Moon, I'd say yes. I had never done it before and got it (mostly) right on my first try haha. There are safe route you can take, like using an app (genkernal, I believe its called) that makes a kernal for you, based on your system that it checks out. Or you can do like me and wing it on choosing your own kernal configuration options. I had gotten most everything running first try excluding my networking was a bit messed up because I rushed it but that wasn't a big issue. Also, worst case scenario? it doesn't work. Then you can just recompile the kernal and try again, no worries.Another option is I just started a thread earlier about how they released a livecd release for x86 arch's, It has a graphical guided installation for gentoo. Personally I would reccomend trying the oldschool install first. The two seem fairly similar but you might get more out of doing it the old way first. Then if that doesn't work, you always have the livecd to fire up and try out.Either way I'd reccomend it. I haven't had much time lately so I'm not totally into the Gentoo world yet, but I've enjoyed the experiences of installing it and learning a bunch of stuff on the way, so I'm glad someone else might have the courage to try since I forged on

Gentoo Linux 2006.0 Released
Jeigh1405241495 replied to Jeigh1405241495's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Haha yea honestly I can't imagine being afraid of using a CLI. I mean that was one of the first things that I saw that made me want to try linux back in the day heh. It just seemed so powerful and precise compared to the GUI... but to each their own -

Oh no I know that, I'm just doing the reinstall to see what its like comparatively to the other install method. I figure since I don't really have my other system set up too much yet, it won't be a big loss regardless. Best time for me to try it out if I'm ever going to want to.But yea I know you just need to upadte everything to keep your distro at the bleeding edge, thats one of the things that has me interested in gentoo -
Gentoo Linux 2006.0 Released
Jeigh1405241495 replied to Jeigh1405241495's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I'd be willing to bet it will make it a bit easier for us n00bs Even though I didn't really have any big problems myself with the install of the old version, that could be attributed somewhat to preperation and being comfortable in a command line environment. TO people who just jump into the install and are scared by a terminal, this would probably help them alot. Each page in the install also has a help page outlining what is going on, another helpful addition. Even more, the partitioner is somewhat graphical (CLI partitioners seem to freak out alot of people, hell partitioning in general scares alot of people) and you can even just free up space and hit "reccommended partition scheme" or something and boom, it gives you a swap partition, and boot partition, and a root (they use the 512mb swap, 100mb ext2 boot, leftover space for root ext 3 layout that the install guide uses). Of course, manual partitioning is always available too.Honestly though I'm glad I ran through the install before this came out (barely made it haha) as I probably would have wimped out and done the live cd install otherwise and I think it was a good experience doing it the other way. The Live cd, however, will make things alot faster in the future from the looks of it. -
Say Something Nice About The Person Above You!
Jeigh1405241495 replied to warbird1405241485's topic in General Discussion
Warbird is cool for trying to make us be nicer to each other -
Gentoo.org I downloaded and tried out the live cd and it seems pretty nicely done. Since I had recently just installed gentoo 2005 (my first gentoo install) I figured why not try this out, just to see how it differed from the install using the minimal install cd. It really followed a very similar pattern just with a graphical frontend. I didn't get to go all the way through the setup since my network crashed from something hopefully unrelated after booting into the livecd But it seems like the install would be a much nicer experience for people with only one accessible computer since they will assumedly be able to run most basic apps while the install is going on. Having an IM during the install process was something I had thought would be a nice touch when installing it the other way, so I'm glad to see them offer this live cd version. Of course, there is still a basic cd you can download to do the old install method, and this still isn't as quick or simple an install as other distro's but it makes it a bit more accessible to those worried about doing everything from a CLI. Another pro of this setup as far as I can tell is the option to have it compile KDE/Gnome?OO.org etc all at the get go. Basically you set eeeeverything up and then hit "install" and a month later everything is compiled and running I'm going to try again tonight or tomorrow hopefully to get a more indepth look at the new install process and I'll update this thread once I get a more full impression of the live cd and all its toys.

Microsoft Leaks Vista Information
Jeigh1405241495 replied to nightfox1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
The fact that they are releasing a version without that super-intense GUI is actually a nice surprise to me. I expected them to push that thing haaard but if they don't have it implemented for the basic Windows package then at least alot more basic users will hopefully be able to run Vista (I know it's always optional assumedly, but the barely comp literates who upgrade to Vista would likely assume it's stuck on and wouldn't know to disable it to increase performance) so I think that's a good choice.I'm still not big on that many versions but at least the devisions seem pretty damned logical. They could have done alot worse I guess... -
Yea I would if it happened again. I'm willing to bet it was a really stupid little syntax error or something. Missing a value or had an option too many or something of that nature. I say that only because the grub conf I'm using now looks exactly as I remember the one I originally tried, so whatever was different must be small but deadly.
-
That's awesome. I had seen the chainloader thing and knew that I was supposed to use it for windows booting but I wasn't really sure what it ws there for , same with noverify.Still not sure what I was originally doing wrong with setting up grub but it's working now so that's all that matters I guess heh.

Computers As A Profession Need suggestions on a computer career
Jeigh1405241495 replied to CroSpartacus's topic in Software
THis is a good time to be going into university for any computer related work really. Computer Science and other entrance rates have dropped significantly over the last few years in alot of places and they don't look to be increasing anytime soon. There was a huge burst during the .com boom and whatnot but now its mostly just people who are actually interested in the stuff. This means as the markets grow and less people go into the field, we'll assumedly have an easier time landing an acceptable job.But yea computers are here to stay and will keep becomming more prevalent in society. So they'll always need to be fixed, always need new software, and always need new people to design the hardware... any field you want to enter is doable you just need to do the one you think you will enjoy the most. -
I've always meant to get into these games. I know I played a bit of the second game but never got fully into it, not sure why. Might have to hunt down my copy or get a copy of the first and give er a shot.

twicth... if you are being serious about liking Mystic Quest I think you just lost all respect in my eyes... just so you know :| lolWhile web on the DS would be cool I think they are just starting to realize that while they innovated gameplay with the touch screen, they forgot to innovate other features like the PSP did with pimping out their web features and whatnot. I'd still say the PSP is the better system if you are more interested in non-gaming features due to all the homebrew stuff you can get (plus emulators w00)Regardless a web browser on DS would be nice, might open the door for more homebrew-esque possibilities

S. Dakota Working On Abortion Ban
Jeigh1405241495 replied to Sarah81's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I'm against abortion personally, but I think think gov's should even get involved. If people want to do it it isn't something I feel the general populace should dictate, but the inidivduals. I mean banning abortions will just raise the number of children who have horrible lives due to parents not having the abilities to raise them properly :| -
Unfreezing Your Computer

Hello neighbour... will you be my friend? *creepy stalker grin* -
Wow it actually looks decent I had tried some other free MMO's but they had crap graphics and were glitchy as hell. I'll have to give this one a shot and see if I like it. I could really go for a nice MMORPG to get into that I don't need to worry about the monthly fee of :DThanks for suggesting this one
-
Not sure... I'd say try getting up past there and see if it drops by 5 per day still, maybe there is a glitchy thing happening with near 0 credits... but I'm sure an admin will be along shortly to explain if there is a known issue or not
-
...Unless there is a known issue about SP2 causing net failure we'll assumedly need more info.Type of connection, behind a router or not, is the router working with other comps/devices, can you access the router even tho the net is down...make sure to check that your ethernet card is installed properly in case you need drivers for it that got wiped in the format.Maybe someone can help regardless but I need more info :| haha

Unfreezing Your Computer
Jeigh1405241495 replied to teartrack_sos's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Grafitti, above where you mentioned the process climbing to 200-300mb+ ram usage and whatnot, if you kill the process in the actual processes tab (not the application tab) I don't think I've ever seen it not die... although sometimes it pulls windows down with it. If a process gets to this state you are also pretty much screwed if you have unsaved data :S Hopefully the program has an autosave feature that you can use to recover most of your work heh. -
Yea, it turns out the boot loaders aren't too bad to set up manually. I DID end up using the ubuntu boot loader installer as it auto scans and sets it up for everything, but that's just because I think I missed an option that was causing the gentoo boot to fail. For the most part they aren't horrible. I was just worried that having boot loaders on multiple drives could cause conflicts, but luckily they seem to have taken care of everything so no fears w00

Do U Like Paintshop Pro?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to teartrack_sos's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Like many, I used PSP until I got ahold of photoshop. I still keep psp on my system at all times and use it if I jsut want to do a quick minute or two of editing an imagine (quick color effect or blur or add a label or whatnot) but for anything more then that I use photoshop. Paintshop is a great piece of software for the basics but once you crank it up a notch photoshop simply masacres it. There is no real comparison.I know this topic was just a "do you like PSP" but if you've used photoshop you can't NOT compare the two directly heh. -
Wow, I hadn't really thought spyware had reached the point to being persistent enough to avoid a format. I mean some viruses obviously have but those are usually in a league above adware and spyware. Just another reason to get an active spyware scanner I guess, stop that crap from getting onto your system before it has the chance.

If you really want to use one of those, I would say red. But I agree with twitchy that it looks like it'll be a bit image heavy and toning it down some would be useful.I disagree, however, that having a dark background can cause eyestrain... if you think about it as long as there is contrast between the letters/background you should be fine. Whenever I'm coding I set my color schemes to a white text on black background because there is less light being forced itno my eyes, thus less eye strain But maybe I'm odd like that...

crazy - You are supposed to quote stuff that you just copy/paste off a site Less make an admin do it for you...But yes avg is an amazing piece of freeware. I used it up until I got ahold of a copy of mcafee and never had any issues while I was running it. TOp grade piece of software.
