreamweaver is the resource usage it requires. I think 1st Page uses less (http://www.webdesignland.com/).Will try out Blue Voda and see if it is a less resource intensive program than the others. But for the most part, I'm also more fond of using a text editor instead of any WYSIWYG programs for easy tasks.

Thanks for the replies guys. IP Monitor seems to only monitor the current computers IP Address.cygwin looks like the way to go. I will take a look at it. The only thing I don't like about doing it this way is that it requires the Messenger Service to be running. Is it possible to create if statements using dos commands also? I know my way around dos but when it comes to the if statements (if it applies to dos even), I'm at a loss. Maybe something like the code you have above?if 192.168.1.200 is downthen open notepad and display that it's down....Make it read a file and ping through all the IP addresses. If more than one IP Address is not able to be pinged, addend to the same notepad file indicating so.Thanks.

I would love to get one of these Terabyte hard drives. I've been waiting for them for a while now and just won't buy them at the ridiculous prices.This will definitely free up some space in the corner of my closet where I store my other 10+ hard drives (ranging from 120GB to 500GB in size). Being a moderator in the forum here (or any busy forum) is no easy task. I have been away for a while and poking my head in here from time to time due to time constraints. Been busy with work and after work. Then when we do have time to come here, we are usually "cleaning" up the forum and post when we have any free time left.There really is no "big" advantage in being a moderator. It just requires more responsibility if you take the position. I started off as a newbie like most of the members here and never thought of becoming a moderator. I was just glad to provide good advice for other users. I would still be helping out even if I wasn't selected as a moderator. One thing you have to realize if you will even be considered to fill in a possible staff position is most likely trust. Those who are staff members here usually post helpful replies to its members and earned trust from the members and staff before they became moderators/admins.PS: Yes, OpaQue is the big guy...busy as ever since I have joined here but always trying to improve Xisto

It depends. I've seen some hosts that will allow their users to edit this setting. I would contact the webhost to see what can be done. If anything, they will/can increase it for you.
