That has to be the most annoying thing about i.e. - just use firefox and then you can have 10 tabs open in one taskbar slot. I've been using the multidesktop thing for a while now and i dont think it makes any difference, just makes life easier. i guess what it atually does is just hides taskbar slots and open windows in difference desktops. it calls itself virtual desktops to i dont think its anything complicated. people have used it in linux for years and ive never heard of anyone removing it for power reasons. just try it an see

Im not a big fan of kanye 'im the closest thing hip hop has to god' west but i do think he is definatly a step in the right direction back towards the politically aware early days of pro-active hip hop. He's a bit of a fool but much better than a fool who uses all his status and fame just to start a beef with some other rapper, to make themselves sound hard and not show the truth that they live nice and dont atually sell drugs. for ultimate power out of a p3 with good ram like that you want Gentoo but from what you say i guess its not needed. If then choose any of the easy install flavours of linux - suse, mandrake - personal choice - Ubuntu - any of the many more. linux questions is a good site for distros

I know that most people on here probably know about and are using the power toys but here is the link to those who aren't power toys I think they are great and make xp much more useable. im currently using: cleartype tuner - which makes lcd screens much nicer, tweak ui - which adds really useful customization and the multi desktop feature which is nearly as good as the linux version. i haven't noticed any system drain from them either

sorry to have not made it clear. I am trying to set up wifi on knoppix using kwifimanager the kde wifi utility. I am then going to transfer file from the old win98 onto the xp computers using samba. I can go straight from the 98 becasue it is infected and rubbish and crashes lots

I tell you whats even worse - id have a mac if it wasnt for this. In the US you guys get to buy your mini macs for $500 which is just over £250, but in england mini macs cost £359. Thats not fair.But the g5 power mac. in the us £2000 so currnecy conversion £1000 - the price i paid for my most recent p4 pc. In england the price is £1349 - not fair

Im using knoppix on a old (p3 124mb ram win98) pc that i am soon to install ubuntu on for family. I need to put this computer onto the (totally xp) network. I have managed to find the network and get fully signal but i cant figure how to join the network.The computer doesnt seem to have an ip address assigned to it. I know that the d-link hardware is linux compatible so im not sure whats wrong, i can seem to find any network setup stuff in knoppix.Any ideasAlso an extra quick question: What does gnome have in the way of a equal to KWiFimanager becasue i could install kubuntu no problem but id just prefer all our linux boxes gnome at the moment.thanks in advance

What a beautiful country. I'd love to visit. Also very nice photographs. Amazing photo of all the people coming out of the hole in the mountain with all the colourful banners. What sixe are the images as id love to see a close crop in of the people just coming out and nice high contrast on the banner colour and the black of the hole.

i personally wouldnt eat these 'grown' meats i dont think - im not sure if i could stomach them. Im not sure why but i just would prefer real meat from a real animal, same wayu i want real plants from non-gm crops.Also what is the nutritional content like, as the son of an organic farmer i can tell you that there are many trace elements and minerals that animals and plants need to grow healthy - i just wouldnt want the labs to miss these out. But i guess the rest of you wont agree with me!

If you are a normal windows user and you still want to play games i think you shouldnt bother with an emulator. I havent tried them but i dont see the point when you alread have a non-crimimal (i guess) windows on your computer. Do a dual boot - they arent hard and with a 'easy' distro like mandrake or ubuntu the set up should be a doddle.I personally have no experience of mandrake and im sure its good (well it is linux ) but i have used ubuntu and it is super easy and super nice.If you aren't too tech id say use ubuntu - its motto is 'linux for human beings' which is nice

thanks for all the advise. here is an update on what happened. strangely enough after the two cd-rw's that didnt work using nero, i used nero express instead and used cd-r's and they worked fine so there is a bit of a mystery for someone.the grub issue has gone too. the Ubuntu installer bulldosed through all problems and now has installed a great os on my p3 which is very nice and so easy. Linux in 2hours with only the install cd and knoppix for qtparted to avoid file loss - very impressedthanks

i downlaoded the ubuntu install cd the other day and tried to burn the image to cd using nero. i was using a cd-rw and i both finalise and didnt finalise and both times the cd was not booted from and when i looked at the contents xp just crashed. what happened - any ideas.also i has a broken gentoo/98 dual boot with grub on the 3rd partition. i reformated the 3rd partition forgetting about grub becasue unbuntu is going on (networkless) and now grub is messed up. can i reinstall grub off the gentoo install cd? if so what base commands do i need.thanks very much in advance

cant you just 'steal' a bit of space from one of your partitions and in stall in there. my friends gentoo is only about 3 gig and that includes all software needed for a family pc.also note about gentoo - my friends installed gentoo as a dual boot on his family pc. it a p3 family spec blah blah blah... now he has a massive increase on the speed of everything and converted all but his younger brother who still plays games. both his parents are avid users all he has to to is upkeep it.

Could someone tell me about connecting domains to sub domains.When i get the hosting it is going to host for a few websites that i am producting for income. So i want them to be all with their own domains and some of them will have subdomains. But where does it all original. At the moment i have astahsot hosting so its organicbmx.asthost.com and when i get paid hosting will i get sometihng like organicbmx.computinghost.com. Then do i make subdomains like site1.organicbmx.computinghost and then have them as the path for http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ struggleing to explain but if someone understand could they tell me if this is how it is going to work or even if it is possible. thanks

well i can report that ive been on holiday and come back and my films have all come out perfectly. I took them through as hand luggage and they went through that scanners on the side for backpacks and bags and that. They went through both English and Italiian scanners and were fine. I'll post the best soon.

no its fine - i have a non-internet friend running a perfect gentoo (which im posting from now) and he is going to help. I have attually also installed gentoo 2004.3 but it was networkless and i coulndt be bothered so that is going to have to be re-installed 2005.

i was talking about this kind of stuff the other day with my dad and he pointed out something very intersting - 20 years ago everyone lived in the cold and thought that the world was going to end with nuclear war between usa and russia, that obviously didnt happen so lets be optimistic.Im sure things will change though - power, agriculture,socialology,etcIm sure that China and India will be big if not super powers and the usa's strenght will diminish and possbily the eu will become more powerfull and hopefully the UN will be a stronger influence - Kofi Anan for world president!!!Mainly i hope for world socialism but thats not all that likey
